Images of the retina acquired using optical coherence tomography (OCT) often suffer from intensity inhomogeneity problems that degrade both the quality of the images and the performance of automated algorithms utilized to measure structural changes. This intensity variation has many causes, including off-axis acquisition, signal attenuation, multi-frame averaging, and vignetting, making it difficult to correct the data in a fundamental way. This paper presents a method for inhomogeneity correction by acting to reduce the variability of intensities within each layer. In particular, the N3 algorithm, which is popular in neuroimage analysis, is adapted to work for OCT data. N3 works …

This article has two main objectives: one is to describe some extensions of an adaptive Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) method of the form previously proposed by the first and third authors, and a second one is to present a new software framework, named BootCMatch, which implements all the components needed to build and apply the described adaptive AMG both as a stand-alone solver and as a preconditioner in a Krylov method. The adaptive AMG presented is meant to handle general symmetric and positive definite (SPD) sparse linear systems, without assuming any a priori information of the problem and its origin; the …

Interpreting Long Chain N-Alkyl Lipids In Lake Sediments: A Critical Evaluation Of Their Sources And Isotope Signals, Hong Yang, Qin Leng, Katelynn Howard, Kai-Lou Yue
Science and Technology Department Faculty Conference Proceedings
Stable carbon and hydrogen isotopic values of n-alkyl lipids extracted from lake sediments have been widely used for the reconstruction of ancient vegetation, climate, altitude, hydrology, etc. Compound-specific isotope analysis has taken the advantage of source-specific environmental signals from both autochthonous and allochthonous lipids, assuming that long chain n-alkyl lipids are primary derived from terrestrial plants. In recent years, substantial progresses have been made toward lipids produced by lacustrine macrophytes (aquatic plants and macro-algae) regarding their abundance, metabolism, chain length distribution, and isotope values.
Accumulating evidence indicates that long chain (C26– C31) n-alkyl lipids in lacustrine sediments are derived from …

Ultrafast lattice deformation of tens to hundreds of nanometer thick metallic crystals, after femtosecond laser excitation, was measured directly using 8.04 keV subpicosecond x-ray and 59 keV femtosecond electron pulses. Coherent phonons were generated in both single crystal and polycrystalline films. Lattice compression was observed within the first few picoseconds after laser irradiation in single crystal aluminum, which was attributed to the generation of a blast force and the propagation of elastic waves. The different time scales of lattice heating for tens and hundreds nanometer thick films are clearly distinguished by electron and x-ray pulse diffraction. The electron and lattice …

Nb3Sn is a potential candidate for surface material of SRF cavities since it can enable the cavity to operate at higher temperatures with high quality factor and at an increased accelerating gradient. Nb-Sn films were deposited using magnetron sputtering of individual Nb and Sn targets onto Nb and sapphire substrates. The as-deposited films were annealed at 1200 °C for 3 hours. The films were characterized for their structure by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), morphology by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and composition by Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The …

Dynamic Output Feedback Invariants Of Full Relative Degree Nonlinear Siso Systems, W. Steven Gray, Luis A. Duffaut Espinosa
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The goal of this paper is to explicitly describe invariants of a plant described by a Chen--Fliess series under a class of dynamic output feedback laws using earlier work by the authors on feedback transformation groups. The main result requires the rather strong assumption that the plant has a generating series with both finite Lie rank and full relative degree. In which case, there is no loss of generality in working with state space realizations of the plant. An additional genericness assumption regarding the normal form of the plant is also required, but as shown by the examples, this condition …

