Short-Term Facilitation May Stabilize Parametric Working Memory Trace, Vladimir Itskov, David Hansel, Misha Tsodyks
Short-Term Facilitation May Stabilize Parametric Working Memory Trace, Vladimir Itskov, David Hansel, Misha Tsodyks
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Networks with continuous set of attractors are considered to be a paradigmatic model for parametric working memory (WM), but require fine tuning of connections and are thus structurally unstable. Here we analyzed the network with ring attractor, where connections are not perfectly tuned and the activity state therefore drifts in the absence of the stabilizing stimulus. We derive an analytical expression for the drift dynamics and conclude that the network cannot function as WM for a period of several seconds, a typical delay time in monkey memory experiments. We propose that short-term synaptic facilitation in recurrent connections significantly improves the …
Extremal Problems For Independent Set Enumeration, Jonathan Cutler, A. J. Radcliffe
Extremal Problems For Independent Set Enumeration, Jonathan Cutler, A. J. Radcliffe
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
The study of the number of independent sets in a graph has a rich history. Recently, Kahn proved that disjoint unions of Kr,r’s have the maximum number of independent sets amongst r-regular bipartite graphs. Zhao extended this to all r-regular graphs. If we instead restrict the class of graphs to those on a fixed number of vertices and edges, then the Kruskal-Katona theorem implies that the graph with the maximum number of independent sets is the lex graph, where edges form an initial segment of the lexicographic ordering. In this paper, we study three related questions. Firstly, we …

An Entropy Proof Of The Kahn-Lovasz Theorem, Jonathan Cutler, A. J. Radcliffe
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Bregman [2], gave a best possible upper bound for the number of perfect matchings in a balanced bipartite graph in terms of its degree sequence. Recently Kahn and Lovasz [8] extended Bregman’s theorem to general graphs. In this paper, we use entropy methods to give a new proof of the Kahn-Lovasz theorem. Our methods build on Radhakrishnan’s [9] use of entropy to prove Bregman’s theorem.
Symmetric Nonconforming Mixed Finite Elements For Linear Elasticity, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Johnny Guzmán
Symmetric Nonconforming Mixed Finite Elements For Linear Elasticity, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Johnny Guzmán
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We present a family of mixed methods for linear elasticity that yield exactly symmetric, but only weakly conforming, stress approximations. The method is presented in both two and three dimensions (on triangular and tetrahedral meshes). The method is efficiently implementable by hybridization. The degrees of freedom of the Lagrange multipliers, which approximate the displacements at the faces, solve a symmetric positive-definite system. The design and analysis of this method is motivated by a new set of unisolvent degrees of freedom for symmetric polynomial matrices. These new degrees of freedom are also used to give a new simple calculation of the …
Modeling, Analysis, And Simulation Of Discrete-Continuum Models Of Step-Flow Epitaxy: Bunching Instabilities And Continuum Limits, Nicholas O. Kirby
Modeling, Analysis, And Simulation Of Discrete-Continuum Models Of Step-Flow Epitaxy: Bunching Instabilities And Continuum Limits, Nicholas O. Kirby
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Vicinal surfaces consist of terraces separated by atomic steps. In the step-flow regime, deposited atoms (adatoms) diffuse on terraces, eventually reaching steps where they attach to the crystal, thereby causing the steps to move. There are two main objectives of this work. First, we analyze rigorously the differences in qualitative behavior between vicinal surfaces consisting of infinitely many steps and nanowires whose top surface consists of a small number of steps bounded by a reflecting wall. Second, we derive the continuum model that describes the macroscopic behavior of vicinal surfaces from detailed microscopic models of step dynamics.
We use the …

