Variational And Adaptive Non-Local Image Denoising Using Edge Detection And K − Means Clustering, Shiraz Mujahid May 2023

Variational And Adaptive Non-Local Image Denoising Using Edge Detection And K − Means Clustering, Shiraz Mujahid

Theses and Dissertations

With the increased presence of image-based data in modern applications, the need for robust methods of image denoising grows greater. The work presented herein considers two of the most ubiquitous approaches towards image denoising: variational and non-local methods. The effectiveness of these methods is assessed using quantitatively using peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity index measure metrics. This study employs −means clustering, an unsupervised machine learning algorithm, to isolate the most dominant cluster centroids within the incoming data and propose the introduction of a new adaptive parameter into the non-local means framework. Motivated by the fact that a majority of …

Effects Of Slip On Highly Viscous Thin-Film Flows Inside Vertical Tubes (Constant Radius, Constricted And Flexible), Mark S. Schwitzerlett Jan 2023

Effects Of Slip On Highly Viscous Thin-Film Flows Inside Vertical Tubes (Constant Radius, Constricted And Flexible), Mark S. Schwitzerlett

Theses and Dissertations

Viscous liquid film flows in a tube arise in numerous industrial and biological applications, including the transport of mucus in human airways. Previous modeling studies have typically used no-slip boundary conditions, but in some applications the effects of slip at the boundary may not be negligible. We derive a long-wave model based on lubrication theory which allows for slippage along the boundary. Linear stability analysis verifies the impact of slip-length on the speed, growth rate, and wavelength of the most unstable mode. Nonlinear simulations demonstrate the impact of slip-length on plug formation and wave dynamics. These simulations are conducted for …

A Novel Method For Sensitivity Analysis Of Time-Averaged Chaotic System Solutions, Christian A. Spencer-Coker May 2022

A Novel Method For Sensitivity Analysis Of Time-Averaged Chaotic System Solutions, Christian A. Spencer-Coker

Theses and Dissertations

The direct and adjoint methods are to linearize the time-averaged solution of bounded dynamical systems about one or more design parameters. Hence, such methods are one way to obtain the gradient necessary in locally optimizing a dynamical system’s time-averaged behavior over those design parameters. However, when analyzing nonlinear systems whose solutions exhibit chaos, standard direct and adjoint sensitivity methods yield meaningless results due to time-local instability of the system. The present work proposes a new method of solving the direct and adjoint linear systems in time, then tests that method’s ability to solve instances of the Lorenz system that exhibit …

Classification And Keyword Identification Of Covid 19 Misinformation On Social Media: A Framework For Semantic Analysis, Grace Y. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The growing surge of misinformation among COVID-19 communication can pose great hindrance to truth, magnify distrust in policy makers and/or degrade authorities’ credibility, and it can even harm public health. Classification of textual context on social media data relating to COVID-19 is an effective tool to combat misinformation on social media platforms. In this research, Twitter data was leveraged to 1) develop classification methods to detect misinformation and identify Tweet sentiment with respect to COVID-19 and 2) develop a human-in-the-loop interactive framework to enable identification of keywords associated with social context, here, being misinformation regarding COVID-19. 1) Six fusion-based classification …

Role Of Inhibition And Spiking Variability In Ortho- And Retronasal Olfactory Processing, Michelle F. Craft Jan 2022

Role Of Inhibition And Spiking Variability In Ortho- And Retronasal Olfactory Processing, Michelle F. Craft

Theses and Dissertations

Odor perception is the impetus for important animal behaviors, most pertinently for feeding, but also for mating and communication. There are two predominate modes of odor processing: odors pass through the front of nose (ortho) while inhaling and sniffing, or through the rear (retro) during exhalation and while eating and drinking. Despite the importance of olfaction for an animal’s well-being and specifically that ortho and retro naturally occur, it is unknown whether the modality (ortho versus retro) is transmitted to cortical brain regions, which could significantly instruct how odors are processed. Prior imaging studies show different …

Dynamic Parameter Estimation From Partial Observations Of The Lorenz System, Eunice Ng Jul 2021

Dynamic Parameter Estimation From Partial Observations Of The Lorenz System, Eunice Ng

Theses and Dissertations

Recent numerical work of Carlson-Hudson-Larios leverages a nudging-based algorithm for data assimilation to asymptotically recover viscosity in the 2D Navier-Stokes equations as partial observations on the velocity are received continuously-in-time. This "on-the-fly" algorithm is studied both analytically and numerically for the Lorenz equations in this thesis.

