Gene Expression Noise Enhances Robust Organization Of The Early Mammalian Blastocyst, William R. Holmes, Nabora Soledad Reyes De Mochel, Qixuan Wang, Huijing Du, Tao Peng, Michael Chiang, Olivier Cinquin, Ken Cho, Qing Nie

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

A critical event in mammalian embryo development is construction of an inner cell mass surrounded by a trophoectoderm (a shell of cells that later form extraembryonic structures). We utilize multi-scale, stochastic modeling to investigate the design principles responsible for robust establishment of these structures. This investigation makes three predictions, each supported by our quantitative imaging. First, stochasticity in the expression of critical genes promotes cell plasticity and has a critical role in accurately organizing the developing mouse blastocyst. Second, asymmetry in the levels of noise variation (expression fluctuation) of Cdx2 and Oct4 provides a means to gain the benefits of …

Orbital Stability Results For Soliton Solutions To Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With External Potentials, Joseph B. Lindgren Jan 2017

Orbital Stability Results For Soliton Solutions To Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With External Potentials, Joseph B. Lindgren

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

For certain nonlinear Schroedinger equations there exist solutions which are called solitary waves. Addition of a potential $V$ changes the dynamics, but for small enough $||V||_{L^\infty}$ we can still obtain stability (and approximately Newtonian motion of the solitary wave's center of mass) for soliton-like solutions up to a finite time that depends on the size and scale of the potential $V$. Our method is an adaptation of the well-known Lyapunov method.

For the sake of completeness, we also prove long-time stability of traveling solitons in the case $V=0$.

Interaction Graphs Derived From Activation Functions And Their Application To Gene Regulation, Simon Joyce Jan 2017

Interaction Graphs Derived From Activation Functions And Their Application To Gene Regulation, Simon Joyce

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Interaction graphs are graphic representations of complex networks of mutually interacting components. Their main application is in the field of gene regulatory networks, where they are used to visualize how the expression levels of genes activate or inhibit the expression levels of other genes.

First we develop a natural transformation of activation functions and their derived interaction graphs, called conjugation, that is related to a natural transformation of signed digraphs called switching isomorphism. This is a useful tool for the analysis of interaction graphs used throughout the rest of the dissertation.

We then discuss the question of what restrictions, if …

Long And Short-Range Air Navigation On Spherical Earth, Nihad E. Daidzic Jan 2017

Long And Short-Range Air Navigation On Spherical Earth, Nihad E. Daidzic

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Global range air navigation implies non-stop flight between any two airports on Earth. Such effort would require airplanes with the operational air range of at least 12,500 NM which is about 40-60% longer than anything existing in commercial air transport today. Air transportation economy requires flying shortest distance, which in the case of spherical Earth are Orthodrome arcs. Rhumb-line navigation has little practical use in long-range flights, but has been presented for historical reasons and for comparison. Database of about 50 major international airports from every corner of the world has been designed and used in testing and route validation. …

Complex Valued Graphs For Soft Computing, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors for the first time introduce in a systematic way the notion of complex valued graphs, strong complex valued graphs and complex neutrosophic valued graphs. Several interesting properties are defined, described and developed. Most of the conjectures which are open in case of usual graphs continue to be open problems in case of both complex valued graphs and strong complex valued graphs. We also give some applications of them in soft computing and social networks. At this juncture it is pertinent to keep on record that Dr. Tohru Nitta was the pioneer to use complex valued graphs …

Neutrosophic Triplet Groups And Their Applications To Mathematical Modelling, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K.

