A Class Of Game-Theoretic And Fokker-Planck Optimal Control Frameworks In Colon And Esophageal Cancer, Mesfer Alajmi Phd

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

In this dissertation, we first present a new stochastic framework for parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification in colon cancer-induced immune responses. A stochastic process that captures the system's inherent randomness determines the dynamics of colon cancer. The stochastic framework is based on the Fokker-Planck equation, which represents the evolution of the probability density function corresponding to the stochastic process. We formulate an optimization problem that takes individual patient data with randomness present and solves it to obtain the unknown parameters corresponding to the individual tumor characteristics. Furthermore, we perform a sensitivity analysis of the optimal parameter set to identify the …

Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya Sep 2020

Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We examine two dimensional properties of vortex shedding past elliptical cylinders through numerical simulations. Specifically, we investigate the vortex formation length in the Reynolds number regime 10 to 100 for elliptical bodies of aspect ratio in the range 0.4 to 1.4. Our computations reveal that in the steady flow regime, the change in the vortex length follows a linear profile with respect to the Reynolds number, while in the unsteady regime, the time averaged vortex length decreases in an exponential manner with increasing Reynolds number. The transition in profile is used to identify the critical Reynolds number which marks the …

Teaching And Learning Of Fluid Mechanics, Ashwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Fluid mechanics occupies a privileged position in the sciences; it is taught in various science departments including physics, mathematics, environmental sciences and mechanical, chemical and civil engineering, with each highlighting a different aspect or interpretation of the foundation and applications of fluids. Doll’s fluid analogy [5] for this idea is especially relevant to this issue: “Emergence of creativity from complex flow of knowledge—example of Benard convection pattern as an analogy—dissipation or dispersal of knowledge (complex knowledge) results in emergent structures, i.e., creativity which in the context of education should be thought of as a unique way to arrange information so …

Dynamics In A Respiratory Control Model With Two Delays, Saroj P. Pradhan, Ferenc Hartung, Janos Turi Dec 2019

Dynamics In A Respiratory Control Model With Two Delays, Saroj P. Pradhan, Ferenc Hartung, Janos Turi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper we study ventilation patterns in a set of parameter dependent nonlinear delay equations with two transport delays modeling the human respiratory control system with peripheral and central control loops. We present a convergent numerical scheme suitable to perform simulations when all disturbances and system parameters are known, then we consider the numerical identifiability of various system parameters based on ventilation data. We are especially interested in the identification of the transport delays in the control loops because these parameters are not measurable directly, but they have a strong influence on system stability/instability.

Fluids In Music: The Mathematics Of Pan’S Flutes, Bogdan Nita, Sajan Ramanathan

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We discuss the mathematics behind the Pan’s flute. We analyze how the sound is created, the relationship between the notes that the pipes produce, their frequencies and the length of the pipes. We find an equation which models the curve that appears at the bottom of any Pan’s flute due to the different pipe lengths.

Masked Instability: Within-Sector Financial Risk In The Presence Of Wealth Inequality, Youngna Choi Jun 2018

Masked Instability: Within-Sector Financial Risk In The Presence Of Wealth Inequality, Youngna Choi

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We investigate masked financial instability caused by wealth inequality. When an economic sector is decomposed into two subsectors that possess a severe wealth inequality, the sector in entirety can look financially stable while the two subsectors possess extreme financially instabilities of opposite nature, one from excessive equity, the other from lack thereof. The unstable subsector can result in further financial distress and even trigger a financial crisis. The market instability indicator, an early warning system derived from dynamical systems applied to agent-based models, is used to analyze the subsectoral financial instabilities. Detailed mathematical analysis is provided to explain what financial …

Global Stability Of Ebola Virus Disease Model With Contact Tracing And Quarantine, Chinwendu E. Madubueze, Anande R. Kimbir, Terhemen Aboiyar Jun 2018

Global Stability Of Ebola Virus Disease Model With Contact Tracing And Quarantine, Chinwendu E. Madubueze, Anande R. Kimbir, Terhemen Aboiyar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This study considers a deterministic model of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) incorporating contact tracing and quarantine as interventions. The model analyze the existence and stability of Disease-Free Equilibrium (DFE) and Endemic Equilibrium (EE) states. The local stability of EE is established using centre manifold theorem. The global stability of the two equilibrium states are obtained by constructing the Lyapunov function. Numerical simulations are carried out to examine the impact of contact tracing and quarantine measures on the transmission dynamics of EVD. The result indicates that EVD could be eliminated faster when contact tracing and quarantine measures are implemented together.

On The Three Dimensional Interaction Between Flexible Fibers And Fluid Flow, Bogdan Nita, Ryan Allaire Jan 2017

On The Three Dimensional Interaction Between Flexible Fibers And Fluid Flow, Bogdan Nita, Ryan Allaire

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this paper we discuss the deformation of a flexible fiber clamped to a spherical body and immersed in a flow of fluid moving with a speed ranging between 0 and 50 cm/s by means of three dimensional numerical simulation developed in COMSOL . The effects of flow speed and initial configuration angle of the fiber relative to the flow are analyzed. A rigorous analysis of the numerical procedure is performed and our code is benchmarked against well established cases. The flow velocity and pressure are used to compute drag forces upon the fiber. Of particular interest is the behavior …

Dynamics Of An Sir Model With Nonlinear Incidence And Treatment Rate, Balram Dubey, Preeti Dubey, Uma S. Dubey Dec 2015

Dynamics Of An Sir Model With Nonlinear Incidence And Treatment Rate, Balram Dubey, Preeti Dubey, Uma S. Dubey

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, global dynamics of an SIR model are investigated in which the incidence rate is being considered as Beddington-DeAngelis type and the treatment rate as Holling type II (saturated). Analytical study of the model shows that the model has two equilibrium points (diseasefree equilibrium (DFE) and endemic equilibrium (EE)). The disease-free equilibrium (DFE) is locally asymptotically stable when reproduction number is less than one. Some conditions on the model parameters are obtained to show the existence as well as nonexistence of limit cycle. Some sufficient conditions for global stability of the endemic equilibrium using Lyapunov function are obtained. …

Mathematical Modeling And Analysis Of Leukemia: Effect Of External Engineered T Cells Infusion, Manju Agarwal, Archana S. Bhadauria

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a nonlinear model is proposed and analyzed to study the spread of Leukemia by considering the effect of genetically engineered patients T cells to attack cancer cells. The model is governed by four dependent variables namely; naive or susceptible blood cells, infected or dysfunctional blood cells, cancer cells and immune cells. The model is analyzed by using the stability theory of differential equations and numerical simulation. We have observed that the system is stable in the local and global sense if antigenicity rate or rate of stimulation of immune cells is greater than a threshold value dependent …

Growth Patterns Of Ethnic Groups In Bexar County With Dynamic Leslie Models, Judith Arriaza, Zhanbo Yang, Flor De María García-Wukovits

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The purpose of this study is to modify the Leslie model with a dynamic matrix for better population projections in Bexar County, where UIW is located and the authors reside. A dynamic matrix was used to improve the static Leslie model used in the previous study since human population growth is dynamic and complex. The matrix was constructed with functions that modeled the birth rates and survival rates. This allowed the rates to change from year to year. The population projections using the dynamic matrix were compared to the real population data and the static matrix. The researcher concluded that …
