In this paper, we introduced a Henstock-type integral named $N$-integral of a real valued function $f$ on a closed and bounded interval $[a,b]$. The $N$-integrable functions lie entirely between Riemann integrable functions and Henstock integrable functions. It was shown that for a Henstock integrable function $f$ on $[a,b]$ the following are equivalent: \begin{enumerate} \item[$(1)$] The function $f$ is $N$-integrable; \item[$(2)$] There exists a null set $S$ for which given $\epsilon >0$ there exists a gauge $\delta$ such that for any $\delta$-fine partial division $D=\{(\xi,[u,v])\}$ of $[a,b]$ we have \[(\phi_S(D)\cap \Gamma_{\epsilon})\sum |f(v)-f(u)||v-u|<\epsilon\] where $\phi_S(D)=\{(\xi,[u,v])\in D:\xi \notin S\}$ and \[\Gamma_{\epsilon}=\{(\xi,[u,v]): |f(v)-f(u)|\geq \epsilon\}\] \end{enumerate} and \begin{enumerate} \item[$(3)$] The function $f$ is continuous almost everywhere. \end{enumerate} A characterization of continuous almost everywhere functions was also given.
Mathematical Modeling Of Diabetic Foot Ulcers Using Optimal Design And Mixed-Modeling Techniques, Michael Belcher
Mathematical Modeling Of Diabetic Foot Ulcers Using Optimal Design And Mixed-Modeling Techniques, Michael Belcher
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
A mathematical model for the healing response of diabetic foot ulcers was developed using averaged data (Krishna et al., 2015). The model contains four major factors in the healing of wounds using four separate differential equations with 12 parameters. The four differential equations describe the interactions between matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1), tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (TIMP-1), the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the skin, and the fibroblasts, which produce these proteins. Recently, our research group obtained the individual patient data that comprised the averaged data. The research group has since taken several approaches to analyze the model with the individual …
Variational Analysis Of Composite Optimization, Ashkan Mohammadi
Variational Analysis Of Composite Optimization, Ashkan Mohammadi
Wayne State University Dissertations
The dissertation is devoted to the study of the first- and second-order variational analysis of the composite functions with applications to composite optimization. By considering a fairly general composite optimization problem, our analysis covers numerous classes of optimization problems such as constrained optimization; in particular, nonlinear programming, second-order cone programming and semidefinite programming(SDP). Beside constrained optimization problems our framework covers many important composite optimization problems such as the extended nonlinear programming and eigenvalue optimization problem. In first-order analysis we develop the exact first-order calculus via both subderivative and subdifferential. For the second-order part we develop calculus rules via second-order subderivative …
Use Of Kalman Filtering In State And Parameter Estimation Of Diabetes Models, Cassidy Le
Use Of Kalman Filtering In State And Parameter Estimation Of Diabetes Models, Cassidy Le
HMC Senior Theses
Diabetes continues to affect many lives every year, putting those affected by it at higher risk of serious health issues. Despite many efforts, there currently is no cure for diabetes. Nevertheless, researchers continue to study diabetes in hopes of understanding the disease and how it affects people, creating mathematical models to simulate the onset and progression of diabetes. Recent research by David J. Albers, Matthew E. Levine, Andrew Stuart, Lena Mamykina, Bruce Gluckman, and George Hripcsak1 has suggested that these models can be furthered through the use of Data Assimilation, a regression method that synchronizes a model with a …
On Von Neumann Equivalence And Group Approximation Properties, Ishan Ishan
On Von Neumann Equivalence And Group Approximation Properties, Ishan Ishan
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
The notion of von Neumann equivalence (vNE), which encapsulates both measure equivalence and W* -equivalence, was introduced recently by Ishan, Peterson, and Ruth (2019). They have shown that many analytic properties, such as amenability, property (T), the Haagerup property, and proper proximality are preserved under von Neumann equivalence. In this article, we expand on the list of properties that are stable under von Neumann equivalence, and prove that weak amenability, weak Haagerup property, and the approximation property (AP) are von Neumann equivalence invariants. In particular, we get that AP is stable under measure equivalence. Furthermore, our techniques give an alternate …
High Order Explicit Semi-Lagrangian Method For The Solution Of Lagrangian Transport And Stochastic Differential Equations, Hareshram Natarajan
High Order Explicit Semi-Lagrangian Method For The Solution Of Lagrangian Transport And Stochastic Differential Equations, Hareshram Natarajan
CGU Theses & Dissertations
A semi-Lagrangian method is developed for the solution of Lagrangian transport equations and stochastic differential equations that is consistent with Discontinuous Spectral Element Method (DSEM) approximations of Eulerian conservation laws. The method extends the favorable properties of DSEM that include its high-order accuracy, its local and boundary fitted properties and its high performance on parallel platforms for the concurrent semi-Lagrangian and Eulerian solution of a class of time-dependent problems that can be described by coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian formulations. Such formulations include the probabilistic models used for the simulation of chemically reacting turbulent flows or particle-laden flows. Motivated by the high-fidelity simulation …