The Exact Factorization Equations For One- And Two-Level Systems, Bart Rosenzweig Jul 2021

The Exact Factorization Equations For One- And Two-Level Systems, Bart Rosenzweig

Theses and Dissertations

Exact Factorization is a framework for studying quantum many-body problems. This decomposes the wavefunctions of such systems into conditional and marginal components. We derive corresponding evolution equations for molecular systems whose conditional electronic subsystems are described by one or two Born-Oppenheimer levels and develop a program for their mathematical study.

Zero-Inflated Longitudinal Mixture Model For Stochastic Radiographic Lung Compositional Change Following Radiotherapy Of Lung Cancer, Viviana A. Rodríguez Romero Jan 2020

Zero-Inflated Longitudinal Mixture Model For Stochastic Radiographic Lung Compositional Change Following Radiotherapy Of Lung Cancer, Viviana A. Rodríguez Romero

Theses and Dissertations

Compositional data (CD) is mostly analyzed as relative data, using ratios of components, and log-ratio transformations to be able to use known multivariable statistical methods. Therefore, CD where some components equal zero represent a problem. Furthermore, when the data is measured longitudinally, observations are spatially related and appear to come from a mixture population, the analysis becomes highly complex. For this matter, a two-part model was proposed to deal with structural zeros in longitudinal CD using a mixed-effects model. Furthermore, the model has been extended to the case where the non-zero components of the vector might a two component mixture …

Modeling The Distribution Of Lightning Strike Distances Outside A Preexisting Lightning Area, Dawn L. Sanderson Mar 2019

Modeling The Distribution Of Lightning Strike Distances Outside A Preexisting Lightning Area, Dawn L. Sanderson

Theses and Dissertations

Air Force Instruction 91-203 (AFI 91-203) directs that a lightning warning be issued when lightning is occurring or imminent within a 5 nautical mile (NM) radius of a predetermined location or activity. The 45 Weather Squadron (WS), located on the central eastern coast of Florida, balances the safety of personnel and space launch vehicles with lost productivity of taking shelter from lightning. The primary objective of this study investigates if this 5 NM safety radius can be reduced while maintaining a desired level of safety. The research uses processed Lightning Detection and Ranging (LDAR) data to map the movement of …

Statistical Inference To Evaluate And Compare The Performance Of Correlated Multi-State Classification Systems, Beau A. Nunnally Aug 2018

Statistical Inference To Evaluate And Compare The Performance Of Correlated Multi-State Classification Systems, Beau A. Nunnally

Theses and Dissertations

The current emphasis on including correlation when comparing diagnostic test performance is quite important, however, there are cases in which correlation effects may be negligible with respect to inference. This proposed work examines the impact of including correlation between classification systems with continuous features by comparing the optimal performance of two diagnostic tests with multiple outcomes as well as providing inference for a sequence of tests. We define the optimal point using Bayes Cost, a metric that sums the weighted misclassifications within a diagnostic test using a cost/benefit structure. Through simulation, we quantify the impact of correlation on standard errors …

Improving Annual Fixed Wing Maintenance Cost Estimates Through Cost Estimating Relationships, Kirsten Bunecke Mar 2018

Improving Annual Fixed Wing Maintenance Cost Estimates Through Cost Estimating Relationships, Kirsten Bunecke

