Adultery and Fidelity in the Lais of Marie de France

Using both literary and historical analysis, I will examine contrasting depictions of adultery and fidelity within the lais written by 12th-century poet Marie de France. A lai is a type of narrative poem, ranging in length from 118 to 1184 lines. Many of Marie de France’s lais follow the literary trope known as courtly love; however, the reader is encouraged to sympathize with different characters depending on the lai. In some lais, the reader …

Convergence Properties Of Solutions Of A Length-Structured Density-Dependent Model For Fish, Geigh Zollicoffer Dec 2021

Convergence Properties Of Solutions Of A Length-Structured Density-Dependent Model For Fish, Geigh Zollicoffer

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We numerically study solutions to a length-structured matrix model for fish populations in which the probability that a fish grows into the next length class is a decreasing nonlinear function of the total biomass of the population. We make conjectures about the convergence properties of solutions to this equation, and give numerical simulations which support these conjectures. We also study the distribution of biomass in the different age classes as a function of the total biomass.

(R1468) Global Analysis Of An Seirs Model For Covid-19 Capturing Saturated Incidence With Treatment Response, David A. Oluyori, Helen O. Adebayo, Ángel G.C. Pérez Dec 2021

(R1468) Global Analysis Of An Seirs Model For Covid-19 Capturing Saturated Incidence With Treatment Response, David A. Oluyori, Helen O. Adebayo, Ángel G.C. Pérez

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this work, a new SEIRS model with saturated incidence rate and piecewise linear treatment response is proposed to describe the dynamics of COVID-19. It is assumed that the treatment response is proportional to the number of infected people as long as the incidence cases are within the capacity of the healthcare system, after which the value becomes constant, when the number of confirmed cases exceeds the carrying capacity of the available medical facilities. Thus, the basic reproduction number of the model is obtained. It is proved that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number …

(R1488) Transformation Of Glucokinase Under Variable Rate Constants And Thermal Conditions: A Mathematical Model, Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday, Roohi Bhat Dec 2021

(R1488) Transformation Of Glucokinase Under Variable Rate Constants And Thermal Conditions: A Mathematical Model, Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday, Roohi Bhat

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The glucokinase (GK) in cells plays a pivotal role in the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism and acts as a sensor of glucose. It helps us to control glucose levels during fast and food intake conditions through triggering shifts in metabolism or cell functions. Various forms of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia occur due to the transformations of the gene of the Glucokinase. The mathematical modelling of enzyme dynamics is an emerging research area to serve its role in biological investigations. Thus, it is imperative to establish a mathematical model to understand the kinetics of native and denatured forms of enzyme-GK under thermal …

(R1493) Discussion On Stability And Hopf-Bifurcation Of An Infected Prey Under Refuge And Predator, Moulipriya Sarkar, Tapasi Das Dec 2021

(R1493) Discussion On Stability And Hopf-Bifurcation Of An Infected Prey Under Refuge And Predator, Moulipriya Sarkar, Tapasi Das

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The paper deals with the case of non-selective predation in a partially infected prey-predator system, where both the susceptible prey and predator follow the law of logistic growth and some preys avoid predation by hiding. The disease-free preys get infected in due course of time by a certain rate. However, the carrying capacity of the predator population is considered proportional to the sum-total of the susceptible and infected prey. The positivity and boundedness of the solutions of the system are studied and the existence of the equilibrium points and stability of the system are analyzed at these points. The effect …

(R1523) Abundant Natural Resources, Ethnic Diversity And Inclusive Growth In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Mathematical Approach, Juliet I. Adenuga, Kazeem B. Ajide, Anthonia T. Odeleye, Abayomi A. Ayoade Dec 2021

(R1523) Abundant Natural Resources, Ethnic Diversity And Inclusive Growth In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Mathematical Approach, Juliet I. Adenuga, Kazeem B. Ajide, Anthonia T. Odeleye, Abayomi A. Ayoade

