Data And Algorithmic Modeling Approaches To Count Data, Andraya Hack
Data And Algorithmic Modeling Approaches To Count Data, Andraya Hack
Honors College Theses
Various techniques are used to create predictions based on count data. This type of data takes the form of a non-negative integers such as the number of claims an insurance policy holder may make. These predictions can allow people to prepare for likely outcomes. Thus, it is important to know how accurate the predictions are. Traditional statistical approaches for predicting count data include Poisson regression as well as negative binomial regression. Both methods also have a zero-inflated version that can be used when the data has an overabundance of zeros. Another procedure is to use computer algorithms, also known as …
A Meshless Approach To Computational Pharmacokinetics, Anthony Matthew Khoury
A Meshless Approach To Computational Pharmacokinetics, Anthony Matthew Khoury
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The meshless method is an incredibly powerful technique for solving a variety of problems with unparalleled accuracy and efficiency. The pharmacokinetic problem of transdermal drug delivery (TDDD) is one such topic and is of significant complexity. The locally collocated meshless method (LCMM) is developed in solution to this topic. First, the meshless method is formulated to model this transport phenomenon and is then validated against an analytical solution of a pharmacokinetic problem set, to demonstrate this accuracy and efficiency. The analytical solution provides a locus by which convergence behavior are evaluated, demonstrating the super convergence of the locally collocated meshless …
Dynamic Nonlinear Gaussian Model For Inferring A Graph Structure On Time Series, Abhinuv Uppal
Dynamic Nonlinear Gaussian Model For Inferring A Graph Structure On Time Series, Abhinuv Uppal
CMC Senior Theses
In many applications of graph analytics, the optimal graph construction is not always straightforward. I propose a novel algorithm to dynamically infer a graph structure on multiple time series by first imposing a state evolution equation on the graph and deriving the necessary equations to convert it into a maximum likelihood optimization problem. The state evolution equation guarantees that edge weights contain predictive power by construction. After running experiments on simulated data, it appears the required optimization is likely non-convex and does not generally produce results significantly better than randomly tweaking parameters, so it is not feasible to use in …
Fast Multipole Methods For Wave And Charge Source Interactions In Layered Media And Deep Neural Network Algorithms For High-Dimensional Pdes, Wenzhong Zhang
Fast Multipole Methods For Wave And Charge Source Interactions In Layered Media And Deep Neural Network Algorithms For High-Dimensional Pdes, Wenzhong Zhang
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we develop fast algorithms for large scale numerical computations, including the fast multipole method (FMM) in layered media, and the forward-backward stochastic differential equation (FBSDE) based deep neural network (DNN) algorithms for high-dimensional parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs), addressing the issues of real-world challenging computational problems in various computation scenarios.
We develop the FMM in layered media, by first studying analytical and numerical properties of the Green's functions in layered media for the 2-D and 3-D Helmholtz equation, the linearized Poisson--Boltzmann equation, the Laplace's equation, and the tensor Green's functions for the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations and the …
A Fast Method For Computing Volume Potentials In The Galerkin Boundary Element Method In 3d Geometries, Sasan Mohyaddin
A Fast Method For Computing Volume Potentials In The Galerkin Boundary Element Method In 3d Geometries, Sasan Mohyaddin
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
We discuss how the Fast Multipole Method (FMM) applied to a boundary concentrated mesh can be used to evaluate volume potentials that arise in the boundary element method. If $h$ is the meshwidth near the boundary, then the algorithm can compute the potential in nearly $\Ord(h^{-2})$ operations while maintaining an $\Ord(h^p)$ convergence of the error. The effectiveness of the algorithms are demonstrated by solving boundary integral equations of the Poisson equation.
Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo
Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo
Dissertations
Due to the difficulty and expense of collecting bathymetric data, modeling is the primary tool to produce detailed maps of the ocean floor. Current modeling practices typically utilize only one interpolator; the industry standard is splines-in-tension.
In this dissertation we introduce a new nominal-informed ensemble interpolator designed to improve modeling accuracy in regions of sparse data. The method is guided by a priori domain knowledge provided by artificially intelligent classifiers. We recast such geomorphological classifications, such as ‘seamount’ or ‘ridge’, as nominal data which we utilize as foundational shapes in an expanded ordinary least squares regression-based algorithm. To our knowledge …
High-Order Flexible Multirate Integrators For Multiphysics Applications, Rujeko Chinomona
High-Order Flexible Multirate Integrators For Multiphysics Applications, Rujeko Chinomona
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
Traditionally, time integration methods within multiphysics simulations have been chosen to cater to the most restrictive dynamics, sometimes at a great computational cost. Multirate integrators accurately and efficiently solve systems of ordinary differential equations that exhibit different time scales using two or more time steps. In this thesis, we explore three classes of time integrators that can be classified as one-step multi-stage multirate methods for which the slow dynamics are evolved using a traditional one step scheme and the fast dynamics are solved through a sequence of modified initial value problems. Practically, the fast dynamics are subcycled using a small …
Lecture 08: Partial Eigen Decomposition Of Large Symmetric Matrices Via Thick-Restart Lanczos With Explicit External Deflation And Its Communication-Avoiding Variant, Zhaojun Bai
Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series
There are continual and compelling needs for computing many eigenpairs of very large Hermitian matrix in physical simulations and data analysis. Though the Lanczos method is effective for computing a few eigenvalues, it can be expensive for computing a large number of eigenvalues. To improve the performance of the Lanczos method, in this talk, we will present a combination of explicit external deflation (EED) with an s-step variant of thick-restart Lanczos (s-step TRLan). The s-step Lanczos method can achieve an order of s reduction in data movement while the EED enables to compute eigenpairs in batches along with a number …

