Some Graph Laplacians And Variational Methods Applied To Partial Differential Equations On Graphs, Daniel Anthony Corral May 2022

Some Graph Laplacians And Variational Methods Applied To Partial Differential Equations On Graphs, Daniel Anthony Corral

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this dissertation we will be examining partial differential equations on graphs. We start by presenting some basic graph theory topics and graph Laplacians with some minor original results. We move on to computing original Jost graph Laplacians of friendly labelings of various finite graphs. We then continue on to a host of original variational problems on a finite graph. The first variational problem is an original basic minimization problem. Next, we use the Lagrange multiplier approach to the Kazdan-Warner equation on a finite graph, our original results generalize those of Dr. Grigor’yan, Dr. Yang, and Dr. Lin. Then we …

A Survey Of The Br´Ezis-Nirenberg Problem And Related Theorems, Edward Huynh May 2022

A Survey Of The Br´Ezis-Nirenberg Problem And Related Theorems, Edward Huynh

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations on bounded domains arise in several different areas of mathematics that include geometry, mathematical physics, and the calculus of variations. The Br ́ezis-Nirenberg problem is concerned with a boundary-value problem that is intimately connected to the existence of positive solutions of the Yamabe problem, of non-minimal solutions to Yang-Mills functionals, and of extremal functions to several important inequalities. Results on existence and uniqueness have been obtained in cases when the exponent is sub-critical, but such results have not been obtained when the exponent is critical due to a lack of compactness. The earliest results obtained …

Positive Solutions To Semilinear Elliptic Equations With Logistic-Type Nonlinearities And Harvesting In Exterior Domains, Eric Jameson May 2022

Positive Solutions To Semilinear Elliptic Equations With Logistic-Type Nonlinearities And Harvesting In Exterior Domains, Eric Jameson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Existing results provide the existence of positive solutions to a class of semilinear elliptic PDEs with logistic-type nonlinearities and harvesting terms both in RN and in bounded domains U ⊂ RN with N ≥ 3, when the carrying capacity of the environment is not constant. We consider these same equations in the exterior domain Ω, defined as the complement of the closed unit ball in RN , N ≥ 3, now with a Dirichlet boundary condition. We first show that the existing techniques forsolving these equations in the whole space RN can be applied to the exterior domain with some …

Stability Analysis Of Delay-Driven Coupled Cantilevers Using The Lambert W-Function, Daniel Siebel-Cortopassi Apr 2022

Stability Analysis Of Delay-Driven Coupled Cantilevers Using The Lambert W-Function, Daniel Siebel-Cortopassi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A coupled delay-feedback system of two cantilevers can yield greater sensitivity than that of asingle cantilever system, with potential applications in atomic force microscopy. The Lambert W-function analysis concept for delay differential equations is used to more accurately model the behavior of specific configurations of these cantilever systems. We also use this analysis concept to find parameters which yield stability for greater parameter ranges, of the delay differential equations. The Q factor, or quality factor, is the ratio of energy stored in the system, to the energy lost per fixed oscillation/movement cycle. Having stability of the cantilevers corresponds to the …

A Functional Optimization Approach To Stochastic Process Sampling, Ryan Matthew Thurman Apr 2022

A Functional Optimization Approach To Stochastic Process Sampling, Ryan Matthew Thurman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of the current research project is the formulation of a method for the estimation and modeling of additive stochastic processes with both linear- and cycle-type trend components as well as a relatively robust noise component in the form of Levy processes. Most of the research in stochastic processes tends to focus on cases where the process is stationary, a condition that cannot be assumed for the model above due to the presence of the cyclical sub-component in the overall additive process. As such, we outline a number of relevant theoretical and applied topics, such as stochastic processes and …

Relative Energy Comparison For Various Water Clusters Using Mp2, Df-Mp2, And Ccsd(T):Mp2 Methods, Qihang Wang Apr 2022