Adverse Effects Of A Hybrid Nanofluid In A Wavy Non-Uniform Annulus With Convective Boundary Conditions, H. Sadaf, Sara I. Abdelsalam
Basic Science Engineering
The presented investigation theoretically studies the physical characteristics of a two-dimensional incompressible hybrid nanofluid in a non-uniform annulus where the boundaries are flexible. A mixed convective peristaltic mechanism is implemented to model blood-based nanofluids using two different nanoparticles (Ag + Al2O3). Convective boundary conditions are employed and different forms of nanoparticles are discussed (bricks, cylinders and platelets). The problem is shortened by engaging a lubrication method. Exact expressions for the temperature of cumulative heat source/sink standards, hemodynamic velocity, pressure gradient and streamlines of different shapes of nanoparticles are obtained. Special cases of pure blood and the Al2O3 nanofluid of our …
Evaluating An Ordinal Output Using Data Modeling, Algorithmic Modeling, And Numerical Analysis, Martin Keagan Wynne Brown
Evaluating An Ordinal Output Using Data Modeling, Algorithmic Modeling, And Numerical Analysis, Martin Keagan Wynne Brown
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Data and algorithmic modeling are two different approaches used in predictive analytics. The models discussed from these two approaches include the proportional odds logit model (POLR), the vector generalized linear model (VGLM), the classification and regression tree model (CART), and the random forests model (RF). Patterns in the data were analyzed using trigonometric polynomial approximations and Fast Fourier Transforms. Predictive modeling is used frequently in statistics and data science to find the relationship between the explanatory (input) variables and a response (output) variable. Both approaches prove advantageous in different cases depending on the data set. In our case, the data …

Nanomagnetic Resonance Imaging (Nano-Mri) Gives Personalized Medicine A New Perspective, Lorenzo Rosa, Jonathan Blackledge, Albert Boretti
Books/Book chapters
This chapter provides a brief overview of molecular imaging techniques and its present and future potential in personalized medicine, with special a focus on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) approach. It discusses the current techniques that allow for the in vivo visualization of molecular processes at the nanoscale resolution (nano-MRI). Nano-MRI is progressing rapidly thanks to the work of a very small but extremely brilliant community of experts. This paper is not intended to be a comprehensive review of nano-MRI written for these experts, but rather a concise description of the present achievements for a much broader audience of medical …
Agent-Based Modeling Of Locust Foraging And Social Behavior, Hannah Larson
Agent-Based Modeling Of Locust Foraging And Social Behavior, Hannah Larson
HMC Senior Theses
Locust swarms contain millions of individuals and are a threat to agriculture on four continents. At low densities, locusts are solitary foragers; however, when crowded, they undergo an epigenetic phase change to a gregarious state in which they are attracted to other locusts. It is believed that this is an evolutionary adaptation that optimizes the seeking of resources. We have developed an agent-based model based on the solitary-gregarious transition and foraging behaviors due to hunger levels. A novel feature of our model is that it treats food resources as a dynamic variable in the environment. We discuss how social interaction …
A Framework Of Multi-Dimensional And Multi-Scale Modeling With Applications, Zilong Li
A Framework Of Multi-Dimensional And Multi-Scale Modeling With Applications, Zilong Li
Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, a framework for multi-dimensional and multi-scale modeling is proposed. The essential idea is based on oriented space curves, which can be represented as a 3D slender object or 1D step parameters. SMILES and Masks provide functionalities that extend slender objects into branched and other objects. We treat the conversion between 1D, 2D, 3D, and 4D representations as data unification. A mathematical analysis of different methods applied to helices (a special type of space curves) is also provided. Computational implementation utilizes Model-ViewController design principles to integrate data unification with graphical visualizations to create a dashboard. Applications of multi-dimensional …

