Three Methods For Solving The Low Energy Neutron Boltzmann Equation, Tony Charles Slaba Apr 2007

Three Methods For Solving The Low Energy Neutron Boltzmann Equation, Tony Charles Slaba

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The solution to the neutron Boltzmann equation is separated into a straightahead component dominating at high energies and an isotropic component dominating at low energies. The high-energy solution is calculated using HZETRN-05, and the low-energy isotropic component is modeled by two non-coupled integro-differential equations describing both forward and backward neutron propagation. Three different solution methods are then used to solve the equations. The collocation method employs linear I3-splines to transform each equation into a system of ODES; the resulting system is then solved exactly and evaluated using numerical integration techniques. Wilson's method uses a perturbational approach in which a fundamental …

Approximations Of Continuous Newton's Method: An Extension Of Cayley's Problem, Jon T. Jacobsen, Owen Lewis '05, Bradley Tennis '06 Feb 2007

Approximations Of Continuous Newton's Method: An Extension Of Cayley's Problem, Jon T. Jacobsen, Owen Lewis '05, Bradley Tennis '06

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Continuous Newton's Method refers to a certain dynamical system whose associated flow generically tends to the roots of a given polynomial. An Euler approximation of this system, with step size h=1, yields the discrete Newton's method algorithm for finding roots. In this note we contrast Euler approximations with several different approximations of the continuous ODE system and, using computer experiments, consider their impact on the associated fractal basin boundaries of the roots

Hartman-Grobman Theorems Along Hyperbolic Stationary Trajectories, Edson A. Coayla-Teran, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Paulo Régis C. Ruffino Feb 2007

Hartman-Grobman Theorems Along Hyperbolic Stationary Trajectories, Edson A. Coayla-Teran, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Paulo Régis C. Ruffino

Articles and Preprints

We extend the Hartman-Grobman theorems on discrete random dynamical systems (RDS), proved in [7], in two directions: For continuous RDS and for hyperbolic stationary trajectories. In this last case there exists a conjugacy between traveling neighbourhoods of trajectories and neighbourhoods of the origin in the corresponding tangent bundle. We present applications to deterministic dynamical systems.

Strings, Chains, And Ropes, Darryl H. Yong Nov 2006

Strings, Chains, And Ropes, Darryl H. Yong

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Following Antman [Amer. Math. Mon., 87 (1980), pp. 359–370], we advocate a more physically realistic and systematic derivation of the wave equation suitable for a typical undergraduate course in partial differential equations. To demonstrate the utility of this derivation, three applications that follow naturally are described: strings, hanging chains, and jump ropes.

Development And Validation Of Reentry Simulation Using Matlab, Robert E. Jameson Jr. Jun 2006

Development And Validation Of Reentry Simulation Using Matlab, Robert E. Jameson Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort develops a program using MATLAB to solve the equations of motion for atmospheric reentry and analyzes the validity of the program for use as a tool to expeditiously predict reentry profiles. The reentry vehicle is modeled as a point mass with constant aerodynamic properties as defined by the user. The equations of motion for reentry are based on the two-body problem. The atmosphere is modeled as a single layer exponentially decreasing in density. The MATLAB program has the ability to derive the initial trajectory conditions from the position and velocity relative to the rotating surface of the …

Optimal Therapy Regimens For Treatment-Resistant Mutations Of Hiv, Weiqing Gu, Helen Moore Jan 2006

Optimal Therapy Regimens For Treatment-Resistant Mutations Of Hiv, Weiqing Gu, Helen Moore

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper, we use control theory to determine optimal treatment regimens for HIV patients, taking into account treatment-resistant mutations of the virus. We perform optimal control analysis on a model developed previously for the dynamics of HIV with strains of various resistance to treatment (Moore and Gu, 2005). This model incorporates three types of resistance to treatments: strains that are not responsive to protease inhibitors, strains not responsive to reverse transcriptase inhibitors, and strains not responsive to either of these treatments. We solve for the optimal treatment regimens analytically and numerically. We find parameter regimes for which optimal dosing …