Deep Recurrent Learning For Efficient Image Recognition Using Small Data, Mahbubul Alam
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Recognition is fundamental yet open and challenging problem in computer vision. Recognition involves the detection and interpretation of complex shapes of objects or persons from previous encounters or knowledge. Biological systems are considered as the most powerful, robust and generalized recognition models. The recent success of learning based mathematical models known as artificial neural networks, especially deep neural networks, have propelled researchers to utilize such architectures for developing bio-inspired computational recognition models. However, the computational complexity of these models increases proportionally to the challenges posed by the recognition problem, and more importantly, these models require a large amount of data …
Approximation Of Quantiles Of Rank Test Statistics Using Almost Sure Limit Theorems, Mark Ledbetter
Approximation Of Quantiles Of Rank Test Statistics Using Almost Sure Limit Theorems, Mark Ledbetter
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
There are many problems in statistics where the analysis is based on asymptotic distributions. In some cases, the asymptotic distribution is in an open form or is intractable. One possible solution is the logarithmic quantile estimation (LQE) method introduced by Thangavelu (2005) for rank tests and Fridline (2010) for the correlation coefficient. LQE is derived from an almost sure version of the central limit theorem using the results of Berkes and Csaki (2001), and it estimates the quantiles of a test statistic using only the data. To date, LQE has been used in only a few applications. We extend the …

Examining The Response Of The Martian Atmosphere To Increases In Different Portions Of The Electromagnetic Spectrum During Solar Flares, Bradley R. Kumm
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This report describes the methods used to examine how the Martian atmosphere responds to increases in different portions of the electromagnetic spectrum during solar flares. On March 24, 2015 the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission satellite made measurements of the atmosphere and solar irradiance during a solar flare. These measurements were used by the Flare Irradiance Spectral Model (FISM) to generate solar flux values for 59 wavelength bins describing flare event. The solar flux values at different wavelength bins were scaled by different amounts and input into the Mars Global Ionosphere Thermosphere Model (M-GITM) to create 16 distinct …
Range Expansion Of Tick Disease Vectors In North America: Implications For Spread Of Tick-Borne Disease, Daniel E. Sonenshine
Range Expansion Of Tick Disease Vectors In North America: Implications For Spread Of Tick-Borne Disease, Daniel E. Sonenshine
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Ticks are the major vectors of most disease-causing agents to humans, companion animals and wildlife. Moreover, ticks transmit a greater variety of pathogenic agents than any other blood-feeding arthropod. Ticks have been expanding their geographic ranges in recent decades largely due to climate change. Furthermore, tick populations in many areas of their past and even newly established localities have increased in abundance. These dynamic changes present new and increasing severe public health threats to humans, livestock and companion animals in areas where they were previously unknown or were considered to be of minor importance. Here in this review, the geographic …

(First paragraph) Chollett et al. (2017) make the case that a local network of marine protected areas (MPAs) enhances fisheries for Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) off the coast of Honduras. However, their simulation focused on one ecoregion where self-recruitment is predicted to be among the highest in the Caribbean (Cowen, Paris, & Srinivasan, 2006). The shallow banks and scattered cays of the Honduran-Nicaraguan Rise, separating the Cayman and Colombian basins, create an obstacle to the powerful southern Caribbean jet (Richardson, 2005), fostering an ideal location for topographically steered eddies and larval retention. Local management, whether based on traditional …

The ~ 3.48 billion-year-old Dresser Formation, Pilbara Craton, Western Australia, is a key geological unit for the study of Earth's earliest life and the habitats it occupied. Here, we describe a new suite of spheroidal to lenticular microstructures that morphologically resemble some previously reported Archean microfossils. Correlative microscopy shows that these objects have a size distribution, wall ultrastructure, and chemistry that are incompatible with a microfossil origin and instead are interpreted as pyritized and silicified fragments of vesicular volcanic glass. Organic kerogenous material is associated with much of the altered volcanic glass; variable quantities of organic carbon line or fill …

Earth's modern climate is defined by the presence of ice at both poles, but that ice is now disappearing. Therefore understanding the origin and causes of polar ice stability is more critical than ever. Here we provide novel geochemical data that constrain past dynamics of glacial ice on Greenland and Arctic sea ice. Based on accurate source determinations of individual ice-rafted Fe-oxide grains, we find evidence for episodic glaciation of distinct source regions on Greenland as far-ranging as ~68°N and ~80°N synchronous with ice-rafting from circum-Arctic sources, beginning in the middle Eocene. Glacial intervals broadly coincide with reduced CO2 …

