Dynamical Behavior Of A Malaria Relapse Model With Insecticide Treated Nets (Itns) As Protection Measure, Reuben I. Gweryina, Anande R. Kimbir

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Malaria is a tropical disease which is mainly spread by plasmodium falciparum which has been the principal enemy to the existence of mankind till date. In this paper a version of a malaria model incorporating the use of treated mosquito nets as a disease control strategy is proposed and then transformed into proportions, so as to assess the global impact of ITNs on the prevalence of malaria. Constructing a Lyapunov function using matrix-theoretic approach, a malaria-free equilibrium state is obtained, which is globally asymptotically stable if the control reproduction number, 𝑅𝑚<1. This means that malaria can be controlled or eradicated under such a threshold quantity, 𝑅𝑚. On the other hand, a malaria-persistence equilibrium state exists which is globally stable when 𝑅𝑚>1, using geometric theoretic method with Lozoskii …

Mathematical Modeling For Studying The Sustainability Of Plants Subject To The Stress Of Two Distinct Herbivores, B. Chen-Charpentier, M. C.A. Leite, O. Gaoue, F. B. Agusto Jun 2020

Mathematical Modeling For Studying The Sustainability Of Plants Subject To The Stress Of Two Distinct Herbivores, B. Chen-Charpentier, M. C.A. Leite, O. Gaoue, F. B. Agusto

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Viability of plants, especially endangered species, are usually affected by multiple stressors, including insects, herbivores, environmental factors and other plant species. We present new mathematical models, based on systems of ordinary differential equations, of two distinct herbivore species feeding (two stressors) on the same plant species. The new feature is the explicit functional form modeling the simultaneous feedback interactions (synergistic or additive or antagonistic) between the three species in the ecosystem. The goal is to investigate whether the coexistence of the plant and both herbivore species is possible (a sustainable system) and under which conditions sustainability is feasible. Our theoretical …

Viral Dynamics Of Delayed Ctl-Inclusive Hiv-1 Infection Model With Both Virus-To-Cell And Cell-To-Cell Transmissions, M. L. Mann Manyombe, J. Mbang, L. Nkague Nkamba, D. F. Nkoa Onana Jun 2020

Viral Dynamics Of Delayed Ctl-Inclusive Hiv-1 Infection Model With Both Virus-To-Cell And Cell-To-Cell Transmissions, M. L. Mann Manyombe, J. Mbang, L. Nkague Nkamba, D. F. Nkoa Onana

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We consider a mathematical model that describes a viral infection of HIV-1 with both virus-tocell and cell-to-cell transmission, CTL response immune and four distributed delays, describing intracellular delays and immune response delay. One of the main features of the model is that it includes a constant production rate of CTLs export from thymus, and an immune response delay. We derive the basic reproduction number and show that if the basic reproduction number is less than one, then the infection free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable; whereas, if the basic reproduction number is greater than one, then there exist a chronic …

The Impact Of Nonlinear Harvesting On A Ratio-Dependent Holling-Tanner Predator-Prey System And Optimum Harvesting, Manoj Kumar Singh, B. S. Bhadauria Jun 2020

The Impact Of Nonlinear Harvesting On A Ratio-Dependent Holling-Tanner Predator-Prey System And Optimum Harvesting, Manoj Kumar Singh, B. S. Bhadauria

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a Holling-Tanner predator-prey model with ratio-dependent functional response and non-linear prey harvesting is analyzed. The mathematical analysis of the model includes existence, uniqueness and boundedness of positive solutions. It also includes the permanence, local stability and bifurcation analysis of the model. The ratio-dependent model always has complex dynamics in the vicinity of the origin; the dynamical behaviors of the system in the vicinity of the origin have been studied by means of blow up transformation. The parametric conditions under which bionomic equilibrium point exist have been derived. Further, an optimal harvesting policy has been discussed by using …

Mathematical Modeling Of Nonlinear Blood Glucose-Insulin Dynamics With Beta Cells Effect, Gabriela Urbina, Daniel N. Riahi, Dambaru Bhatta