Association Rules Patterns Discovery From Mixed Data, Welendawa Acharige Charith A. Elson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Finding Association Rules has been a popular unsupervised learning technique for dis covering interesting patterns in commercial data for well over two decades. The method seeks groups of data attributes and their values where their probability density of these attributesattherespectivevaluesismaximized. Therearecurrentlywell-establishedmeth ods for tackling this problem for data with categorical (discrete) attributes. However, for the cases of data with continuous variables, the techniques are largely focusing on cate gorizing continuous variables into intervals of interest and then relying on the categorical data methods to address the problem. We address the problem of finding association rules patterns in mixed data by …
Zero-Inflated Longitudinal Mixture Model For Stochastic Radiographic Lung Compositional Change Following Radiotherapy Of Lung Cancer, Viviana A. Rodríguez Romero
Zero-Inflated Longitudinal Mixture Model For Stochastic Radiographic Lung Compositional Change Following Radiotherapy Of Lung Cancer, Viviana A. Rodríguez Romero
Theses and Dissertations
Compositional data (CD) is mostly analyzed as relative data, using ratios of components, and log-ratio transformations to be able to use known multivariable statistical methods. Therefore, CD where some components equal zero represent a problem. Furthermore, when the data is measured longitudinally, observations are spatially related and appear to come from a mixture population, the analysis becomes highly complex. For this matter, a two-part model was proposed to deal with structural zeros in longitudinal CD using a mixed-effects model. Furthermore, the model has been extended to the case where the non-zero components of the vector might a two component mixture …

Toward Automated Region Detection & Parcellation Of Rat Brain Tissue Images, Alexandro Arnal
Toward Automated Region Detection & Parcellation Of Rat Brain Tissue Images, Alexandro Arnal
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
People who analyze images of biological tissue often rely on segmentation of structures as a preliminary step. In particular, laboratories studying the rat brain manually delineate brain regions to position scientific findings on a brain atlas to propose hypotheses about the rat brain, and ultimately, the human brain. Our work intersects with the preliminary step of delineating regions in images of brain tissue via computational methods.
We investigate pixel-wise classification or segmentation of brain regions using ten histological images of brain tissue sections stained for Nissl substance, and two deep learning models: U-Net and Tile2Vec. Our goal is to assess …

Many engineering and physiological applications deal with situations when a fluid is moving in flexible tubes with elastic walls. In real-life applications like blood flow, a swirl in the fluid often plays an important role, presenting an additional complexity not described by previous theoretical models. We present a theory for the dynamics of the interaction between elastic tubes and swirling fluid flow. The equations are derived using a variational principle, with the incompressibility constraint of the fluid giving rise to a pressure-like term. In order to connect this work with the previous literature, we consider the case of inextensible and …