Analysis Of The Dpg Method For The Poisson Equation, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We give an error analysis of the recently developed DPG method applied to solve the Poisson equation and a convection-dffusion problem. We prove that the method is quasioptimal. Error estimates in terms of both the mesh size h and the polynomial degree p (for various element shapes) can be derived from our results. Results of extensive numerical experiments are also presented.
A Second Elasticity Element Using The Matrix Bubble, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Johnny Guzmán
A Second Elasticity Element Using The Matrix Bubble, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Johnny Guzmán
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We presented a family of finite elements that use a polynomial space augmented by certain matrix bubbles in Cockburn et al. (2010) A new elasticity element made for enforcing weak stress symmetry. Math. Comput., 79, 1331–1349 . In this sequel we exhibit a second family of elements that use the same matrix bubble. This second element uses a stress space smaller than the first while maintaining the same space for rotations (which are the Lagrange multipliers corresponding to a weak symmetry constraint). The space of displacements is of one degree less than the first method. The analysis, while similar to …

Commuting Smoothed Projectors In Weighted Norms With An Application To Axisymmetric Maxwell Equations, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Minah Oh
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We construct finite element projectors that can be applied to functions with low regularity. These projectors are continuous in a weighted norm arising naturally when modeling devices with axial symmetry. They have important commuting diagram properties needed for finite element analysis. As an application, we use the projectors to prove quasioptimal convergence for the edge finite element approximation of the axisymmetric time-harmonic Maxwell equations on nonsmooth domains. Supplementary numerical investigations on convergence deterioration at high wavenumbers and near Maxwell eigenvalues and are also reported.

In this paper, we analyze a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for numerically solving the Stokes equations. The method uses polynomials of degree $ k$ for all the components of the approximate solution of the gradient-velocity-pressure formulation. The novelty of the analysis is the use of a new projection tailored to the very structure of the numerical traces of the method. It renders the analysis of the projection of the errors very concise and allows us to see that the projection of the error in the velocity superconverges. As a consequence, we prove that the approximations of the velocity gradient, the …

On The (Non)-Integrability Of Kdv Hierarchy With Self-Consistent Sources, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov
Articles
Nonholonomic deformations of integrable equations of the KdV hierarchy are studied by using the expansions over the so-called “squared solutions” (squared eigenfunctions). Such deformations are equivalent to a perturbed model with external (self-consistent) sources. In this regard, the KdV6 equation is viewed as a special perturbation of KdV. Applying expansions over the symplectic basis of squared eigenfunctions, the integrability properties of the KdV6 equation are analysed. This allows for a formulation of conditions on the perturbation terms that preserve its integrability. The perturbation corrections to the scattering data and to the corresponding action-angle (canonical) variables are studied. The analysis shows …

Quantitative Stability And Optimality Conditions In Convex Semi-Infinite And Infinite Programming, M J. Cánovas, M A. Lopez, Boris S. Mordukhovich, J Parra
Mathematics Research Reports
This paper concerns parameterized convex infinite (or semi-infinite) inequality systems whose decision variables run over general infinite-dimensional Banach (resp. finite-dimensional) spaces and that are indexed by an arbitrary fixed set T. Parameter perturbations on the right-hand side of the inequalities are measurable and bounded, and thus the natural parameter space is loo(T). Based on advanced variational analysis, we derive a precise formula for computing the exact Lipschitzian bound of the feasible solution map, which involves only the system data, and then show that this exact bound agrees with the coderivative norm of the aforementioned mapping. On one hand, in this …

Solving A Generalized Heron Problem By Means Of Convex Analysis, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam, Juan Salinas Jr
Mathematics Research Reports
The classical Heron problem states: on a given straight line in the plane, find a point C such that the sum of the distances from C to the given points A and B is minimal. This problem can be solved using standard geometry or differential calculus. In the light of modern convex analysis, we are able to investigate more general versions of this problem. In this paper we propose and solve the following problem: on a given nonempty closed convex subset of IR!, find a point such that the sum of the distances from that point to n given nonempty …

On Some Fractional Integral Operators Involving Generalized Gauss Hypergeometric Functions, N. Virchenko, O. Lisetska, S. L. Kalla
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The object of this paper is to give a generalization of Gauss hypergeometric function, and to investigate its basic properties. Further, we define some fractional integral operators and their inverses in terms of the Mellin transform. Several well known integral operators, including Saigo operators can be derived from the results established here.

