Reconstructing Subsets Of Reals, A. J. Radcliffe, A. D. Scott Jan 1999

Reconstructing Subsets Of Reals, A. J. Radcliffe, A. D. Scott

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We consider the problem of reconstructing a set of real numbers up to translation from the multiset of its subsets of fixed size, given up to translation. This is impossible in general: for instance almost all subsets of Z contain infinitely many translates of every finite subset of Z. We therefore restrict our attention to subsets of R which are locally finite; those which contain only finitely many translates of any given finite set of size at least 2. We prove that every locally finite subset of R is reconstructible from the multiset of its 3-subsets, given up to …

Algebraic Geometric Codes Over Rings, Judy L. Walker Jan 1999

Algebraic Geometric Codes Over Rings, Judy L. Walker

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The techniques of algebraic geometry have been widely and successfully applied to the study of linear codes over finite fields since the early 1980’s. Recently, there has been an increased interest in the study of linear codes over finite rings. In this paper, we combine these two approaches to coding theory by introducing the study of algebraic geometric codes over rings. In addition to defining these new codes, we prove several results about their properties.

On The Decomposition Of Order-Separable Posets Of Countable Width Into Chains, Gary Gruenhage, Joe Mashburn Jan 1999

On The Decomposition Of Order-Separable Posets Of Countable Width Into Chains, Gary Gruenhage, Joe Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

partially ordered set X has countable width if and only if every collection of pairwise incomparable elements of X is countable. It is order-separable if and only if there is a countable subset D of X such that whenever p, q ∈ X and p < q, there is r ∈ D such that p ≤ r ≤ q. Can every order-separable poset of countable width be written as the union of a countable number of chains? We show that the answer to this question is "no" if there is a 2-entangled subset of IR, and "yes" under the Open Coloring Axiom.

A Unified Approach To Difference Sets With Gcd(V, N) > 1, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab Jan 1999

A Unified Approach To Difference Sets With Gcd(V, N) > 1, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

The five known families of difference sets whose parameters (v, k, λ; n) satisfy the condition gcd(v,n) > 1 are the McFarland, Spence, Davis-Jedwab, Hadamard and Chen families. We survey recent work which uses recursive techniques to unify these difference set families, placing particular emphasis on examples. This unified approach has also proved useful for studying semi-regular relative difference sets and for constructing new symmetric designs.

A Structural Result Of Irreducible Inclusions Of Type Iii Lambda Factors, Lambda Is An Element Of (0,1), Phan Loi Sep 1998

A Structural Result Of Irreducible Inclusions Of Type Iii Lambda Factors, Lambda Is An Element Of (0,1), Phan Loi

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Given an irreducible inclusion of factors with finite index NM, where M is of type IIIλ1/m, N of type IIIλ1/n, 0 < λ < 1, and m,n are relatively prime positive integers, we will prove that if NM satisfies a commuting square condition, then its structure can be characterized by using fixed point algebras and crossed products of automorphisms acting on the middle inclusion of factors associated with NM. Relations between NM and a certain G-kernel on subfactors are also discussed.

A Generalization Of Cayley Graphs For Finite Fields, Dawn M. Jones Aug 1998

A Generalization Of Cayley Graphs For Finite Fields, Dawn M. Jones

Dissertations

A central question in the area of topological graph theory is to find the genus of a given graph. In particular, the genus parameter has been studied for Cayley graphs. A Cayley graph is a representation of a group and a fixed generating set for that group. A group is said to be planar if there is a generating set which produces a planar Cayley graph. We say that a group is toroidal if there is a generating set that produces a toroidal Cayley graph and if there are no generating sets which produce a planar Cayley graph. Characterizations for …

Maximally Disjoint Solutions Of The Set Covering Problem, David J. Rader, Peter L. Hammer Jul 1998

Maximally Disjoint Solutions Of The Set Covering Problem, David J. Rader, Peter L. Hammer

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

This paper is concerned with finding two solutions of a set covering problem that have a minimum number of variables in common. We show that this problem is NP complete, even in the case where we are only interested in completely disjoint solutions. We describe three heuristic methods based on the standard greedy algorithm for set covering problems. Two of these algorithms find the solutions sequentially, while the third finds them simultaneously. A local search method for reducing the overlap of the two given solutions is then described. This method involves the solution of a reduced set covering problem. Finally, …