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The innovative notion of neutrosophic triplet groups, introduced by Smarandache and Ali in 2014-2016, happens to yield the anti-element and neutral element once the element is given. It is established that the neutrosophic triplet group collection forms the classical group under product for Zn, for some specific n. However the collection is not even closed under sum. These neutrosophic triplet groups are built using only modulo integers or Cayley tables. Several interesting properties related with them are defined. It is pertinent to record that in Zn, when n is a prime number, we cannot get a neutral element which can …

On A Time Domain Boundary Integral Equation Formulation For Acoustic Scattering By Rigid Bodies In Uniform Mean Flow, Fang Q. Hu, Michelle E. Pizzo, Douglas M. Nark Jan 2017

On A Time Domain Boundary Integral Equation Formulation For Acoustic Scattering By Rigid Bodies In Uniform Mean Flow, Fang Q. Hu, Michelle E. Pizzo, Douglas M. Nark

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

It has been well-known that under the assumption of a uniform mean flow, the acoustic wave propagation equation can be formulated as a boundary integral equation. However, the constant mean flow assumption, while convenient for formulating the integral equation, does not satisfy the solid wall boundary condition wherever the body surface is not aligned with the assumed uniform flow. A customary boundary condition for rigid surfaces is that the normal acoustic velocity be zero. In this paper, a careful study of the acoustic energy conservation equation is presented that shows such a boundary condition would in fact lead to source …

An Early Semester Mastery Activity And Intervention In First-Year Calculus, Allan P. Donsig, Nathan Wakefield Jan 2017

An Early Semester Mastery Activity And Intervention In First-Year Calculus, Allan P. Donsig, Nathan Wakefield

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Success in first-year mathematics courses is essential for students to pursue STEM careers, including teaching careers. We investigate a mastery activity given during the first two weeks of a first-year calculus course at the research site. Previous work showed a model using this activity in College Algebra, together with ACT and high school rank, was predictive of student success in precalculus. Here we do a similar analysis for such an activity in calculus, including an intervention for students who do not complete the activity. We also investigate the intervention’s effectiveness. These results show that the early mastery activity, especially when …

Triple Non-Negative Matrix Factorization Technique For Sentiment Analysis And Topic Modeling, Alexander A. Waggoner Jan 2017

Triple Non-Negative Matrix Factorization Technique For Sentiment Analysis And Topic Modeling, Alexander A. Waggoner

CMC Senior Theses

Topic modeling refers to the process of algorithmically sorting documents into categories based on some common relationship between the documents. This common relationship between the documents is considered the “topic” of the documents. Sentiment analysis refers to the process of algorithmically sorting a document into a positive or negative category depending whether this document expresses a positive or negative opinion on its respective topic. In this paper, I consider the open problem of document classification into a topic category, as well as a sentiment category. This has a direct application to the retail industry where companies may want to scour …

Network Analytics For The Mirna Regulome And Mirna-Disease Interactions, Joseph Jayakar Nalluri Jan 2017

Network Analytics For The Mirna Regulome And Mirna-Disease Interactions, Joseph Jayakar Nalluri

Theses and Dissertations

miRNAs are non-coding RNAs of approx. 22 nucleotides in length that inhibit gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. By virtue of this gene regulation mechanism, miRNAs play a critical role in several biological processes and patho-physiological conditions, including cancers. miRNA behavior is a result of a multi-level complex interaction network involving miRNA-mRNA, TF-miRNA-gene, and miRNA-chemical interactions; hence the precise patterns through which a miRNA regulates a certain disease(s) are still elusive. Herein, I have developed an integrative genomics methods/pipeline to (i) build a miRNA regulomics and data analytics repository, (ii) create/model these interactions into networks and use optimization techniques, motif …

A New Formulation Of Time Boundary Integral Equation For Acoustic Wave Scattering In The Presence Of A Uniform Mean Flow, Fang Q. Hu, Michelle E. Pizzo, Douglas M. Nark Jan 2017

A New Formulation Of Time Boundary Integral Equation For Acoustic Wave Scattering In The Presence Of A Uniform Mean Flow, Fang Q. Hu, Michelle E. Pizzo, Douglas M. Nark