Multivalued Logic, Neutrosophy And Schrodinger Equation, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto Dec 2005

Multivalued Logic, Neutrosophy And Schrodinger Equation, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This book was intended to discuss some paradoxes in Quantum Mechanics from the viewpoint of Multi-Valued-logic pioneered by Lukasiewicz, and a recent concept Neutrosophic Logic. Essentially, this new concept offers new insights on the idea of ‘identity’, which too often it has been accepted as given. Neutrosophy itself was developed in attempt to generalize Fuzzy-Logic introduced by L. Zadeh. While some aspects of theoretical foundations of logic are discussed, this book is not intended solely for pure mathematicians, but instead for physicists in the hope that some of ideas presented herein will be found useful. The book is motivated by …

A Mathematical Model For Treatment-Resistant Mutations Of Hiv, Helen Moore, Weiqing Gu Apr 2005

A Mathematical Model For Treatment-Resistant Mutations Of Hiv, Helen Moore, Weiqing Gu

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper, we propose and analyze a mathematical model, in the form of a system of ordinary differential equations, governing mutated strains of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and their interactions with the immune system and treatments. Our model incorporates two types of resistant mutations: strains that are not responsive to protease inhibitors, and strains that are not responsive to reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It also includes strains that do not have either of these two types of resistance (wild-type virus) and strains that have both types. We perform our analysis by changing the system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to …

A Sampling And Transformation Approach To Solving Random Differential Equations, Roger A. Erich Mar 2005

A Sampling And Transformation Approach To Solving Random Differential Equations, Roger A. Erich

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores an innovative sampling method used to conduct uncertainty analysis on a system with one random input. Given the distribution of the random input, X, we seek to find the distribution of the output random variable Y. When the functional form of the transformation Y=g(X) is not explicitly known, complicated procedures, such as stochastic projection or Monte Carlo simulation must be employed. The main focus of this research is determining the distribution of the random variable Y=g(X) where g(X) is the solution to an ordinary differential equation and X is a random parameter. Here, y=g(X) is approximated by …

Reconstruction Of An Unknown Boundary Portion From Cauchy Data In N- Dimensions, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill Feb 2005

Reconstruction Of An Unknown Boundary Portion From Cauchy Data In N- Dimensions, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the inverse problem of determining the shape of some inaccessible portion of the boundary of a region in n dimensions from Cauchy data for the heat equation on an accessible portion of the boundary. The inverse problem is quite ill-posed, and nonlinear. We develop a Newton-like algorithm for solving the problem, with a simple and efficient means for computing the required derivatives, develop methods for regularizing the process, and provide computational examples.

A Liouville-Gelfand Equation For K-Hessian Operators, Jon T. Jacobsen Jul 2004

A Liouville-Gelfand Equation For K-Hessian Operators, Jon T. Jacobsen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper we establish existence and multiplicity results for a class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations of k-Hessian type with exponential nonlinearity. In particular, we characterize the precise dependence of the multiplicity of solutions with respect to both the space dimension and the value of k. The choice of exponential nonlinearity is motivated by the classical Liouville-Gelfand problem from combustible gas dynamics and prescribed curvature problems.

Examples Of Cayley 4-Manifolds, Weiqing Gu, Christopher Pries '03 Jan 2004

Examples Of Cayley 4-Manifolds, Weiqing Gu, Christopher Pries '03

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We determine several families of so-called Cayley 4-dimensional manifolds in the real Euclidean 8-space. Such manifolds are of interest because Cayley 4-manifolds are supersymmetric cycles that are candidates for representations of fundamental particles in String Theory. Moreover, some of the examples of Cayley manifolds discovered in this paper may be modified to construct explicit examples in our current search for new holomorphic invariants for Calabi-Yau 4-folds and for the further development of mirror symmetry.