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The sub-Saharan African region is blessed with abundant natural resources and diverse ethnic groups, yet the region is dominated by the largest number of poor people worldwide due to inequitable distribution of national income. Existing statistics forecast decay in the quality of lives over the years compared to the continent of Asia that shares similar history with the region. In this paper, a-five dimensional first-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations was formulated to give insight into various factors that shaped dynamics of inclusive growth in sub-Saharan Africa. The validity test was performed based on ample mathematical theorems and the model was …

(R1412) Stability And Bifurcation Of A Cholera Epidemic Model With Saturated Recovery Rate, Huda Abdul-Satar, Raid K. Naji Dec 2021

(R1412) Stability And Bifurcation Of A Cholera Epidemic Model With Saturated Recovery Rate, Huda Abdul-Satar, Raid K. Naji

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a Cholera epidemic model is proposed and studied analytically as well as numerically. It is assumed that the disease is transmitted by contact with Vibrio cholerae and infected person according to dose-response function. However, the saturated treatment function is used to describe the recovery process. Moreover, the vaccine against the disease is assumed to be utterly ineffective. The existence, uniqueness and boundedness of the solution of the proposed model are discussed. All possible equilibrium points and the basic reproduction number are determined. The local stability and persistence conditions are established. Lyapunov method and the second additive compound …

Electrohydrodynamic Simulations Of Capsule Deformation Using A Dual Time-Stepping Lattice Boltzmann Scheme, Charles Leland Armstrong Jul 2021

Electrohydrodynamic Simulations Of Capsule Deformation Using A Dual Time-Stepping Lattice Boltzmann Scheme, Charles Leland Armstrong

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Capsules are fluid-filled, elastic membranes that serve as a useful model for synthetic and biological membranes. One prominent application of capsules is their use in modeling the response of red blood cells to external forces. These models can be used to study the cell’s material properties and can also assist in the development of diagnostic equipment. In this work we develop a three dimensional model for numerical simulations of red blood cells under the combined influence of hydrodynamic and electrical forces. The red blood cell is modeled as a biconcave-shaped capsule suspended in an ambient fluid domain. Cell deformation occurs …

Grizzly Bears Mortalities And The Survival Of The Species, Courtney Swanson Jun 2021

Grizzly Bears Mortalities And The Survival Of The Species, Courtney Swanson

Senior Seminars and Capstones

In this paper we aim to understand what is happening in the grizzly bear population mortalities from the year 2010 to 2020. We are performing Classical and Regression Tree (CART) methods and Correspondence Analysis on data provided by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). We found certain variables in the data set to be important through CART methods. Correspondence Analysis then allowed us to compare these variables to determine their relationships and association to one another. Most of the grizzly bear deaths are human caused and mainly over land and resources such as food and habitat. This aligns with some of …

Qualitative Analysis Of A Modified Leslie-Gower Predator-Prey Model With Weak Allee Effect Ii, Manoj K. Singh, B. S. Bhadauria Jun 2021

Qualitative Analysis Of A Modified Leslie-Gower Predator-Prey Model With Weak Allee Effect Ii, Manoj K. Singh, B. S. Bhadauria

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The article aims to study a modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey model with Allee effect II, affecting the functional response with the assumption that the extent to which the environment provides protection to both predator and prey is the same. The model has been studied analytically as well as numerically, including stability and bifurcation analysis. Compared with the predator-prey model without Allee effect, it is found that the weak Allee effect II can bring rich and complicated dynamics, such as the model undergoes to a series of bifurcations (Homoclinic, Hopf, Saddle-node and Bogdanov-Takens). The existence of Hopf bifurcation has been shown for …

Covid-19 Modeling With Caution In Relaxing Control Measures And Possibilities Of Several Peaks In Cameroon, S. Y. Tchoumi, Y. T. Kouakep, D. J. Fotsa Mbogne, J. C. Kamgang, V. C. Kamla, D. Bekolle Jun 2021