Composition Of Dissolved Organic Matter In Pore Waters Of Anoxic Marine Sediments Analyzed By 1h Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Christina A. Fox, Hussain A. Abdulla, David J. Burdige, James P. Lewicki, Tomoko Komada
OES Faculty Publications
Marine sediments are globally significant sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to the oceans, but the biogeochemical role of pore-water DOM in the benthic and marine carbon cycles remains unclear due to a lack of understanding about the molecular composition of DOM. To help fill this knowledge gap, we used 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to examine depth variability in the composition of pore-water DOM in anoxic sediments of Santa Barbara Basin, California Borderland. Proton detected spectra were acquired on whole samples without pre-concentration to avoid preclusion of any DOM components from the analytical window. Broad unresolved resonance (operationally …

High-resolution computer models can simulate complex systems and processes in order to evaluate a solution quickly and inexpensively. Many simulation models produce dynamic functional output, such as a set of time-series data generated during a process. These computer models require verification and validation (V&V) to assess the correctness of these simulations. In particular, the model validation effort evaluates if the model is an appropriate representation of the real-world system that it is meant to simulate. However, when assessing a model capable of generating functional output, it is useful to learn more than simply whether the model is valid or invalid. …

Aryl alkyl ketones, acetate esters, and acetamides undergo facile one-pot enol silane formation, Mukaiyama aldol addition, and dehydrosilyloxylation in the presence of an amine base and excess trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate. The chalcone and cinnamate products are generally recovered in high yield. The relative stoichiometry of the trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate and amine base reagents determines whether the reaction yields the β- silyloxy carbonyl product or the α, β -unsaturated carbonyl.

Ketones readily undergo conversion to enol silanes in the presence of trialkylamine base and trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) and add to propargyl cations to yield b-alkynyl ketones. The propargyl cations are generated in the same reaction flask through the TMSOTf-promoted ionization of propargyl acetates or propargyl propionates. A range of enol silane precursors and propargyl carboxylates reacts efficiently (20 examples, up to 99% yield). Cyclization of a representative product in the presence of TMSOTf provided 61% yield of the trisubstituted furan.

On Oxygen-Rich Sr Variables In The Solar Neighborhood, Tuncay Özdemi̇r
Turkish Journal of Physics
Brightness distribution of variable stars was investigated based on good Hipparcos parallaxes of semiregular variables (SRVs) in the solar neighborhood, and it is shown that the order of the variability types Lb, SR, SRb, SRa, and Mira is, statistically, an order of increasing brightness along the red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch. In addition, it is also shown that the majority of Miras are above and majority of SRVs are below the tip of the red giant branch. The periods of SRVs that fall in Wood's sequence C (fundamental mode) of large Magellanic clouds were identified. Statistically, the order …

One-Dimensional Fluid And Hybrid Numerical Analysis Of The Plasma Properties Inthe Discharge Channel Of A Hall Thruster, Çinar Yüncüler, İsmai̇l Rafatov, Demet Uluşen Aksoy
Turkish Journal of Physics
One-dimensional fluid and hybrid fluid-kinetic numerical codes are developed and applied to the analysis of axial distributions of plasma properties in the discharge channel of a Hall-effect thruster. Within the hybrid model ions are described by the kinetic Vlasov equation, while electrons and neutral atoms are treated as fluids. The results obtained from fluid and hybrid models are compared. Different operating regimes such as damped, periodic, and aperiodic irregular oscillations about the stationary state are observed and discussed. Thrust and efficiency of the thruster for different input parameters are estimated.
Triple Higgs Boson Production In A Γγ-Collider At The Future Linear Collider, Nasuf Sönmez
Triple Higgs Boson Production In A Γγ-Collider At The Future Linear Collider, Nasuf Sönmez
Turkish Journal of Physics
In this study, triple Higgs boson production channels in a γγ-collider are investigated in the context of the two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM). This model has three neutral Higgs bosons (h0/H0/A0 ) and two charged Higgs bosons (H±). Between all the possible combinations of the triple Higgs bosons in the final state, only the following two scattering processes are probable at tree-level: γγ → H+H-h0 and γγ → H+H-H0. These two processes are important to determine the triple Higgs self-couplings gH+H-h0 and gH+H-H0 in the 2HDM. The calculation is carried out for two scenarios, which are inspired by recent experimental and theoretical …