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We consider mathematical modeling of blood glucose-insulin regulatory system with the additional effect of the secreted insulin by the pancreatic beta cells and in the presence of an external energy input to such system. Such modeling system is investigated to determine the time-dependent nonlinear dynamics that take place by the quantities, which represent the glucose and insulin concentrations in the blood, insulin action as well as in the absence or presence of secreted insulin due to the pancreatic beta cells. Using both analytical and numerical procedures, we determine such quantities versus time for both diabetes patients and normal human and …

On The Properties Of Solutions Of A Cross-Diffusion System With Nonlinear Boundary Flux, Zafar Rakhmonov, Jasur Urunbaev, Bobur Allaberdiyev

Scientific Journal of Samarkand University

In this paper, based on a self-similar analysis and the method of standard equations, the properties of a nonlinear cross-diffusion system coupled via nonlocal boundary conditions are studied. We are investigated the qualitative properties of solutions of a nonlinear system of parabolic equations of cross-diffusion in a medium coupled with nonlinear boundary conditions. It is proved that for certain values of the numerical parameters of the nonlinear cross-diffusion system of parabolic equations coupled via nonlinear boundary conditions, they may not have global solutions in time. Based on a self-similar analysis and the principle of comparing solutions, a critical exponent of …

465— Modeling Vaccine Efficacy For Tuberculosis In A Prison Population, Kaitlyn Mundackal Apr 2020

465— Modeling Vaccine Efficacy For Tuberculosis In A Prison Population, Kaitlyn Mundackal

GREAT Day Posters

Tuberculosis is a highly contagious disease and is particularly problematic in confined communities such as prisons. I simulated how Tuberculosis moves through a prison population and tested how much vaccination effort is needed to control its spread. To explore this, I tested adding ever increasing numbers of randomly placed edges in a network and determined the size of the largest component. Afterwards, I removed edges in the model using two different methods, one illustrating if the edges were removed randomly and the other starting with prisoners that had the most connections, to simulate the effect of vaccination. My results show …

484— Modeling Social Distancing Methods And Their Effectiveness In Combating The Spread Of Ebola, Rachel Fair Apr 2020

484— Modeling Social Distancing Methods And Their Effectiveness In Combating The Spread Of Ebola, Rachel Fair

GREAT Day Posters

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a rare but severe disease that is transmitted among humans through direct-contact with, and close proximity to, infected bodily fluids. From 2014-16, West Africa experienced the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, infecting over 28,000 people, and killing over 11,000. Although the symptoms of EVD are treatable, the disease can be extremely deadly, with an average of 50% EVD cases resulting in fatality. In areas where healthcare is scarce and vaccinations are not readily available, the practices of social distancing and self-quarantining have been shown to be highly effective in combating the spread of EVD. To …

A Demographic Model Of An Endangered Florida Native Bromeliad (Tillandsia Utriculata), Zoe S. Brookover, Alexandra M. Campbell, Brian D. Christman, Sydney L. Davis, Erin N. Bodine

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

The large, long-lived, epiphytic bromeliad Tillandsia utriculata is currently listed as state-endangered in Florida due to significant population reduction from predation by an invasive weevil, Metamasius callizona. We have developed a novel demographic model of a population of T. utriculata in Myakka River State Park (MRSP) in Sarasota, Florida using a stage-structured matrix model. Analysis of the model revealed conditions for population viability over a variety of parameter scenarios. Model analysis showed that without weevil predation the minimum germination rate required for population viability is low (4–16%), and that given a viable population at structural equilibrium we would expect …

Analysis Of An Agent-Based Model For Predicting The Behavior Of Bighead Carp (Hypophthalmichthys Nobilis) Under The Influence Of Acoustic Deterrence, Craig Garzella, Joseph Gaudy, Karl R. B. Schmitt, Arezu Mansuri Feb 2020