Simulation Based Inference In Epidemic Models, Tejitha Dharmagadda
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
From ancient times to the modern day, public health has been an area of great interest. Studies on the nature of disease epidemics began around 400 BC and has been a continuous area of study for the well-being of individuals around the world. For over 100 years, epidemiologists and mathematicians have developed numerous mathematical models to improve our understanding of infectious disease dynamics with an eye on controlling and preventing disease outbreak and spread. In this thesis, we discuss several types of mathematical compartmental models such as the SIR, and SIS models. To capture the noise inherent in the real-world, …
Increasing Performance Of Classifiers For Ssvep-Based Brain-Computer Interfaces Using Extension Methods, Ethan Douglas Webster
Increasing Performance Of Classifiers For Ssvep-Based Brain-Computer Interfaces Using Extension Methods, Ethan Douglas Webster
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) provide an alternative communication method that does not require standard physical mediums (speech, typing, etc.). These systems have been implemented to provide additional communication and control options for people with certain motor disabilities. Classification is an important part of BCI systems and consists of inferring user commands from brain activity. Supervised classification methods often achieve higher accuracy, but unsupervised classification methods are useful when training is not practical for the user. This thesis focuses on unsupervised classification algorithms used for a BCI speller application and presents extensions for two existing classifiers that improve classification accuracy and thus …
Maxwell's Equations And Yang-Mills Equations In Complex Variables : New Perspectives, Sachin Munshi
Maxwell's Equations And Yang-Mills Equations In Complex Variables : New Perspectives, Sachin Munshi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Maxwell's equations, named after James C. Maxwell, are a U(1) gauge theory describing the interactions between electric and magnetic fields. They lie at the heart of classical electromagnetism and electrodynamics. Yang-Mills equations, named after C. N. Yang and Robert Mills, generalize Maxwell's equations and are associated with a non-abelian gauge theory called Yang-Mills theory. Yang-Mills theory unified the electroweak interaction with the strong interaction (QCD), and it is the foundation of the Standard Model in particle physics.
An Exploration Of 5g Wireless Network Attenuation Using Finite Element Analysis In Comsol Multiphysics, Matthew Johnson
An Exploration Of 5g Wireless Network Attenuation Using Finite Element Analysis In Comsol Multiphysics, Matthew Johnson
CMC Senior Theses
5G, ultra-high frequency wireless networks face numerous hurdles due to significant signal attenuation in materials and large path loss. Empirical research on signal attenuation has been limited to low frequencies or very select high frequencies. This paper utilizes Finite Element Analysis in COMSOL Multiphysics to analyze signal attenuation in materials over a range of the frequency spectrum, from 100Mhz to 40Ghz, which is inclusive of 5G wireless frequencies. The focus of this paper is on glass and dry wood, as well as wet wood (representative of trees), as these materials are some of the most likely to stand in the …
On The Intermediate Long Wave Propagation For Internal Waves In The Presence Of Currents, Joseph Cullen, Rossen Ivanov
On The Intermediate Long Wave Propagation For Internal Waves In The Presence Of Currents, Joseph Cullen, Rossen Ivanov
Articles
A model for the wave motion of an internal wave in the presence of current in the case of intermediate long wave approximation is studied. The lower layer is considerably deeper, with a higher density than the upper layer. The flat surface approximation is assumed. The fluids are incompressible and inviscid. The model equations are obtained from the Hamiltonian formulation of the dynamics in the presence of a depth-varying current. It is shown that an appropriate scaling leads to the integrable Intermediate Long Wave Equation (ILWE). Two limits of the ILWE leading to the integrable Benjamin-Ono and KdV equations are …
Camassa-Holm Cuspons, Solitons And Their Interactions Via The Dressing Method, Rossen Ivanov, Tony Lyons, Nigel Orr
Camassa-Holm Cuspons, Solitons And Their Interactions Via The Dressing Method, Rossen Ivanov, Tony Lyons, Nigel Orr
Articles
A dressing method is applied to a matrix Lax pair for the Camassa–Holm equation, thereby allowing for the construction of several global solutions of the system. In particular, solutions of system of soliton and cuspon type are constructed explicitly. The interactions between soliton and cuspon solutions of the system are investigated. The geometric aspects of the Camassa–Holm equation are re-examined in terms of quantities which can be explicitly constructed via the inverse scattering method.

