Periodic Solutions And Positive Solutions Of First And Second Order Logistic Type Odes With Harvesting, Cody Alan Palmer May 2012

Periodic Solutions And Positive Solutions Of First And Second Order Logistic Type Odes With Harvesting, Cody Alan Palmer

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

It was recently shown that the nonlinear logistic type ODE with periodic harvesting has a bifurcation on the periodic solutions with respect to the parameter ε:

u' = f (u) - ε h (t).

Namely, there exists an ε0 such that for 0 < ε < ε0 there are two periodic solutions, for ε = ε0 there is one periodic solution, and for ε >ε0 there are no periodic solutions, provided that....

In this paper we look at some numerical evidence regarding the behavior of this threshold for various types of harvesting terms, in particular we find evidence in the negative or a conjecture regarding the behavior of this threshold value.

Additionally, we look at analagous steady states for the reaction-diusion …

Generic Special Objects, Sławomir Solecki Apr 2012

Generic Special Objects, Sławomir Solecki

Dalrymple Lecture Series

I will talk about mathematical objects that have two seemingly contradictory attributes. On the one hand, they are generic within a given class, in the sense that if most objects within the class have a property, then our object has it as well. So generic objects are common. On the other hand, they are very special if they exist, for example, there is always, in essence, at most one such object within a given class. Generic objects show up in various areas of mathematics, for example, in topology, geometry, and analysis. They tend to have astonishing mathematical features. Can you …

Stiefel And Grassmann Manifolds In Quantum Chemistry, Eduardo Chiumiento, Michael Melgaard Apr 2012

Stiefel And Grassmann Manifolds In Quantum Chemistry, Eduardo Chiumiento, Michael Melgaard

Articles

We establish geometric properties of Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds which arise in relation to Slatertype variational spaces in many-particle Hartree-Fock theory and beyond. In particular, we prove thatthey are analytic homogeneous spaces and submanifolds of the space of bounded operators on the single-particle Hilbert space. As a by-product we obtain that they are complete Finsler manifolds. These geometric properties underpin state-of-the-art results on existence of solutions to Hartree-Fock type equations.

Structure For Regular Inclusions, David R. Pitts Apr 2012

Structure For Regular Inclusions, David R. Pitts

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We study pairs (C,D) of unital C∗-algebras where D is an abelian C∗-subalgebra of C which is regular in C in the sense that the span of {v 2 C : vDv∗ [ v∗Dv D} is dense in C. When D is a MASA in C, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a completely positive unital map E of C into the injective envelope I(D) of D whose restriction to D is the identity on D. We show that the left kernel of E, L(C,D), is the unique closed two-sided ideal of C maximal with respect to having trivial …

Generating Minimal Pair-Wise Covering Test Suites, Luis C. Gutierrez ^, Martine Ceberio * Apr 2012

Generating Minimal Pair-Wise Covering Test Suites, Luis C. Gutierrez ^, Martine Ceberio *

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2012

Software is ubiquitous and needs to be reliable. Software testing therefore plays an important role in software development. Proper testing a software system informs about its quality and reliability so as to prevent unexpected behavior during system execution. One of the methods to prevent failures consists in testing a system under different input values, but when all possible input values are tested, an impractical number of test cases might result. In software testing, pair-wise testing is a combinatorial technique which uses combination of pair input values to generate test cases. Using pair-wise testing dramatically reduces the number of test cases, …

Negative Curves On Algebraic Surfaces, Thomas Bauer, Brian Harbourne, Andreas Leopold Knutsen, Alex Kuronya, Stefan Muller-Stach, Xavier Roulleau, Tomasz Szemberg

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We study curves of negative self-intersection on algebraic surfaces. In contrast to what occurs in positive characteristics, it turns out that any smooth complex projective surface X with a surjective non-isomorphic endomorphism has bounded negativity (i.e., that C2 is bounded below for prime divisors C on X). We prove the same statement for Shimura curves on Hilbert modular surfaces. As a byproduct we obtain that there exist only finitely many smooth Shimura curves on a given Hilbert modular surface. We. also show that any set of curves of bounded genus on a smooth complex projective surface must have bounded negativity

