Design And Synthesis Of Novel Octacarboxy Porphyrinic Metal–Organic Frameworks, Jacob A. Johnson Dec 2016

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Octacarboxy Porphyrinic Metal–Organic Frameworks, Jacob A. Johnson

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a class of nanoporous crystalline materials constructed via the interconnection between metal-ions/inorganic clusters and organic ligands. Since the surface area, pore size and distribution, and chemical functionalities of MOFs are highly tunable via the judicious combinations of inorganic clusters and organic ligands, MOFs have attracted intensive interests for a variety of applications including gas adsorption and separation, catalysis, chemical sensing, and drug delivery among others. Porphyrin based ligands are of particular interest for building functional MOFs due to their unique photo-, electro-, and catalytic properties. In addition, the four-fold symmetry of porphyrin ligands offers an effective …

Subtractive Methods To Form Pyrite And Sulfide Nanostructures Of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu And Zn, Kurt W. Kolasinski Dec 2016

Subtractive Methods To Form Pyrite And Sulfide Nanostructures Of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu And Zn, Kurt W. Kolasinski

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The low Z metals Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn are Earth abundant, i.e. inexpensive, and their sulfides are of low toxicity. This makes them appealing candidates for materials applications requiring semiconductors or, in the case of CoS2, a metal since they can potentially be produced in large quantities and low cost. Though of great potential little work has explored how subtractive methods can be used to form nanostructured and/or porous structures in, e.g. FeS2, CoS2, NiS, Cu2S and ZnS.

The Pace And Timing Of Changing Landscapes As Viewed Through Cosmogenic Radionuclides: Synthetic And Real Examples From The Central Andes And Amazonia, Pedro Val Dec 2016

The Pace And Timing Of Changing Landscapes As Viewed Through Cosmogenic Radionuclides: Synthetic And Real Examples From The Central Andes And Amazonia, Pedro Val

Dissertations - ALL

In the past three decades, the use of cosmogenic radionuclides revolutionized research in geomorphology. Cosmogenic radionuclides, such as 10Be and 26Al, accumulate within quartz crystals at a relatively well-constrained rate due to the bombardment of the Earth’s atmosphere by cosmic rays. Since the early 90’s, many studies utilized 10Be and 26Al to determine the pace and timing of vertical changes, or absence thereof, to the uppermost meters of the Earth’s surface. In particular, the ability to simply collect a bag of sand from the bottom of a stream and, after extracting the quartz from it, determine the average rate of …

Trichloroacetimidates As Alkylating Reagents In C-N Bond Formation And Synthesis Of Aminosteroid And Quinoline Inhibitors Of Src Homology 2 Domain-Containing Inositol Phosphatase (Ship), Daniel Ryan Wallach

Dissertations - ALL

Trichloroacetimidates have frequently been used in the formation of glycosidic bonds and other ethers, which is especially useful for the introduction of ether protecting groups. Trichloroacetimidates have also been used as electrophiles in Friedel-Crafts alkylation reactions. The formation of C-N bonds has also been accomplished utilizing trichloroacetimidates. Most frequently C-N bond formation with trichloroacetimidates is associated with sigmatropic rearrangement of an allylic trichloroacetimidate to an allylic trichloroacetamide. This reaction can proceed thermally or through the use of Lewis acid or transition metal catalysts. Recently, the direct substitution of trichloroacetimidates using nitrogen nucleophiles has been accomplished utilizing transition metal catalysts, which …

Searches For The Exclusive Higgs And The Charged Higgs Bosons With The Atlas Detector At The Lhc, Last Feremenga Dec 2016

Searches For The Exclusive Higgs And The Charged Higgs Bosons With The Atlas Detector At The Lhc, Last Feremenga

Physics Dissertations - Archive

In this thesis, searches for the exclusive Standard Model (SM) and charged hMSSM Higgs bosons are performed. While observations of the SM Higgs boson in 2012 by ATLAS and CMS collaborations were ground-breaking, several of the SM Higgs boson properties such as its coupling strengths and branching ratios of its decays still carry large systematic uncertainties. Higgs boson candidates from exclusive production could lower these systematic uncertainties due to their cleaner production environment, improving knowledge of the SM Higgs boson sector. Since the charged Higgs boson is not included in the SM, its evidence would clearly indicate physics beyond the …