We apply the classic results of Harvey and Lawson to find Cayley manifolds which are graphs of functions from the set of quaternions to itself. We …

Discrete-Time Approximations Of Stochastic Delay Equations: The Milstein Scheme, Yaozhong Hu, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Feng Yan Jan 2004

Discrete-Time Approximations Of Stochastic Delay Equations: The Milstein Scheme, Yaozhong Hu, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Feng Yan

Articles and Preprints

In this paper, we develop a strong Milstein approximation scheme for solving stochastic delay differential equations (SDDE's). The scheme has convergence order 1. In order to establish the scheme, we prove an infinite-dimensional Itô formula for "tame" functions acting on the segment process of the solution of an SDDE. It is interesting to note that the presence of the memory in the SDDE requires the use of the Malliavin calculus and the anticipating stochastic analysis of Nualart and Pardoux. Given the non-anticipating nature of the SDDE, the use of anticipating calculus methods appears to be novel.

On The Empirical Balanced Truncation For Nonlinear Systems, Marissa Condon, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2004

On The Empirical Balanced Truncation For Nonlinear Systems, Marissa Condon, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

Novel constructions of empirical controllability and observability gramians for nonlinear systems for subsequent use in a balanced truncation style of model reduction are proposed. The new gramians are based on a generalisation of the fundamental solution for a Linear Time-Varying system. Relationships between the given gramians for nonlinear systems and the standard gramians for both Linear Time-Invariant and Linear Time-Varying systems are established as well as relationships to prior constructions proposed for empirical gramians. Application of the new gramians is illustrated through a sample test-system.

Analysis Of A Multigrid Algorithm For Time Harmonic Maxwell Equations, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak, Leszek Demkowicz Jan 2004

Analysis Of A Multigrid Algorithm For Time Harmonic Maxwell Equations, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak, Leszek Demkowicz

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper considers a multigrid algorithm suitable for efficient solution of indefinite linear systems arising from finite element discretization of time harmonic Maxwell equations. In particular, a "backslash" multigrid cycle is proven to converge at rates independent of refinement level if certain indefinite block smoothers are used. The method of analysis involves comparing the multigrid error reduction operator with that of a related positive definite multigrid operator. This idea has previously been used in multigrid analysis of indefinite second order elliptic problems. However, the Maxwell application involves a nonelliptic indefinite operator. With the help of a few new estimates, the …

A Forward-Backward Fluence Model For The Low-Energy Neutron Boltzmann Equation, Gary Alan Feldman Jul 2003

A Forward-Backward Fluence Model For The Low-Energy Neutron Boltzmann Equation, Gary Alan Feldman

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In this research work, the neutron Boltzmann equation was separated into two coupled integro-differential equations describing forward and backward neutron fluence in selected materials. Linear B-splines were used to change the integro-differential equations into a coupled system of ordinary differential equations (O.D.E.'s). Difference approximations were then used to recast the O.D.E.'s into a coupled system of linear equations that were solved for forward and backward neutron fluences. Adding forward and backward fluences gave the total fluence at selected energies and depths in the material. Neutron fluences were computed in single material shields and in a shield followed by a target …

Monotone Solutions Of A Nonautonomous Differential Equation For A Sedimenting Sphere, Andrew Belmonte, Jon T. Jacobsen, Anandhan Jayaraman

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We study a class of integrodifferential equations and related ordinary differential equations for the initial value problem of a rigid sphere falling through an infinite fluid medium. We prove that for creeping Newtonian flow, the motion of the sphere is monotone in its approach to the steady state solution given by the Stokes drag. We discuss this property in terms of a general nonautonomous second order differential equation, focusing on a decaying nonautonomous term motivated by the sedimenting sphere problem

Simulation Of Engineering Systems Described By High-Index Dae And Discontinuous Ode Using Single Step Methods, Marc Compere Aug 2001

Simulation Of Engineering Systems Described By High-Index Dae And Discontinuous Ode Using Single Step Methods, Marc Compere

Publications

This dissertation presents numerical methods for solving two classes of or-dinary diferential equations (ODE) based on single-step integration meth-ods. The first class of equations addressed describes the mechanical dynamics of constrained multibody systems. These equations are ordinary differential equations (ODE) subject to algebraic constraints. Accordinly they are called differential-algebraic equations (DAE).