Relative Energy Comparison For Various Water Clusters Using Mp2, Df-Mp2, And Ccsd(T):Mp2 Methods, Qihang Wang

Honors Theses

The study of water clusters is an important area of research in many disciplines, such as biology, physical chemistry, and environmental studies. However, due to the difficulty in studying larger water clusters, such as clathrate hydrates, it is beneficial to obtain accurate descriptions of smaller water clusters to use as models for larger systems via computational methods. By starting with small water clusters, such as (H2O)6, and moving into larger systems it is possible to build up data on various water structures that can determine the energetics of the various geometries within a certain number of water molecules. …

Eigenfunction Restriction Estimates For Curves With Nonvanishing Geodesic Curvatures In Compact Riemannian Surfaces With Nonpositive Sectional Curvatures, Chamsol Park Apr 2022

Eigenfunction Restriction Estimates For Curves With Nonvanishing Geodesic Curvatures In Compact Riemannian Surfaces With Nonpositive Sectional Curvatures, Chamsol Park

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

For 2 ≤ p < 4, we study the Lp norms of restrictions of eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on smooth compact 2-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. Burq, G\´erard, and Tzvetkov [12], and Hu [21] found eigenfunction restriction estimates for a curve with nonvanishing geodesic curvatures. We will explain how the proof of the known estimates helps us to consider the case where the given smooth compact Riemannian manifold has nonpositive sectional curvatures. For p = 4, we will also obtain a logarithmic analogous estimate, by using arguments in Xi and Zhang [37], Sogge [33], and Bourgain [10]. At the end of this dissertation, we will talk about a future work, which is a follow up study for higher dimensional analogues of the above curve cases.

Intra-Hour Solar Forecasting Using Cloud Dynamics Features Extracted From Ground-Based Infrared Sky Images, Guillermo Terrén-Serrano Apr 2022

Intra-Hour Solar Forecasting Using Cloud Dynamics Features Extracted From Ground-Based Infrared Sky Images, Guillermo Terrén-Serrano

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Due to the increasing use of photovoltaic systems, power grids are vulnerable to the projection of shadows from moving clouds. An intra-hour solar forecast provides power grids with the capability of automatically controlling the dispatch of energy, reducing the additional cost for a guaranteed, reliable supply of energy (i.e., energy storage). This dissertation introduces a novel sky imager consisting of a long-wave radiometric infrared camera and a visible light camera with a fisheye lens. The imager is mounted on a solar tracker to maintain the Sun in the center of the images throughout the day, reducing the scattering effect produced …

Predicting Box Office Revenues Using Differential Equation Models, Brenden David Apr 2022

Predicting Box Office Revenues Using Differential Equation Models, Brenden David

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

The growing popularity of the internet has increased exponentially in the past few decades. This sudden increase in popularity allows for users to gain access to more information than was thought possible in the past, including access to box-office movie revenues of previously released movies. Since we now have access to thousands of movie’s box office revenues, we can analyze some sort of trend within specific genres of movies. With these trends we develop a differential equations model that will predict the box office revenues of a movie that is in its early stages of the box office. This model …

Flood Risk Prediction In Southern Louisiana Using Support Vector Machines, Claire Dorsett Apr 2022

Flood Risk Prediction In Southern Louisiana Using Support Vector Machines, Claire Dorsett

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

Flooding in Southern Louisiana is a growing concern as violent weather becomes more frequent. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Louisiana soils have become drier and annual rainfall trends have increased, which may lead to more severe flooding in the coming years. In light of this change in weather trends, flood prediction has become increasingly important for the public’s safety. The focus of this paper is to apply the Support Vector Machine (SVM), a machine learning technique, to classify flood risks based on water gage height, wind speed and direction, and time of the year. In this paper, the …

This paper discusses the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) and its applications. The paper gives an introduction to what the CLT is and how it can be applied to real life. Additionally, the paper gives a conceptual understanding of the theorem through various examples and visuals. The paper discusses the applications of the CLT in fields such as computer science, psychology, and political science. The author then suggests a new mathematical theorem as an application of the CLT and provides a proof of the theorem. The new theorem relates to expected value and probabilities of random variables and provides a link …