Evolution Of Mixed-State Regions In Type-Ii Superconductors, Chaocheng Huang, Tom Svobodny Jul 1998

Evolution Of Mixed-State Regions In Type-Ii Superconductors, Chaocheng Huang, Tom Svobodny

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A mean-field model for dynamics of superconducting vortices is studied. The model, consisting of an elliptic equation coupled with a hyperbolic equation with discontinuous initial data, is formulated as a system of nonlocal integrodifferential equations. We show that there exists a unique classical solution in C1+α0) for all t > Ω, where Ω0 is the initial vortex region that is assumed to be in C1+α. Consequently, for any time t, the vortex region Ωt is of C1+α, and the vorticity is in Cαt).

The Set Of Hemispheres Containing A Closed Curve On The Sphere, Mary Kate Boggiano, Mark Desantis Feb 1998

The Set Of Hemispheres Containing A Closed Curve On The Sphere, Mary Kate Boggiano, Mark Desantis

Department of Math & Statistics Technical Report Series

Suppose you get in your car and take a drive on the sphere of radius R, so that when you return to your starting point the odometer indicates you've traveled less than 2πR. Does your path, γ, have to lie in some hemisphere?

This question was presented to us by Dr. Robert Foote of Wabash College. Previous authors chose two points, A and B, on γ such that these points divided γ into two arcs of equal length. Then they took the midpoint of the great circle arc joining A and B to be the North Pole and showed that …

Error-Correcting Codes Associated With Generalized Hadamard Matrices Over Groups, Iem H. Heng Jan 1998

Error-Correcting Codes Associated With Generalized Hadamard Matrices Over Groups, Iem H. Heng

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Classical Hadamard matrices are orthogonal matrices whose elements are ±1. It is well-known that error correcting codes having large minimum distance between codewords can be associated with these Hadamard matrices. Indeed, the success of early Mars deep-space probes was strongly dependent upon this communication technology.

The concept of Hadamard matrices with elements drawn from an Abelian group is a natural generalization of the concept. For the case in which the dimension of the matrix is q and the group consists of the p-th roots of unity, these generalized Hadamard matrices are called “Butson Hadamard Matrices BH(p, q)”, …

On Circulant Weighing Matrices, K. T. Arasu, Jennifer Seberry

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Algebraic techniques are employed to obtain necessary conditions for the existence of certain circulant weighing matrices. As an application we rule out the existence of many circulant weighing matrices. We study orders n = 82 +8+1, for 10 ~ 8 ~ 25. These orders correspond to the number of points in a projective plane of order 8.

Lee Weights Of Z/4z-Codes From Elliptic Curves, José Felipe Voloch, Judy L. Walker Jan 1998

Lee Weights Of Z/4z-Codes From Elliptic Curves, José Felipe Voloch, Judy L. Walker

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

In [15: J. L. Walker, Algebraic geometric codes over rings], the second author defined algebraic geometric codes over rings. This definition was motivated by two recent trends in coding theory: the study of algebraic geometric codes over finite fields, and the study of codes over rings. In that paper, many of the basic parameters of these new codes were computed. However, the Lee weight, which is very important for codes over the ring Z/4Z, was not considered. In [14: J.-F. Voloch and J. L. Walker, Euclidean weights of codes from elliptic curves over rings], this …

On C^1 Robust Singular Transitive Sets For Three-Dimensional Flows, Carlos Arnoldo Morales, Maria José Pacífico, Enrique Ramiro Pujals

Publications and Research

Abstract:

The main goal of this paper is to study robust invariant transitive sets containing singularities for C1 flows on three-dimensional compact boundaryless manifolds:they are partially hyperbolic with volume expanding central direction. Moreover, they are either attractors or repellers. Robust here means that this property cannot be destroyed by small C1-perturbations of the flow.

On Multiple Solutions Of A Nonlinear Dirichlet Problem, Alfonso Castro, Jorge Cossio, John M. Neuberger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We prove that a semilinear elliptic boundary value problem has five solutions when the range of the derivative of the nonlinearity includes at least the first two eigenvalues. We also prove that if the region is a ball the semilinear elliptic problem has two solutions that change sign and are nonradial.