Specific contributions made in this area include an explicit transforma-tion between the Hessenberg index-3 form for constrained mechanical systems to a canonical state-space form used in the nonlinear control communities. A hybrid solution method was developed that incorporates both sliding-mode control (SMC) from the controls literature and post-stabilization from …

An Analysis Of Unsolvable Linear Partial Differential Equations Of Order One, Laura J. Fields Jan 2001

An Analysis Of Unsolvable Linear Partial Differential Equations Of Order One, Laura J. Fields

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

It is difficult to underestimate the importance of differential equations in understanding the physical world. These equations, involving not just simple variables like temperature, speed or mass, but also the derivatives, i.e. the rate of change of these variables, are found in nearly every branch of science. Until the mid 20th century, all such equations were thought to be solvable. This was based on the discovery by Leonard Euler that certain differential equations, called ordinary differential equations (ODEs), are indeed always solvable. While ODEs deal with simple conditions, under which some quantity changes with some other quantity and its derivatives, …

We study the isospectral set of L(p) when L(p) has simple spectrum. In particular we show that for such p …

Steady Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Flow Near A Point Of Reattachment, J. M. Dorrepaal, S. Moosavizadeh Jan 1998

Steady Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Flow Near A Point Of Reattachment, J. M. Dorrepaal, S. Moosavizadeh

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The oblique stagnation-point flow of an electrically conducting fluid in the presence of a magnetic field is a highly nonlinear problem whose solution is of interest even in the simplest of geometries. The problem models the flow of a viscous conducting fluid near a point where a separation vortex reattaches itself to a rigid boundary. A similarity solution exists which reduces the problem to a coupled system of four ordinary differential equations which can be integrated numerically. The problem has two independent parameters, the conductivity of the fluid and the strength of the magnetic field. Solutions are tabulated for a …

Lyapunov Exponents Of Linear Stochastic Functional-Differential Equations. Ii. Examples And Case Studies, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Michael K. R. Scheutzow Jan 1997

Lyapunov Exponents Of Linear Stochastic Functional-Differential Equations. Ii. Examples And Case Studies, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Michael K. R. Scheutzow

Articles and Preprints

We give several examples and examine case studies of linear stochastic functional differential equations. The examples fall into two broad classes: regular and singular, according to whether an underlying stochastic semi-flow exists or not. In the singular case, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the maximal exponential growth rate $\overlineλ1$(σ) of the trajectories expressed in terms of the noise variance σ . Roughly speaking we show that for small σ, $\overlineλ1$(σ) behaves like -σ2 /2, while for large σ, it grows like logσ. In the regular case, it is shown that a discrete Oseledec …

Series Solutions, Factorials, And The Gamma Function, Steven J. Wilson

Using a power series to solve an ordinary differential equation will often result in a solution whose general term involves a product of terms from an arithmetic sequence. This paper explores how factorials and the gamma function can be used to rewrite such general terms in a closed form.

Robot Space Coordinate Representation Of Objects In Euclidean Space, Justin Gallagher Jun 1994

Robot Space Coordinate Representation Of Objects In Euclidean Space, Justin Gallagher

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Robot motion control strategies generally center around trajectory planning schemes which are point-to-point. This paper explores the problem of planning robot trajectories which sweep an area in a two-link robot's work space. A diffeomorphism which transforms the linear coordinates of Euclidean space to the non-linear angular coordinates which represent the displacements of the joint motors is developed. It is used to determine the distortion of an object's area at different locations in the robot's work space and for different robot link length geometries. Study of such distortions may lead to an optimization scheme by which the placement of the object …

A Bifurcation Theorem And Applications, Alfonso Castro, Jorge Cossio

In this paper we give a sufficient condition on the nonlinear operator N for a point (λ, u) to be a local bifurcation point of equations of the form u + λL-1(N(u)) = 0, where L is a linear operator in a real Hilbert space, L has compact inverse, and λ ∈ R is a parameter. Our result does not depend on the variational structure of the equation or the multiplicity of the eigenvalue of the linear operator L. Applications are made to systems of differential equations and to the existence of periodic solutions of nonlinear second order …
