Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Modeling, Simulation And Control Of Microrobots For The Microfactory., Zhong Yang May 2023

Modeling, Simulation And Control Of Microrobots For The Microfactory., Zhong Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Future assembly technologies will involve higher levels of automation in order to satisfy increased microscale or nanoscale precision requirements. Traditionally, assembly using a top-down robotic approach has been well-studied and applied to the microelectronics and MEMS industries, but less so in nanotechnology. With the boom of nanotechnology since the 1990s, newly designed products with new materials, coatings, and nanoparticles are gradually entering everyone’s lives, while the industry has grown into a billion-dollar volume worldwide. Traditionally, nanotechnology products are assembled using bottom-up methods, such as self-assembly, rather than top-down robotic assembly. This is due to considerations of volume handling of large …

Data And Algorithmic Modeling Approaches To Count Data, Andraya Hack May 2022

Data And Algorithmic Modeling Approaches To Count Data, Andraya Hack

Honors College Theses

Various techniques are used to create predictions based on count data. This type of data takes the form of a non-negative integers such as the number of claims an insurance policy holder may make. These predictions can allow people to prepare for likely outcomes. Thus, it is important to know how accurate the predictions are. Traditional statistical approaches for predicting count data include Poisson regression as well as negative binomial regression. Both methods also have a zero-inflated version that can be used when the data has an overabundance of zeros. Another procedure is to use computer algorithms, also known as …

Lecture 09: Hierarchically Low Rank And Kronecker Methods, Rio Yokota Apr 2021

Lecture 09: Hierarchically Low Rank And Kronecker Methods, Rio Yokota

Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series

Exploiting structures of matrices goes beyond identifying their non-zero patterns. In many cases, dense full-rank matrices have low-rank submatrices that can be exploited to construct fast approximate algorithms. In other cases, dense matrices can be decomposed into Kronecker factors that are much smaller than the original matrix. Sparsity is a consequence of the connectivity of the underlying geometry (mesh, graph, interaction list, etc.), whereas the rank-deficiency of submatrices is closely related to the distance within this underlying geometry. For high dimensional geometry encountered in data science applications, the curse of dimensionality poses a challenge for rank-structured approaches. On the other …

Evaluating Driving Performance Of A Novel Behavior Planning Model On Connected Autonomous Vehicles, Keyur Shah May 2020

Evaluating Driving Performance Of A Novel Behavior Planning Model On Connected Autonomous Vehicles, Keyur Shah

Honors Scholar Theses

Many current algorithms and approaches in autonomous driving attempt to solve the "trajectory generation" or "trajectory following” problems: given a target behavior (e.g. stay in the current lane at the speed limit or change lane), what trajectory should the vehicle follow, and what inputs should the driving agent apply to the throttle and brake to achieve this trajectory? In this work, we instead focus on the “behavior planning” problem—specifically, should an autonomous vehicle change lane or keep lane given the current state of the system?

In addition, current theory mainly focuses on single-vehicle systems, where vehicles do not communicate with …

Description Of Motor Control Using Inverse Models, Anton Sobinov Jan 2019

Description Of Motor Control Using Inverse Models, Anton Sobinov

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Humans can perform complicated movements like writing or running without giving them much thought. The scientific understanding of principles guiding the generation of these movements is incomplete. How the nervous system ensures stability or compensates for injury and constraints – are among the unanswered questions today. Furthermore, only through movement can a human impose their will and interact with the world around them. Damage to a part of the motor control system can lower a person’s quality of life. Understanding how the central nervous system (CNS) forms control signals and executes them helps with the construction of devices and rehabilitation …

Near-Optimal Control Of Switched Systems With Continuous-Time Dynamics Using Approximate Dynamic Programming, Tohid Sardarmehni Apr 2018

Near-Optimal Control Of Switched Systems With Continuous-Time Dynamics Using Approximate Dynamic Programming, Tohid Sardarmehni

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

Optimal control is a control method which provides inputs that minimize a performance index subject to state or input constraints [58]. The existing solutions for finding the exact optimal control solution such as Pontryagin’s minimum principle and dynamic programming suffer from curse of dimensionality in high order dynamical systems. One remedy for this problem is finding near optimal solution instead of the exact optimal solution to avoid curse of dimensionality [31]. A method for finding the approximate optimal solution is through Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) methods which are discussed in the subsequent chapters.