Water resources worldwide require management to meet industrial, agricultural, and urban consumption needs. Management actions change the natural flow regime, which impacts the river ecosystem. Water managers are tasked with meeting water needs while mitigating ecosystem impacts. We develop process-oriented advection-diffusion-reaction equations that couple hydraulic flow to population growth, and we analyze them to assess the effect of water flow on population persistence. We present a new mathematical framework, based on the net reproductive rate R0 for advection-diffusion-reaction equations and on related measures. We apply the measures to population persistence in rivers under various flow regimes. This work lays …

Mathematical Modeling Of Pipeline Features For Robotic Inspection, Yang Gao Apr 2012

Mathematical Modeling Of Pipeline Features For Robotic Inspection, Yang Gao

Doctoral Dissertations

Underground pipeline systems play an indispensable role in transporting liquids in both developed and developing countries. The associated social and economic cost to repair a pipe upon abrupt failure is often unacceptable. Regular inspection is a preventative action that aims to monitor pipe conditions, catch abnormalities and reduce the chance of undesirable surprises. Robots with CCTV video cameras have been used for decades to inspect pipelines, yielding only qualitative information. It is becoming necessary and preferable for municipalities, project managers and engineers to also quantify the 3-D geometry of underground pipe networks. Existing robots equipped specialized hardware and software algorithms …

Near-Optimal Scheduling And Decision-Making Models For Reactive And Proactive Fault Tolerance Mechanisms, Nichamon Naksinehaboon Apr 2012

Near-Optimal Scheduling And Decision-Making Models For Reactive And Proactive Fault Tolerance Mechanisms, Nichamon Naksinehaboon

Doctoral Dissertations

As High Performance Computing (HPC) systems increase in size to fulfill computational power demand, the chance of failure occurrences dramatically increases, resulting in potentially large amounts of lost computing time. Fault Tolerance (FT) mechanisms aim to mitigate the impact of failure occurrences to the running applications. However, the overhead of FT mechanisms increases proportionally to the HPC systems' size. Therefore, challenges arise in handling the expensive overhead of FT mechanisms while minimizing the large amount of lost computing time due to failure occurrences.

In this dissertation, a near-optimal scheduling model is built to determine when to invoke a hybrid checkpoint …

On Soliton Interactions For A Hierarchy Of Generalized Heisenberg Ferromagnetic Models On Su(3)/S(U(1) $\Times$ U(2)) Symmetric Space, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Alexander Mikhailov, Tihomir Valchev Mar 2012

On Soliton Interactions For A Hierarchy Of Generalized Heisenberg Ferromagnetic Models On Su(3)/S(U(1) $\Times$ U(2)) Symmetric Space, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Alexander Mikhailov, Tihomir Valchev

Articles

We consider an integrable hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations (NLEE) related to linear bundle Lax operator L. The Lax representation is Z2 \times Z2 reduced and is naturally associated with the symmetric space SU(3)/S(U(1) \times U(2)). The simplest nontrivial equation in the hierarchy is a generalization of Heisenberg ferromagnetic model. We construct the N-soliton solutions for an arbitrary member of the hierarchy by using the Zakharov-Shabat dressing method with an appropriately chosen dressing factor. Two types of soliton solutions: quadruplet and doublet solitons are found. The one-soliton solutions of NLEEs with even and odd dispersion laws have different properties. In …

Ball Remotality In Banach Spaces And Related Topics., Tanmoy Paul

Doctoral Theses

In this project we aim to study Ball Remotality and densely Ball Remotality of subspaces in Banach spaces. We study this property in many classical spaces of type c0, c,\\â„“p and C(K) where K is a compact Hausdorff space. The said problem also discussed for Banach spaces when considered as a subspace in its bidual. It is observed M-ideals in C(K) are densely ball remotal. It is shown that a particular type of M-ideal in A(K) where K is a Choquet simplex is densely ball remotal.

