Charactarizations Of Linear Suboptimality For Mathematical Programs With Equilibrium Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich Jul 2006

Charactarizations Of Linear Suboptimality For Mathematical Programs With Equilibrium Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper is devoted to the study of a new notion of linear suboptimality in constrained mathematical programming. This concept is different from conventional notions of solutions to optimization-related problems, while seems to be natural and significant from the viewpoint of modern variational analysis and applications. In contrast to standard notions, it admits complete characterizations via appropriate constructions of generalized differentiation in nonconvex settings. In this paper we mainly focus on various classes of mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPECs), whose principal role has been well recognized in optimization theory and its applications. Based on robust generalized differential calculus, we …

Methods Of Variational Analysis In Multiobjective Optimization, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper concerns new applications of advanced methods of variational analysis and generalized differentiation to constrained problems of multiobjective/vector optimization. We pay the main attention to general notions of optimal solutions for multiobjective problems that are induced by geometric concepts. of extremality in variational analysis while covering various notions of Pareto and other type of optimality/efficiency conventional in multiobjective optimization. Based on the extremal principles in variational analysis and on appropriate tools of generalized differentiation with well-developed calculus rules, we derive necessary optimality conditions for broad classes of constrained multiobjective problems in the framework of infinite-dimensional spaces. Applications of variational …

Variational Analysis In Nonsmooth Optimization And Discrete Optimal Control, Boris S. Mordukhovich May 2006

Variational Analysis In Nonsmooth Optimization And Discrete Optimal Control, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper is devoted to applications of modern methods of variational· analysis to constrained optimization and control problems generally formulated in infinite-dimensional spaces. The main attention is paid to the study of problems with nonsmooth structures, which require the usage of advanced tools of generalized differentiation. In this way we derive new necessary optimality conditions in optimization problems with functional and. operator constraints and then apply them to optimal control problems governed by discrete-time inclusions in infinite dimensions. The principal difference between finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional frameworks of optimization and control consists of the "lack of compactness" in infinite dimensions, which …

Variational Analysis Of Evolution Inclusions, Boris S. Mordukhovich Apr 2006

Variational Analysis Of Evolution Inclusions, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper is devoted to optimization problems of the Bolza and Mayer types for evolution systems governed by nonconvex Lipschitzian differential inclusions in Banach spaces under endpoint constraints described by finitely many equalities and inequalities. with generally nonsmooth functions. We develop a variational analysis of such roblems mainly based on their discrete approximations and the usage of advanced tools of generalized differentiation satisfying comprehensive calculus rules in the framework of Asplund (and hence any reflexive Banach) spaces. In this way we establish extended results on stability of discrete approximations (with the strong W^1,2-convergence of optimal solutions under consistent perturbations of …

Wavelet Deconvolution In A Periodic Setting Using Cross-Validation, Leming Qu, Partha S. Routh, Kyungduk Ko Apr 2006

Wavelet Deconvolution In A Periodic Setting Using Cross-Validation, Leming Qu, Partha S. Routh, Kyungduk Ko

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The wavelet deconvolution method WaveD using band-limited wavelets offers both theoretical and computational advantages over traditional compactly supported wavelets. The translation-invariant WaveD with a fast algorithm improves further. The twofold cross-validation method for choosing the threshold parameter and the finest resolution level in WaveD is introduced. The algorithm’s performance is compared with the fixed constant tuning and the default tuning in WaveD.

A Numerical Method For Obtaining An Optimal Temperature Distribution In A Three-Dimensional Triple-Layered Skin Structure Embedded With Multi-Level Blood Vessels, Xingui Tang Apr 2006

A Numerical Method For Obtaining An Optimal Temperature Distribution In A Three-Dimensional Triple-Layered Skin Structure Embedded With Multi-Level Blood Vessels, Xingui Tang

Doctoral Dissertations

The research related to hyperthermia has stimulated a lot of interest in recent years because of its application in cancer treatment. When heating the tumor tissue, the crucial problem is keeping the temperature of the surrounding normal tissue below a certain threshold in order to avoid the damage to the normal tissue. Hence, it is important to obtain the temperature field of the entire region during the treatment. The objective of this dissertation is to develop a numerical method for obtaining an optimal temperature distribution in a 3D triple-layered skin structure embedded with multi-level blood vessels where the surface of …

Optimization And Equilibrium Problems With Equilibrium Constraints In Infinite-Dimensional Spaces, Boris S. Mordukhovich Mar 2006

