Structural Geology Of Eastern Part Of The Smithfield Quadrangle, Utah, Cheryl Leora Galloway

The mapped area represents the eastern three-fourths of the Smithfield quadrangle, Utah. This quadrangle is located in the central part of northern Utah about 8.6 miles south of the Utah-Idaho State Line. The Bear River Range, along the eastern margin of the quadrangle, consists of stratigraphic units ranging in age from Precambrian to Devonian. The Salt Lake Formation of Tertiary age rests unconformably on Precambrian quartzite and Paleozoic units along the western side of the range. The Lake Bonneville Group overlaps Cambrian rocks in the southern part of the area and overlaps the Salt Lake Formation in the northern part. …

The 1963 Utah State Legislature authorized the Utah Water and Power Board (now the Utah Division of Water Resources) to develop a state water plan in order to give coordination and direction to the activities of all state and federal agencies concerned with Utah's water resources. To facilitate the development of this plan, a proposal was submitted through the State Planning Coordinator in the Governor's Office to the Urban Renewal Administration of the Housing and Home Finance Agency. Rolette County contains approximately 942 square miles in north central North Dakota (Tps. 159-164 N., Rs. 69-73 W.) adjacent to the Canadian border. It includes the southeastern part of the Turtle Mountains and part of the glacial Lake Souris basin. Basic lithologies recognized in the surface sediments were bedded clay, silt, sand, and gravel; and three types of non-bedded diamicton. These were combined and, with bedding characteristics and organic content, formed 15 practical field mapping units. Geologically significant scarps and hill slopes were also mapped. The data collected is shown at a scale of 1 inch to 2 miles. The …

Seven Cambrian formations and two Ordovician formations, with a total thickness of 9,000 feet, crop out west of the Paris thrust fault and comprise the upper plate. Slices of three Ordovician formations, one Silurian formation, two Mississippian formations, and one formation each of Pennsylvanian and Permian age comprise the low plate. Mesozoic units are not present in the mapped area. Two Tertiary formations and unconsolidated Quaternary deposits are also present.

The major structural feature is the Paris thrust fault which extends north-south throughout the area. It was active during the Laramide orogeny. This fault involved eastward movement and placed Cambrian …

"A portion of the Precambrian rocks located in the vicinity of Eminence, Missouri are studied and describes. These rocks are exposed as rhyolitic knobs protruding through hills of Ordovician sediments. The Precambrian rocks under study consist principally of rhyolite, with smaller amounts of tuff and creccis. The rhyolite is a potash rhyolite porphyry, both flow banded and unbanded, with phenocrysts of kaolinized orthoclase in a matrix of quartz and orthoclase. The tuffs contain devitrified glass shards and occasional ash balls such as those exhibited at Cott Mountain. A stratigraphic sequence was determined with the oldest rocks to the south at …

Two areas along the Blacksmith Fork River, in the Bear River Range southeast of Logan, Utah, were studied as sites for a storage dam and reservoir. An earth dam, 150-200 feet high, and a reservoir of 15,000-20,000 acre-feet are contemplated by the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of Interior.

The lower area, located about 7 miles east of the mountain front, involves two possible dam sites on limestone. Thick overburden is present in the canyon bottom and on the right abutments. "Detailed geologic mapping of the Cotter-Jefferson City formational contact in the Thayer, Missouri area demonstrates the feasibility of using this contact. This mapping also delineates significant faulting in the area.

The stratigraphy of the Cotter and Jefferson City formations in the Thayer area has been studied to find a mappable contact between the two formations. The contact was mapped in this area by using marker beds, the stratigraphic positions of which were determined by applying insoluble residue techniques to outcrop sections. The west-central part of the Malad Range is located in south-eastern Idaho. This area was the site of thick marine deposition in the early Paleozoic period. In the Tertiary and Quaternary periods continental deposition occurred, covering the Paleozoic rocks. Quartzite and shale units of the Brigham Quartzite are found near the base of the Cambrian section. Carbonate with shale interbeds is found in the middle and late Cambrian units. Limestone and silty limestone are found in the early and middle Ordovician time overlain by the middle Ordovician Swan Peak Quartzite. The Laketown Dolomite includes units of late Ordovician and Silurian …

The Tongue River-Sentirel Butte contact has been regarded by many workers as a vague color boundary of minor extent within a relatively homogeneous sequence of Paleocene strata. Consequently, the Sentinel Butte has come to be regarded as a subordinate unit of the ”Tongue River Formation. As defined in report, the contact is a distinctive horizon between two discrete lithogenetic units. "Current terminology in the field of lineaments and linears (lineations) analysis was reviewed and quantitative definitions of the common terms offered. A general classification of lineations is herein proposed. Characteristics of drainage and airphoto lineations were reviewed and the procedure used in their analysis discussed.

