This paper studies the applicability of Kalman filtering approaches for network wide traveler origin-destination estimation from link traffic volumes. The paper evaluates the modeling assumptions of the Kalman filters and examines the implications of such assumptions.

A Semi-empirical model has been developed on the basis of Kolmogoroff's theory of isotropic turbulence to determine the minimum drawdown speed for floating solids in a mechanically agitated vessel. An adjustable pa- rameter in the model is found to be afunction of impeller type and position in a vessel. A simplified representation of macroscopicflow pattern, rep- resenting the circulation flow in a vessel depending on impeller pumping characteristic is developed to account for recirculation pattern.

The problem of speech enhancement presents many obstacles in the speech processing field. This thesis develops several speech de-noising systems that can be used in the time, fourier, and wavelet domains. We present two thresholding techniques soft and hard. The application of these thresholding techniques to noisy speech data is discussed. The combination of both wavelets and the Fourier domains with noisy phase restoration proves to yield the best results in terms of intelligibility. Informal listening tests were conducted in order to compare the effects and differences between the speech de-noising systems.

Multirate systems, which find application in the design and analysis of filter banks, are demonstrated to also be useful as a computational paradigm. It is shown that any problem which can be expressed a set of vector-vector, matrix-vector or matrix-matrix operations can be recast using multirate. This means all of numerical linear algebra can be recast using multirate as the underlying computational paradigm. As a non-trivial example, the multirate computational paradigm is applied to the problem of Generalized Discrete Time- Frequency Distributions GDTFD to create a new family of fast algorithms. Boresight Error (BSE), defined as the angular deviation between the true position and the apparent position of a target as indicated by a radar, is an important figure of merit for a tracking radar. A significant contributor to system BSE is the protective radome. The multiresolution analysis (MRA) developed by Mallat and Meyer and further discussed by Daubechies is a useful tool in the analysis of sampled signals such as images and speech. This thesis develops the theory and implementation of a rational-resolution analysis (RRA) as an extension of the dyadic MRA for arbitrary rational dilation factors. We present a method to calculate families of compactly-supported scaling functions and wavelets based on arbitrary integer dilation factors and provide examples. The perfect- reconstruction properties of the RRA are discussed and it is demonstrated that the compactly-supported scaling functions and wavelets do not yield perfect- reconstruction. …

CAD is becoming more widely accepted in the design and analysis of control systems. A program has been developed for analyzing single-input single-output linear time-invariant control system. The application of the progranl for frequency domain design of cascaded phase lead and phase lag coinpensators is briefly discussed. Two examples to illustrate the program are presented.

This thesis discusses the use of the multiresolution representation and Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural networks to segment both FLIR and SAR imagery. The multiresolution approximation coefficients are used as features into the RBF network which learns to distinguish between different cultural and natural regions or objects. The wavelets used are Mallat's spline wavelet and Daubechies' compactly supported wavelets. Additionally, this thesis provides an explanation of wavelets in a tutorial manner. It introduces wavelet theory and discusses two different approaches to generating the multiresolution or wavelet representation.

The mean return time to a state for a Markov chain representing N off-hook telephone conversations can be obtained by using ergodic flow rates [1] or renewal theory [2]. In this paper it is shown that the same result may be obtained by using no more knowledge of stochastic processes than the solution of time-homogeneous Chapman-Kolmogorov equations.
