Each lesson implements Geometer's Sketchpad to create an engaging student-centered learning environment.

A Vision For Acms, James Bradley May 2009

A Vision For Acms, James Bradley

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2009

This paper applies McGrath's and Heller's approach to the consideration of mathematics. It assumes that mathematics is not self-interpreting, but that, looked at from a framework informed by the Christian scriptures, it can be seen as having significant meaning and value and a transcendent purpose. In particular, it presents a classical interpretation of mathematics broadly conceived, presents two approaches to providing warrant for such an interpretation, and explores some implications. It argues, by means of the example of the classical interpretation, that the relationship between mathematics and theology is a viable area of scholarly inquiry encompassing profound and fascinating questions. …

Arithmetic Sequences, Diophantine Equations And The Number Of The Beast, Bryan Dawson May 2009

Arithmetic Sequences, Diophantine Equations And The Number Of The Beast, Bryan Dawson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2009

Revelation 13:18 invites anyone with "understanding" to "calculate the number of the beast". This session reviews historical attempts using arithmetic sequences and gives conditions by which a name is "beastable" by those methods. Do these approaches make it reasonable to identify the beast based on such calculation alone?

The Heavens And The Scriptures In The Eyes Of Johannes Kepler, Dale L. Mcintyre May 2009

The Heavens And The Scriptures In The Eyes Of Johannes Kepler, Dale L. Mcintyre

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2009

The heavens declare the glory of God… Ps. 19:1 Acclaimed as one of the most accomplished and influential scientists of his time, the subject of this paper was also a passionate defender of the Christian faith who believed he had been called by God to glorify Him in the study of His Creation. We see a man who was so immersed in both the Scriptures and his exploration of the heavens that his scholarly writings often burst forth with biblical quotations and songs of praise for God the Creator. Though always magnanimous and tolerant of others, he suffered persecution from …

Extending The Support Theorem To Infinite Dimensions, Jeremy J. Becnel May 2009

Extending The Support Theorem To Infinite Dimensions, Jeremy J. Becnel

Faculty Publications

The Radon transform is one of the most useful and applicable tools in functional analysis. First constructed by John Radon in 1917 [9] it has now been adapted to several settings. One of the principle theorems involving the Radon transform is the Support Theorem. In this paper, we discuss how the Radon transform can be constructed in the white noise setting. We also develop a Support Theorem in this setting.

Migration And Mixing Between Populations In Disease Models, David Burger May 2009

Migration And Mixing Between Populations In Disease Models, David Burger

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The goal of this thesis is to model the spread of disease between populations and find ways to prevent its continued epidemic. This thesis studies disease spread as a function of migration in epidemiological models. The models are constructed using the compartmental approach, and we compare discrete and continuous time approximations. In the discrete model, we will look at ways that induced migration can cause an epidemic case to turn into a dieout case. It will be shown that migration can only effect the size of an outbreak, but cannot create or destroy one. For the continuous cases, we will …

Metric Regularity And Lipschitzian Stability Of Parametric Variational Systems, Francisco J. Aragón Artacho, Boris S. Mordukhovich May 2009

Metric Regularity And Lipschitzian Stability Of Parametric Variational Systems, Francisco J. Aragón Artacho, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper concerns the study of variational systems described by parameterized generalized equations/variational conditions important for many aspects of nonlinear analysis, optimization, and their applications. Focusing on the fundamental properties of metric regularity and Lipschitzian stability, we establish various qualitative and quantitative relationships between these properties for multivalued parts/fields of parametric generalized equations and the corresponding solution maps for them in the framework of arbitrary Banach spaces of decision and parameter variables.

Weak Sharp Minima On Riemannian Manifolds, Chong Li, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Jinhua Wang, Jen-Chih Yao Apr 2009

Weak Sharp Minima On Riemannian Manifolds, Chong Li, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Jinhua Wang, Jen-Chih Yao

Mathematics Research Reports

This is the first paper dealing with the study of weak sharp minima for constrained optimization problems on Riemannian manifolds, which are important in many applications. We consider the notions of local weak sharp minima, boundedly weak sharp minima, and global weak sharp minima for such problems and obtain their complete characterizations in the case of convex problems on finite-dimensional Riemannian manifolds and their Hadamard counterparts. A number of the results obtained in this paper are also new for the case of conventional problems in linear spaces. Our methods involve appropriate tools of variational analysis and generalized differentiation on Riemannian …

Communication Across Random Landings, Kerron Joseph, Jay Walbran Mar 2009

Communication Across Random Landings, Kerron Joseph, Jay Walbran

Undergraduate Research Conference

The idea to do this project began with a simple question: Suppose that people carrying communication radios parachute out of a plane, if each device has a certain range, what is the probability that once everyone lands they will be able to communicate. To study this problem I assumed that the spot where each individual lands is normally distributed.

We discuss the different ways the communication radios can work. In particular we examine the situation where all the radios have to be within a certain radius r to operate correctly and the situation where the radios work on a relay …

Wavelet Reconstruction Of Nonuniformly Sampled Signals, Leming Qu, Partha S. Routh, Phil D. Anno Feb 2009

Wavelet Reconstruction Of Nonuniformly Sampled Signals, Leming Qu, Partha S. Routh, Phil D. Anno

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

For the reconstruction of a nonuniformly sampled signal based on its noisy observations, we propose a level dependent l1 penalized wavelet reconstruction method. The LARS/Lasso algorithm is applied to solve the Lasso problem. The data adaptive choice of the regularization parameters is based on the AIC and the degrees of freedom is estimated by the number of nonzero elements in the Lasso solution. Simulation results conducted on some commonly used 1_D test signals illustrate that the proposed method possesses good empirical properties.

