A Variational Theory For Integral Functionals Involving Finite-Horizon Fractional Gradients, Javier Cueto, Carolin Carolin, Hidde Schönberger Aug 2023

A Variational Theory For Integral Functionals Involving Finite-Horizon Fractional Gradients, Javier Cueto, Carolin Carolin, Hidde Schönberger

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The center of interest in this work are variational problems with integral functionals depending on nonlocal gradients with finite horizon that correspond to truncated versions of the Riesz fractional gradient. We contribute several new aspects to both the existence theory of these problems and the study of their asymptotic behavior. Our overall proof strategy builds on finding suitable translation operators that allow to switch between the three types of gradients: classical, fractional, and nonlocal. These provide useful technical tools for transferring results from one setting to the other. Based on this approach, we show that quasiconvexity, which is the natural …

Efficient And Secure Digital Signature Algorithm (Dsa), Nissa Mehibel, M'Hamed Hamadouche Aug 2023

Efficient And Secure Digital Signature Algorithm (Dsa), Nissa Mehibel, M'Hamed Hamadouche

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

The digital signature is used to ensure the integrity of messages as well as the authentication and non-repudiation of users. Today it has a very important role in information security. Digital signature is used in various fields such as e-commerce and e-voting, health, internet of things (IOT). Many digital signature schemes have been proposed, depending on the computational cost and security level. In this paper, we analyzed a recently proposed digital signature scheme based on the discrete logarithm problem (DLP). Our analysis shows that the scheme is not secure against the repeated random number attack to determine the secret keys …

Stochastic Processes And Multi-Resolution Analysis: A Trigonometric Moment Problem Approach And An Analysis Of The Expenditure Trends For Diabetic Patients, Isaac Nwi-Mozu Aug 2023

Stochastic Processes And Multi-Resolution Analysis: A Trigonometric Moment Problem Approach And An Analysis Of The Expenditure Trends For Diabetic Patients, Isaac Nwi-Mozu

Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

This dissertation is divided into two distinct parts. The main theme of the first part is to study stochastic processes (and related signal processing questions) using tools in wavelet analysis, functional analysis (we use in particular the trigonometric moment problem), the theory of realization of rational functions, and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. A novel form of multiresolution analysis is formulated in the discrete case that is used to study some stochastic processes. Using the trigonometric moment problem, we associate with a vector-valued wide-sense stationary process a multiresolution of a new kind. The notion of realization of rational functions was used …

Probabilistic Modeling Of Social Media Networks, Distinguishing Phylogenetic Networks From Trees, And Fairness In Service Queues, Md Rashidul Hasan Aug 2023

Probabilistic Modeling Of Social Media Networks, Distinguishing Phylogenetic Networks From Trees, And Fairness In Service Queues, Md Rashidul Hasan

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this dissertation, three primary issues are explored. The first subject exposes who-saw-from-whom pathways in post-specific dissemination networks in social media platforms. We describe a network-based approach for temporal, textual, and post-diffusion network inference. The conditional point process method discovers the most probable diffusion network. The tool is capable of meaningful analysis of hundreds of post shares. Inferred diffusion networks demonstrate disparities in information distribution between user groups (confirmed versus unverified, conservative versus liberal) and local communities (political, entrepreneurial, etc.). A promising approach for quantifying post-impact, we observe discrepancies in inferred networks that indicate the disproportionate amount of automated bots. …

Acceleration Methods For Nonlinear Solvers And Application To Fluid Flow Simulations, Duygu Vargun Aug 2023

Acceleration Methods For Nonlinear Solvers And Application To Fluid Flow Simulations, Duygu Vargun

All Dissertations

This thesis studies nonlinear iterative solvers for the simulation of Newtonian and non- Newtonian fluid models with two different approaches: Anderson acceleration (AA), an extrapolation technique that accelerates the convergence rate and improves the robustness of fixed-point iterations schemes, and continuous data assimilation (CDA) which drives the approximate solution towards coarse data measurements or observables by adding a penalty term.

We analyze the properties of nonlinear solvers to apply the AA technique. We consider the Picard iteration for the Bingham equation which models the motion of viscoplastic materials, and the classical iterated penalty Picard and Arrow-Hurwicz iterations for the incompressible …

Asymptotic Cones Of Quadratically Defined Sets And Their Applications To Qcqps, Alexander Joyce Aug 2023

Asymptotic Cones Of Quadratically Defined Sets And Their Applications To Qcqps, Alexander Joyce

All Dissertations

Quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs) are a set of optimization problems defined by a quadratic objective function and quadratic constraints. QCQPs cover a diverse set of problems, but the nonconvexity and unboundedness of quadratic constraints lead to difficulties in globally solving a QCQP. This thesis covers properties of unbounded quadratic constraints via a description of the asymptotic cone of a set defined by a single quadratic constraint. A description of the asymptotic cone is provided, including properties such as retractiveness and horizon directions.

