A Collection Of Fast Algorithms For Scalar And Vector-Valued Data On Irregular Domains: Spherical Harmonic Analysis, Divergence-Free/Curl-Free Radial Basis Functions, And Implicit Surface Reconstruction, Kathryn Primrose Drake

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses problems that arise in a diverse group of fields including cosmology, electromagnetism, and graphic design. While these topics may seem disparate, they share a commonality in their need for fast and accurate algorithms which can handle large datasets collected on irregular domains. An important issue in cosmology is the calculation of the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. CMB photons offer a direct insight into the early stages of the universe's development and give the strongest evidence for the Big Bang theory to date. The Hierarchical Equal Area isoLatitude Pixelation (HEALPix) grid is …

Computing Eigenmodes Of Elliptic Operators On Manifolds Using Radial Basis Functions, Vladimir Delengov Jan 2018

Computing Eigenmodes Of Elliptic Operators On Manifolds Using Radial Basis Functions, Vladimir Delengov

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In this work, a numerical approach based on meshless methods is proposed to obtain eigenmodes of Laplace-Beltrami operator on manifolds, and its performance is compared against existing alternative methods. Radial Basis Function (RBF)-based methods allow one to obtain interpolation and differentiation matrices easily by using scattered data points. We derive expressions for such matrices for the Laplace-Beltrami operator via so-called Reilly’s formulas and use them to solve the respective eigenvalue problem. Numerical studies of proposed methods are performed in order to demonstrate convergence on simple examples of one-dimensional curves and two-dimensional surfaces.

A Coupled Localized Rbf Meshless/Drbem Formulation For Accurate Modeling Of Incompressible Fluid Flows, Leonardo Bueno, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab Apr 2017

A Coupled Localized Rbf Meshless/Drbem Formulation For Accurate Modeling Of Incompressible Fluid Flows, Leonardo Bueno, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab

Publications

Velocity-pressure coupling schemes for the solution of incompressible fluid flow problems in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) rely on the formulation of Poisson-like equations through projection methods. The solution of these Poisson-like equations represent the pressure correction and the velocity correction to ensure proper satisfaction of the conservation of mass equation at each step of a time-marching scheme or at each level of an iteration process. Inaccurate solutions of these Poisson-like equations result in meaningless instantaneous or intermediate approximations that do not represent the proper time-accurate behavior of the flow. The fact that these equations must be solved to convergence at …

Application Of An Rbf Blending Interpolation Method To Problems With Shocks, Michael Harris, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab Jan 2017

Application Of An Rbf Blending Interpolation Method To Problems With Shocks, Michael Harris, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab

Radial basis functions (RBF) have become an area of research in recent years, especially in the use of solving partial differential equations (PDE). Radial basis functions have an impressive capability in interpolating scattered data, even for data with discontinuities. Although, for infinitely smooth radial basis functions such as the multi-quadrics and inverse multi-quadrics, the shape parameter must be chosen properly to obtain accurate approximations while avoiding ill-conditioning of the interpolating matrices. The optimum shape parameter can vary depending on the field, such as in locations of sharp gradients or shocks. Typically, the shape parameter is chosen to maintain a high …

Fast Method Of Particular Solutions For Solving Partial Differential Equations, Anup Raja Lamichhane Dec 2016

Fast Method Of Particular Solutions For Solving Partial Differential Equations, Anup Raja Lamichhane

Dissertations

Method of particular solutions (MPS) has been implemented in many science and engineering problems but obtaining the closed-form particular solutions, the selection of the good shape parameter for various radial basis functions (RBFs) and simulation of the large-scale problems are some of the challenges which need to overcome. In this dissertation, we have used several techniques to overcome such challenges.

The closed-form particular solutions for the Matérn and Gaussian RBFs were not known yet. With the help of the symbolic computational tools, we have derived the closed-form particular solutions of the Matérn and Gaussian RBFs for the Laplace and biharmonic …

A Local Radial Basis Function Method For The Numerical Solution Of Partial Differential Equations, Maggie Elizabeth Chenoweth Jan 2012

A Local Radial Basis Function Method For The Numerical Solution Of Partial Differential Equations, Maggie Elizabeth Chenoweth

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Most traditional numerical methods for approximating the solutions of problems in science, engineering, and mathematics require the data to be arranged in a structured pattern and to be contained in a simply shaped region, such as a rectangle or circle. In many important applications, this severe restriction on structure cannot be met, and traditional numerical methods cannot be applied. In the 1970s, radial basis function (RBF) methods were developed to overcome the structure requirements of existing numerical methods. RBF methods are applicable with scattered data locations. As a result, the shape of the domain may be determined by the application …

Application Of Meshless Methods For Thermal Analysis, Darrell Pepper, Bozidar Sarler Jan 2005

Application Of Meshless Methods For Thermal Analysis, Darrell Pepper, Bozidar Sarler

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Many numerical and analytical schemes exist for solving heat transfer problems. The meshless method is a particularly attractive method that is receiving attention in the engineering and scientific modeling communities. The meshless method is simple, accurate, and requires no polygonalisation. In this study, we focus on the application of meshless methods using radial basis functions (RBFs) — which are simple to implement — for thermal problems. Radial basis functions are the natural generalization of univariate polynomial splines to a multivariate setting that work for arbitrary geometry with high dimensions. RBF functions depend only on the distance from some center point. …
