Comparison Differential Transformation Technique With Adomian Decomposition Method For Dispersive Long-Wave Equations In (2+1)-Dimensions, M. A. Mohamed Jun 2010

Comparison Differential Transformation Technique With Adomian Decomposition Method For Dispersive Long-Wave Equations In (2+1)-Dimensions, M. A. Mohamed

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we will introduce two methods to obtain the numerical solutions for the system of dispersive long-wave equations (DLWE) in (2+1)-dimensions. The first method is the differential transformation method (DTM) and the second method is Adomian decomposition method (ADM). Moreover, we will make comparison between the solutions obtained by the two methods. Consequently, the results of our system tell us the two methods can be alternative ways for solution of the linear and nonlinear higher-order initial value problems.

Improved Dust Acoustic Solitary Waves In Two Temperature Dust Fluids, E. K. El-Shewy, H. G. Abdelwahed, M. I. Abo El Maaty, M. A. Elmessary

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A theoretical investigation is carried out for contribution of the higher-order nonlinearity to nonlinear dust-acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) in an unmagnetized two types of dust fluids (one cold and the other is hot) in the presence of Bolltzmannian ions and electrons. A KdV equation that contains the lowest-order nonlinearity and dispersion is derived from the lowest order of perturbation and a linear inhomogeneous (KdV-type) equation that accounts for the higher-order nonlinearity and dispersion is obtained. A stationary solution for equations resulting from higher-order perturbation theory has been found using the renormalization method. The effects of hot and cold dust charge …

Variational Iteration Method For Solving Two-Parameter Singularly Perturbed Two Point Boundary Value Problem, Marwan Taiseer Alquran, Nurettin Doğan Jun 2010

Variational Iteration Method For Solving Two-Parameter Singularly Perturbed Two Point Boundary Value Problem, Marwan Taiseer Alquran, Nurettin Doğan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, He’s Variational iteration method (VIM) is used for the solution of singularly perturbed two-point boundary value problems with two small parameters multiplying the derivatives. Some problems are solved to demonstrate the applicability of the method. This paper suggests a patern for choosing the freely selected initial approximation in the VIM that leads to a very well approximation by only one iteration.

Approximations Of Sturm-Liouville Eigenvalues Using Sinc-Galerkin And Differential Transform Methods, Marwan Taiseer Alquran, Kamel Al-Khaled

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we present a comparative study of Sinc-Galerkin method and differential transform method to solve Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem. As an application, a comparison between the two methods for various celebrated Sturm-Liouville problems are analyzed for their eigenvalues and solutions. The study outlines the significant features of the two methods. The results show that these methods are very efficient, and can be applied to a large class of problems. The comparison of the methods shows that although the numerical results of these methods are the same, differential transform method is much easier, and more efficient than the Sinc-Galerkin method.

Temperature Profiles In A Disc Brake, K. Venkateswara Reddy, D. Rama Murthy Jun 2010

Temperature Profiles In A Disc Brake, K. Venkateswara Reddy, D. Rama Murthy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The Science of heat transfer allows us to determine the time rate of energy transfer caused by non equilibrium of temperatures. The importance of heat transfer in proper design of Automobiles has long been recognized. In this paper we determined the transient temperature distributions in a disc brake during a single brake application using Finite difference numerical technique. Hyperbolic heat conduction which includes the effect of the finite heat propagation is gaining importance. It is necessary to consider hyperbolic heat conduction in problems involving short time intervals and for very high heat fluxes. Here we considered both parabolic and hyperbolic …

Metastability And Plasticity In A Conceptual Model Of Neurons, Bo Deng Jan 2010

Metastability And Plasticity In A Conceptual Model Of Neurons, Bo Deng

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

For a new class of neuron models we demonstrate here that typical membrane action potentials and spike-bursts are only transient states but appear to be asymptotically stable; and yet such metastable states are plastic — being able to dynamically change from one action potential to another with different pulse frequencies and from one spike-burst to another with different spike-per-burst numbers. The pulse and spike-burst frequencies change with individual ions’ pump currents while their corresponding metastable-plastic states maintain the same transmembrane voltage and current profiles in range. It is also demonstrated that the plasticity requires two one-way ion pumps operating in …

A Generalized Nonlinear Model For The Evolution Of Low Frequency Freak Waves, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2010

A Generalized Nonlinear Model For The Evolution Of Low Frequency Freak Waves, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

This paper presents a generalized model for simulating wavefields associated with the sea surface. This includes the case when `freak waves' may occur through an effect compounded in the nonlinear (cubic) Schrodinger equation. After providing brief introductions to linear sea wave models, `freak waves' and the linear and nonlinear Schrodinger equations, we present a unified model that provides for a piecewise continuous transition from a linear to a nonlinear state. This is based on introducing a fractional time derivative to develop a fractional nonlinear partial differential equation with a stochastic source function. In order to explore the characteristics of this …

Properties Of The Generalized Laplace Transform And Transport Partial Dynamic Equation On Time Scales, Chris R. Ahrendt Jan 2010

