One-Parameter Families Of Supersymmetric Isospectral Potentials From Riccati Solutions In Function Composition Form, Haret C. Rosu, S.C. Mancas, Pisin Chen Apr 2014

One-Parameter Families Of Supersymmetric Isospectral Potentials From Riccati Solutions In Function Composition Form, Haret C. Rosu, S.C. Mancas, Pisin Chen

Publications

In the context of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we define a potential through a particular Riccati solution of the composition form (F∘f)(x)=F(f(x)) and obtain a generalized Mielnik construction of one-parameter isospectral potentials when we use the general Riccati solution. Some examples for special cases of F and f are given to illustrate the method. An interesting result is obtained in the case of a parametric double well potential generated by this method, for which it is shown that the parameter of the potential controls the heights of the localization probability in the two wells, and for certain values of the parameter …

Euler-Poincar´E Equations For G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov Mar 2014

Euler-Poincar´E Equations For G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov

Conference papers

The G-strand equations for a map R×R into a Lie group G are associated to a G-invariant Lagrangian. The Lie group manifold is also the configuration space for the Lagrangian. The G-strand itself is the map g(t,s):R×R→G, where t and s are the independent variables of the G-strand equations. The Euler-Poincar'e reduction of the variational principle leads to a formulation where the dependent variables of the G-strand equations take values in the corresponding Lie algebra g and its co-algebra, g∗ with respect to the pairing provided by the variational derivatives of the Lagrangian. We review examples of different G-strand …

A Generalization Of Aztec Diamond Theorem, Part I, Tri Lai Mar 2014

A Generalization Of Aztec Diamond Theorem, Part I, Tri Lai

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We consider a new family of 4-vertex regions with zigzag boundary on the square lattice with diagonals drawn in. By proving that the number of tilings of the new regions is given by a power 2, we generalize both Aztec diamond theorem and Douglas’ theorem. The proof extends an idea of Eu and Fu for Aztec diamonds, by using a bijection between domino tilings and non-intersecting Schr¨oder paths, then applying Lindstr¨om-Gessel-Viennot methodology.

Conditional Tests On Basins Of Attraction With Finite Fields, Ian H. Dinwoodie Mar 2014

Conditional Tests On Basins Of Attraction With Finite Fields, Ian H. Dinwoodie

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

An iterative method is given for computing the polynomials that vanish on the basin of attraction of a steady state in discrete polynomial dynamics with finite field coefficients. The algorithm is applied to dynamics of a T cell survival network where it is used to compare transition maps conditional on a basin of attraction.

A Simple Proof For The Number Of Tilings Of Quartered Aztec Diamonds, Tri Lai Jan 2014

A Simple Proof For The Number Of Tilings Of Quartered Aztec Diamonds, Tri Lai

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We get four quartered Aztec diamonds by dividing an Aztec diamond region by two zigzag cuts passing its center. W. Jockusch and J. Propp (in an unpublished work) found that the number of tilings of quartered Aztec diamonds is given by simple product formulas. In this paper we present a simple proof for this result.

Mechanical Visualization Of A Second Order Dynamic Equation On Varying Time Scales, Molly Kathryn Peterson Jan 2014

Mechanical Visualization Of A Second Order Dynamic Equation On Varying Time Scales, Molly Kathryn Peterson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this work, we give an introduction to Time Scales Calculus, the properties of the exponential function on an arbitrary time scale, and use it to solve linear dynamic equation of second order. Time Scales Calculus was introduced by Stefan Hilger in 1988. It brings together the theories of difference and differential equations into one unified theory. By using the properties of the delta derivative and the delta anti-derivative, we analyze the behavior of a second order linear homogeneous dynamic equation on various time scales. After the analytical discussion, we will graphically evaluate the second order dynamic equation in Marshall’s …

Evolution Of Perturbations In Flow Field Mechanics, Samantha R. Bell, David Forliti, Nils Sedano, Kriss Vanderhyde Jan 2014

Evolution Of Perturbations In Flow Field Mechanics, Samantha R. Bell, David Forliti, Nils Sedano, Kriss Vanderhyde

STAR Program Research Presentations

This project explores the stability analysis of a given flow field. Specifically, where the peak disturbance occurs in a flow as this is the disturbance that is most likely to occur. In rocket combustion, it is important to understand where the maximum disturbance occurs so that the mixing of fuel can be stabilized. The instabilities are the results of frequencies in the area surrounding the flow field. The linear stability governing equations are employed to better understand the disturbance. The governing equations for continuity and momentum in the x and y directions are used to form an equation for the …