Covid-19 Modeling With Caution In Relaxing Control Measures And Possibilities Of Several Peaks In Cameroon, S. Y. Tchoumi, Y. T. Kouakep, D. J. Fotsa Mbogne, J. C. Kamgang, V. C. Kamla, D. Bekolle

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We construct a new model for the comprehension of the Covid-19 dynamics in Cameroon. We present the basic reproduction number and perform some numerical analysis on the possible outcomes of the epidemic. The major results are the possibilities to have several peaks before the end of the first outbreak for an uniform strategy, and the danger to have a severe peak after the adoption of a careless strategy of barrier anti-Covid-19 measures that follow a good containment period.

Global Stability Of Generalized Within-Host Chikungunya Virus Dynamics Models, Taofeek O. Alade, Afeez Abidemi, Cemil Tunç, Shafeek A. Ghaleb Jun 2021

Global Stability Of Generalized Within-Host Chikungunya Virus Dynamics Models, Taofeek O. Alade, Afeez Abidemi, Cemil Tunç, Shafeek A. Ghaleb

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper proposes two models of a general nonlinear within-host Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) dynamics. The production, incidence, proliferation and removal rates of all compartments are modeled by general nonlinear functions that satisfy a set of reasonable conditions. The second model takes into consideration two forms of infected host cells: (i) latently infected cells which do not produce the CHIKV, (ii) actively infected cells which generate the CHIKV particles. We show that all the solutions of the models are nonnegative and bounded. The global stability of the steady states of the models is proven by applying Lyapunov method and LaSalle’s invariance …

An Examination Of Fontan Circulation Using Differential Equation Models And Numerical Methods, Vanessa Maybruck May 2021

An Examination Of Fontan Circulation Using Differential Equation Models And Numerical Methods, Vanessa Maybruck

Honors Student Research

Certain congenital heart defects can lead to the development of only a single pumping chamber, or ventricle, in the heart instead of the usual two ventricles. Individuals with this defect undergo a corrective, three-part surgery, the third step of which is the Fontan procedure, but as the patients age, their cardiovascular health will likely deteriorate. Using computational fluid dynamics and differential equations, Fontan circulation can be modeled to investigate why the procedure fails and how Fontan failure can be maximally prevented. Borrowing from well-established literature on RC circuits, the differential equation models simulate systemic blood flow in a piecewise, switch-like …

Gene Selection And Classification In High-Throughput Biological Data With Integrated Machine Learning Algorithms And Bioinformatics Approaches, Abhijeet R Patil May 2021

Gene Selection And Classification In High-Throughput Biological Data With Integrated Machine Learning Algorithms And Bioinformatics Approaches, Abhijeet R Patil

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

With the rise of high throughput technologies in biomedical research, large volumes of expression profiling, methylation profiling, and RNA-sequencing data are being generated. These high-dimensional data have large number of features with small number of samples, a characteristic called the "curse of dimensionality." The selection of optimal features, which largely affects the performance of classification algorithms in machine learning models, has led to challenging problems in bioinformatics analyses of such high-dimensional datasets. In this work, I focus on the design of two-stage frameworks of feature selection and classification and their applications in multiple sets of colorectal cancer data. The first …

Kleptoparasitic Hawk-Dove Games, Isabella H. Evans-Riester, Chasity T. Kay, Karina L. Ortiz-Suarez, Jan Rychtář, Dewey Taylor Apr 2021

Kleptoparasitic Hawk-Dove Games, Isabella H. Evans-Riester, Chasity T. Kay, Karina L. Ortiz-Suarez, Jan Rychtář, Dewey Taylor

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

The Hawk-Dove game is a classical game-theoretical model of potentially aggressive animal conflicts. In this paper, we apply game theory to a population of foraging animals that may engage in stealing food from one another. We assume that the population is composed of two types of individuals, Hawks and Doves. Hawks try to escalate encounters into aggressive contests while Doves engage in non-aggressive displays between themselves or concede to aggressive Hawks. The fitness of each type depends upon various natural parameters, such as food density, the mean handling time of a food item, as well as the mean times of …

