Towards Simulation Of Complex Ocean Flows: Analysis And Algorithm For Computation Of Coupled Partial Differential Equations, Wenbin Dong
Dissertations and Theses
The hybrid CFD models which usually consist of 2 sub-models, develop our capability to simulate many emerging problems with multiphysics and multiscale flows, especially for the coastal ocean flows interacted with local phenomena of interest. For most cases, the sub-models are connected with direct interpolation which is easy and workable. It becomes urgently needed to investigate the inner mechanism of such model integration as this simple method does not work well if the two sub-models are different in governing equations, numerical methods, and computational grids. Also, it can not treat complex flow structures as well as the balance in mass …

(R1491) Numerical Solution Of The Time-Space Fractional Diffusion Equation With Caputo Derivative In Time By A-Polynomial Method, Saeid Abbasbandy, Jalal Hajishafieiha
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, a novel type of polynomial is defined which is equipped with an auxiliary parameter a. These polynomials are a combination of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. The approximate solution of each equation is assumed as the sum of these polynomials and then, with the help of the collocation points, the unknown coefficients of each polynomial, as well as auxiliary parameter, is obtained optimally. Now, by placing the optimal value of a in polynomials, the polynomials are obtained without auxiliary parameter, which is the restarted step of the present method. The time discretization is performed …
(R1494) Approximate Solutions Of The Telegraph Equation, Ilija Jegdić
(R1494) Approximate Solutions Of The Telegraph Equation, Ilija Jegdić
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper the initial boundary value problems for the linear telegraph equation in one and two space dimensions are considered. To find approximate solutions, a recently proposed optimization-free approach that utilizes artificial neural networks with one hidden layer is used, in which the connecting weights from the input layer to the hidden layer are chosen randomly and the weights from the hidden layer to the output layer are found by solving a system of linear equations. One of the advantages of this method, in comparison to the usual discretization methods for the two-dimensional linear telegraph equation, is that this …

Multi-Valued Solutions For The Equation Of Motion, Darcy-Jordan Model, As A Cauchy Problem: A Shocking Event, Chandler Shimp
Multi-Valued Solutions For The Equation Of Motion, Darcy-Jordan Model, As A Cauchy Problem: A Shocking Event, Chandler Shimp
Master's Theses
Shocks are physical phenomenon that occur quite often around us. In this thesis we examine the occurrence of shocks in finite amplitude acoustic waves from a numerical perspective. These waves, or jump discontinuities, yield ill-behaved solutions when solved numerically. This study takes on the challenge of finding both single- and multi-valued solutions.
The previously unsolved problem in this study is the representation of the Equation of Motion (EoM) in the form of the Darcy-Jordan model (DJM) and expressed as a dimensionless IVP Cauchy problem. Prior attempts to solve have resulted only in implicit solutions or explicit solutions with certain initial …
The Exact Factorization Equations For One- And Two-Level Systems, Bart Rosenzweig
The Exact Factorization Equations For One- And Two-Level Systems, Bart Rosenzweig
Theses and Dissertations
Exact Factorization is a framework for studying quantum many-body problems. This decomposes the wavefunctions of such systems into conditional and marginal components. We derive corresponding evolution equations for molecular systems whose conditional electronic subsystems are described by one or two Born-Oppenheimer levels and develop a program for their mathematical study.

A High Order Finite Difference Method To Solve The Steady State Navier-Stokes Equations, Nihal J. Siriwardana, Saroj P. Pradhan
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article, we develop a fourth order finite difference method to solve the system of steady state Navier-Stokes equations and apply it to the benchmark problem known as the square cavity flow problem. The numerical results of 𝑢-velocity components and 𝑣-velocity components obtained at the center of the cavity are compared with the results obtained by the method developed by Greenspan and Casulli to solve the time dependent system of Navier-Stokes equations. The method described in this article is easy to implement and it has been shown to be more efficient and stable than the method by Greenspan and …