A Berry-Esseen Theorem For Sample Quantiles Under Weak Dependence, S. N. Lahiri, Shuxia Sun Feb 2009

A Berry-Esseen Theorem For Sample Quantiles Under Weak Dependence, S. N. Lahiri, Shuxia Sun

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper proves a Berry-Esseen theorem for sample quantiles of strongly-mixing random variables under a polynomial mixing rate. The rate of normal approximation is shown to be O(n-1/2) as n -> infinity, where n denotes the sample size. This result is in sharp contrast to the case of the sample mean of strongly-mixing random variables where the rate O(n-1/2) is not known even under an exponential strong mixing rate. The main result of the paper has applications in finance and econometrics as financial time series important data often are heavy-tailed and quantile …

Second-Order Analysis Of Polyhedral Systems In Finite And Infinite Dimensions With Applications To Robust Stability Of Variational Inequalities, René Henrion, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam Feb 2009

Second-Order Analysis Of Polyhedral Systems In Finite And Infinite Dimensions With Applications To Robust Stability Of Variational Inequalities, René Henrion, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam

Mathematics Research Reports

This paper concerns second-order analysis for a remarkable class of variational systems in finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces, which is particularly important for the study of optimization and equilibrium problems with equilibrium constraints. Systems of this type are described via variational inequalities over polyhedral convex sets and allow us to provide a comprehensive local analysis by using appropriate generalized differentiation of the normal cone mappings for such sets. In this paper we efficiently compute the required coderivatives of the normal cone mappings exclusively via the initial data of polyhedral sets in reflexive Banach spaces. This provides the main tools of second-order …

Wavelet Decompositions For Quantitative Pattern Matching, Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to provide an introduction to the concepts of wavelets and multiwavelets, and explain how these tools can be used by the analyst community to find patterns in quantitative data. Three multiwavelet bases are introduced, the GHM basis from \cite{GHM}, a piecewise polynomial basis with approximation order 4 from \cite{DGH}, and a smoother approximation-order-4 basis developed by the author in previous work \cite{K}. The technique of using multiwavelets to find patterns is illustrated in a traffic-analysis example. Hybrid Approximate Proximal Method With Auxiliary Variational Inequality For Vector Optimization, L C. Ceng, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Jen-Chih Yao Jan 2009

Hybrid Approximate Proximal Method With Auxiliary Variational Inequality For Vector Optimization, L C. Ceng, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Jen-Chih Yao

Mathematics Research Reports

This paper studies the general vector optimization problem of finding weakly efficient points for mappings in a Banach space Y, with respect to the partial order induced by a closed, convex, and pointed cone C C Y with nonempty interior. In order to find a solution of this problem, we introduce an auxiliary variational inequality problem for monotone, Lipschitz-continuous mapping. The approximate proximal method in vector optimization is extended to develop a hybrid approximate proximal method for the general vector optimization problem by the combination of extragradient method for finding a solution to the variational inequality problem and approximate proximal …

Finding Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Dynamic Equations On Time Scale, Olusegun Michael Otunuga Jan 2009

Finding Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Dynamic Equations On Time Scale, Olusegun Michael Otunuga

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis is on the study of dynamic equations on time scale. Most often, the derivatives and anti-derivatives of functions are taken on the domain of real numbers, which cannot be used to solve some models like insect populations that are continuous while in season and then follow a difference scheme with variable step-size. They die out in winter, while the eggs are incubating or dormant; and then they hatch in a new season, giving rise to a non overlapping population. The general idea of my thesis is to find the conditions for having a positive solution of any boundary …

Twin Solutions Of Even Order Boundary Value Problems For Ordinary Differential Equations And Finite Difference Equations, Xun Sun

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Avery-Henderson fixed-point theorem is first applied to obtain the existence of at least two positive solutions for the boundary value problem

(-1)ny(2n) = f(y); n = 1; 2; 3 ... and t 2 [0; 1];

with boundary conditions

y(2k)(0) = 0

y(2k+1)(1) = 0 for k = 0; 1; 2 ... n - 1:

This theorem is subsequently used to obtain the existence of at least two positive solutions for the dynamic boundary value problem

(-1)n (2n)u(k)g(u(k)); n = 1; 2; 3 .... and k (0; ... N);

Comic Books That Teach Mathematics, Bruce Kessler Jan 2009

Comic Books That Teach Mathematics, Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

During the 2008--2009 academic year, the author embarked on an extremely non-standard curriculum path: developing comic books with embedded mathematics appropriate for 3rd through 6th grade students. With the help of an education professor to measure impact, an elementary-school principal, and talented undergraduate illustrators, this project came to fruition and the comics were implemented in elementary classrooms at Cumberland Trace Elementary in the Warren County School System in Bowling Green, Kentucky. This manuscript gives the history of this idea, the difficulties of developing the content of the comics and getting them illustrated, and the implementation plan in the school.