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force executes its mission primarily through the use of fixed-wing aircrafts. Maintaining these aircrafts represents approximately one-third of annual Operating and Support costs; which in turn, make up the majority of Life Cycle Costs. The current approach to estimating aircraft maintenance costs does not take into consideration programmatic data available in the Air Force Total Ownership Cost (AFTOC) database. The four maintenance cost subcategories researched in this thesis are Consumable Materials and Repair Parts, Depot Level Repairables (DLRs), Depot Maintenance, and Contractor Logistic Support. Each of these cost categories must first be standardized to be able to compare …

Computational Fluid Dynamics In A Terminal Alveolated Bronchiole Duct With Expanding Walls: Proof-Of-Concept In Openfoam, Jeremy Myers Jan 2017

Computational Fluid Dynamics In A Terminal Alveolated Bronchiole Duct With Expanding Walls: Proof-Of-Concept In Openfoam, Jeremy Myers

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical Biology has found recent success applying Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to model airflow in the human lung. Detailed modeling of flow patterns in the alveoli, where the oxygen-carbon dioxide gas exchange occurs, has provided data that is useful in treating illnesses and designing drug-delivery systems. Unfortunately, many CFD software packages have high licensing fees that are out of reach for independent researchers. This thesis uses three open-source software packages, Gmsh, OpenFOAM, and ParaView, to design a mesh, create a simulation, and visualize the results of an idealized terminal alveolar sac model. This model successfully demonstrates that OpenFOAM can be …

Analysis Of Transient Electromagnetic Scattering From An Overfilled Cavity Embedded In An Impedance Ground Plane, Robert S. Callihan Sep 2011

Analysis Of Transient Electromagnetic Scattering From An Overfilled Cavity Embedded In An Impedance Ground Plane, Robert S. Callihan

Theses and Dissertations

We consider the transient, or time-domain, scattering problem of a two-dimensional overfilled cavity embedded in an impedance ground plane. This problem is a significant advancement from previous work where more simplified boundary conditions were used, which can limit the number of applications. This research supports a wide range of military applications such as the study of cavity-like structures on aircraft and vehicles. More importantly, this research helps detect the biggest threat on today's battlefield: improvised explosive devices. An important step in solving the problem is introducing an artificial boundary condition on a semicircle enclosing the cavity; this couples the fields …

Screening And Sufficiency In Multiobjective Decision Problems With Large Alternative Sets, Michael D. Cote Mar 2010

Screening And Sufficiency In Multiobjective Decision Problems With Large Alternative Sets, Michael D. Cote

Theses and Dissertations

Portfolio selection problems with combinatorially-large alternative sets can be impossible to evaluate precisely on a reasonable timescale. When portfolios require complex modeling for performance assessment, prohibitive computational processing times can result. Eliminating a small number of alternatives through an intelligent screening process can greatly reduce the number of alternative combinations, thereby decreasing a problem's evaluation time and cost. A methodology was developed for the class of hierarchical portfolio selection problems in which multiple objectives are all judged on the same sub-objectives. First, a novel capability-based alternative screening process was devised to identify and remove poor alternatives, thereby reducing the number …

Determining The Orbit Locations Of Turkish Airborne Early Warning And Control Aircraft Over The Turkish Air Space, Nebi Sarikaya Mar 2009

Determining The Orbit Locations Of Turkish Airborne Early Warning And Control Aircraft Over The Turkish Air Space, Nebi Sarikaya

Theses and Dissertations

The technology improvement affects the military needs of individual countries. The new doctrine of defense for many countries emphasizes detecting threats as far away as you can from your homeland. Today, the military uses both ground RADAR and Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) Aircraft. AEW&C aircraft has become vital to detect low altitude threats that a ground RADAR cannot detect because of obstacles on the earth. Turkey has ordered four AEW&C aircraft for her air defense system because of the lack of complete coverage by ground RADAR. This research provides optimal orbit locations that can be updated according to …

Hardware Algorithm Implementation For Mission Specific Processing, Jason W. Shirley Mar 2008

Hardware Algorithm Implementation For Mission Specific Processing, Jason W. Shirley