Using the characterization of the asymptotic cone, we generalize existing results for bounded quadratically defined regions with …

Stability Of Cauchy's Equation On Δ+., Holden Wells Aug 2023

Stability Of Cauchy's Equation On Δ+., Holden Wells

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The most famous functional equation f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y) known as Cauchy's equation due to its appearance in the seminal analysis text Cours d'Analyse (Cauchy 1821), was used to understand fundamental aspects of the real numbers and the importance of regularity assumptions in mathematical analysis. Since then, the equation has been abstracted and examined in many contexts. One such examination, introduced by Stanislaw Ulam and furthered by Donald Hyers, was that of stability. Hyers demonstrated that Cauchy's equation exhibited stability over Banach Spaces in the following sense: functions that approximately satisfy Cauchy's equation are approximated with the same level of error by functions …

Recovering Coefficients Of Second-Order Hyperbolic And Plate Equations Via Finite Measurements On The Boundary, Scott Randall Scruggs Aug 2023

Recovering Coefficients Of Second-Order Hyperbolic And Plate Equations Via Finite Measurements On The Boundary, Scott Randall Scruggs

All Dissertations

Abstract In this dissertation, we consider the inverse problem for a second-order hyperbolic equation of recovering n + 3 unknown coefficients defined on an open bounded domain with a smooth enough boundary. We also consider the inverse problem of recovering an unknown coefficient on the Euler- Bernoulli plate equation on a lower-order term again defined on an open bounded domain with a smooth enough boundary. For the second-order hyperbolic equation, we show that we can uniquely and (Lipschitz) stably recover all these coefficients from only using half of the corresponding boundary measurements of their solutions, and for the plate equation, …

Dna Self-Assembly Of Trapezohedral Graphs, Hytham Abdelkarim Aug 2023

Dna Self-Assembly Of Trapezohedral Graphs, Hytham Abdelkarim

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Self-assembly is the process of a collection of components combining to form an organized structure without external direction. DNA self-assembly uses multi-armed DNA molecules as the component building blocks. It is desirable to minimize the material used and to minimize genetic waste in the assembly process. We will be using graph theory as a tool to find optimal solutions to problems in DNA self-assembly. The goal of this research is to develop a method or algorithm that will produce optimal tile sets which will self-assemble into a target DNA complex. We will minimize the number of tile and bond-edge types …

Analysis Of Syndrome-Based Iterative Decoder Failure Of Qldpc Codes, Kirsten D. Morris, Tefjol Pllaha, Christine A. Kelley Jul 2023

Analysis Of Syndrome-Based Iterative Decoder Failure Of Qldpc Codes, Kirsten D. Morris, Tefjol Pllaha, Christine A. Kelley

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Iterative decoder failures of quantum low density parity check (QLDPC) codes are attributed to substructures in the code’s graph, known as trapping sets, as well as degenerate errors that can arise in quantum codes. Failure inducing sets are subsets of codeword coordinates that, when initially in error, lead to decoding failure in a trapping set. In this paper we examine the failure inducing sets of QLDPC codes under syndrome-based iterative decoding, and their connection to absorbing sets in classical LDPC codes.

Sentiment Analysis Before And During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Emily Musgrove

Mathematics Summer Fellows

This study examines the change in connotative language use before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. By analyzing news articles from several major US newspapers, we found that there is a statistically significant correlation between the sentiment of the text and the publication period. Specifically, we document a large, systematic, and statistically significant decline in the overall sentiment of articles published in major news outlets. While our results do not directly gauge the sentiment of the population, our findings have important implications regarding the social responsibility of journalists and media outlets especially in times of crisis.

Computation Of The Basic Reproduction Numbers For Reaction-Diffusion Epidemic Models, Chayu Yang, Jin Wang Jul 2023

Computation Of The Basic Reproduction Numbers For Reaction-Diffusion Epidemic Models, Chayu Yang, Jin Wang

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We consider a class of k-dimensional reaction-diusion epidemic models (k = 1; 2; • • • ) that are developed from autonomous ODE systems. We present a computational approach for the calculation and analysis of their basic reproduction numbers. Particularly, we apply matrix theory to study the relationship between the basic reproduction numbers of the PDE models and those of their underlying ODE models. We show that the basic reproduction numbers are the same for these PDE models and their associated ODE models in several important scenarios. We additionally provide two numerical examples to verify our analytical results.