Assessing Data Quality In Citizen Science, Margaret Kosmala, Andrea Wiggins, Alexandra Swanson, Brooke Simmons Dec 2016

Assessing Data Quality In Citizen Science, Margaret Kosmala, Andrea Wiggins, Alexandra Swanson, Brooke Simmons

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Ecological and environmental citizen‐science projects have enormous potential to advance scientific knowledge, influence policy, and guide resource management by producing datasets that would otherwise be infeasible to generate. However, this potential can only be realized if the datasets are of high quality. While scientists are often skeptical of the ability of unpaid volunteers to produce accurate datasets, a growing body of publications clearly shows that diverse types of citizen‐science projects can produce data with accuracy equal to or surpassing that of professionals. Successful projects rely on a suite of methods to boost data accuracy and account for bias, including iterative …

Integration Over Curves And Surfaces Defined By The Closest Point Mapping, Catherine Kublik, Richard Tsai Dec 2016

Integration Over Curves And Surfaces Defined By The Closest Point Mapping, Catherine Kublik, Richard Tsai

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We propose a new formulation for integrating over smooth curves and surfaces that are described by their closest point mappings. Our method is designed for curves and surfaces that are not defined by any explicit parameterization and is intended to be used in combination with level set techniques. However, contrary to the common practice with level set methods, the volume integrals derived from our formulation coincide exactly with the surface or line integrals that one wishes to compute. We study various aspects of this formulation and provide a geometric interpretation of this formulation in terms of the singular values of …

Preparation Of Aminoalcohols And Their Application For The Synthesis Of Heterocycles And As Potential Sensors For Nerve Agents, David L. Sellers Dec 2016

Preparation Of Aminoalcohols And Their Application For The Synthesis Of Heterocycles And As Potential Sensors For Nerve Agents, David L. Sellers

Dissertations

Oxazoles and oxazolines are important heterocyclic scaffolds commonly used in pharmaceuticals and optoelectronic materials. Traditionally these heterocyclic compounds are prepared by condensation methodology that suffers from poor reactivity when using electron deficient or sterically crowded reaction partners. Condensation methods also exhibit low tolerance of many functional groups as the reactions typically use strong acids and high temperatures. This dissertation describes an alternate strategy for the formation of these compounds by employing an epoxide opening followed by oxidation to form these heterocyclic compounds.

Epoxide opening reactions with primary aliphatic, allylic, and benzylic amines, aminolysis reactions, often achieve high yields regardless of …

Background: In previous research, we introduced an automated, localized, fusion-based approach for classifying uterine cervix squamous epithelium into Normal, CIN1, CIN2, and CIN3 grades of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) based on digitized histology image analysis. As part of the CIN assessment process, acellular and atypical cell concentration features were computed from vertical segment partitions of the epithelium region to quantize the relative distribution of nuclei.

Methods: Feature data was extracted from 610 individual segments from 61 images for epithelium classification into categories of Normal, CIN1, CIN2, and CIN3. The classification results were compared against CIN labels obtained from two pathologists …

Computational Methods For Asynchronous Basins, Ian H. Dinwoodie Dec 2016

Computational Methods For Asynchronous Basins, Ian H. Dinwoodie

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

For a Boolean network we consider asynchronous updates and define the exclusive asynchronous basin of attraction for any steady state or cyclic attractor. An algorithm based on commutative algebra is presented to compute the exclusive basin. Finally its use for targeting desirable attractors by selective intervention on network nodes is illustrated with two examples, one cell signalling network and one sensor network measuring human mobility.

An Introduction To Boolean Algebras, Amy Schardijn Dec 2016

An Introduction To Boolean Algebras, Amy Schardijn

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the topic of Boolean algebras. In order to build intuitive understanding of the topic, research began with the investigation of Boolean algebras in the area of Abstract Algebra. The content of this initial research used a particular notation. The ideas of partially ordered sets, lattices, least upper bounds, and greatest lower bounds were used to define the structure of a Boolean algebra. From this fundamental understanding, we were able to study atoms, Boolean algebra isomorphisms, and Stone’s Representation Theorem for finite Boolean algebras. We also verified and proved many properties involving Boolean algebras and related structures.