On The Product Of Two Generalized Derivations, Mohamed Barraa, Steen Pedersen Sep 1997

On The Product Of Two Generalized Derivations, Mohamed Barraa, Steen Pedersen

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Two elements A and B in a ring R determine a generalized derivation deltaA,B on R by setting δA,B(X) = AX - XA for any X in R. We characterize when the product δC,DδA,B is a generalized derivation in the cases when the ring R is the algebra of all bounded operators on a Banach space epsilon, and when R is a C*-algebra U. We use the se characterizations to compute the commutant of the range of δA,B.

Invariant Subspaces And Hyper-Reflexivity For Free Semigroup Algebras, Kenneth R. Davidson, David R. Pitts Aug 1997

Invariant Subspaces And Hyper-Reflexivity For Free Semigroup Algebras, Kenneth R. Davidson, David R. Pitts

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we obtain a complete description of the invariant subspace structure of an interesting new class of algebras which we call free semigroup algebras. This enables us to prove that they are reflexive, and moreover to obtain a quantitative measure of the distance to these algebras in terms of the invariant subspaces. Such algebras are called hyper-reflexive. This property is very strong, but it has been established in only a very few cases. Moreover the prototypes of this class of algebras are the natural candidate for a non-commutative analytic Toeplitz algebra on n variables. The case we make …

Hypersurfaces In R-D And The Variance Of Exit Times For Brownian Motion, Kimberly Kinateder, Patrick Mcdonald

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Using the first exit time for Brownian motion from a smoothly bounded domain in Euclidean space, we define two natural functionals on the space of embedded, compact, oriented, unparametrized hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. We develop explicit formulas for the first variation of each of the functionals and characterize the critical points.

Quasi-Steady Monopole And Tripole Attractors In Relaxing Vortices, Louis F. Rossi, Joseph F. Lingevitch, Andrew J. Bernoff Aug 1997

Quasi-Steady Monopole And Tripole Attractors In Relaxing Vortices, Louis F. Rossi, Joseph F. Lingevitch, Andrew J. Bernoff

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Using fully nonlinear simulations of the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations at large Reynolds number (Re), we bracket a threshold amplitude above which a perturbed Gaussian monopole will relax to a quasi-steady, rotating tripole, and below which will relax to an axisymmetric monopole. The resulting quasi-steady structures are robust to small perturbations. We propose a means of measuring the decay rate of disturbances to asymptotic vortical structures wherein streamlines and lines of constant vorticity correspond in some rotating or translating frame. These experiments support the hypothesis that small or moderate deviations from asymptotic structures decay through inviscid and viscous mixing.

Solomon's Sea And The Biblical Π, Andrew Simoson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

From I Kings 7:23, the apparent diameter and circumference of a circular ring are given as 10 and 30 cubits which suggests that the Biblical value of π is 3 rather a number closer to π. However we recount seven different somewhat whimsical explanations as to why this conclusion is overly-hasty.

Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch May 1997

Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

The philosophy of mathematics has provided insight on questions of foundations and mathematical truth; however, it has not been very fruitful in guiding the practice of mathematics. This paper attempts to find points of contact between a Christian worldview and the choice of mathematical projects and methods. Three areas are considered: (i) dubitability in current research, (ii) the intrinsic value of contemporary mathematics to contemporary society, and (iii) the affirmation of human value in the use of mathematics. Finally, a framework for valuing mathematics is proposed as an encouragement to think more deeply about how a Christian might choose a …

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Calculus Students Working Collaboratively In An Interactive Software Environment, Angela Hare May 1997

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Calculus Students Working Collaboratively In An Interactive Software Environment, Angela Hare

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

Recent work in the area of cognitive research in mathematics education focuses on detailed examinations of the learning process of students and how this process is affected by current innovations in the classroom, including collaborative learning and the use of computers and interactive software. Much of this work is supported by the learning framework of constructivism, a school of thought which is based on the work and writings of Jean Piaget. Piaget, a French psychologist in the mid-twentieth century, observed the learning behavior of children and concluded that individuals construct their own knowledge by creating mental structures which explain their …

Mathematics At Chartres Cathedral, Richard Stout

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

Having had several opportunities to travel to France, often with groups of students, our trips have usually included a visit to Chartres, especially to visit the magnificent Gothic cathedral that dominates the town. On a recent visit I was again struck by the beauty, majesty and awe that the cathedral inspires. The building not only does a remarkable job of telling Biblical stories and of enclosing a space conducive to worship, it directs one's eyes and one's spirits upward. This is achieved not only by the beautiful stained glass windows and the striking sculptures, but also by the overall design …