Hybrid Algorithm For Singularly Perturbed Delay Parabolic Partial Differential Equations, Imiru T. Daba, Gemechis F. Duressa
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This study aims at constructing a numerical scheme for solving singularly perturbed parabolic delay differential equations. Taylor’s series expansion is applied to approximate the shift term. The obtained result is approximated by using the implicit Euler method in the temporal discretization on a uniform step size with the hybrid numerical scheme consisting of the midpoint upwind method in the outer layer region and the cubic spline method in the inner layer region on a piecewise uniform Shishkin mesh in the spatial discretization. The constructed scheme is an ε−uniformly convergent accuracy of order one. Some test examples are considered to testify …
An Examination Of Fontan Circulation Using Differential Equation Models And Numerical Methods, Vanessa Maybruck
An Examination Of Fontan Circulation Using Differential Equation Models And Numerical Methods, Vanessa Maybruck
Honors Student Research
Certain congenital heart defects can lead to the development of only a single pumping chamber, or ventricle, in the heart instead of the usual two ventricles. Individuals with this defect undergo a corrective, three-part surgery, the third step of which is the Fontan procedure, but as the patients age, their cardiovascular health will likely deteriorate. Using computational fluid dynamics and differential equations, Fontan circulation can be modeled to investigate why the procedure fails and how Fontan failure can be maximally prevented. Borrowing from well-established literature on RC circuits, the differential equation models simulate systemic blood flow in a piecewise, switch-like …
A Component-Wise Approach To Smooth Extension Embedding Methods, Vivian Montiforte
A Component-Wise Approach To Smooth Extension Embedding Methods, Vivian Montiforte
Dissertations
Krylov Subspace Spectral (KSS) Methods have demonstrated to be highly scalable methods for PDEs. However, a current limitation of these methods is the requirement of a rectangular or box-shaped domain. Smooth Extension Embedding Methods (SEEM) use fictitious domain methods to extend a general domain to a simple, rectangular or box-shaped domain. This dissertation describes how these methods can be combined to extend the applicability of KSS methods, while also providing a component-wise approach for solving the systems of equations produced with SEEM.
Lecture 08: Partial Eigen Decomposition Of Large Symmetric Matrices Via Thick-Restart Lanczos With Explicit External Deflation And Its Communication-Avoiding Variant, Zhaojun Bai
Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series
There are continual and compelling needs for computing many eigenpairs of very large Hermitian matrix in physical simulations and data analysis. Though the Lanczos method is effective for computing a few eigenvalues, it can be expensive for computing a large number of eigenvalues. To improve the performance of the Lanczos method, in this talk, we will present a combination of explicit external deflation (EED) with an s-step variant of thick-restart Lanczos (s-step TRLan). The s-step Lanczos method can achieve an order of s reduction in data movement while the EED enables to compute eigenpairs in batches along with a number …

Lecture 07: Nonlinear Preconditioning Methods And Applications, Xiao-Chuan Cai
Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series
We consider solving system of nonlinear algebraic equations arising from the discretization of partial differential equations. Inexact Newton is a popular technique for such problems. When the nonlinearities in the system are well-balanced, Newton's method works well, but when a small number of nonlinear functions in the system are much more nonlinear than the others, Newton may converge slowly or even stagnate. In such a situation, we introduce some nonlinear preconditioners to balance the nonlinearities in the system. The preconditioners are often constructed using a combination of some domain decomposition methods and nonlinear elimination methods. For the nonlinearly preconditioned problem, …
Lecture 10: Preconditioned Iterative Methods For Linear Systems, Edmond Chow
Lecture 10: Preconditioned Iterative Methods For Linear Systems, Edmond Chow
Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series
Iterative methods for the solution of linear systems of equations – such as stationary, semi-iterative, and Krylov subspace methods – are classical methods taught in numerical analysis courses, but adapting these methods to run efficiently at large-scale on high-performance computers is challenging and a constantly evolving topic. Preconditioners – necessary to aid the convergence of iterative methods – come in many forms, from algebraic to physics-based, are regularly being developed for linear systems from different classes of problems, and similarly are evolving with high-performance computers. This lecture will cover the background and some recent developments on iterative methods and preconditioning …

Analysis Of Boundary Observability Of Strongly Coupled One-Dimensional Wave Equations With Mixed Boundary Conditions, Wilson Dennis Horner
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
*see note below
In control theory, the time it takes to receive a signal after it is sent is referred to as the observation time. For certain types of materials, the observation time to receive a wave signal differs depending on a variety of factors, such as material density, flexibility, speed of the wave propagation, etc. Suppose we have a strongly coupled system of two wave equations describing the longitudinal vibrations on a piezoelectric beam of length L. These two wave equations have non-identical wave propagation speeds c1 and c2. First, we prove the exact observability inequality with the optimal …

In this work we consider the problem of finding the simplest arrangement of resonant deep water gravity waves in one-dimensional propagation, from three perspectives: Theoretical, numerical and experimental. Theoretically this requires using a normal-form Hamiltonian that focuses on 5-wave resonances. The simplest arrangement is based on a triad of wave vectors K1 + K2 = K3 (satisfying specific ratios) along with their negatives, corresponding to a scenario of encountering wave packets, amenable to experiments and numerical simulations. The normal-form equations for these encountering waves in resonance are shown to be non-integrable, but they admit an integrable reduction …