We …

Regular Round Matroids, Svetlana Borissova Dec 2016

Regular Round Matroids, Svetlana Borissova

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

A matroid M is a finite set E, called the ground set of M, together with a notion of what it means for subsets of E to be independent. Some matroids, called regular matroids, have the property that all elements in their ground set can be represented by vectors over any field. A matroid is called round if its dual has no two disjoint minimal dependent sets. Roundness is an important property that was very useful in the recent proof of Rota's conjecture, which remained an unsolved problem for 40 years in matroid theory. In this thesis, we …

Planar Graphs, Biplanar Graphs And Graph Thickness, Sean M. Hearon Dec 2016

Planar Graphs, Biplanar Graphs And Graph Thickness, Sean M. Hearon

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

A graph is planar if it can be drawn on a piece of paper such that no two edges cross. The smallest complete and complete bipartite graphs that are not planar are K5 and K{3,3}. A biplanar graph is a graph whose edges can be colored using red and blue such that the red edges induce a planar subgraph and the blue edges induce a planar subgraph. In this thesis, we determine the smallest complete and complete bipartite graphs that are not biplanar.

Bio-Mathematics: Introduction To The Mathematical Model Of The Hepatitis C Virus, Lucille J. Durfee Dec 2016

Bio-Mathematics: Introduction To The Mathematical Model Of The Hepatitis C Virus, Lucille J. Durfee

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In this thesis, we will study bio-mathematics. We will introduce differential equations, biological applications, and simulations with emphasis in molecular events. One of the first courses of action is to introduce and construct a mathematical model of our biological element. The biological element of study is the Hepatitis C virus. The idea in creating a mathematical model is to approach the biological element in small steps. We will first introduce a block (schematic) diagram of the element, create differential equations that define the diagram, convert the dimensional equations to non-dimensional equations, reduce the number of parameters, identify the important parameters, …

Using Near-Infrared Photography To Better Study Snow Microstructure And Its Variability Over Time And Space, Jesse Raymond Dean Dec 2016

Using Near-Infrared Photography To Better Study Snow Microstructure And Its Variability Over Time And Space, Jesse Raymond Dean

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The methods typically used to study snow stratigraphy, microstructure, and variability are expensive, cumbersome, and often highly subjective. Near-infrared (NIR) photography is a low-cost, portable tool to rapidly collect high-resolution, objective measurements of snow microstructure and variability. To expand its application, an active-source NIR flash was introduced to the traditionally passive-source method. NIR imagery was collected alongside proven snowpit methods such as manual observation, Snow Fork wetness, and Snow Micro-Penetrometer hardness profiles. NIR photography was also deployed in five pits along a 10.6 km transect in Grand Mesa, CO, to track stratigraphy variations in space. The NIR flash was found …

Latin Squares And Their Applications To Cryptography, Nathan O. Schmidt Dec 2016

Latin Squares And Their Applications To Cryptography, Nathan O. Schmidt

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

A latin square of order-n is an n x n array over a set of n symbols such that every symbol appears exactly once in each row and exactly once in each column. Latin squares encode features of algebraic structures. When an algebraic structure passes certain "latin square tests", it is a candidate for use in the construction of cryptographic systems. A transversal of a latin square is a list of n distinct symbols, one from each row and each column. The question regarding the existence of transversals in latin squares that encode the Cayley tables of finite groups …

Continuous Snow Water Equivalent Measurements With Ultra-Wideband Radar: Towards A New Generation Of Real-Time Automated Snow Sensor Arrays, Mark Edward Robertson Dec 2016

