In this thesis the Double Pendulum Inverted on a Cart (DPIC) system is modeled using the Euler-Lagrange equation for the chosen Lagrangian, giving a second-order nonlinear system. This system can be approximated by a linear first-order system in which linear control theory can be used. The important definitions and theorems of linear control theory are stated and proved to allow them to be utilized on a linear version of the DPIC system. Piezoelectric materials have the unique ability to convert electrical energy to mechanical vibrations and vice versa. This project takes a stab to develop a reliable computational tool to simulate the vibration control of a novel “partial differential equation” model for a piezoelectric device, which is designed by integrating electric conducting piezoelectric layers constraining a viscoelastic layer to provide an active and lightweight intelligent structure. Controlling unwanted vibrations on piezoelectric devices (or harvesting energy from ambient vibrations) through piezoelectric layers has been the major focus in cutting-edge engineering applications such as ultrasonic welders and inchworms. In this paper we survey and bring together several approaches to obtaining inner functions for Toeplitz operators. These approaches include the classical definition, the Wold decomposition, the operator-valued Poisson Integral, and Clark measures. We then extend these notions somewhat to inner functions on model spaces. Along the way we present some novel examples.

The theory of beams and plates has been long established due to works spanning many fields, and has been explored through many investigations of beam and plate mechanics, controls, stability, and the well-posedness of systems of equations governing the motions of plates and beams. Additionally, recent investigations of flutter phenomena by Dowell, Webster et al. have reignited interest into the mechanics and stability of nonlinear beams. This paper studies the impulse control of a general Markov process under the average (or ergodic) cost when the impulse instants are restricted to be the arrival times of an exogenous process, and this restriction is referred to as a constraint. A detailed setting is described, a characterization of the optimal cost is obtained as a solution of an HJB equation, and an optimal impulse control is identified.

We study a class of steering control problems for free-moving particles tracking a curve in the plane and also in a three-dimensional environment, which are central problems in robotics. In the two-dimensional case, we provide adaptive controllers for curve tracking under unknown curvatures and control uncertainty. The system dynamics include a nonlinear dependence on the curvature, and are coupled with an estimator for the unknown curvature to form the augmented error dynamics. This nonlinear dependence puts our curvature identification objective outside the scope of existing adaptive tracking and parameter identification results that were limited to cases where the unknown parameters …

We investigate masked financial instability caused by wealth inequality. When an economic sector is decomposed into two subsectors that possess a severe wealth inequality, the sector in entirety can look financially stable while the two subsectors possess extreme financially instabilities of opposite nature, one from excessive equity, the other from lack thereof. The unstable subsector can result in further financial distress and even trigger a financial crisis. The market instability indicator, an early warning system derived from dynamical systems applied to agent-based models, is used to analyze the subsectoral financial instabilities. We provide new methods in mathematical control theory for two significant classes of control systems with time delays, based on backstepping and sequential prediction. Our bounded backstepping results ensure global asymptotic stability for partially linear systems with an arbitrarily large number of integrators. We also build sequential predictors for time-varying linear systems with time-varying delays in the control, sampling in the control, and time-varying measurement delays. Our bounded backstepping results are novel because of their use of converging-input-converging-state conditions, which make it possible to solve feedback stabilization problems under input delays and under boundedness conditions on the feedback control. This paper addresses an optimal hybrid control problem in discrete-time with Borel state and action spaces. By hybrid we mean that the evolution of the state of the system may undergo deep changes according to structural modifications of the dynamic. Such modifications occur either by the position of the state or by means of the controller's actions. The optimality criterion is of a long-run ratio-average (or ratio-ergodic) type. We provide the existence of optimal average policies for this hybrid control problem by analyzing an associated dynamic programming equation. This study considers a deterministic model of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) incorporating contact tracing and quarantine as interventions. The model analyze the existence and stability of Disease-Free Equilibrium (DFE) and Endemic Equilibrium (EE) states. The local stability of EE is established using centre manifold theorem. The global stability of the two equilibrium states are obtained by constructing the Lyapunov function. Numerical simulations are carried out to examine the impact of contact tracing and quarantine measures on the transmission dynamics of EVD. The result indicates that EVD could be eliminated faster when contact tracing and quarantine measures are implemented together.

A discrete-time hybrid control model with Borel state and action spaces is introduced. In this type of models, the dynamic of the system is composed by two sub-dynamics affecting the evolution of the state; one is of a standard-type that runs almost every time and another is of a special-type that is active under special circumstances. Optimal control is a control method which provides inputs that minimize a performance index subject to state or input constraints [58]. The existing solutions for finding the exact optimal control solution such as Pontryagin’s minimum principle and dynamic programming suffer from curse of dimensionality in high order dynamical systems. One remedy for this problem is finding near optimal solution instead of the exact optimal solution to avoid curse of dimensionality [31]. This paper studies the migration of double imaginary roots of the systems’ characteristic equation when two parameters are subjected to small deviations. The proposed approach covers a wide range of models. Under the least degeneracy assumptions, we found that the local stability crossing curve has a cusp at the point that corresponds to the double root, and it divides the neighborhood of this point into an S-sector and a G-sector. When the parameters move into the G-sector, one of the roots moves to the right halfplane, and the other moves to the left half-plane. When the parameters move into the …

Centralized communication-based control is one of the main methods that can be implemented to achieve autonomous advanced energy management capabilities in DC microgrids. However, its major limitation is the fact that communication bandwidth and computation resources are limited in practical applications. In Dunn County, Wisconsin the lakes suffer from algae blooms due to excess phosphorus runoff. A coupled bio-economic model is studied with the intent of finding the optimal level of phosphorus that should be allowed into the lake depending on certain biologic and economic parameters. We model the algae and phosphorus concentration in the lake over time based off the phosphorus input. Community welfare is modeled by comparing the costs and benefits of phosphorus fertilizer. Improved knowledge of the magnetic field dependent flow properties of nanoparticle-based magnetic fluids is critical to the design of biomedical applications, including drug delivery and cell sorting. To probe the rheology of ferrofluid on a sub-millimeter scale, we examine the paths of 550 μm diameter glass spheres falling due to gravity in dilute ferrofluid, imposing a uniform magnetic field at an angle with respect to the vertical. Visualization of the spheres’ trajectories is achieved using high resolution X-ray phase-contrast imaging, allowing measurement of a terminal velocity while simultaneously revealing the formation of an array of long thread-like accumulations of magnetic …

In this paper, we proposed hybrid conjugate gradient method using the convex combination of FR and PRP conjugate gradient methods for solving Large-scale symmetric nonlinear equations via Andrei approach with nonmonotone line search. Logical formula for obtaining the convex parameter using Newton and our proposed directions was also proposed. Under appropriate conditions global convergence was established. Reported numerical results show that the proposed method is very promising.

Our old outstanding open Problem 3.8 mentioned below is the main object of this paper.