Inference Of Surface Velocities From Oblique Time Lapse Photos And Terrestrial Based Lidar At The Helheim Glacier, Franklyn T. Dunbar Ii
Inference Of Surface Velocities From Oblique Time Lapse Photos And Terrestrial Based Lidar At The Helheim Glacier, Franklyn T. Dunbar Ii
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Using time dependent observations derived from terrestrial LiDAR and oblique
time-lapse imagery, we demonstrate that a Bayesian approach to glacial motion es-
timation provides a concise way to incorporate multiple data products into a single
motion estimation procedure effectively producing surface velocity estimates with
an associated uncertainty. This approach brings both improved computational effi-
ciency, and greater scalability across observational time-frames when compared to
existing methods. To gauge efficacy, we apply these methods to a set of observa-
tions from the Helheim Glacier, a critical actor in contemporary mass loss trends
observed in the Greenland Ice Sheet. We find that …

Concussion in sports is a prevalent medical issue. It can be difficult for medical professionals to diagnose concussions. With the fast pace nature of many sports, and the damaging effects of concussions, it is important that any concussion risks are assessed immediately. There is a growing trend of wearable technology that collects data such as steps and provides the wearer with in-depth information regarding their performance. The Smart Headband project created a wearable that can record impact data and provide the wearer with a detailed analysis on their risk of sustaining a concussion. The Smart Headband uses accelerometers and gyroscopes …
Multigrid For The Nonlinear Power Flow Equations, Enrique Pereira Batista
Multigrid For The Nonlinear Power Flow Equations, Enrique Pereira Batista
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
The continuously changing structure of power systems and the inclusion of renewable
energy sources are leading to changes in the dynamics of modern power grid,
which have brought renewed attention to the solution of the AC power flow equations.
In particular, development of fast and robust solvers for the power flow problem
continues to be actively investigated. A novel multigrid technique for coarse-graining
dynamic power grid models has been developed recently. This technique uses an
algebraic multigrid (AMG) coarsening strategy applied to the weighted
graph Laplacian that arises from the power network's topology for the construction
of coarse-grain approximations to …