A Study Of The Gam Approach To Solve Laminar Boundary Layer Equations In The Presence Of A Wedge, Rahmat Ali Khan, Muhammad Usman Jan 2012

A Study Of The Gam Approach To Solve Laminar Boundary Layer Equations In The Presence Of A Wedge, Rahmat Ali Khan, Muhammad Usman

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We apply an easy and simple technique, the generalized ap- proximation method (GAM) to investigate the temperature field associated with the Falkner-Skan boundary-layer problem. The nonlinear partial differ- ential equations are transformed to nonlinear ordinary differential equations using the similarity transformations. An iterative scheme for the non-linear ordinary differential equations associated with the velocity and temperature profiles are developed via GAM. Numerical results for the dimensionless ve- locity and temperature profiles of the wedge flow are presented graphically for different values of the wedge angle and Prandtl number.

Searching for a job is always stressful and, with unemployment rates at their highest levels in years, never more so than now. Applicants can and should use every advantage at their disposal to obtain a job which is rewarding, financially and otherwise. While this author believes a math major gives applicants many advantages as they search for their dream job, one often overlooked is the ability to strategize and schedule their interviews to maximize the chance of landing that job.

Second Gradient Viscoelastic Fluids: Dissipation Principle And Free Energies, G. Amendola, M. Fabrizio, John Murrough Golden Jan 2012

Second Gradient Viscoelastic Fluids: Dissipation Principle And Free Energies, G. Amendola, M. Fabrizio, John Murrough Golden

Articles

We consider a generalization of the constitutive equation for an incompressible second order fluid, by including thermal and viscoelastic effects in the expression for the stress tensor. The presence of the histories of the strain rate tensor and its gradient yields a non-simple material, for which the laws of thermodynamics assume a modified form. These laws are expressed in terms of the internal mechanical power which is evaluated, using the dynamical equation for the fluid. Generalized thermodynamic constraints on the constitutive equation are presented. The required properties of free energy functionals are discussed. In particular, it is shown that they …

Two Integration Of Faith And Mathematics Projects For Freshmen Mathematics Majors, Nicholas J. Willis

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

Two projects will be presented that integrate faith and Mathematics in a freshman Introduction to Proofs class at George Fox University. The first project asks students to look at the life of a Christian Mathematician. The focus of this project is to show students that many great mathematicians also had immense faith. The second project asks students to take a close look at their own life. How do they plan to live a life of Christian faith in their chosen profession? Both projects are designed to encourage students to look at their careers in Mathematics as a vocation.

Lefschetz Properties And Enumerations, David Cook Ii Jan 2012

Lefschetz Properties And Enumerations, David Cook Ii

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

An artinian standard graded algebra has the weak Lefschetz property if the multiplication by a general linear form induces maps of maximal rank between consecutive degree components. It has the strong Lefschetz property if the multiplication by powers of a general linear form also induce maps of maximal rank between the appropriate degree components. These properties are mainly studied for the constraints they place, when present, on the Hilbert series of the algebra. While the majority of research on the Lefschetz properties has focused on characteristic zero, we primarily consider the presence of the properties in positive characteristic. We study …

Consensus-Type Stochastic Approximation Algorithms, Yu Sun Jan 2012

Consensus-Type Stochastic Approximation Algorithms, Yu Sun

Wayne State University Dissertations

This work is concerned with asymptotic properties of consensus-type algorithms for networked systems whose topologies switch randomly. The regime-switching process is modeled as a discrete-time Markov chain with a nite state space. The consensus control is achieved by designing stochastic approximation algorithms. In the setup, the regime-switching process (the Markov chain) contains a rate parameter

"Ε> 0 in the transition probability matrix that characterizes how frequently the topology switches. On the other hand, the consensus control algorithm uses a step-size Μ that denes how fast the network states are updated. Depending on their relative values, three distinct scenarios emerge. Under …

Here presented is the interrelationship between Eulerian polynomials, Eulerian fractions and Euler-Frobenius polynomials, Euler-Frobenius fractions, B-splines, respectively. The properties of Eulerian polynomials and Eulerian fractions and their applications in B-spline interpolation and evaluation of Riemann-zeta function values at odd integers are given. The relation between Eulerian numbers and B-spline values at knot points are also discussed.