Inference Of Surface Velocities From Oblique Time Lapse Photos And Terrestrial Based Lidar At The Helheim Glacier, Franklyn T. Dunbar Ii
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Using time dependent observations derived from terrestrial LiDAR and oblique
time-lapse imagery, we demonstrate that a Bayesian approach to glacial motion es-
timation provides a concise way to incorporate multiple data products into a single
motion estimation procedure effectively producing surface velocity estimates with
an associated uncertainty. This approach brings both improved computational effi-
ciency, and greater scalability across observational time-frames when compared to
existing methods. To gauge efficacy, we apply these methods to a set of observa-
tions from the Helheim Glacier, a critical actor in contemporary mass loss trends
observed in the Greenland Ice Sheet. We find that …
Improving The Temporal Accuracy Of Turbulence Models And Resolving The Implementation Issues Of Fluid Flow Modeling, Kyle J. Schwiebert
Improving The Temporal Accuracy Of Turbulence Models And Resolving The Implementation Issues Of Fluid Flow Modeling, Kyle J. Schwiebert
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
A sizeable proportion of the work in this thesis focuses on a new turbulence model, dubbed ADC (the approximate deconvolution model with defect correction). The ADC is improved upon using spectral deferred correction, a means of constructing a higher order ODE solver. Since both the ADC and SDC are based on a predictor-corrector approach, SDC is incorporated with essentially no additional computational cost. We will show theoretically and using numerical tests that the new scheme is indeed higher order in time than the original, and that the benefits of defect correction, on which the ADC is based, are preserved.

Deterministic And Statistical Methods For Inverse Problems With Partial Data, Yanfang Liu
Deterministic And Statistical Methods For Inverse Problems With Partial Data, Yanfang Liu
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Inverse problems with partial data have many applications in science and engineering. They are more challenging than the complete data cases since the lack of data increases ill-posedness and nonlinearity. The use of only deterministic or statistical methods might not provide satisfactory results. We propose to combine the deterministic and statistical methods to treat such inverse problems. The thesis is organized as follows.
In Chapter 1, we briefly introduce the inverse problems and their applications. The classical deterministic methods and Bayesian inversion are discussed. The chapter is concluded with a summary of contributions.
Chapter 2 considers the reconstruction of the …

The Revised Nim For Solving The Non-Linear System Variant Boussinesq Equations And Comparison With Nim, Oday Ahmed Jasim
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
This research aims to guide researchers to use a new method, and it is the Revised New Iterative Method (RNIM) to solve partial differential equation systems and apply them to solve problems in various disciplines such as chemistry, physics, engineering and medicine. In this paper, the numerical solutions of the nonlinear Variable Boussinesq Equation System (VBE) were obtained using a new modified iterative method (RNIM); this was planned by (Bhaleker and Datterder-Gejj). A numerical solution to the Variable Boussinesq Equation System (VBE) was also found using a widely known method, a new iterative method (NIM). By comparing the numerical solutions …
Diagonalization Of 1-D Schrodinger Operators With Piecewise Constant Potentials, Sarah Wright
Diagonalization Of 1-D Schrodinger Operators With Piecewise Constant Potentials, Sarah Wright
Master's Theses
In today's world our lives are very layered. My research is meant to adapt current inefficient numerical methods to more accurately model the complex situations we encounter. This project focuses on a specific equation that is used to model sound speed in the ocean. As depth increases, the sound speed changes. This means the variable related to the sound speed is not constant. We will modify this variable so that it is piecewise constant. The specific operator in this equation also makes current time-stepping methods not practical. The method used here will apply an eigenfunction expansion technique used in previous …
Accurate Spectral Algorithms For Solving Variable-Order Fractional Percolation Equations, M. A. Abdelkawy
Accurate Spectral Algorithms For Solving Variable-Order Fractional Percolation Equations, M. A. Abdelkawy
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A high accurate spectral algorithm for one-dimensional variable-order fractional percolation equations (VO-FPEs) is considered. We propose a shifted Legendre Gauss-Lobatto collocation (SL-GLC) method in conjunction with shifted Chebyshev Gauss-Radau collocation (SC-GR-C) method to solve the proposed problem. Firstly, the solution and its space fractional derivatives are expanded as shifted Legendre polynomials series. Then, we determine the expansion coefficients by reducing the VO-FPEs and its conditions to a system of ordinary differential equations (SODEs) in time. The numerical approximation of SODEs is achieved by means of the SC-GR-C method. The under-study’s problem subjected to the Dirichlet or non-local boundary conditions is presented …