Purpose – Many people between the age of 20 and 34 have not considered planning financially for the future in any significant capacity and in doing so, they limit their potential savings. The purpose of this study is to examine what financial expectations are for people in the early stages of their career and determine if improving financial literacy and revealing financial realities helps to produce more accurate or realistic expectations. Ultimately, the goal is to better prepare participants in the study for the working world and increased responsibilities outside of the college/university environment by getting them to start thinking …
Unitary And Symmetric Structure In Deep Neural Networks, Kehelwala Dewage Gayan Maduranga
Unitary And Symmetric Structure In Deep Neural Networks, Kehelwala Dewage Gayan Maduranga
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have been successfully used on a wide range of sequential data problems. A well-known difficulty in using RNNs is the vanishing or exploding gradient problem. Recently, there have been several different RNN architectures that try to mitigate this issue by maintaining an orthogonal or unitary recurrent weight matrix. One such architecture is the scaled Cayley orthogonal recurrent neural network (scoRNN), which parameterizes the orthogonal recurrent weight matrix through a scaled Cayley transform. This parametrization contains a diagonal scaling matrix consisting of positive or negative one entries that can not be optimized by gradient descent. Thus the …
Orthogonal Recurrent Neural Networks And Batch Normalization In Deep Neural Networks, Kyle Eric Helfrich
Orthogonal Recurrent Neural Networks And Batch Normalization In Deep Neural Networks, Kyle Eric Helfrich
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Despite the recent success of various machine learning techniques, there are still numerous obstacles that must be overcome. One obstacle is known as the vanishing/exploding gradient problem. This problem refers to gradients that either become zero or unbounded. This is a well known problem that commonly occurs in Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). In this work we describe how this problem can be mitigated, establish three different architectures that are designed to avoid this issue, and derive update schemes for each architecture. Another portion of this work focuses on the often used technique of batch normalization. Although found to be successful …
Elucidating The Properties And Mechanism For Cellulose Dissolution In Tetrabutylphosphonium-Based Ionic Liquids Using High Concentrations Of Water, Brad Crawford
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The structural, transport, and thermodynamic properties related to cellulose dissolution by tetrabutylphosphonium chloride (TBPCl) and tetrabutylphosphonium hydroxide (TBPH)-water mixtures have been calculated via molecular dynamics simulations. For both ionic liquid (IL)-water solutions, water veins begin to form between the TBPs interlocking arms at 80 mol % water, opening a pathway for the diffusion of the anions, cations, and water. The water veins allow for a diffusion regime shift in the concentration region from 80 to 92.5 mol % water, providing a higher probability of solvent interaction with the dissolving cellulose strand. The hydrogen bonding was compared between small and large …

Personalized Detection Of Anxiety Provoking News Events Using Semantic Network Analysis, Jacquelyn Cheun Phd, Luay Dajani, Quentin B. Thomas
SMU Data Science Review
In the age of hyper-connectivity, 24/7 news cycles, and instant news alerts via social media, mental health researchers don't have a way to automatically detect news content which is associated with triggering anxiety or depression in mental health patients. Using the Associated Press news wire, a semantic network was built with 1,056 news articles containing over 500,000 connections across multiple topics to provide a personalized algorithm which detects problematic news content for a given reader. We make use of Semantic Network Analysis to surface the relationship between news article text and anxiety in readers who struggle with mental health disorders. …

Exploring Delay Dispersal In Us Airport Network, Brandon Sripimonwan, Arun Sathanur
STAR Program Research Presentations
The modeling of delay diffusion in airport networks can potentially help develop strategies to prevent the spread of such delays and disruptions. With this goal, we used the publicly-available historical United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) flight data to model the spread of delays in the US airport network. For the major (ASPM-77) airports for January 2017, using a threshold on the volume of flights, we sparsify the network in order to better recognize patterns and cluster structure of the network. We developed a diffusion simulator and greedy optimizer to find the top influential airport nodes that propagate the most …
Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods With Non-Homogenous Boundary Conditions, Abbie Hendley
Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods With Non-Homogenous Boundary Conditions, Abbie Hendley
Master's Theses
For this thesis, Krylov Subspace Spectral (KSS) methods, developed by Dr. James Lambers, will be used to solve a one-dimensional, heat equation with non-homogenous boundary conditions. While current methods such as Finite Difference are able to carry out these computations efficiently, their accuracy and scalability can be improved. We will solve the heat equation in one-dimension with two cases to observe the behaviors of the errors using KSS methods. The first case will implement KSS methods with trigonometric initial conditions, then another case where the initial conditions are polynomial functions. We will also look at both the time-independent and time-dependent …
The Effects Of Finite Precision On The Simulation Of The Double Pendulum, Rebecca Wild
The Effects Of Finite Precision On The Simulation Of The Double Pendulum, Rebecca Wild
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
We use mathematics to study physical problems because abstracting the information allows us to better analyze what could happen given any range and combination of parameters. The problem is that for complicated systems mathematical analysis becomes extremely cumbersome. The only effective and reasonable way to study the behavior of such systems is to simulate the event on a computer. However, the fact that the set of floating-point numbers is finite and the fact that they are unevenly distributed over the real number line raises a number of concerns when trying to simulate systems with chaotic behavior. In this research we …