Optimization And Equilibrium Problems With Equilibrium Constraints In Infinite-Dimensional Spaces, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper is devoted to applications of modern variational f).nalysis to the study of constrained optimization and equilibrium problems in infinite-dimensional spaces. We pay a particular attention to the remarkable classes of optimization and equilibrium problems identified as MPECs (mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints) and EPECs (equilibrium problems with equilibrium constraints) treated from the viewpoint of multiobjective optimization. Their underlying feature is that the major constraints are governed by parametric generalized equations/variational conditions in the sense of Robinson. Such problems are intrinsically nonsmooth and can be handled by using an appropriate machinery of generalized differentiation exhibiting a rich/full calculus. The …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Temperature dependent Hall effect (TDH), low temperature photoluminescence (LTPL), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), optical admittance spectroscopy (OAS), and thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurements have been made on 6H-SiC grown by the physical vapor transport technique without intentional doping. n- and p-type as well semi-insulating samples were studied to explore the compensation mechanism in semi-insulating high purity SiC. Nitrogen and boron were found from TDH and SIMS measurements to be the dominant impurities that must be compensated to produce semi-insulating properties. The electrical activation energy of the semi-insulating sample determined from the dependence of the resistivity …

Optimal Therapy Regimens For Treatment-Resistant Mutations Of Hiv, Weiqing Gu, Helen Moore Jan 2006

Optimal Therapy Regimens For Treatment-Resistant Mutations Of Hiv, Weiqing Gu, Helen Moore

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper, we use control theory to determine optimal treatment regimens for HIV patients, taking into account treatment-resistant mutations of the virus. We perform optimal control analysis on a model developed previously for the dynamics of HIV with strains of various resistance to treatment (Moore and Gu, 2005). This model incorporates three types of resistance to treatments: strains that are not responsive to protease inhibitors, strains not responsive to reverse transcriptase inhibitors, and strains not responsive to either of these treatments. We solve for the optimal treatment regimens analytically and numerically. We find parameter regimes for which optimal dosing …

The Dynamics Of Newton's Method On Cubic Polynomials, Shannon N. Miller Jan 2006

The Dynamics Of Newton's Method On Cubic Polynomials, Shannon N. Miller

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The field of dynamics is itself a huge part of many branches of science, including the motion of the planets and galaxies, changing weather patterns, and the growth and decline of populations. Consider a function f and pick x0 in the domain of f . If we iterate this function around the point x0, then we will have the sequence x0, f (x0), f (f (x0)), f (f (f (x0))), ..., which becomes our dynamical system. We are essentially interested in the end behavior of this system. Do …

Decentralized Convex-Type Equilibrium In Nonconvex Models Of Welfare Economics Via Nonlinear Prices, Boris S. Mordukhovich Jan 2006

Decentralized Convex-Type Equilibrium In Nonconvex Models Of Welfare Economics Via Nonlinear Prices, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper is devoted to applications of modern tools of variational analysis to equilibrium models of welfare economics involving nonconvex economies with infinite-dimensional commodity spaces. The main results relate to generalized/ extended second welfare theorems ensuring an equilibrium price support at Pareto optimal allocations. Based on advanced tools of generalized differentiation, we establish refined results of this type with the novel usage of nonlinear prices at the three types to optimal allocations: weak Pareto, Pareto, and strong Pareto. The usage of nonlinear (vs. standard linear) prices allow us to decentralized price equilibria in fully nonconvex models similarly to linear prices …

Inverse Scattering Transform For The Camassa-Holm Equation, Adrian Constantin, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2006

Inverse Scattering Transform For The Camassa-Holm Equation, Adrian Constantin, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

An Inverse Scattering Method is developed for the Camassa-Holm equation. As an illustration of our approach the solutions corresponding to the reflectionless potentials are constructed in terms of the scattering data. The main difference with respect to the standard Inverse Scattering Transform lies in the fact that we have a weighted spectral problem. We therefore have to develop different asymptotic expansions.

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Semilinear Stochastic Evolution Equations And Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tusheng Zhang, Huaizhong Zhao Jan 2006

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Semilinear Stochastic Evolution Equations And Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tusheng Zhang, Huaizhong Zhao

Articles and Preprints

The main objective of this paper is to characterize the pathwise local structure of solutions of semilinear stochastic evolution equations (see’s) and stochastic partial differential equations (spde’s) near stationary solutions. Such characterization is realized through the long-term behavior of the solution field near stationary points. The analysis falls in two parts 1, 2.

In Part 1, we prove general existence and compactness theorems for Ck-cocycles of semilinear see’s and spde’s. Our results cover a large class of semilinear see’s as well as certain semilinear spde’s with Lipschitz and non-Lipschitz terms such as stochastic reaction diffusion equations and the …

An Euler-Type Formula For Ζ(2k +1), Tian-Xiao He, Michael Dancs Jan 2006

An Euler-Type Formula For Ζ(2k +1), Tian-Xiao He, Michael Dancs

Scholarship

In this short paper, we give several new formulas for ζ(n) when n is an odd positive integer. The method is based on a recent proof, due to H. Tsumura, of Euler’s classical result for even n. Our results illuminate the similarities between the even and odd cases, and may give some insight into why the odd case is much more difficult.