A Uniform Chevalley Theorem For Direct Summands Of Polynomial Rings In Mixed Characteristic, Alessandro De Stefani, Eloisa Grifo, Jack Jeffries Apr 2022

A Uniform Chevalley Theorem For Direct Summands Of Polynomial Rings In Mixed Characteristic, Alessandro De Stefani, Eloisa Grifo, Jack Jeffries

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We prove an explicit uniform Chevalley theorem for direct summands of graded polynomial rings in mixed characteristic. Our strategy relies on the introduction of a new type of differential powers that does not require the existence of a p-derivation on the direct summand.

Quadratic Neural Network Architecture As Evaluated Relative To Conventional Neural Network Architecture, Reid Taylor Apr 2022

Quadratic Neural Network Architecture As Evaluated Relative To Conventional Neural Network Architecture, Reid Taylor

Senior Theses

Current work in the field of deep learning and neural networks revolves around several variations of the same mathematical model for associative learning. These variations, while significant and exceptionally applicable in the real world, fail to push the limits of modern computational prowess. This research does just that: by leveraging high order tensors in place of 2nd order tensors, quadratic neural networks can be developed and can allow for substantially more complex machine learning models which allow for self-interactions of collected and analyzed data. This research shows the theorization and development of mathematical model necessary for such an idea to …

Application Of The Riemann-Hilbert Method To Soliton Solutions Of A Nonlocal Reverse-Spacetime Sasa-Satsuma Equation And A Higher-Order Reverse-Time Nls-Type Equation, Ahmed Ahmed Mar 2022

Application Of The Riemann-Hilbert Method To Soliton Solutions Of A Nonlocal Reverse-Spacetime Sasa-Satsuma Equation And A Higher-Order Reverse-Time Nls-Type Equation, Ahmed Ahmed

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For many years, the study of integrable systems has been one of the most fascinating branches of mathematics and has been thought to be an interesting area for both mathematicians and physicists alike. Many natural phenomena can be predicted by using integrable systems, particularly by studying their different solutions, as well as analyzing and exploring their properties and structures. They are commonly found in nonlinear optics, plasmas, ocean and water waves, gravitational fields, and fluid dynamics. Typical examples of integrable systems include the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, and the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation. Solitons are intrinsic solutions …

Lefschetz Properties Of Some Codimension Three Artinian Gorenstein Algebras, Nancy Abdallah, Nasrin Altafi, Anthony Iarrobino, Alexandra Seceleanu, Joachim Yaméogo Mar 2022

Lefschetz Properties Of Some Codimension Three Artinian Gorenstein Algebras, Nancy Abdallah, Nasrin Altafi, Anthony Iarrobino, Alexandra Seceleanu, Joachim Yaméogo

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Codimension two Artinian algebras A have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra A having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is greater than the socle degree of …

Existence And Uniqueness Of Minimizers For A Nonlocal Variational Problem, Michael Pieper Mar 2022

Existence And Uniqueness Of Minimizers For A Nonlocal Variational Problem, Michael Pieper

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Nonlocal modeling is a rapidly growing field, with a vast array of applications and connections to questions in pure math. One goal of this work is to present an approachable introduction to the field and an invitation to the reader to explore it more deeply. In particular, we explore connections between nonlocal operators and classical problems in the calculus of variations. Using a well-known approach, known simply as The Direct Method, we establish well-posedness for a class of variational problems involving a nonlocal first-order differential operator. Some simple numerical experiments demonstrate the behavior of these problems for specific choices of …

On The Asymptotic Behavior Of Solutions To A Structure Acoustics Model, Baowei Feng, Yanqiu Guo, Mohammad A. Rammaha Feb 2022

On The Asymptotic Behavior Of Solutions To A Structure Acoustics Model, Baowei Feng, Yanqiu Guo, Mohammad A. Rammaha

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

This article concerns the long term behavior of solutions to a structural acoustic model consisting of a semilinear wave equation defined on a smooth bounded domain Ω ⊂ R3 which is coupled with a Berger plate equation acting on a flat portion of the boundary of . The system is influenced by several competing forces, in particular a source term acting on the wave equation which is allowed to have a supercritical exponent.