Graph Partitioning Using Matrix Values For Preconditioning Symmetric Positive Definite Systems, Eugenr Vecharynski, Yousef Saad, Masha Sosonkina Jan 2014

Graph Partitioning Using Matrix Values For Preconditioning Symmetric Positive Definite Systems, Eugenr Vecharynski, Yousef Saad, Masha Sosonkina

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Prior to the parallel solution of a large linear system, it is required to perform a partitioning of its equations/unknowns. Standard partitioning algorithms are designed using the considerations of the efficiency of the parallel matrix-vector multiplication, and typically disregard the information on the coefficients of the matrix. This information, however, may have a significant impact on the quality of the preconditioning procedure used within the chosen iterative scheme. In the present paper, we suggest a spectral partitioning algorithm, which takes into account the information on the matrix coefficients and constructs partitions with respect to the objective of enhancing the quality …

Fast Algorithms For Analyzing Partially Ranked Data, Matthew Mcdermott Jan 2014

Fast Algorithms For Analyzing Partially Ranked Data, Matthew Mcdermott

HMC Senior Theses

Imagine your local creamery administers a survey asking their patrons to choose their five favorite ice cream flavors. Any data collected by this survey would be an example of partially ranked data, as the set of all possible flavors is only ranked into subsets of the chosen flavors and the non-chosen flavors. If the creamery asks you to help analyze this data, what approaches could you take? One approach is to use the natural symmetries of the underlying data space to decompose any data set into smaller parts that can be more easily understood. In this work, I describe …

A Mathematical Framework For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Obstacle Avoidance, Sorathan Chaturapruek Jan 2014

A Mathematical Framework For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Obstacle Avoidance, Sorathan Chaturapruek

HMC Senior Theses

The obstacle avoidance navigation problem for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is a very challenging problem. It lies at the intersection of many fields such as probability, differential geometry, optimal control, and robotics. We build a mathematical framework to solve this problem for quadrotors using both a theoretical approach through a Hamiltonian system and a machine learning approach that learns from human sub-experts' multiple demonstrations in obstacle avoidance. Prior research on the machine learning approach uses an algorithm that does not incorporate geometry. We have developed tools to solve and test the obstacle avoidance problem through mathematics.

Infinitely Many Rotationally Symmetric Solutions To A Class Of Semilinear Laplace-Beltrami Equations On The Unit Sphere, Emily M. Fischer Jan 2014

Infinitely Many Rotationally Symmetric Solutions To A Class Of Semilinear Laplace-Beltrami Equations On The Unit Sphere, Emily M. Fischer

HMC Senior Theses

I show that a class of semilinear Laplace-Beltrami equations has infinitely many solutions on the unit sphere which are symmetric with respect to rotations around some axis. This equation corresponds to a singular ordinary differential equation, which we solve using energy analysis. We obtain a Pohozaev-type identity to prove that the energy is continuously increasing with the initial condition and then use phase plane analysis to prove the existence of infinitely many solutions.

Composition Of Integers With Bounded Parts, Darren B. Glass Jan 2014

Composition Of Integers With Bounded Parts, Darren B. Glass

Math Faculty Publications

In this note, we consider ordered partitions of integers such that each entry is no more than a fixed portion of the sum. We give a method for constructing all such compositions as well as both an explicit formula and a generating function describing the number of k-tuples whose entries are bounded in this way and sum to a fixed value g.

Experiments On Surfactants And Thin Fluid Films, Peter Megson Jan 2014

Experiments On Surfactants And Thin Fluid Films, Peter Megson

HMC Senior Theses

We investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of a surfactant monolayer on a thin fluid film spreading inward into a region devoid of surfactant, a system motivated by the alveolus of the human lung. We perform experiments that simultaneously measure the fluid height profile and the fluorescence intensity due to our fluorescent surfactant, NBD-PC. We perform experiments on both a Newtonian layer of glycerol and a shear-thinning fluid layer consisting of xanthan gum mixed with glycerol. We can very successfully extract height profiles on the xanthan gum fluid, although the simultaneous measurement of fluorescent intensity profiles proved problematic, as the laser tended …

Numerical Algorithms For Solving A Generalized Cancer Chemotherapy Problem, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin Jan 2014

Numerical Algorithms For Solving A Generalized Cancer Chemotherapy Problem, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin

Math and Computer Science Faculty Working Papers

In this paper, two elaborate numerical algorithms are presented for solving the Nani- Oguztoreli functional differential equations associated with cell-cycle specific cancer chemotherapy. The generalized cell-cycle specific cancer chemotherapy model of Nani- Oguztoreli contains discrete time delays which represent the times that the cancer cells spend in each cell-cycle phase. The model also takes into account that inter-cell cycle phase transition rate constants, recruitment of resting cells from the GO phase, and effect of chemotherapy drug on cells in each phase. The algorithms utilize a modified version of the Method of Steps algorithms. The constructed numerical schemes can be implemented …

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions Iii: Further Theory And Classification, Nataniel Greene Jan 2014

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions Iii: Further Theory And Classification, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

This paper continues the work of this series with two results. The first is an exponential equivalence theorem which states that every generalized least-squares regression line can be generated by an equivalent exponential regression. It follows that every generalized least-squares line has an effective normalized exponential parameter between 0 and 1 which classifies the line on the spectrum between ordinary least-squares and the extremal line for a given set of data. The second result is the presentation of fundamental formulas for the generalized least-squares slope and y-intercept.

Epistasis In Predator-Prey Relationships, Iuliia Inozemtseva Jan 2014

Epistasis In Predator-Prey Relationships, Iuliia Inozemtseva

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Epistasis is the interaction between two or more genes to control a single phenotype. We model epistasis of the prey in a two-locus two-allele problem in a basic predator- prey relationship. The resulting model allows us to examine both population sizes as well as genotypic and phenotypic frequencies. In the context of several numerical examples, we show that if epistasis results in an undesirable or desirable phenotype in the prey by making the particular genotype more or less susceptible to the predator or dangerous to the predator, elimination of undesirable phenotypes and then genotypes occurs.

A Numerical Method For A Nonlinear Singularly Perturbed Interior Layer Problem Using An Approximate Layer Location, Jason Quinn Jan 2014

A Numerical Method For A Nonlinear Singularly Perturbed Interior Layer Problem Using An Approximate Layer Location, Jason Quinn

Articles

A class of nonlinear singularly perturbed interior layer problems is examined in this paper. Solutions exhibit an interior layer at an a priori unknown location. A numerical method is presented that uses a piecewise uniform mesh refined around approximations to the first two terms of the asymptotic expansion of the interior layer location. The first term in the expansion is used exactly in the construction of the approximation which restricts the range of problem data considered. The method is shown to converge point-wise to the true solution with a first order convergence rate (overlooking a logarithmic factor) for sufficiently small …

The Geometry Of The Projective Joint Spectrum And The Commutativity Of Self-Adjoint Operators, Isaak Chagouel Jan 2014

The Geometry Of The Projective Joint Spectrum And The Commutativity Of Self-Adjoint Operators, Isaak Chagouel

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The theory of single operators is by now a very mature subject, with the notion of spectrum playing a key role in the theory. However, multivariate operator theory is only in its very early stages of development. There is not even wide agreement about how "the joint spectrum" of an n-tuple A = (A1, · · · , An) of bounded linear operators on the same Hilbert space H should be defined.

Communicative Universal Convertibility Matter-Energy-Information, Florentin Smarandache, Stefan Vladutescu Jan 2014

Communicative Universal Convertibility Matter-Energy-Information, Florentin Smarandache, Stefan Vladutescu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The research aims to reveal and prove the thesis of the neutral and convertibility relationship between constituent constructive elements of the universe: matter, energy and information. The approach perspective is a computationally-communicative-neutrosophic one. We configure a coherent and cohesive ideation line. Matter, energy and information are fundamental elements of the world. Among them, there is an inextricable multiple, elastic and evolutionary connection. The elements are defined by the connections between them. Our hypothesis is that the relationship between matter, energy and information is a neutral one. This relationship is not required by the evidence. At this level, it does not …

A Generalization Of Poincaré-Cartan Integral Invariants Of A Nonlinear Nonholonomic Dynamical System, Muhammad Usman, M. Imran Jan 2014

A Generalization Of Poincaré-Cartan Integral Invariants Of A Nonlinear Nonholonomic Dynamical System, Muhammad Usman, M. Imran

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Based on the d'Alembert-Lagrange-Poincar\'{e} variational principle, we formulate general equations of motion for mechanical systems subject to nonlinear nonholonomic constraints, that do not involve Lagrangian undetermined multipliers. We write these equations in a canonical form called the Poincar\'{e}-Hamilton equations, and study a version of corresponding Poincar\'{e}-Cartan integral invariant which are derived by means of a type of asynchronous variation of the Poincar\'{e} variables of the problem that involve the variation of the time. As a consequence, it is shown that the invariance of a certain line integral under the motion of a mechanical system of the type considered characterizes the …

Lyapunov Functionals That Lead To Exponential Stability And Instability In Finite Delay Volterra Difference Equations, Catherine Kublik, Youssef Raffoul Jan 2014

Lyapunov Functionals That Lead To Exponential Stability And Instability In Finite Delay Volterra Difference Equations, Catherine Kublik, Youssef Raffoul

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We use Lyapunov functionals to obtain sufficient conditions that guarantee exponential stability of the zero solution of the finite delay Volterra difference equation.