Exact Solutions Of The Generalized- Zakharov (Gz) Equation By The Infinite Series Method, N. Taghizadeh, M. Mirzazadeh, F. Farahrooz
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The infinite series method is an efficient method for obtaining exact solutions of some nonlinear partial differential equations. This method can be applied to nonintegrable equations as well as to integrable ones. In this paper, the direct algebraic method is used to construct new exact solutions of generalized- Zakharov equation.

A New Method For Fuzzy Critical Path Analysis In Project Networks With A New Representation Of Triangular Fuzzy Numbers, Amit Kumar, Parmpreet Kaur
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The method for finding fuzzy optimal solution of fully fuzzy critical path (FFCP) problems i.e., critical path problems in which all the parameters are represented by fuzzy numbers, is at best scant; possibly non-existent. In this paper, a method is proposed to find the fuzzy optimal solution of FFCP problems, together with a new representation of triangular fuzzy numbers. This paper will show the advantages of using, the proposed representation over the existing representations of triangular fuzzy numbers and will present with great clarity the proposed method and illustrate its application to FFCP problems occurring in real life situations.

An Analytical Technique For Solving Nonlinear Heat Transfer Equations, Hossein Aminikhah, Milad Hemmatnezhad
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, an analytic technique, namely the New Homotopy Perturbation Method (NHPM) is applied for solving the nonlinear differential equations arising in the field of heat transfer. In this method, the solution is considered as an infinite series expansion where converges rapidly to the exact solution. The nonlinear convective–radioactive cooling equation and nonlinear equation of conduction heat transfer with the variable physical properties are chosen as illustrative examples and the exact solutions have been found for each case.

Duality In Fuzzy Linear Programming With Symmetric Trapezoidal Numbers, S. H. Nasseri, E. Ebrahimnejad, S. Mizuno
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Linear programming problems with trapezoidal fuzzy numbers have recently attracted much interest. Various methods have been developed for solving these types of problems. Here, following the work of Ganesan and Veeramani and using the recent approach of Mahdavi-Amiri and Nasseri, we introduce the dual of the linear programming problem with symmetric trapezoidal fuzzy numbers and establish some duality results. The results will be useful for post optimality analysis.

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article, the analytical method, Homotopy perturbation method (HPM) has been successfully implemented for solving nonlinear logistic model of fractional order. The fractional derivatives are described in the Caputo sense. Using initial value, the explicit solutions of population size for different particular cases have been derived. Numerical results show that the method is extremely efficient to solve this complicated biological model.

Optimal Correction Of Infeasible System In Linear Equality Via Genetic Algorithm, S. Ketabchi, H. Moosaei, S. Fallahi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This work is focused on the optimal correction of infeasible system of linear equality. In this paper, for correcting this system, we will make the changes just in the coefficient matrix by using l norm and show that solving this problem is equivalent to solving a fractional quadratic problem. To solve this problem, we use the genetic algorithm. Some examples are provided to illustrate the efficiency and validity of the proposed method.

Solutions Of Nonlinear Second Order Multi-Point Boundary Value Problems By Homotopy Perturbation Method, S. Das, Sunil Kumar, O. P. Singh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we present an algorithm for the numerical solution of the second order multi- point boundary value problem with suitable multi boundary conditions. The algorithm is based on the homotopy perturbation approach and the solutions are calculated in the form of a rapid convergent series. It is observed that the method gives more realistic series solutions that converge very rapidly in physical problems. Illustrative numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the efficiency and simplicity of the proposed method in solving this type of multipoint boundary value problems.

Approximate Analytical Solutions For Fractional Space- And Time- Partial Differential Equations Using Homotopy Analysis Method, Subir, Das, R. Kumar, P. K. Gupta, Hossein Jafari
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This article presents the approximate analytical solutions of first order linear partial differential equations (PDEs) with fractional time- and space- derivatives. With the aid of initial values, the explicit solutions of the equations are solved making use of reliable algorithm like homotopy analysis method (HAM). The speed of convergence of the method is based on a rapidly convergent series with easily computable components. The fractional derivatives are described in Caputo sense. Numerical results show that the HAM is easy to implement and accurate when applied to space- time- fractional PDEs.

