Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications

This paper develops a mathematical model to investigate breast cancer dynamics by incorporating tumor–immune interactions, ketogenic diet effects, and medical treatment. The model is formulated as a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations and analyzed within an optimal control framework. Time-dependent control variables are introduced to represent treatment strategies aimed at minimizing tumor progression while reducing therapeutic costs. The model’s well-posedness is established through positivity and boundedness analysis. The necessary conditions for optimality are derived using Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle, resulting in a coupled system of state and adjoint equations. Some recent studies and field experiments show that predators affect their prey not only by direct capture; they also induce fear in prey species, which reduces their reproduction rate. Considering this fact, we propose a mathematical model to study the fear effect of a middle predator on its prey in a three-species food web system with harvesting. The ecological feasibility of solutions to the proposed system is guaranteed in terms of positivity and boundedness. The local stability of stationary points in the proposed system is derived. Recent numerical work of Carlson-Hudson-Larios leverages a nudging-based algorithm for data assimilation to asymptotically recover viscosity in the 2D Navier-Stokes equations as partial observations on the velocity are received continuously-in-time. This "on-the-fly" algorithm is studied both analytically and numerically for the Lorenz equations in this thesis.

A C++ implementation of random walks is constructed with examples for the plane, sphere, and torus included. This package is available publicly, and can be expanded to different situations on the included surfaces as well as other surfaces. The random walks are studied by measuring how long they take to reach a pre-defined escape region on the surface. These escape regions and their interaction with the surface are what affect the behavior of the random walks the most.

Numerical simulation of acoustic emission by crack propagation in 3-point bending tests is performed to investigate how the interaction of elastic waves generates a detectable signal. It is shown that the use of a kinetic relation for the crack tip velocity combined with a simple crack growth criterion provides the formation of waveforms similar to those observed in experiments.

In this article, a numerical approach is given for studying the flow of a Newtonian fluid over an impermeable stretching sheet embedded in a porous medium with a power law surface velocity and variable thickness in the presence of thermal radiation. The flow is caused by a non-linear stretching of a sheet. Thermal conductivity of the fluid is assumed to vary linearly with temperature. A series of numerical simulations is carried on in order to understand the accuracy of dispersive wave models for microstructured solids. The computations are performed by means of the finite-volume numerical scheme, which belongs to the class of wave-propagation algorithms. The dispersion effects are analyzed in materials with different internal structures: microstructure described by micromorphic theory, regular laminates, laminates with substructures, etc., for a large range of material parameters and wavelengths.

Systematic experimental work [S. Zhuang, G. Ravichandran, D. Grady, J. Mech. Phys. Solids 51 (2003) 245–265] on laminated composites subjected to high velocity impact loading exhibits the dispersed wave field and the oscillatory behavior of waves with respect to a mean value. Such a behavior is absent in homogeneous solids. An approximate solution to the plate impact in layered heterogeneous solids has been developed in [X. Chen, N. Chandra, A.M. Rajendran, Int. J.