Properties Of The Generalized Laplace Transform And Transport Partial Dynamic Equation On Time Scales, Chris R. Ahrendt

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this dissertation, we first focus on the generalized Laplace transform on time scales. We prove several properties of the generalized exponential function which will allow us to explore some of the fundamental properties of the Laplace transform. We then give a description of the region in the complex plane for which the improper integral in the definition of the Laplace transform converges, and how this region is affected by the time scale in question. Conditions under which the Laplace transform of a power series can be computed term-by-term are given. We develop a formula for the Laplace transform for …

Efficient Simulation Of Fluid Flow, David Hannasch, Monika Neda Aug 2009

Efficient Simulation Of Fluid Flow, David Hannasch, Monika Neda

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

We are computationally investigating fluid flow models for physically correct predictions of flow structures. Models based on the idea of filtering the small scales/structures and also the Navier-Stokes equations which are the fundamental equations of fluid flow, are numerically solved via the continuous finite element method. Crank-Nicolson and fractional-step theta scheme are used for the discretization of the time derivative, while the Taylor-Hood and Mini elements are used for the discretization is space. The effectiveness of these numerical discretizations in time and space are examined by studying the accuracy of fluid characteristics, such as drag, lift and pressure drop.

A Semilinear Wave Equation With Smooth Data And No Resonance Having No Continuous Solution, Jose F. Caicedo, Alfonso Castro

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We prove that a boundary value problem for a semilinear wave equation with smooth nonlinearity, smooth forcing, and no resonance cannot have continuous solutions. Our proof shows that this is due to the non-monotonicity of the nonlinearity.

An Adaptive Method For Calculating Blow-Up Solutions, Charles F. Touron Jul 2009

An Adaptive Method For Calculating Blow-Up Solutions, Charles F. Touron

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Reactive-diffusive systems modeling physical phenomena in certain situations develop a singularity at a finite value of the independent variable referred to as "blow-up." The attempt to find the blow-up time analytically is most often impossible, thus requiring a numerical determination of the value. The numerical methods often use a priori knowledge of the blow-up solution such as monotonicity or self-similarity. For equations where such a priori knowledge is unavailable, ad hoc methods were constructed. The object of this research is to develop a simple and consistent approach to find numerically the blow-up solution without having a priori knowledge or resorting …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, we have discussed a new application of Adomian decomposition method on nonlinear physical equations. The models of interest in physics are considered and solved by means of Adomian decomposition method. The behavior of Adomian solutions and the effects of different values of time are investigated. Numerical illustrations that include nonlinear physical models are investigated to show the pertinent features of the technique.

Analytical Upstream Collocation Solution Of A Quadratic Forced Steady-State Convection-Diffusion Equation, Eric Paul Smith May 2009

Analytical Upstream Collocation Solution Of A Quadratic Forced Steady-State Convection-Diffusion Equation, Eric Paul Smith

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we present the exact solution to the Hermite collocation discretization of a quadratically forced steady-state convection-diffusion equation in one spatial dimension with constant coeffcients, defined on a uniform mesh, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. To improve the accuracy of the method we use \upstream weighting" of the convective term in an optimal way. We also provide a method to determine where the forcing function should be optimally sampled. Computational examples are given, which support and illustrate the theory of the optimal sampling of the convective and forcing term.

Finding Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Dynamic Equations On Time Scale, Olusegun Michael Otunuga Jan 2009

Finding Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Dynamic Equations On Time Scale, Olusegun Michael Otunuga

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis is on the study of dynamic equations on time scale. Most often, the derivatives and anti-derivatives of functions are taken on the domain of real numbers, which cannot be used to solve some models like insect populations that are continuous while in season and then follow a difference scheme with variable step-size. They die out in winter, while the eggs are incubating or dormant; and then they hatch in a new season, giving rise to a non overlapping population. The general idea of my thesis is to find the conditions for having a positive solution of any boundary …

Conceptual Circuit Models Of Neurons, Bo Deng Jan 2009

Conceptual Circuit Models Of Neurons, Bo Deng

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

A systematic circuit approach tomodel neurons with ion pump is presented here by which the voltage-gated current channels are modeled as conductors, the diffusion-induced current channels are modeled as negative resistors, and the one-way ion pumps are modeled as one-way inductors. The newly synthesized models are different from the type of models based on Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) approach which aggregates the electro, the diffusive, and the pump channels of each ion into one conductance channel. We show that our new models not only recover many known properties of the HH type models but also exhibit some new that cannot be extracted …

Homotopy Perturbation Method And Padé Approximants For Solving Flierl-Petviashivili Equation, Syed T. Mohynd-Din, Muhammad A. Noor

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we present a reliable combination of homotopy perturbation method and Padé approximants to investigate the Flierl-Petviashivili (FP) equation. The approach introduces a new transformation necessary for the conversion of the Flierl-Petviashivili equation to a first order initial value problem and a reliable framework designed to overcome the difficulty of the singular point at x = 0. The proposed homotopy perturbation method is applied to the reformulated first order initial value problem which leads the solution in terms of transformed variable. The desired series solution is obtained by making use of the inverse transformation. The suggested algorithm may …

A Reliable Approach For Higher-Order Integro-Differential Equations, Muhammad A. Noor, Syed T. Mohyud-Din Dec 2008

A Reliable Approach For Higher-Order Integro-Differential Equations, Muhammad A. Noor, Syed T. Mohyud-Din

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we apply the variational iteration method (VIM) for solving higher-order integro differential equations by converting the problems into system of integral equations. The proposed technique is applied to the re-formulated system of integro-differential equations. Numerical results show the accuracy and efficiency of the suggested algorithm. The fact that the VIM solves nonlinear problems without calculating Adomian’s polynomials is a clear advantage of this technique over the decomposition method.