On Solutions Of First Order Pde With Two-Dimensional Dirac Delta Forcing Terms, Ian Robinson Jul 2023

On Solutions Of First Order Pde With Two-Dimensional Dirac Delta Forcing Terms, Ian Robinson

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We provide solutions of a first order, linear partial differential equation of two variables where the nonhomogeneous term is a two-dimensional Dirac delta function. Our results are achieved by applying the unilateral Laplace Transform, solving the subsequently transformed PDE, and reverting back to the original space-time domain. A discussion of existence and uniqueness of solutions, a derivation of solutions of the PDE coupled with a boundary and initial condition, as well as a few worked examples are provided.

Pull-Push Method: A New Approach To Edge-Isoperimetric Problems, Sergei L. Bezrukov, Nikola Kuzmanovski, Jounglag Lim Jul 2023

Pull-Push Method: A New Approach To Edge-Isoperimetric Problems, Sergei L. Bezrukov, Nikola Kuzmanovski, Jounglag Lim

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We prove a generalization of the Ahlswede-Cai local-global principle. A new technique to handle edge-isoperimetric problems is introduced which we call the pull-push method. Our main result includes all previously published results in this area as special cases with the only exception of the edge-isoperimetric problem for grids. With this we partially answer a question of Harper on local-global principles. We also describe a strategy for further generalization of our results so that the case of grids would be covered, which would completely settle Harper’s question.

When Are The Natural Embeddings Of Classical Invariant Rings Pure?, Melvin Hochster, Jack Jeffries, Vaibhav Pandey, Anurag K. Singh

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Consider a reductive linear algebraic group G acting linearly on a polynomial ring S over an infinite field; key examples are the general linear group, the symplectic group, the orthogonal group, and the special linear group, with the classical representations as inWeyl’s book: For the general linear group, consider a direct sum of copies of the standard representation and copies of the dual; in the other cases, take copies of the standard representation. The invariant rings in the respective cases are determinantal rings, rings defined by Pfaffians of alternating matrices, symmetric determinantal rings and the Plücker coordinate rings of Grassmannians; …

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Band-pass filters functioning in the near-infrared (IR) range are desired for laser technology, multi-photon fluorescence, and IR imaging applications. In this study, we have designed four band-pass filters in the near Infrared spectrum (900-1200 nm) by vertically stacking different high and low-index materials. The band-pass filters are modelled by Essential Macleod software with different thicknesses. The layer’s thicknesses were optimized in such a way to provide the negligible reflectance and maximum transmission on the front side. All the simulated band-pass filters exhibit high transmittance, but TiO2/Al2O3 and Ta2O5/Al2O3 outperforms other modelled structure in terms of performance due to the better …

Modified Geometries, Clifford Algebras And Graphs: Their Impact On Discreteness, Locality And Symmetr, Roman Sverdlov Jul 2023

Modified Geometries, Clifford Algebras And Graphs: Their Impact On Discreteness, Locality And Symmetr, Roman Sverdlov

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this dissertation I will explore the question whether various entities commonly used in quantum field theory can be “constructed". In particular, can spacetime be “constructed" out of building blocks, and can Berezin integral be “constructed" in terms of Riemann integrals.

As far as “constructing" spacetime out of building blocks, it has been attempted by multiple scientific communities and various models were proposed. But the common downfall is they break the principles of relativity. I will explore the ways of doing so in such a way that principles of relativity are respected. One of my approaches is to replace points …

Waste Treatment Facility Location For Hotel Chains, Dolores R. Santos-Peñate, Rafael R. Suárez-Vega, Carmen Florido De La Nuez Jun 2023

Waste Treatment Facility Location For Hotel Chains, Dolores R. Santos-Peñate, Rafael R. Suárez-Vega, Carmen Florido De La Nuez

ITSA 2022 Gran Canaria - 9th Biennial Conference: Corporate Entrepreneurship and Global Tourism Strategies After Covid 19

Tourism generates huge amounts of waste. About half of the waste generated by hotels is food and garden bio-waste. This bio-waste can be used to make compost and pellets. In turn, pellets can be used as an absorbent material in composters and as an energy source. We consider the problem of locating composting and pellet-making facilities so that the bio-waste generated by a chain of hotels can be managed at or close to the generation points. An optimization model is applied to locate the facilities and allocate the waste and products, and several scenarios are analysed. The study shows that, …

Periodic, Nonperiodic, And Chaotic Solutions For A Class Of Difference Equations With Negative Feedback, Benjamin B. Kennedy Jun 2023

Periodic, Nonperiodic, And Chaotic Solutions For A Class Of Difference Equations With Negative Feedback, Benjamin B. Kennedy

Math Faculty Publications

We study the scalar difference equation x(k + 1) = x(k) + (f(x(k - N))) / N,

where f is nonincreasing with negative feedback. This equation is a discretization of the well-studied differential delay equation x'(t) = f(x(t - 1)).