1.Restoring resilient ecosystems in an era of rapid environmental change requires a flexible framework for selecting assemblages of species based on functional traits. However, current trait‐based models have been limited to algorithms that select species assemblages that only converge on specified average trait values, and could not accommodate the common desire among restoration ecologists to generate functionally diverse assemblages.
2.We have solved this problem by applying a nonlinear optimization algorithm to solve for the species relative abundances that maximize Rao's quadratic entropy (Q) subject to other linear constraints. Rao's Q is a closed‐form algebraic expression of functional diversity …

On Extended Quadratic Hazard Rate Distribution: Development, Properties, Characterizations And Applications, Fiaz Ahmad Bhatti, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Wenhui Sheng, Munir Ahmad
Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we propose a flexible extended quadratic hazard rate (EQHR) distribution with increasing, decreasing, bathtub and upside-down bathtub hazard rate function. The EQHR density is arc, right-skewed and symmetrical shaped. This distribution is also obtained from compounding mixture distributions. Stochastic orderings, descriptive measures on the basis of quantiles, order statistics and reliability measures are theoretically established. Characterizations of the EQHR distribution are studied via different techniques. Parameters of the EQHR distribution are estimated using the maximum likelihood method. Goodness of fit of this distribution through different methods is studied.

Annealing Effect Of Gold Thin Films On The Light Output Performances Of Organic Light Emitting Diodes, Seli̇n Piravadili Mucur, Emi̇ne Teki̇n
Turkish Journal of Physics
Gold thin films (GTFs) are transferred onto a nanostructured surface and their effects on the characteristics of organic light emitting diodes (OLED) are investigated. GTF deposition is realized by the physical vapor deposition technique under high vacuum. Globose gold nanostructures are successfully generated by annealing GTFs at different temperatures. Atomic force microscopy reveals morphological changes affected by film thicknesses and annealing temperatures. In the tailored device architecture, GTFs, [poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate) and poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene are used as a hole injection layer, a hole transport layer, and an emissive layer, respectively. The performances of the fabricated OLEDs are enhanced in the presence …

Field Electron Emission Area Revisited: An Integrated Method For The Area Extraction Model, Ahmed Abdulrahman Al-Tabbakh
Turkish Journal of Physics
For electron field emitters, the emitter's physical and geometrical parameters, namely the emitter work function and its geometrical factor, are extracted from the slope of the Fowler-Nordheim (FN) plot. The literature contains few investigations and reviews of extended parameter extraction models based on the slope and intercept of the FN plot. However, due to the complexity of these reviews, there is a great need for an integrated approach to the area extraction model whereby a simplified account of the derivation and implementation of the model is presented and made convenient, especially for scholars other than physicists and engineers. This is …

Surface Effect In Explaining The Elastic Scattering Of The $\Alpha +^{12}$C System At Low Energies, Yasemi̇n Küçük
Turkish Journal of Physics
In this paper, the elastic scattering angular distributions data of the $\alpha +$12C reaction at an energy range of 13.0 to 172.5 MeV were analyzed within the framework of optical model formalism. A phenomenological deep real potential was used with a phenomenological Woods-Saxon type imaginary potential. Excellent agreement was obtained in the high-energy region. The phenomenological deep potential was unable to explain the experimental data in the low-energy region. The experimental data at both low and high energies could not be explained at the same time. In order to explain the data simultaneously at low energy and high energy, the …

Investigation Of The Influence Of Various Reflector Elements Material Types On The Core Nuclear Parameters Of The 2 Mw Triga Mark-Ii Research Reactor Using The Monte Carlo Code, Abdelaziz Darif, Abdelouahed Chetaine, Mohammed Mghar, Ouadie Kabach
Turkish Journal of Physics
The influence of variation in the kind of material of neutron reflector elements on the core neutronic parameters of the Moroccan Triga Mark-II research reactor was examined. The comparison was made between three kinds of reflector element materials: graphite, beryllium, and beryllium oxide. MCNP5 Monte Carlo computations of the effective neutron multiplication factor (${k}_{{eff}})$ of the reactor according to the number of reflector material elements inserted in the reactor core for these three reflector elements materials families were carried out. The results found could be used in order to increase the ${k}_{{eff}}$ parameter without changing the size of the reactor.