Reducing Memory Access Latencies Using Data Compression In Sparse, Iterative Linear Solvers, Neil Lindquist
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
Solving large, sparse systems of linear equations plays a significant role in certain scientific computations, such as approximating the solutions of partial differential equations. However, solvers for these types of problems usually spend most of their time fetching data from main memory. In an effort to improve the performance of these solvers, this work explores using data compression to reduce the amount of data that needs to be fetched from main memory. Some compression methods were found that improve the performance of the solver and problem found in the HPCG benchmark, with an increase in floating point operations per second …
Algorithms To Approximate Solutions Of Poisson's Equation In Three Dimensions, Ray Dambrose
Algorithms To Approximate Solutions Of Poisson's Equation In Three Dimensions, Ray Dambrose
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The focus of this research was to develop numerical algorithms to approximate solutions of Poisson's equation in three dimensional rectangular prism domains. Numerical analysis of partial differential equations is vital to understanding and modeling these complex problems. Poisson's equation can be approximated with a finite difference approximation. A system of equations can be formed that gives solutions at internal points of the domain. A computer program was developed to solve this system with inputs such as boundary conditions and a nonhomogenous source function. Approximate solutions are compared with exact solutions to prove their accuracy. The program is tested with an …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
We study quantum computers and their impact on computability. First, we summarize the history of computer science. Only a few articles have determined the direction of computer science and industry despite the fact that many works have been dedicated to the present success. We choose articles by A. M. Turing and D. Deutsch, because A. M. Turing proposed the basic architecture of modern computers while D. Deutsch proposed an architecture for the next generation of computers called quantum computers. Second, we study the architecture of modern computers using Turing machines. The Turing machine has the basic design of modern computers …
Randomized Algorithms For Preconditioner Selection With Applications To Kernel Regression, Conner Dipaolo
Randomized Algorithms For Preconditioner Selection With Applications To Kernel Regression, Conner Dipaolo
HMC Senior Theses
The task of choosing a preconditioner M to use when solving a linear system Ax=b with iterative methods is often tedious and most methods remain ad-hoc. This thesis presents a randomized algorithm to make this chore less painful through use of randomized algorithms for estimating traces. In particular, we show that the preconditioner stability || I - M-1A ||F, known to forecast preconditioner quality, can be computed in the time it takes to run a constant number of iterations of conjugate gradients through use of sketching methods. This is in spite of folklore which …

Calculating The Cohomology Of A Lie Algebra Using Maple And The Serre Hochschild Spectral Sequence, Jacob Kullberg
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Lie algebra cohomology is an important tool in many branches of mathematics. It is used in the Topology of homogeneous spaces, Deformation theory, and Extension theory. There exists extensive theory for calculating the cohomology of semi simple Lie algebras, but more tools are needed for calculating the cohomology of general Lie algebras. To calculate the cohomology of general Lie algebras, I used the symbolic software program called Maple. I wrote software to calculate the cohomology in several different ways. I wrote several programs to calculate the cohomology directly. This proved to be computationally expensive as the number of differential forms …

Regulons, which serve as co-regulated gene groups contributing to the transcriptional regulation of microbial genomes, have the potential to aid in understanding of underlying regulatory mechanisms. In this study, we designed a novel computational pipeline, regulon identification based on comparative genomics and transcriptomics analysis (RECTA), for regulon prediction related to the gene regulatory network under certain conditions. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this tool, we implemented RECTA on Lactococcus lactis MG1363 data to elucidate acid-response regulons. A total of 51 regulons were identified, 14 of which have computational-verified significance. Among these 14 regulons, five of them were computationally predicted to …

Wildfire Emissions In The Context Of Global Change And The Implications For Mercury Pollution, Aditya Kumar
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Wildfires are episodic disturbances that exert a significant influence on the Earth system. They emit substantial amounts of atmospheric pollutants, which can impact atmospheric chemistry/composition and the Earth’s climate at the global and regional scales. This work presents a collection of studies aimed at better estimating wildfire emissions of atmospheric pollutants, quantifying their impacts on remote ecosystems and determining the implications of 2000s-2050s global environmental change (land use/land cover, climate) for wildfire emissions following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) A1B socioeconomic scenario.
A global fire emissions model is developed to compile global wildfire emission inventories for major atmospheric …

Examining The Electrical Excitation, Calcium Signaling, And Mechanical Contraction Cycle In A Heart Cell, Kristen Deetz, Nygel Foster, Darius Leftwich, Chad Meyer, Shalin Patel, Carlos Barajas, Matthias K. Gobbert, Zana Coulibaly
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
As the leading cause of death in the United States, heart disease has become a principal concern in modern society. Cardiac arrhythmias can be caused by a dysregulation of calcium dynamics in cardiomyocytes. Calcium dysregulation, however, is not yet fully understood and is not easily predicted; this provides motivation for the subsequent research. Excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) is the process through which cardiomyocytes undergo contraction from an action potential. Calcium induced calcium release (CICR) is the mechanism through which electrical excitation is coupled with mechanical contraction through calcium signaling. The study of the interplay between electrical excitation, calcium signaling, and mechanical …