We examine explicit families of such equations for which we can find, for infinitely many values of N and appropriate parameter values, various dynamical behaviors including periodic solutions with large numbers of sign changes per minimal period, solutions that do not converge to periodic solutions, and chaos. We contrast these behaviors with the dynamics of the limiting differential equation. Our …

(R1997) Distance Measures Of Complex Fermatean Fuzzy Number And Their Application To Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Problem, V. Chinnadurai, S. Thayalan, A. Bobin

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) is the most widely used decision-making method to solve many complex problems. However, classical MCDM approaches tend to make decisions when the parameters are imprecise or uncertain. The concept of a complex fuzzy set is new in the field of fuzzy set theory. It is a set that can collect and interpret the membership grades from the unit circle in a plane instead of the interval [0,1]. CFS cannot deal with membership and non-membership grades, while complex intuitionistic fuzzy set and complex Pythagorean fuzzy set works only for a limited range of values. The concept of a …

On Colorings And Orientations Of Signed Graphs, Daniel Slilaty

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A classical theorem independently due to Gallai and Roy states that a graph G has a proper k-coloring if and only if G has an orientation without coherent paths of length k. An analogue of this result for signed graphs is proved in this article.

Analyzing Tortuosity In Patterns Formed By Colonies Of Embryonic Stem Cells Using Topological Data Analysis, Jackie Driscoll Jun 2023

Analyzing Tortuosity In Patterns Formed By Colonies Of Embryonic Stem Cells Using Topological Data Analysis, Jackie Driscoll

Master's Theses

Pluripotent stem cells have been observed to segregate into Turing-like patterns during the early stages of Dox-inducible hiPSC differentiation. In this thesis, we de- velop a tool to quantify the tortuosity in the patterns formed by colonies of pluripo- tent stem cells using methods from topological data analysis. We use clustering techniques and the mapper algorithm to create simplicial complexes representing samples of cells and detail a method of evaluating the tortuosity of these complexes. We use the resulting persistence landscapes and their associated norms to evaluate experimental data and simulated data from an agent based model. This thesis finds …

Solving The Cable Equation, A Second-Order Time Dependent Pde For Non-Ideal Cables With Action Potentials In The Mammalian Brain Using Kss Methods, Nirmohi Charbe

Master's Theses

In this thesis we shall perform the comparisons of a Krylov Subspace Spectral method with Forward Euler, Backward Euler and Crank-Nicolson to solve the Cable Equation. The Cable Equation measures action potentials in axons in a mammalian brain treated as an ideal cable in the first part of the study. We shall subject this problem to the further assumption of a non-ideal cable. Assume a non-uniform cross section area along the longitudinal axis. At the present time, the effects of torsion, curvature and material capacitance are ignored. There is particular interest to generalize the application of the PDEs including and …

(R2028) A Brief Note On Space Time Fractional Order Thermoelastic Response In A Layer, Navneet Lamba, Jyoti Verma, Kishor Deshmukh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this study, a one-dimensional layer of a solid is used to investigate the exact analytical solution of the heat conduction equation with space-time fractional order derivatives and to analyze its associated thermoelastic response using a quasi-static approach. The assumed thermoelastic problem was subjected to certain initial and boundary conditions at the initial and final ends of the layer. The memory effects and long-range interaction were discussed with the help of the Caputo-type fractional-order derivative and finite Riesz fractional derivative. Laplace transform and Fourier transform techniques for spatial coordinates were used to investigate the solution of the temperature distribution and …

Bright Light Therapy And Depression: Assessing Suitability Using Entrainment Maps, Charles A. Mainwaring May 2023

Bright Light Therapy And Depression: Assessing Suitability Using Entrainment Maps, Charles A. Mainwaring

Theses

Bright Light Therapy has been shown to be efficacious to mood disorders including Major Depression. Researchers use the Jewett-Forger-Kronauer model of the circadian rhythm with the Unified Model of melatonin including a mathematical term implementing feedback from the melatonin system into the circadian system to quantify the effects of bright light. Early investigations into intrinsic period, light sensitivity, and the circadian pacemaker's sensitivity to blood melatonin concentration may be indicators of subsets of patients with long intrinsic periods exhibiting symptoms of depression.
