The most famous functional equation f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y) known as Cauchy's equation due to its appearance in the seminal analysis text Cours d'Analyse (Cauchy 1821), was used to understand fundamental aspects of the real numbers and the importance of regularity assumptions in mathematical analysis. Since then, the equation has been abstracted and examined in many contexts. One such examination, introduced by Stanislaw Ulam and furthered by Donald Hyers, was that of stability. Hyers demonstrated that Cauchy's equation exhibited stability over Banach Spaces in the following sense: functions that approximately satisfy Cauchy's equation are approximated with the same level of error by functions …

Future assembly technologies will involve higher levels of automation in order to satisfy increased microscale or nanoscale precision requirements. Traditionally, assembly using a top-down robotic approach has been well-studied and applied to the microelectronics and MEMS industries, but less so in nanotechnology. Invasive species are a prevalent problem all over the world. Controlling and eradicating an invasive species is an even more diffcult problem. The Trojan Y Chromosome (TYC) eradication strategy is one control method. This method alters the female to male sex ratio by introducing sex reversed males called supermales. These sex reversed males can only produce male progeny. Mathematical models of this strategy have shown that a population can be driven to extinction with a continuous supply of these sex reversed males. In the field of survey methodology, optimizing contact strategies helps organizations increase response rates using their allocated budget. Markov Decision Processes (MDP) are widely used to model decision-making strategies in situations where the outcomes have a random component. In this research, we use MDPs and adaptive sampling techniques to construct a strategy that, based on target audience characteristics, suggests the best contact policy. In this thesis, we study the stability of Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) applied to controlling the Lorenz system. The Lorenz system is a nonlinear dynamical system that we attempt to control. In fact, the system is used to model convection flow such as that found in thermosyphons, electric circuits, and lasers. We are stabilizing the Lorenz system along with a few disturbances. Thus, to stabilize this chaotic system, a robust controller is required. The complex Lorenz system is a simplified nonlinear dynamical system, which is derived from the Navier-Stokes equations that govern a closed thermal convection loop. The Lorenz system is chaotic for large Rayleigh number. In this chaotic regime, we implement a linear state feedback controller to stabilize the state trajectory at its original nontrivial equilibrium. The state variable for feedback is easily measurable. The system is proved to be globally asymptotically stable with a optimal feedback gain. The stability bound is improved over the previous result.