Set Ideal Topological Spaces, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2012

Set Ideal Topological Spaces, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book the authors for the first time introduce a new type of topological spaces called the set ideal topological spaces using rings or semigroups, or used in the mutually exclusive sense. This type of topological spaces use the class of set ideals of a ring (semigroups). The rings or semigroups can be finite or infinite order. By this method we get complex modulo finite integer set ideal topological spaces using finite complex modulo integer rings or finite complex modulo integer semigroups. Also authors construct neutrosophic set ideal toplogical spaces of both finite and infinite order as well as …

Let G be a complex reductive algebraic group. Fix a Borel subgroup B of G and a maximal torus T in B. Call the monoid of dominant weights L+ and let S be a finitely generated submonoid of L+. V. Alexeev and M. Brion introduced a moduli scheme MS which classifies affine G-varieties X equipped with a T-equivariant isomorphism SpecC[X]U → SpecC[S], where U is the unipotent radical of B. Examples of MS have been obtained by S. Jansou, P. Bravi and S. Cupit-Foutou. In this paper, we prove that MS is isomorphic to an affine space when S is …

Rational Approximation On Compact Nowhere Dense Sets, Christopher Mattingly Jan 2012

Rational Approximation On Compact Nowhere Dense Sets, Christopher Mattingly

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

For a compact, nowhere dense set X in the complex plane, C, define Rp(X) as the closure of the rational functions with poles off X in Lp(X, dA). It is well known that for 1 ≤ p < 2, Rp(X) = Lp(X) . Although density may not be achieved for p > 2, there exists a set X so that Rp(X) = Lp(X) for p up to a given number greater than 2 but not after. Additionally, when p > 2 we shall establish that the support of the annihiliating and …

Analytic And Topological Combinatorics Of Partition Posets And Permutations, Jiyoon Jung

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In this dissertation we first study partition posets and their topology. For each composition c we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition c. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module of a border strip associated to the composition. We also study the filter of pointed set partitions generated by knapsack integer partitions. In the second half of this dissertation we study descent …

In this paper we present a numerical solution of a family of generalized fifth-order Korteweg-de Vries equations using a meshless method of lines. This method uses radial basis functions for spatial derivatives and Runge-Kutta method as a time integrator. This method exhibits high accuracy as seen from the comparison with the exact solutions.

Integrable Models For Shallow Water With Energy Dependent Spectral Problems, Rossen Ivanov, Tony Lyons

Articles

We study the inverse problem for the so-called operators with energy depending potentials. In particular, we study spectral operators with quadratic dependence on the spectral parameter. The corresponding hierarchy of integrable equations includes the Kaup–Boussinesq equation. We formulate the inverse problem as a Riemann–Hilbert problem with a Z2 reduction group. The soliton solutions are explicitly obtained.

A Zeta Function For Juggling Sequences, Carsten Elsner, Dominic Klyve, Erik R. Tou Jan 2012

A Zeta Function For Juggling Sequences, Carsten Elsner, Dominic Klyve, Erik R. Tou

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

We give a new generalization of the Riemann zeta function to the set of b-ball juggling sequences. We develop several properties of this zeta function, noting among other things that it is rational in b−s. We provide a meromorphic continuation of the juggling zeta function to the entire complex plane (except for a countable set of singularities) and completely enumerate its zeroes. For most values of b, we are able to show that the zeroes of the b-ball zeta function are located within a critical strip, which is closely analogous to that of the Riemann zeta function.

Dual numbers was first introduced by W.K. Clifford in 1873. This nice concept has lots of applications; to screw systems, modeling plane joint, iterative methods for displacement analysis of spatial mechanisms, inertial force analysis of spatial mechanisms etc. In this book the authors study dual numbers in a special way. The main aim of this book is to find rich sources of new elements g such that g2 = 0. The main sources of such new elements are from Zn, n a composite number. We give algebraic structures on them. This book is organized into six chapters. The final chapter …