A Mass Conserving Mixed Stress Formulation For Stokes Flow With Weakly Imposed Stress Symmetry, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Philip L. Lederer, Joachim Schoeberl
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We introduce a new discretization of a mixed formulation of the incompressible Stokes equations that includes symmetric viscous stresses. The method is built upon a mass conserving mixed formulation that we recently studied. The improvement in this work is a new method that directly approximates the viscous fluid stress $\sigma$, enforcing its symmetry weakly. The finite element space in which the stress is approximated consists of matrix-valued functions having continuous “normal-tangential” components across element interfaces. Stability is achieved by adding certain matrix bubbles that were introduced earlier in the literature on finite elements for linear elasticity. Like the earlier work, …

Unitary And Symmetric Structure In Deep Neural Networks, Kehelwala Dewage Gayan Maduranga
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have been successfully used on a wide range of sequential data problems. A well-known difficulty in using RNNs is the vanishing or exploding gradient problem. Recently, there have been several different RNN architectures that try to mitigate this issue by maintaining an orthogonal or unitary recurrent weight matrix. One such architecture is the scaled Cayley orthogonal recurrent neural network (scoRNN), which parameterizes the orthogonal recurrent weight matrix through a scaled Cayley transform. This parametrization contains a diagonal scaling matrix consisting of positive or negative one entries that can not be optimized by gradient descent. Thus the …

Orthogonal Recurrent Neural Networks And Batch Normalization In Deep Neural Networks, Kyle Eric Helfrich
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Despite the recent success of various machine learning techniques, there are still numerous obstacles that must be overcome. One obstacle is known as the vanishing/exploding gradient problem. This problem refers to gradients that either become zero or unbounded. This is a well known problem that commonly occurs in Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). In this work we describe how this problem can be mitigated, establish three different architectures that are designed to avoid this issue, and derive update schemes for each architecture. Another portion of this work focuses on the often used technique of batch normalization. Although found to be successful …
Filtered-Dynamic-Inversion Control For Unknown Minimum-Phase Systems With Unknown Relative Degree, Sumit Suryakant Kamat
Filtered-Dynamic-Inversion Control For Unknown Minimum-Phase Systems With Unknown Relative Degree, Sumit Suryakant Kamat
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
We present filtered-dynamic-inversion (FDI) control for unknown linear time-invariant systems that are multi-input multi-output and minimum phase with unknown-but-bounded relative degree. This FDI controller requires limited model information, specifically, knowledge of an upper bound on the relative degree and knowledge of the first nonzero Markov parameter. The FDI controller is a single-parameter high-parameter-stabilizing controller that is robust to uncertainty in the relative degree. We characterize the stability of the closed-loop system. We present numerical examples, where the FDI controller is implemented in feedback with mathematical and physical systems. The numerical examples demonstrate that the FDI controller for unknown relative degree …

We consider a family of three point n − 2, 1, 1 conjugate boundary value problems for nth order nonlinear ordinary differential equations and obtain conditions in terms of uniqueness of solutions imply existence of solutions. A standard hypothesis that has proved effective in uniqueness implies existence type results is to assume uniqueness of solutions of a large family of n−point boundary value problems. Here, we replace that standard hypothesis with one in which we assume uniqueness of solutions of large families of two and three point boundary value problems. We then close the paper with verifiable conditions on the …

In the paper we describe how income and price changes affect consumer's decision making using the Slutsky Identity. We also investigate economical meaning of curve turn-movements of consumer's budget. For analyzing the changes of consumer's choice we are using two step movements (turn, then parallel movement) of budget curve.