From Wave Propagation To Spin Dynamics: Mathematical And Computational Aspects, Oleksii Beznosov
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this work we concentrate on two separate topics which pose certain numerical challenges. The first topic is the spin dynamics of electrons in high-energy circular accelerators. We introduce a stochastic differential equation framework to study spin depolarization and spin equilibrium. This framework allows the mathematical study of known equations and new equations modelling the spin distribution of an electron bunch. A spin distribution is governed by a so-called Bloch equation, which is a linear Fokker-Planck type PDE, in general posed in six dimensions. We propose three approaches to approximate solutions, using analytical and modern numerical techniques. We also present …
Numerical Simulations Of Nonlinear Waves And Their Stability: Stokes Waves And Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation, Anastassiya Semenova
Numerical Simulations Of Nonlinear Waves And Their Stability: Stokes Waves And Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation, Anastassiya Semenova
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
The present work offers an investigation of dynamics and stability of nonlinear waves in Hamiltonian systems. The first part of the manuscript discusses the classical problem of water waves on the surface of an ideal fluid in 2D. We demonstrate how to construct the Stokes waves, and how to apply a continuation method to find waves in close vicinity to the limiting Stokes wave. We provide new insight into the stability of the Stokes waves by identifying previously inaccessible branches of instability in the equations of motion for the fluid. We provide numerical evidence that pairs of unstable eigenvalues of …
A Phase-Field Approach To Diffusion-Driven Fracture, Friedrich Wilhelm Alexander Dunkel
A Phase-Field Approach To Diffusion-Driven Fracture, Friedrich Wilhelm Alexander Dunkel
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In recent years applied mathematicians have used modern analysis to develop variational phase-field models of fracture based on Griffith's theory. These variational phase-field models of fracture have gained popularity due to their ability to predict the crack path and handle crack nucleation and branching.
In this work, we are interested in coupled problems where a diffusion process drives the crack propagation. We extend the variational phase-field model of fracture to account for diffusion-driving fracture and study the convergence of minimizers using gamma-convergence. We will introduce Newton's method for the constrained optimization problem and present an algorithm to solve the diffusion-driven …

Numerical Approach To Non-Darcy Mixed Convective Flow Of Non-Newtonian Fluid On A Vertical Surface With Varying Surface Temperature And Heat Source, Ajaya Prasad Baitharu, Sachidananda Sahoo, Gauranga Charan Dash
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
An analysis is performed on non-Darcy mixed convective flow of non-Newtonian fluid past a vertical surface in the presence of volumetric heat source originated by some electromechanical or other devices. Further, the vertical bounding surface is subjected to power law variation of wall temperature, but the numerical solution is obtained for isothermal case. In the present non-Darcy flow model, effects of high flow rate give rise to inertia force. The inertia force in conjunction with volumetric heat source/sink is considered in the present analysis. The Runge-Kutta method of fourth order with shooting technique has been applied to obtain the numerical …

Heat And Mass Transfer Of Mhd Casson Nanofluid Flow Through A Porous Medium Past A Stretching Sheet With Newtonian Heating And Chemical Reaction, Lipika Panigrahi, Jayaprakash Panda, Kharabela Swain, Gouranga Charan Dash
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
An analysis is made to investigate the effect of inclined magnetic field on Casson nanofluid over a stretching sheet embedded in a saturated porous matrix in presence of thermal radiation, non-uniform heat source/sink. The heat equation takes care of energy loss due to viscous dissipation and Joulian dissipation. The mass transfer and heat equation become coupled due to thermophoresis and Brownian motion, two important characteristics of nanofluid flow. The convective terms of momentum, heat and mass transfer equations render the equations non-linear. This present flow model is pressure gradient driven and it is eliminated with the help of potential/ambient flow …
Advection-Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Drug Concentration In A Lymph Node, Ting Yan
Advection-Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Drug Concentration In A Lymph Node, Ting Yan
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
It is recognized that there exist reservoirs of HIV located outside the bloodstream, and that these reservoirs hinder the efficacy of antiretroviral medication regimens in combating the virus. The prevailing theories regarding these reservoirs point to the lymphatic system. In this work, we discuss a novel computational model of viral dynamics in the lymph node, to allow numerical studies of viral “reservoirs” causing reinfection. Our model consists of a system of advection-reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs), where the diffusion coefficients vary between species (virus, drugs, lymphocytes) and include discontinuous jumps to capture differing properties of internal lymph node structures. We …
Variable Compact Multi-Point Upscaling Schemes For Anisotropic Diffusion Problems In Three-Dimensions, James Quinlan
Variable Compact Multi-Point Upscaling Schemes For Anisotropic Diffusion Problems In Three-Dimensions, James Quinlan
Dissertations
Simulation is a useful tool to mitigate risk and uncertainty in subsurface flow models that contain geometrically complex features and in which the permeability field is highly heterogeneous. However, due to the level of detail in the underlying geocellular description, an upscaling procedure is needed to generate a coarsened model that is computationally feasible to perform simulations. These procedures require additional attention when coefficients in the system exhibit full-tensor anisotropy due to heterogeneity or not aligned with the computational grid. In this thesis, we generalize a multi-point finite volume scheme in several ways and benchmark it against the industry-standard routines. …