Also, by displaying a slightly different Lyapunov functional, we obtain conditions that guarantee the instability of the zero solution. The highlight of the paper is the relaxing of the condition |a(t)| < 1. Moreover, we provide examples in which we show that our theorems provide an improvement of some recent results.

Hamiltonian Formulation Of 2 Bounded Immiscible Media With Constant Non-Zero Vorticities And A Common Interface, Alan Compelli Jan 2014

Hamiltonian Formulation Of 2 Bounded Immiscible Media With Constant Non-Zero Vorticities And A Common Interface, Alan Compelli

Articles

We examine a 2-dimensional water-wave system, with gravitationally induced waves, consisting of a lower medium bound underneath by an impermeable flat bed and an upper medium bound above by an impermeable lid such that the 2 media have a free common interface. Both media have constant density and constant (non-zero) vorticity. By examining the governing equations of the system we calculate the Hamiltonian of the system in terms of it's conjugate variables and per- form a variable transformation to show that it has canonical Hamiltonian structure.

Multi-Peak Solutions To Two Types Of Free Boundary Problems, Yi Li, Shuangjie Peng Jan 2014

Multi-Peak Solutions To Two Types Of Free Boundary Problems, Yi Li, Shuangjie Peng

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the existence of multi-peak solutions to two types of free boundary problems arising in confined plasma and steady vortex pair under conditions on the nonlinearity we believe to be almost optimal. Our results show that the “core” of the solution has multiple connected components, whose boundary called free boundary of the problems consists approximately of spheres which shrink to distinct single points as the parameter tends to zero.

Neutrosophic Ideal Theory Neutrosophic Local Function And Generated Neutrosophic Topology, A. A. Salama, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper we introduce the notion of ideals on neutrosophic set which is considered as a generalization of fuzzy and fuzzy intuitionistic ideals studies in [9,11] , the important neutrosophic ideals has been given in [4]. The concept of neutrosophic local function is also introduced for a neutrosophic topological space. These concepts are discussed with a view to find new nutrosophic topology from the original one in [8]. The basic structure, especially a basis for such generated neutrosophic topologies and several relations between different neutrosophic ideals and neutrosophic topologies are also studied here. Possible application to GIS topology rules …

Algebraic Structures On Fuzzy Unit Square And Neutrosophic Unit Square, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors build algebraic structures on fuzzy unit semi open square UF = {(a, b) | a, b  [0, 1)} and on the fuzzy neutrosophic unit semi open square UN = {a + bI | a, b  [0, 1)}. This study is new and we define, develop and describe several interesting and innovative theories about them. We cannot build ring on UN or UF. We have only pseudo rings of infinite order. We also build pseudo semirings using these semi open unit squares. We construct vector spaces, S-vector spaces and strong pseudo special vector space using …

Introduction To Neutrosophic Statistics, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2014

Introduction To Neutrosophic Statistics, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic Statistics means statistical analysis of population or sample that has indeterminate (imprecise, ambiguous, vague, incomplete, unknown) data. For example, the population or sample size might not be exactly determinate because of some individuals that partially belong to the population or sample, and partially they do not belong, or individuals whose appurtenance is completely unknown. Also, there are population or sample individuals whose data could be indeterminate.

In this book, we develop the 1995 notion of neutrosophic statistics. We present various practical examples. It is possible to define the neutrosophic statistics in many ways, because there are various types of …

Neutrosophic Theory means Neutrosophy applied in many fields in order to solve problems related to indeterminacy. Neutrosophy is a new branch of philosophy that studies the origin, nature, and scope of neutralities, as well as their interactions with different ideational spectra. This theory considers every entity together with its opposite or negation and with their spectrum of neutralities in between them (i.e. entities supporting neither nor ). The and ideas together are referred to as . Neutrosophy is a generalization of Hegel's dialectics (the last one is based on and only). According to this theory every entity tends to be …

These squares under addition modulo ‘n’ is a group and however under product  this semi open square is only a semigroup as under  the square has infinite number of zero divisors. Apart from + and  we define min and max operation on this square. Under min and max operation this semi real open square is a semiring. It is interesting to note that this semi open square is not a ring under + and  since …
