A Recycling Proposal For The Vashon Island School District, John Turner Green Jan 1990

A Recycling Proposal For The Vashon Island School District, John Turner Green

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify a process by which the Vashon Island School District could reduce its waste stream and involve and educate students in an environmental ethic that actively seeks to reduce and recycle wastes. A search of the general and educational literature was made. An extensive research of state and local agencies helped to identify appropriate goals and actions for the Vashon School District. The proposal calls for seven specific actions to be taken.

The New Generation Of Computer Literacy, J. Paul Myers Jr. Feb 1989

The New Generation Of Computer Literacy, J. Paul Myers Jr.

Computer Science Faculty Research

A tremendous mismatch is developing between two of the most critical components of any computer literacy course: the textbooks and the students. We are encountering a "new generation" of students (literally as well as figuratively!) who are much better acquainted with computer usage than their earlier counterparts. Yet many textbooks with increasing emphasis in those same computer tools continue to appear. There are signs of a coming change in that a few authors and publishers apparently are becoming aware of the need for innovations in texts for non-scientists. These textbooks open the door for a new orientation to principles in …

An Investigation Into The Use Of Prolog For Chinese-English Translation, J. W. L. Millar Jan 1989

An Investigation Into The Use Of Prolog For Chinese-English Translation, J. W. L. Millar

Research outputs pre 2011

In order to undertake machine translation from Chinese to English, it is necessary to accomplish three tasks. Firstly, the Chinese characters need to be handled on the computer system in use - in this case an IBM PC/XT. Secondly, the grammar for the language has to be represented and here Prolog has been used with a Definite Clause Grammar. Finally, the lexicon must be stored in a manner that facilitates efficient retrieval. Arity Prolog provides a hash table that achieves this task. This report describes the current state of a project aimed at producing a Chinese English machine translation system.

Implementing Educational Software And Evaluating Its Academic Effectiveness: Part Ii, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger Oct 1988

Implementing Educational Software And Evaluating Its Academic Effectiveness: Part Ii, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

In Part I, published last month, we presented a successful classroom implementation plan for integrating educational software into elementary school classrooms. Implementing educational software successfully into classrooms is an essential prerequisite to achieving the second goal of the present research-evaluating how much students learned by using specific software programs. In Part II, we will measure how effective eight software programs were at teaching fifth grade students new fraction concepts and spelling words. In addition, we will examine the validity of teacher and student software ratings based on the effectiveness of each program.

Implementing Educational Software And Evaluating Its Academic Effectiveness: Part I, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Two major obstacles are responsible for the delay in getting good educational software into schools. First, software implementation is a complex process that many schools are simply not prepared to undertake. Second, there is very little empirical research available on the specific factors that make educational software effective, leaving it extremely difficult to separate good from poor quality software. We will describe a basic plan for implementing educational software into classrooms, incorporating a research design that permits educational researchers to measure the effectiveness of the software. Part I of this series of two articles presents a basic plan for implementing …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Poverty, Inequality And Consumer Behaviour: The Case Of The Schedule Casts And Tribes Of Karnataka., Shailaja Raghuprasad Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The concept of growth with social justice is basic to the philosophy of development underlying Indian economic Planning. This philosophy is reflected in our former Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi's foreword to the sixth Plan (1980-85) document where she wrote, Economic Growth must be balanced, it must ensure self - reliance, stability and social justice. All sections should be assured that there will be no discrimination'.It is with those weaker sections - rather a segment of them that this study is concerned, Our study is an attempt to look closely at the levels of living and the consumer behaviour of …

Do We Really Know What Makes Educational Software Effective? A Call For Empirical Research On Effectiveness, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger Nov 1986

Do We Really Know What Makes Educational Software Effective? A Call For Empirical Research On Effectiveness, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Empirical information on specific factors that make educational software effective in reaching instructional objectives would be of considerable value. The authors describe the current state of evaluation research with educational software and discuss how popular software review methods fall short of meeting our need to know how well specific programs work.