Solving Higher Dimensional Initial Boundary Value Problems By Variational Iteration Decomposition Method, Muhammad A. Noor, Syed T. Mohyud-Din

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we apply a relatively new technique which is called the variational iteration decomposition method (VIDM) by combining the traditional variational iteration and the decomposition methods for solving higher dimensional initial boundary value problems. The proposed method is an elegant combination of variational iteration and the decomposition methods. The analytical results of the problems have been obtained in terms of convergent series with easily computable components. The method is quite efficient and is practically well suited for use in these problems. Several examples are given to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed technique.

Signed Decomposition Of Fully Fuzzy Linear Systems, Tofigh Allahviranloo, Nasser Mikaeilvand, Narsis A. Kiani, Rasol M. Shabestari

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

System of linear equations is applied for solving many problems in various areas of applied sciences. Fuzzy methods constitute an important mathematical and computational tool for modeling real-world systems with uncertainties of parameters. In this paper, we discuss about fully fuzzy linear systems in the form AX = b (FFLS). A novel method for finding the non-zero fuzzy solutions of these systems is proposed. We suppose that all elements of coefficient matrix A are positive and we employ parametric form linear system. Finally, Numerical examples are presented to illustrate this approach and its results are compared with other methods.

The Weak Euler Scheme For Stochastic Delay Equations, Evelyn Buckwar, Rachel Kuske, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tony Shardlow May 2008

The Weak Euler Scheme For Stochastic Delay Equations, Evelyn Buckwar, Rachel Kuske, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tony Shardlow

Articles and Preprints

We study weak convergence of an Euler scheme for non-linear stochastic delay differential equations (SDDEs) driven by multidimensional Brownian motion. The Euler scheme has weak order of convergence 1, as in the case of stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs) (i.e., without delay). The result holds for SDDEs with multiple finite fixed delays in the drift and diffusion terms. Although the set-up is non-anticipating, our approach uses the Malliavin calculus and the anticipating stochastic analysis techniques of Nualart and Pardoux.

Traveling Waves And Shocks In A Viscoelastic Generalization Of Burgers' Equation, Victor Camacho '07, Robert D. Guy, Jon T. Jacobsen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We consider traveling wave phenomena for a viscoelastic generalization of Burgers' equation. For asymptotically constant velocity profiles we find three classes of solutions corresponding to smooth traveling waves, piecewise smooth waves, and piecewise constant (shock) solutions. Each solution type is possible for a given pair of asymptotic limits, and we characterize the dynamics in terms of the relaxation time and viscosity.

Models Of Phototransduction In Rod Photoreceptors, Harihar Khanal, Vasilios Alexiades Jan 2008

Models Of Phototransduction In Rod Photoreceptors, Harihar Khanal, Vasilios Alexiades

Publications

Phototransduction is the process by which photons of light generate an electrical response in retinal rod and cone photoreceptors, thereby initiating vision. We compare the electrical response in salamander rods from increasingly more (spacialy) detailed models of phototransduction: 0-dimensional (bulk), 1-dimensional (longitudinal), 2-dimensional (axisymmetric), and 3-dimensional (with incisures). We discuss issues of finding physical parameters for simulation and validation of models, and also present some computational experiments for rods with geometry of mouse and human photoreceptors.

As Flat As Possible, Jon T. Jacobsen Jul 2007

As Flat As Possible, Jon T. Jacobsen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

How does one determine a surface which is as flat as possible, such as those created by soap film surfaces? What does it mean to be as flat as possible? In this paper we address this question from two distinct points of view, one local and one global in nature. Continuing with this theme, we put a temporal twist on the question and ask how to evolve a surface so as to flatten it as efficiently as possible. This elementary discussion provides a platform to introduce a wide range of advanced topics in partial differential equations and helps students …

An Age-Structured Resource-Consumer Dynamical Model, Jean M. Tchuenche Jun 2007

An Age-Structured Resource-Consumer Dynamical Model, Jean M. Tchuenche

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Many dynamical systems in population biology in which agents compete for resources may exhibit chaotic fluctuations. This short letter develops Gamarra and Solé's previous work. We briefly review a classical model of population with complex dynamics, and proceed to study the dynamics of an age-structured resource-consumer model, in which the fertility coefficients are density independent. Implicit or first integral solutions of the model are obtained, and conditions for which they are stable given. It is observed that resource availability at any time depends on the number of potential consumers present.