In this dissertation, optimal switching in switched …

Applying Gmdh-Type Neural Network And Particle Warm Optimization For Prediction Of Liquefaction Induced Lateral Displacements, Reza A. Jirdehi, Hamidreza T. Mamoudan, Hossein H. Sarkaleh Dec 2014

Applying Gmdh-Type Neural Network And Particle Warm Optimization For Prediction Of Liquefaction Induced Lateral Displacements, Reza A. Jirdehi, Hamidreza T. Mamoudan, Hossein H. Sarkaleh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Lateral spreading and flow failure are amongst the most destructive effects of liquefaction. Estimation of the peril of lateral spreading requires characterization of subsurface conditions, principally soil density, fine content, groundwater conditions, site topography and seismic characteristics. In this paper a GMDH-type neural network and particle swarm optimization is developed for prediction of liquefaction induced lateral displacements. Using this method, a new model was proposed that is suitable for predicting the liquefaction induced lateral displacements. The proposed model was tested before the requested calculation. The data set which is contains 250 data points of liquefaction-induced lateral ground spreading case histories …

Delay Analysis Of A Discrete-Time Non-Preemptive Priority Queue With Priority Jumps, Deepak C. Pandey, Arun K. Pal Jun 2014

Delay Analysis Of A Discrete-Time Non-Preemptive Priority Queue With Priority Jumps, Deepak C. Pandey, Arun K. Pal

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we consider a discrete-time non-preemptive priority queueing model with priority jumps. Two classes, real-time (high priority) and non-real time (low priority), of traffic will be considered with providing jumps from lower priority traffic to the queue of high priority traffic. We derive expressions for the joint probability generating function of the system contents of the high and the low priority traffic in the steady state and also for some performance measures such as the mean value of the system contents and the packet delay. The behavior of the priority queues with priority jumps will be illustrated by …

A Mathematical Framework For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Obstacle Avoidance, Sorathan Chaturapruek Jan 2014

A Mathematical Framework For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Obstacle Avoidance, Sorathan Chaturapruek

HMC Senior Theses

The obstacle avoidance navigation problem for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is a very challenging problem. It lies at the intersection of many fields such as probability, differential geometry, optimal control, and robotics. We build a mathematical framework to solve this problem for quadrotors using both a theoretical approach through a Hamiltonian system and a machine learning approach that learns from human sub-experts' multiple demonstrations in obstacle avoidance. Prior research on the machine learning approach uses an algorithm that does not incorporate geometry. We have developed tools to solve and test the obstacle avoidance problem through mathematics.

A Cauchy Problem For Some Local Fractional Abstract Differential Equation With Fractal Conditions, Yang Xiaojun, Zhong Weiping, Gao Feng Jan 2013

A Cauchy Problem For Some Local Fractional Abstract Differential Equation With Fractal Conditions, Yang Xiaojun, Zhong Weiping, Gao Feng

Xiao-Jun Yang

Fractional calculus is an important method for mathematics and engineering [1-24]. In this paper, we review the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the local fractional differential equation with fractal conditions \[ D^\alpha x\left( t \right)=f\left( {t,x\left( t \right)} \right),t\in \left[ {0,T} \right], x\left( {t_0 } \right)=x_0 , \] where $0<\alpha \le 1$ in a generalized Banach space. We use some new tools from Local Fractional Functional Analysis [25, 26] to obtain the results.

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski Jan 2013

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.