An area about 1880 square miles was analyzed for lineations based on drainage networks and the resulting patterns showed preferred orientation. These drainage lineations were later compared with the airphoto lineations of the same area and a limited degree of similarity was observed.

The Las Vegas 15-minute quadrangle, located in the south part of the state of Nevada, includes about 240 square miles in and around the city of Las Vegas; it is in the basin and range province. The quadrangle includes a broad valley floor that was once a lake bottom, a bordering area of badlands and rolling hills developed in Tertiary and Quaternary deposits, an outer marginal area of alluvial fans, and the surrounding mountains.

Griggs County, situated in the Western Lake section of the Central Lowland province, covers an area of 720 square miles in east-central North Dakota. The surface of the county is mantled with three, or possibly four Pleistocene drift sheets, separated by outwash deposits. These drift sheets lie unconformably on the Cretaceous Pierre Shale which is exposed in the Sheyenne River valley and the Binford Hills. Because the drift sheets have similar lithologic and physical characteristics, and are all late Wisconsin in age, they fulfill the requirements for a lithostratigraphic unit and are being considered for designation as part of the …

Jurassic rocks in the southern two-thirds of North Dakota consist mainly of limestone, shale, anhydrite, and salt of the Piper Formation; shaly limestone, calcareous and non-calcareous shales of the Rierden Formation; shale and sandstone of the Swift Formation; and, at the top, non-marine shale and local sandstones of the Morrison Formation.

The units generally are conformable in the deep part of the Williston Basin, and are unconformable near the edge of the basin in eastern North Dakota. The Sperati Point Quadrangle is in McKenzie County, northwestern North Dakota, about 30 miles south-southwest of Watford City, North Dakota. The quadrangle is bounded by Ts. 146-148 N., Rs. 100- 101 W., and encompasses an area of about: 54 square miles. The topography consists of weakly dissected upland plains and, adjacent to the Little Missouri River and tributaries, well dissected, well drained, badland areas characterized by extensive slumping. "The carbonate rocks of the Mississippian Ste. Genevieve Formation were studied megascopically in four quarries--Cave in Rock, Franklin, Three Rivers, and Fredonia Valley--within a small area of the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district and in a drill-core from the Cave in Rock Quarry. The rocks were studied microscopically in seventy-four thin sections prepared from samples from the quarries and the drill-core. The Ste. Genevieve Formation is typically an extremely oolitic, fragmentally fossiliferous limestone which is very light gray to white. K₂O/Na₂O Content As A Possible Index To The Chronological Sequence Of Some Precambrian Igneous Rocks Of Missouri, Erwin Joseph Mantei

"Flame photometric analyses for K₂O and Na₂O were run on 31 samples of the Precambrian igneous rocks of Missouri. Samples were collected from the field, physically prepared and dissolved by a standard method and a modified standard method of rapid silicate analyses. The K₂O, Na₂O values obtained are averages between two methods of analyses. The modified method reduces by 80% the time required to chemically digest a rock sample. The results for both methods are not significantly different. Curtin and Company Advanced Flame Photometer was used.

The topography of northern Kidder County is due almost entirely to glacial deposition. This are is covered with glacial drift up to a thickness of at least 269 feet which was deposited during Wisconsin ice advances. Seventy-five percent of the area has stagnation moraine which typically exhibits knob-and-kettle topography, has high local relief with no linear trends, and which was deposited after the ice became stagnant. Many kames and eskers were formed contemporaneously with stagnation moraine. Wellsville Mountain is 10 miles west of Logan, Utah, at the northern extremity of the Wasatch Range. Paleozoic rocks form a northeast-dipping homocline bounded in part by northwest-trending high-angle faults and cut by a series of northeast-trending high-angle faults. A major transverse fault, with a stratigraphic displacement of 4,500 feet, divides the mountain into two distinct blocks.

The rock units of the area are comparable to those of the Logan quadrangle immediately to the east. Pre-Cambrian rocks crop out in Box Elder Canyon, just east of Brigham City, and are overlain by at least 20,000 feet of northeast-dipping Paleozoic rocks …

"Purpose and Scope: The purpose of this study is to determine if it is possible to detect buried Precambrian igneous hills in Wayne County and the larger part of Reynolds County in southeast Missouri by the use of aerial photo drainage pattern analysis.

The St. Francis Mountains are located in southeast Missouri. They form a part of the Precambrian basement complex, and have been exposed at the surface by the erosion of the lower Paleozoic sediments which covered them.