Anticipation Induces Polarized Collective Motion In Attraction Based Models, Daniel Strömbom, Alice Antia Mar 2021

Anticipation Induces Polarized Collective Motion In Attraction Based Models, Daniel Strömbom, Alice Antia

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

Moving animal groups are prime examples of natural complex systems. In most models of such systems each individual updates its heading based on the current positions and headings of its neighbors. However, recently, a number of models where the heading update instead is based on the future anticipated positions/headings of the neighbors have been published. Collectively these studies have established that including anticipation may have drastically different effects in different models. In particular, anticipation inhibits polarization in alignment-based models and in one alignment-free model, but promotes polarization in another alignment-free model. Indicating that our understanding of how anticipation affects the …

A Dynamic Energy Budget Model Of Ornate Box Turtle Shell Growth, Tyler Skorczewski, Brandon Andersen Mar 2021

A Dynamic Energy Budget Model Of Ornate Box Turtle Shell Growth, Tyler Skorczewski, Brandon Andersen

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Many aspects of box turtle development may depend on size rather than age. Notable examples include sexual maturity and the development of the fully closing hinge in the shell that allows box turtles to completely hide in their shells. Thus, it is important to understand how turtles grow in order to have a complete understanding of turtle biology. Previous studies show that turtle shell growth behaves in a logistic manner. These studies use functional models that fit the data well but do little to explain mechanisms. In this work we use the ideas found in dynamic energy budget theory to …

Flattening The Curve: The Effects Of Intervention Strategies During Covid-19, Kelly A. Reagan, Rachel J. Pryor, Gonzalo M. Bearman, David M. Chan Mar 2021

Flattening The Curve: The Effects Of Intervention Strategies During Covid-19, Kelly A. Reagan, Rachel J. Pryor, Gonzalo M. Bearman, David M. Chan

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

COVID-19 has plagued countries worldwide due to its infectious nature. Social distancing and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) are two main strategies employed to prevent its spread. A SIR model with a time-dependent transmission rate is implemented to examine the effect of social distancing and PPE use in hospitals. These strategies’ effect on the size and timing of the peak number of infectious individuals are examined as well as the total number of individuals infected by the epidemic. The effect on the epidemic of when social distancing is relaxed is also examined. Overall, social distancing was shown to …

A Computational Investigation Of The Biophysical Mechanisms Underlying Thermotaxis In The Afd Neurons Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Zachary Mobille Mar 2021

A Computational Investigation Of The Biophysical Mechanisms Underlying Thermotaxis In The Afd Neurons Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Zachary Mobille

Theses and Dissertations

Thermotaxis in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is studied at the cellular scale of the amphid finger-like ciliated (AFD) neurons, which have previously been shown to be essential for thermoreception. The voltage and calcium signals of AFD during temperature stimuli are described with ordinary differential equations. The primary calcium model is a modified version of that published by Kuramochi and Doi in 2017 to explain the calcium responses of the chemosensitive amphid single-ciliated right (ASER) neuron to fluctuations in extracellular salt concentration. To account for the effects of temperature, changes to the stimuli conditions under which inactivation takes place …

The Reemergence Of Eradicated Disease Due To Ecological Impact Of Climate Change, Claudia Kolakowski Feb 2021

The Reemergence Of Eradicated Disease Due To Ecological Impact Of Climate Change, Claudia Kolakowski

Theses and Dissertations

Global warming is radically changing aspects of the Earth. As scientists continue to research the effects, the ramifications of melting permafrost is coming to light. We build off of a previously existing Anthrax model in the hopes to include climate change as a factor in Anthrax spread. Chapter II develops a simplified version of an Anthrax model. Parameters for the model are found by using previous research and eigenvalues are analyzed in order to find thresholds and equilibria. Chapter III consider the general solutions of the model through eigenvalues and eigenvectors. This model is then extended to include a parameter …