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

It has been well-known that under the assumption of a constant uniform mean flow, the acoustic wave propagation equation can be formulated as a boundary integral equation, in both the time domain and the frequency domain. Compared with solving partial differential equations, numerical methods based on the boundary integral equation have the advantage of a reduced spatial dimension and, hence, requiring only a surface mesh. However, the constant uniform mean flow assumption, while convenient for formulating the integral equation, does not satisfy the solid wall boundary condition wherever the body surface is not aligned with the uniform mean flow. In …

Series Solutions Of Polarized Gowdy Universes, Doniray Brusaferro Jan 2017

Series Solutions Of Polarized Gowdy Universes, Doniray Brusaferro

Theses and Dissertations

Einstein's field equations are a system of ten partial differential equations. For a special class of spacetimes known as Gowdy spacetimes, the number of equations is reduced due to additional structure of two dimensional isometry groups with mutually orthogonal Killing vectors. In this thesis, we focus on a particular model of Gowdy spacetimes known as the polarized T3 model, and provide an explicit solution to Einstein's equations.

Equators Have At Most Countable Many Singularities With Bounded Total Angle, Pilar Herreros, Mario Ponce, J.J.P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

For distinct points p and q in a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold, one defines their mediatrix Lpq as the set of equidistant points to p and q. It is known that mediatrices have a cell decomposition consisting of a finite number of branch points connected by Lipschitz curves. In the case of a topological sphere, mediatrices are called equators and it can benoticed that there are no branching points, thus an equator is a topological circle with possibly many Lipschitz singularities. This paper establishes that mediatrices have the radial …

Characterization Of Rectifying And Sphere Curves In R^3, Yun Myung Oh, Julie Logan Jan 2017

Characterization Of Rectifying And Sphere Curves In R^3, Yun Myung Oh, Julie Logan

Faculty Publications

Studies of curves in 3D-space have been developed by many geometers and it is known that any regular curve in 3D space is completely determined by its curvature and torsion, up to position. Many results have been found to characterize various types of space curves in terms of conditions on the ratio of torsion to curvature. Under an extracondition on the constant curvature, Y.L. Seo and Y. M. Oh found the series solution when the ratio of torsion to curvature is a linear function. Furthermore, this solution is known to be a rectifying curve by B. Y. Chen’s work. This …

Mechanistic Plug-And-Play Models For Understanding The Impact Of Control And Climate On Seasonal Dengue Dynamics In Iquitos, Peru, Nathan Levick

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Dengue virus is a mosquito-borne multi-serotype disease whose dynamics are not precisely understood despite half of the world’s human population being at risk of infection. A recent dataset of dengue case reports from an isolated Amazonian city— Iquitos, Peru—provides a unique opportunity to assess dengue dynamics in a simpli- fied setting. Ten years of clinical surveillance data reveal a specific pattern: two novel serotypes, in turn, invaded and exclusively dominated incidence over several seasonal cycles, despite limited intra-annual variation in climate conditions. Together with mechanistic mathematical models, these data can provide an improved understand- ing of the nonlinear interactions between …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper we prove convergence of the method of successive approximations used to approximate the solution of nonlinear two-dimensional Volterra-Fredholm integral equations and define the notion of numerical stability of the algorithm with respect to the choice of the first iteration. Also we present an iterative procedure to solve such equations. Finally, the method is illustrated by solving some examples.

On The Slow Growth And Approximation Of Entire Function Solutions Of Second-Order Elliptic Partial Differential Equations On Caratheodory Domains, Devendra Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper we consider the regular, real-valued solutions of the second-order elliptic partial differential equation. The characterization of generalized growth parameters for entire function solutions for slow growth in terms of approximation errors on more generalized domains, i.e., Caratheodory domains, has been obtained. Moreover, we studied some inequalities concerning the growth parameters of entire function solutions of above equation for slow growth which have not been studied so far.

