Lateral spreading and flow failure are amongst the most destructive effects of liquefaction. Estimation of the peril of lateral spreading requires characterization of subsurface conditions, principally soil density, fine content, groundwater conditions, site topography and seismic characteristics. In this paper a GMDH-type neural network and particle swarm optimization is developed for prediction of liquefaction induced lateral displacements. Using this method, a new model was proposed that is suitable for predicting the liquefaction induced lateral displacements. The proposed model was tested before the requested calculation. The present paper describes a model of resource biomass and population with a non-linear catch rate function on resource biomass. The harvesting effort is assumed to be a dynamical variable. Tax on per unit harvested resource biomass is used as a tool to control exploitation of the resource. Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle is used to find the optimal control to maintain the resource biomass and population at an optimal level. A numerical simulation is also carried out to support the analytical results.

The main objective of this original research article is to understand the short-term dynamic behavior of the transport-category airplane during landing flare elevator control application. Increasing the pitch angle to arrest the sink rate, the elevator will have to produce negative lift to rotate the airplane’s nose upward. This has an immediate adverse effect of initially accelerating airplane downward. A mathematical model of landing flare based on the flat-Earth longitudinal dynamics of rigid airplane was developed which is realistic only on very short time-scales as pitch stiffness and damping were neglected. The concept of differential flatness has been widely used for nonlinear controller design. In this contribution, it is shown that flatness may also be a very useful property for parameter identification. An identification method based on flat inputs is introduced. The treatment of noisy measurements and the extension of the method to delay differential equations are discussed. The method is illustrated by two case studies: the well-known FitzHugh-Nagumo equations and a virus replication model with delays.

In this paper, we consider the vibrations of an inhomogeneous damped string under a distributed disturbing force which is clamped at both ends. The well-possedness of the system is studied. We prove that the amplitude of such vibrations is bounded under some restriction of the disturbing force. Finally, we establish the uniform exponential stabilization of the system when the disturbing force is insignificant. The results are established directly by means of an exponential energy decay estimate.

In this paper, we consider a discrete-time non-preemptive priority queueing model with priority jumps. Two classes, real-time (high priority) and non-real time (low priority), of traffic will be considered with providing jumps from lower priority traffic to the queue of high priority traffic. We derive expressions for the joint probability generating function of the system contents of the high and the low priority traffic in the steady state and also for some performance measures such as the mean value of the system contents and the packet delay. A dynamic matrix was used to improve the static Leslie model used in the previous study since human population growth is dynamic and complex. We will present qualitative and numerical results on a partial differential equation (PDE) system which models a certain fluid-structure dynamics. In Chapter \ref{ChWellposedness}, the wellposedness of this PDE model is established by means of constructing for it a nonstandard semigroup generator representation; this representation is essentially accomplished by an appropriate elimination of the pressure. In this paper, we consider a dynamic optimization problem involving a general switched system that evolves by switching between several subsystems of nonlinear delay-differential equations. The optimization variables in this system consist of: (1) the times at which the subsystem switches occur; and (2) a set of system parameters that influence the subsystem dynamics. This paper considers a class of optimal control problems for general nonlinear time-delay systems with free terminal time. We first show that for this class of problems, the well-known time-scaling transformation for mapping the free time horizon into a fixed time interval yields a new time-delay system in which the time-delays are variable. Then, we introduce a control parameterization scheme to approximate the control variables in the new system by piecewise-constant functions. A Mathematical Framework For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Obstacle Avoidance, Sorathan Chaturapruek

The obstacle avoidance navigation problem for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is a very challenging problem. It lies at the intersection of many fields such as probability, differential geometry, optimal control, and robotics. We build a mathematical framework to solve this problem for quadrotors using both a theoretical approach through a Hamiltonian system and a machine learning approach that learns from human sub-experts' multiple demonstrations in obstacle avoidance. Prior research on the machine learning approach uses an algorithm that does not incorporate geometry. We have developed tools to solve and test the obstacle avoidance problem through mathematics.

The complex Lorenz system is a simplified nonlinear dynamical system, which is derived from the Navier-Stokes equations that govern a closed thermal convection loop. The Lorenz system is chaotic for large Rayleigh number. In this chaotic regime, we implement a linear state feedback controller to stabilize the state trajectory at its original nontrivial equilibrium. The state variable for feedback is easily measurable. The system is proved to be globally asymptotically stable with a optimal feedback gain. The stability bound is improved over the previous result.