Numerical Approximation To Ζ(2n+1), Tian-Xiao He, Michael Dancs

Scholarship

In this short paper, we establish a family of rapidly converging series expansions ζ(2n +1) by discretizing an integral representation given by Cvijovic and Klinowski [3] in Integral representations of the Riemann zeta function for odd-integer arguments, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 142 (2002) 435–439. The proofs are elementary, using basic properties of the Bernoulli polynomials.

Multivariate Expansion Associated With Sheffer-Type Polynomials And Operators, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue

Scholarship

With the aid of multivariate Sheffer-type polynomials and differential operators, this paper provides two kinds of general expansion formulas, called respectively the first expansion formula and the second expansion formula, that yield a constructive solution to the problem of the expansion of A(ˆt)f([g(t)) (a composition of any given formal power series) and the expansion of the multivariate entire functions in terms of multivariate Sheffer-type polynomials, which may be considered an application of the first expansion formula and the Sheffer-type operators. The results are applicable to combinatorics and special function theory.

On The Convergence Of The Summation Formulas Constructed By Using A Symbolic Operator Approach, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue Jan 2006

On The Convergence Of The Summation Formulas Constructed By Using A Symbolic Operator Approach, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue

Scholarship

This paper deals with the convergence of the summation of power series of the form Σa ≤ k ≤ bf(k)xk, where 0 ≤ a ≤ b < ∞, and {f(k)} is a given sequence of numbers with k ∈ [a, b) or f(t) a differentiable function defined on [a, b). Here, the summation is found by using the symbolic operator approach shown in [1]. We will give a different type of the remainder of the summation formulas. The convergence of the corresponding power series will be determined consequently. Several examples such as the generalized Euler's transformation series will also be given. In addition, we will compare the convergence of the given series transforms.

The Convergence Of V-Cycle Multigrid Algorithms For Axisymmetric Laplace And Maxwell Equations, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak Jan 2006

The Convergence Of V-Cycle Multigrid Algorithms For Axisymmetric Laplace And Maxwell Equations, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate some simple finite element discretizations for the axisymmetric Laplace equation and the azimuthal component of the axisymmetric Maxwell equations as well as multigrid algorithms for these discretizations. Our analysis is targeted at simple model problems and our main result is that the standard V-cycle with point smoothing converges at a rate independent of the number of unknowns. This is contrary to suggestions in the existing literature that line relaxations and semicoarsening are needed in multigrid algorithms to overcome difficulties caused by the singularities in the axisymmetric Maxwell problems. Our multigrid analysis proceeds by applying the well known regularity …

Algebraic Characterizations Of Graph Imbeddability In Surfaces And Pseudosurfaces, Lowell Abrams, Dan Slilaty Jan 2006

Algebraic Characterizations Of Graph Imbeddability In Surfaces And Pseudosurfaces, Lowell Abrams, Dan Slilaty

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Given a finite connected graph G and specifications for a closed, connected pseudosurface, we characterize when G can be imbedded in a closed, connected pseudosurface with the given specifications. The specifications for the pseudosurface are: the number of face-connected components, the number of pinches, the number of crosscaps and handles, and the dimension of the first Z2-homology group. The characterizations are formulated in terms of the existence of a dual graph G ∗ on the same set of edges as G which satisfies algebraic conditions inspired by homology groups and their intersection products.

On Adaptive Testing In Orthogonal Saturated Designs, Daniel T. Voss, Weizhen Wang Jan 2006

On Adaptive Testing In Orthogonal Saturated Designs, Daniel T. Voss, Weizhen Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Adaptive, size-a step-down tests are provided for the analysis of orthogonal saturated designs. The tests work effectively under effect sparsity, and include as special cases the individual nonadaptive tests of Berk and Picard (1991) and the simultaneous nonadaptive tests of Voss (1988). The approach is similar to that used by Wang and Voss (2003) to construct adaptive confidence intervals, but testing is simpler because one can use the same denominator for all statistics. Step-down tests also have a clear power advantage over simultaneous confidence intervals and analogous single-step tests, as is demonstrated theoretically and assessed via simulation.

Some Neutrosophic Algebraic Structures And Neutrosophic N-Algebraic Structures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book, for the first time we introduce the notion of neutrosophic algebraic structures for groups, loops, semigroups and groupoids and also their neutrosophic N-algebraic structures. One is fully aware of the fact that many classical theorems like Lagrange, Sylow and Cauchy have been studied only in the context of finite groups. Here we try to shift the paradigm by studying and introducing these theorems to neutrosophic semigroups, neutrosophic groupoids, and neutrosophic loops. We have intentionally not given several theorems for semigroups and groupoid but have given several results with proof mainly in the case of neutrosophic loops, biloops …