Theses and Dissertations

There is a need to expedite the process of designing military hardware to stay ahead of the adversary. The core of this project was to build reusable, synthesizeable libraries to make this a possibility. In order to build these libraries, Matlab® commands and functions, such as Conv2, Round, Floor, Pinv, etc., had to be converted into reusable VHDL modules. These modules make up reusable libraries for the Mission Specific Process (MSP) which will support AFRL/RY. The MSP allows the VLSI design process to be completed in a mere matter of days or months using an FPGA or ASIC design, as …

Surrogate Strategies For Computationally Expensive Optimization Problems With Cpu-Time Correlated Functions, Raymond Magallanez Jr. Mar 2007

Surrogate Strategies For Computationally Expensive Optimization Problems With Cpu-Time Correlated Functions, Raymond Magallanez Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on numerically solving a class of computationally expensive optimization problems that possesses a unique characteristic: as the optimal solution is approached, the computational time required to compute an objective function value decreases. This is motivated by an application in which each objective function evaluation requires both a numerical fluid dynamics simulation and an image registration and comparison process. The goal is to find the parameters of a predetermined image by comparing the flow dynamics from the numerical simulation and the predetermined image through the image comparison process. The generalized pattern search and mesh adaptive direct search methods …

Characteristic Spatial Quadratures For Discrete Ordinates Neutral Particle Transport On Arbitrary Tetrahedral Meshes, Charles R. Brennan Jun 1996

Characteristic Spatial Quadratures For Discrete Ordinates Neutral Particle Transport On Arbitrary Tetrahedral Meshes, Charles R. Brennan

Theses and Dissertations

Characteristic spatial quadratures for discrete ordinates calculations on meshes of arbitrary tetrahedra are derived and tested, including the step (SC), linear (LC), and exponential (EC) characteristic quadratures and variants that assume constant distributions on cell faces. Tetrahedral meshes accurately model curved surfaces with few cells. A split cell approach subdivides tetrahedra along the streaming direction, reducing the transport to one dimension. Assumed forms of the cell source and entering flux distributions have sufficient parameters to match the zeroth and first spatial moments. These parameters are determined by analytically inverting a linear system (LC), or by numerical inversion using Newton's method …

Multipoint Quadratic Approximation For Numerical Optimization, Michael A. Blaylock Mar 1995

Multipoint Quadratic Approximation For Numerical Optimization, Michael A. Blaylock

Theses and Dissertations

A quadratic approximation for nonlinear functions is developed in order to realize computational savings in solving numerical optimization problems. Function and gradient information accumulated from multiple design points during the iteration history is used in estimating the Hessian matrix. The approximate Hessian matrix is the available for a second order Taylor series approximation to the functions of interest. Several truss and frame models will be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new Multipoint Quadratic Approximation (MQA) in solving structural optimization problems.

Multirate Time-Frequency Distributions, John R. O'Hair May 1994

Multirate Time-Frequency Distributions, John R. O'Hair

Theses and Dissertations

Multirate systems, which find application in the design and analysis of filter banks, are demonstrated to also be useful as a computational paradigm. It is shown that any problem which can be expressed a set of vector-vector, matrix-vector or matrix-matrix operations can be recast using multirate. This means all of numerical linear algebra can be recast using multirate as the underlying computational paradigm. As a non-trivial example, the multirate computational paradigm is applied to the problem of Generalized Discrete Time- Frequency Distributions GDTFD to create a new family of fast algorithms. The first of this new class of distributions is …

Point And Interval Estimation Of Series System Reliability Using Small Data Sets, Craig J. Willits Mar 1994

Point And Interval Estimation Of Series System Reliability Using Small Data Sets, Craig J. Willits

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation explored the relative performance of several small-sample point and interval estimators for series system reliability. Among point estimators, the maximum likelihood estimator MLE was compared to the corresponding Bayes estimator. In addition, four interval estimators were compared Easterlings modified maximum likelihood integer estimator, the Lindstrom-Madden estimator, and Bayesian probability interval estimators constructed using approximate beta and Bayes Monte Carlo empirical posterior densities. The relative performance of the point estimators was assessed by comparing their mean square errors. For the four interval estimators, the interval coverage probability and the average interval lower bound were examined. The values of these …