On The Eigenvalue And Inertia Problems For Descriptor Systems, Asadollah Aasaraai, Kameleh N. Pirbazari
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The present study is intended to demonstrate that for a descriptor system with matrix pencil there exists a matrix such that matrix and matrix pencil have the same positive and negative eigenvalues. It is also shown that matrix can be calculated as a contour integral. On the other hand, different representations for matrix are introduced.

Lipchitzian Stability Of Parametric Variational Inequalities Over Generalized Polyhedra In Banach Spaces, Liqun Ban, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Wen Song
Mathematics Research Reports
This paper concerns the study of solution maps to parameterized variational inequalities over generalized polyhedra in reflexive Banach spaces. It has been recognized that generalized polyhedral sets are significantly different from the usual convex polyhedra in infinite dimensions and play an important role in various applications to optimization, particularly to generalized linear programming. Our main goal is to fully characterize robust Lipschitzian stability of the aforementioned solutions maps entirely via their initial data. This is done on the base of the coderivative criterion in variational analysis via efficient calculations of the coderivative and related objects for the systems under consideration. …
The Positive Solutions Of The Matukuma Equation And The Problem Of Finite Radius And Finite Mass, Jurgen Batt, Yi Li
The Positive Solutions Of The Matukuma Equation And The Problem Of Finite Radius And Finite Mass, Jurgen Batt, Yi Li
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
This work is an extensive study of the 3 different types of positive solutions of the Matukuma equation 1r2(r2ϕ′)′=−rλ−2(1+r2)λ/2ϕp,p>1,λ>0 : the E-solutions (regular at r = 0), the M-solutions (singular at r = 0) and the F-solutions (whose existence begins away from r = 0). An essential tool is a transformation of the equation into a 2-dimensional asymptotically autonomous system, whose limit sets (by a theorem of H. R. Thieme) are the limit sets of Emden–Fowler systems, and serve as a characterization of the different solutions. The emphasis lies on the study of the M …

Curvedland: An Applet For Illustrating Curved Geometry Without Embedding, Gary Felder, Stephanie Erickson
Physics: Faculty Publications
We have written a Java applet to illustrate the meaning of curved geometry. The applet provides a mapping interface similar to MapQuest or Google Maps; features include the ability to navigate through a space and place permanent point objects and/or shapes at arbitrary positions. The underlying two-dimensional space has a constant, positive curvature, which causes the apparent paths and shapes of the objects in the map to appear distorted in ways that change as you view them from different relative angles and distances.
Existence Of Solutions For A Semilinear Wave Equation With Non-Monotone Nonlinearity, Alfonso Castro, Benjamin Preskill '09
Existence Of Solutions For A Semilinear Wave Equation With Non-Monotone Nonlinearity, Alfonso Castro, Benjamin Preskill '09
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
For double-periodic and Dirichlet-periodic boundary conditions, we prove the existence of solutions to a forced semilinear wave equation with asymptotically linear nonlinearity, no resonance, and non-monotone nonlinearity when the forcing term is not flat on characteristics. The solutions are in L∞ when the forcing term is in L∞ and continous when the forcing term is continuous. This is in contrast with the results in [4], where the non-enxistence of continuous solutions is established even when forcing term is of class C∞ but is flat on a characteristic.

This paper concerns developing a numerical method of the Newton type to solve systems of nonlinear equations described by nonsmooth continuous functions. We propose and justify a new generalized Newton algorithm based on graphical derivatives, which have never been used to derive a Newton-type method for solving nonsmooth equations. Based on advanced techniques of variational analysis and generalized differentiation, we establish the well-posedness of the algorithm, its local superlinear convergence, and its global convergence of the Kantorovich type. Our convergence results hold with no semismoothness assumption, which is illustrated by examples. The algorithm and main results obtained in the paper …