Heat Source Thermoelastic Problem In A Hollow Elliptic Cylinder Under Time-Reversal Principle, Pravin Bhad, Vinod Varghese, Lalsingh Khalsa Dec 2016

Heat Source Thermoelastic Problem In A Hollow Elliptic Cylinder Under Time-Reversal Principle, Pravin Bhad, Vinod Varghese, Lalsingh Khalsa

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The article investigates the time-reversal thermoelasticity of a hollow elliptical cylinder for determining the temperature distribution and its associated thermal stresses at a certain point using integral transform techniques by unifying classical orthogonal polynomials as the kernel. Furthermore, by considering a circle as a special kind of ellipse, it is seen that the temperature distribution and the comparative study of a circular cylinder can be derived as a special case from the present mathematical solution. The numerical results obtained are accurate enough for practical purposes.

Density-Dependent Leslie Matrix Modeling For Logistic Populations With Steady-State Distribution Control, Bruce Kessler, Andrew Davis Dec 2016

Density-Dependent Leslie Matrix Modeling For Logistic Populations With Steady-State Distribution Control, Bruce Kessler, Andrew Davis

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The Leslie matrix model allows for the discrete modeling of population age-groups whose total population grows exponentially. Many attempts have been made to adapt this model to a logistic model with a carrying capacity (see [1], [2], [4], [5], and [6]), with mixed results. In this paper we provide a new model for logistic populations that tracks age-group populations with repeated multiplication of a density-dependent matrix constructed from an original Leslie matrix, the chosen carrying capacity of the model, and the desired steady-state age-group distribution. The total populations from the model converge to a discrete logistic model with the same …

Complex Solutions Of The Time Fractional Gross-Pitaevskii (Gp) Equation With External Potential By Using A Reliable Method, Nasir Taghizadeh, Mona N. Foumani

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, modified (G'/G )-expansion method is presented to establish the exact complex solutions of the time fractional Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation in the sense of the conformable fractional derivative. This method is an effective method in finding exact traveling wave solutions of nonlinear evolution equations (NLEEs) in mathematical physics. The present approach has the potential to be applied to other nonlinear fractional differential equations. Based on two transformations, fractional GP equation can be converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equation of integer orders. In the end, we will discuss the solutions of the fractional GP equation with external potentials.

Integration Over Curves And Surfaces Defined By The Closest Point Mapping, Catherine Kublik, Richard Tsai Dec 2016

Integration Over Curves And Surfaces Defined By The Closest Point Mapping, Catherine Kublik, Richard Tsai

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We propose a new formulation for integrating over smooth curves and surfaces that are described by their closest point mappings. Our method is designed for curves and surfaces that are not defined by any explicit parameterization and is intended to be used in combination with level set techniques. However, contrary to the common practice with level set methods, the volume integrals derived from our formulation coincide exactly with the surface or line integrals that one wishes to compute. We study various aspects of this formulation and provide a geometric interpretation of this formulation in terms of the singular values of …

A Traders Guide To The Predictive Universe- A Model For Predicting Oil Price Targets And Trading On Them, Jimmie Harold Lenz

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

At heart every trader loves volatility; this is where return on investment comes from, this is what drives the proverbial “positive alpha.” As a trader, understanding the probabilities related to the volatility of prices is key, however if you could also predict future prices with reliability the world would be your oyster. To this end, I have achieved three goals with this dissertation, to develop a model to predict future short term prices (direction and magnitude), to effectively test this by generating consistent profits utilizing a trading model developed for this purpose, and to write a paper that anyone with …

Projective-Planar Graphs With No K3,4-Minor. Ii., John Maharry, Dan Slilaty

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The authors previously published an iterative process to generate a class of projectiveplanar K3,4-free graphs called ‘patch graphs’. They also showed that any simple, almost 4-connected, nonplanar, and projective-planar graph that is K3,4-free is a subgraph of a patch graph. In this paper, we describe a simpler and more natural class of cubic K3,4- free projective-planar graphs which we call M¨obius hyperladders. Furthermore, every simple, almost 4-connected, nonplanar, and projective-planar graph that is K3,4-free is a minor of a M¨obius hyperladder. As applications of these structures we determine the page number of patch graphs and of M¨obius hyperladders.