Our results build upon those obtained by Becklin and Rammaha [8]. With some re- strictions on the parameters in the system and with careful analysis involving …

Adultery and Fidelity in the Lais of Marie de France

Using both literary and historical analysis, I will examine contrasting depictions of adultery and fidelity within the lais written by 12th-century poet Marie de France. A lai is a type of narrative poem, ranging in length from 118 to 1184 lines. Many of Marie de France’s lais follow the literary trope known as courtly love; however, the reader is encouraged to sympathize with different characters depending on the lai. In some lais, the reader …

Prime Factors: America’S Prioritization Of Literacy Over Numeracy And Its Relationship To Systemic Inequity, Troy Smith Feb 2022

Prime Factors: America’S Prioritization Of Literacy Over Numeracy And Its Relationship To Systemic Inequity, Troy Smith

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

For much of American history, literacy has been prioritized in K-12 education and society, at large, at the expense of numeracy. This lack of numerical emphasis has established innumeracy as an American cultural norm that has resulted in America not producing a sufficient number of numerate citizens, and ranking poorly on mathematical performance in international comparisons. This paper investigates the decisions and circumstances that led to this under prioritization, along with the public and cultural impact of said actions. Toward this end, literature regarding contemporary and historical influences on American mathematics education (e.g., civic, policy, and parental) was reviewed. The …

Inverse Scattering Transform For The Complex Coupled Short-Pulse Equation, Aikaterini Gkogkou, Bao-Feng Feng, A. David Trubatch Feb 2022

Inverse Scattering Transform For The Complex Coupled Short-Pulse Equation, Aikaterini Gkogkou, Bao-Feng Feng, A. David Trubatch

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we develop the Riemann–Hilbert approach to the inverse scattering transform (IST) for the complex coupled short-pulse equation on the line with zero boundary conditions at space infinity, which is a generalization of recent work on the scalar real short-pulse equation (SPE) and complex short-pulse equation (cSPE). As a byproduct of the IST, soliton solutions are also obtained. As is often the case, the zoology of soliton solutions for the coupled system is richer than in the scalar case, and it includes both fundamental solitons (the natural, vector generalization of the scalar case), and fundamental breathers (a superposition …

The Nature Of Numbers: Real Computing, Bradley J. Lucier Jan 2022

The Nature Of Numbers: Real Computing, Bradley J. Lucier

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

While studying the computable real numbers as a professional mathematician, I came to see the computable reals, and not the real numbers as usually presented in undergraduate real analysis classes, as the natural culmination of my evolving understanding of numbers as a schoolchild. This paper attempts to trace and explain that evolution. The first part recounts the nature of numbers as they were presented to us grade-school children. In particular, the introduction of square roots induced a step change in my understanding of numbers. Another incident gave me insight into the brilliance of Alan Turing in his paper introducing both …

An Exponential Formula For Random Variables Generated By Multiple Brownian Motions, Maximilian Lawrence Baroi Jan 2022

An Exponential Formula For Random Variables Generated By Multiple Brownian Motions, Maximilian Lawrence Baroi

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The frozen operator has been used to develop Dyson-series like representations for random variables generated by classical Brownian motion, Lévy processes and fractional Brownian with Hurst index greater than 1/2.The relationship between the conditional expectation of a random variable (or fractional conditional expectation in the case of fractional Brownian motion)and that variable's Dyson-series like representation is the exponential formula. These results had not yet been extended to either fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index less than 1/2, or d-dimensional Brownian motion. The former is still out of reach, but we hope our review of stochastic integration for fractional Brownian motion …