Analysis Of An Agent-Based Model For Predicting The Behavior Of Bighead Carp (Hypophthalmichthys Nobilis) Under The Influence Of Acoustic Deterrence, Craig Garzella, Joseph Gaudy, Karl R. B. Schmitt, Arezu Mansuri

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) are an invasive, voracious, highly fecund species threatening the ecological integrity of the Great Lakes. This agent-based model and analysis explore bighead carp behavior in response to acoustic deterrence in an effort to discover properties that increase likelihood of deterrence system failure. Results indicate the most significant (p < 0.05) influences on barrier failure are the quantity of detritus and plankton behind the barrier, total number of bighead carp successfully deterred by the barrier, and number of native fishes freely moving throughout the simulation. Quantity of resources behind the barrier influence bighead carp to penetrate when populations are resource deprived. When native fish populations are low, an accumulation of phytoplankton can occur, increasing the likelihood of an algal bloom occurrence. Findings of this simulation suggest successful implementation with proper maintenance of an acoustic deterrence system has potential of abating the threat of bighead carp on ecological integrity of the Great Lakes.

Use Of Kalman Filtering In State And Parameter Estimation Of Diabetes Models, Cassidy Le Jan 2020

Use Of Kalman Filtering In State And Parameter Estimation Of Diabetes Models, Cassidy Le

HMC Senior Theses

Diabetes continues to affect many lives every year, putting those affected by it at higher risk of serious health issues. Despite many efforts, there currently is no cure for diabetes. Nevertheless, researchers continue to study diabetes in hopes of understanding the disease and how it affects people, creating mathematical models to simulate the onset and progression of diabetes. Recent research by David J. Albers, Matthew E. Levine, Andrew Stuart, Lena Mamykina, Bruce Gluckman, and George Hripcsak1 has suggested that these models can be furthered through the use of Data Assimilation, a regression method that synchronizes a model with a …

Toward Automated Region Detection & Parcellation Of Rat Brain Tissue Images, Alexandro Arnal Jan 2020

Toward Automated Region Detection & Parcellation Of Rat Brain Tissue Images, Alexandro Arnal

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

People who analyze images of biological tissue often rely on segmentation of structures as a preliminary step. In particular, laboratories studying the rat brain manually delineate brain regions to position scientific findings on a brain atlas to propose hypotheses about the rat brain, and ultimately, the human brain. Our work intersects with the preliminary step of delineating regions in images of brain tissue via computational methods.

We investigate pixel-wise classification or segmentation of brain regions using ten histological images of brain tissue sections stained for Nissl substance, and two deep learning models: U-Net and Tile2Vec. Our goal is to assess …

Mechanisms Of Value-Biased Prioritization In Fast Sensorimotor Decision Making, Kivilcim Afacan-Seref Jan 2020

Mechanisms Of Value-Biased Prioritization In Fast Sensorimotor Decision Making, Kivilcim Afacan-Seref

Dissertations and Theses

In dynamic environments, split-second sensorimotor decisions must be prioritized according to potential payoffs to maximize overall rewards. The impact of relative value on deliberative perceptual judgments has been examined extensively, but relatively little is known about value-biasing mechanisms in the common situation where physical evidence is strong but the time to act is severely limited. This research examines the behavioral and electrophysiological indices of how value biases split-second perceptual decisions and the possible mechanisms underlying the process. In prominent decision models, a noisy but statistically stationary representation of sensory evidence is integrated over time to an action-triggering bound, and value-biases …

Modeling Gene Expression With Differential Equations, Madison Kuduk Jan 2020

Modeling Gene Expression With Differential Equations, Madison Kuduk

Capstone Showcase

Gene expression is the process by which the information stored in DNA is convertedinto a functional gene product, such as protein. The two main functions that makeup the process of gene expression are transcription and translation. Transcriptionand translation are controlled by the number of mRNA and protein in the cell. Geneexpression can be represented as a system of first order differential equations for the rateof change of mRNA and proteins. These equations involve transcription, translation, degradation and feedback loops. In this paper, I investigate a system of first orderdifferential equations to model gene expression proposed by Hunt, Laplace, Miller andPham in …