Continuous Snow Water Equivalent Measurements With Ultra-Wideband Radar: Towards A New Generation Of Real-Time Automated Snow Sensor Arrays, Mark Edward Robertson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Snow accounts for the majority of precipitation in many areas of the Western United States, and accurate measurements of the amount of water contained in the snowpack, known as snow water equivalent (SWE), are therefore important for water resource managers. The National Resources Conservation Service Snow Telemetry (SNOTEL) sites are the current standard remote measurement of SWE, with approximately 800 sites across the Western United States. Measurements at these sites are made by snow pillows, which weigh the overburden pressure of a snowpack, and are relatively expensive to install and maintain. Spring runoff is modeled using a 30-year average of …

Controls On The Presence, Concentration, Storage, And Variability Of Soil Inorganic Carbon In A Semi-Arid Watershed, Christopher Allen Stanbery Dec 2016

Controls On The Presence, Concentration, Storage, And Variability Of Soil Inorganic Carbon In A Semi-Arid Watershed, Christopher Allen Stanbery

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Soil inorganic carbon (SIC) constitutes approximately 40% of terrestrial soil carbon and is an integral part of the global carbon cycle; however, the controls on the storage and flux of inorganic carbon are poorly understood. Soil forming factors controlling SIC storage and flux include climate, organisms, relief, parent material, and time (Jenny, 1941). Rainfall is a primary factor controlling SIC accumulation in arid and semi-arid regions, but the hierarchy of controls on SIC development is complex. The Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed in southwestern Idaho is an ideal location to study factors influencing SIC, as the carbon pool transitions from predominately …

Using Infrasound Waves To Monitor Tropospheric Weather And Crater Morphology Changes, Hugo David Ortiz Dec 2016

Using Infrasound Waves To Monitor Tropospheric Weather And Crater Morphology Changes, Hugo David Ortiz

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Infrasound waves generated during volcanic eruptions and recorded near the vent are used to study both changing atmospheric conditions and volcano eruption source characteristics. Infrasound data were recorded for a 32 month period at Volcán Tungurahua (Ecuador) by a five-station network located within 6.5 km from the vent. Infrasound detections made through cross-network correlation indicate cyclic eruptive behavior, which is corroborated by reports from the Ecuadorian monitoring agency. Cross-network correlation lag times are used to compute _10 m resolution infrasound source positions, which take into account NOAA models of local wind and temperature. Variable infrasound-derived source locations suggests source migration …

Climate, energy, and food security are three of the greatest challenges society faces this century. Solutions for mitigating the effects of climate change often conflict with solutions for ensuring society’s future energy and food requirements. For example, BioEnergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) has been proposed as an important method for achieving negative CO2 emissions later this century while simultaneously producing renewable energy on a global scale. However, BECCS has many negative environmental consequences for land, nutrient, and water use as well as biodiversity and food production. In contrast, large-scale industrial cultivation of marine microalgae can provide society with …

Towards Multipurpose Readability Assessment, Ion Madrazo Dec 2016

Towards Multipurpose Readability Assessment, Ion Madrazo

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Readability refers to the ease with which a reader can understand a text. Automatic readability assessment has been widely studied over the past 50 years. However, most of the studies focus on the development of tools that apply either to a single language, domain, or document type. This supposes duplicate efforts for both developers, who need to integrate multiple tools in their systems, and final users, who have to deal with incompatibilities among the readability scales of different tools. In this manuscript, we present MultiRead, a multipurpose readability assessment tool capable of predicting the reading difficulty of texts of varied …

Estimating Length Statistics Of Aggregate Fried Potato Product Via Electromagnetic Radiation Attenuation, Jesse Lovitt Dec 2016

Estimating Length Statistics Of Aggregate Fried Potato Product Via Electromagnetic Radiation Attenuation, Jesse Lovitt

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This work investigates the feasibility of using non-destructive testing, in particular radiation tomography, to recover length statistics from aggregates of fried batonnet cut potato. Non-destructive testing comprises a variety of useful techniques for determining properties of an object that might otherwise require altering or destroying the object physically. Tomography is a common form of non-destructive testing used primarily to infer properties internal to an object. This process involves exposing the object of interest to radiation and detecting the quantity of radiation energy that penetrates the object, usually resulting in a grey scale image.

To do this, an artificial data pipeline …
