Team Formation is widely studied in literature as a method for forming teams or groups under certain constraints. However, very few works address the aspect of collaboration while forming groups under certain constraints. Motivated by the collaborative team formation, we try to extend the problem of team formation to a general problem in the real world scenario of finding compatible roommates to share a place. There are numerous applications like “roommates.com" ,”roomiematch.com" , “Roomi” which try to find roommates based on geographical and cost factors and ignore the important human factors which can play a substantial role in finding a …

The ability to speak freely has always been a source of conflict between rulers and the people over which they exert power. This conflict usually takes the form of State-sponsored censorship with occasional instances of commercial efforts typically to silence criticism or squelch dissent, and people's efforts to evade such censorship. This is even more so evident in the current environment with its ever-growing number of communication technologies and platforms available to individuals around the world. If the face of efforts to control communication before it is posted or to prevent the discovery of information that exists outside of the …

Searching And Classifying Mobile Application Screenshots, Adis Kovacevic

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Searching for a particular application layout image is a challenging task. No search provider gives an adequate method to filter the query results to the look of a mobile application. Searching for a particular style of application requires lots of manual time sifting through the results returned. Search engines such as Google are too broad and return too many unrelated results without providing sufficient filters on things like category or layout type. This paper proposes a technique that would allow the searching and classifying of mobile application screenshots based on the layout of the content, the category of the application, …

With the advent of autonomous vehicles and intelligent traffic monitoring systems, more time and money are being invested into detecting and locating pedestrians for their safety and towards achieving complete autonomy in vehicles. For the task of pedestrian detection, Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets) have been very promising over the past decade. ConvNets have a typical feed-forward structure and they share many properties with the visual system of the human brain. On the other hand, Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) are emerging as an important technique for image …

Learning Perception To Action Mapping For Functional Imitation, Bhupender Singh Dec 2016

Learning Perception To Action Mapping For Functional Imitation, Bhupender Singh

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Imitation leaning is the learning of advanced behavior whereby an agent acquires a skill by observing another's behavior while performing the same skill. The main objective of imitation learning is to make robots usable for a variety of tasks without programming them but by simply demonstrating new tasks. The power of this approach arises since end users of such robots will frequently not know how to program the robot, might not understand the dynamics and behavioral capabilities of the system, and might not know how to program these robots to get different/new tasks done. Some challenges in achieving imitation capabilities …

Systems assigned password have guaranteed robustness against guessing attacks, but they are hard to memorize. To make system assigned passwords more usable, it is of prime importance that systems that assign random password also assist users with memorization and recall. In this work, we have designed a novel technique that employs rote memorization inform of an engaging game, which is played during the account registration process. Based on prior work on chunking, we break a password into three equal chunks, and then the game helps plant those chunks in memory. We present the findings of 17 participant user-study, where we …

Residual Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Soil Nitrogen Pools And Corn Growth, Meghan E. Moser Dec 2016

Residual Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Soil Nitrogen Pools And Corn Growth, Meghan E. Moser

Open Access Theses

Given the dynamic nature of soil nitrogen (N), inorganic N fertilization to corn (Zea mays L.) has potential to alter N pool balance by creating an accumulation or depletion of soil N. Current corn N recommendations in the common corn-soybean rotation of Indiana strive to find the best N rate that maximizes producer profit. Increasing our understanding of soil N will inform producers if they should adjust fertilizer rates for corn to influence maintenance of organic N and Carbon. Our objective was to determine residual N effects from fertilized corn in a corn-soybean rotation by measuring (1) soil N …

Expectation Maximization-Based Likelihood Inference For Com-Poisson Cure Rate Model With Interval Censored Data, Piyachart Wiangnak

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

A cure rate or long-term survival model is a model for survival data with the presence of a cure fraction. In this study, we consider the analysis of a cure rate model with interval-censored data, which is one of the most practical censoring scheme in survival study. A competing cause scenario has been considered and the number of competing causes is assumed to follow a flexible Conway-Maxwell Poisson (COM-Poisson) distribution which can handle both over- and under-dispersion that is usually encountered in discrete data and also includes some of the well-known discrete distributions as special cases. In addition, a logistic …

Three Dimensional Image Reconstruction (3direct) Of Sparse Signals With Mri Application, Melinda M. Au Dec 2016

Three Dimensional Image Reconstruction (3direct) Of Sparse Signals With Mri Application, Melinda M. Au

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

Sparse signal reconstruction has been steadily gaining tremendous attention, specifically in applications of compressed sensing as well as feature selection in signal processing methods [IEEE Signal Processing, Vol. 25 (2008) pp.21-30]. Standard techniques to solve these problems such as the nonlinear Conjugate Gradient method have been used successfully on small and medium sized problems. However, as the desire to collect more data becomes the trend, and the need to process information more quickly and reliably becomes more prevalent than before, these standard meth- ods become inadequate. In this thesis, we present a new approach for sparse signal reconstruction called the …

The Candidate Cluster And Protocluster Catalog (Ccpc). Ii. Spectroscopically Identified Structures Spanning 2 < Z < 6.6, J. R. Franck, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

The Candidate Cluster and Protocluster Catalog (CCPC) is a list of objects at redshifts z > 2 composed of galaxies with spectroscopically confirmed redshifts that are coincident on the sky and in redshift. These protoclusters are identified by searching for groups in volumes corresponding to the expected size of the most massive protoclusters at these redshifts. In CCPC1 we identified 43 candidate protoclusters among 14,000 galaxies between 2.74 < z < 3.71. Here we expand our search to more than 40,000 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts z > 2.00, resulting in an additional 173 candidate structures. The most significant of these are 36 protoclusters with overdensities δ gal > 7. We also identify three large proto-supercluster candidates containing multiple protoclusters at z …

Research is the foremost goal of the project, and it is able to determine the better algorithm for review classification, naive bayes or an SVM. In addition, an SVM which actually gave review’s scores rather than just classifying …

Elasticity Of Cylindrical Black Holes, Conrad Pearson Dec 2016

Elasticity Of Cylindrical Black Holes, Conrad Pearson

Physics

Black holes are regions of strong gravity, and are often regarded as behaving like drops of fluid. When this line of thought is applied to cylindrical black holes (black cylinders), a mapping can be made between known instabilities for black cylinders and ordinary fluid cylinders. However, this known correlation is increasingly less accurate for lower spatial dimensions, and I seek to correct this discrepancy in this thesis. By considering soft solids instead of pure fluids, elastic energy can be included, which brings us closer to a direct comparison. In improving this mapping, it becomes possible to better understand the behavior …

Sensor systems are becoming pervasive in many domains, and are recently being generalized by the Internet of Things (IoT). This wide deployment, however, presents significant security issues.

We develop security techniques for sensor systems and IoT, addressing all security management phases. Prior to deployment, the nodes need to be hardened. We develop nesCheck, a novel approach that combines static analysis and dynamic checking to efficiently enforce memory safety on TinyOS applications. As security guarantees come at a cost, determining which resources to protect becomes important. Our solution, OptAll, leverages game-theoretic techniques to determine the optimal allocation of security resources in …

The ruthenium (II) polypyridyl complexes [(phen)2Ru(tatpp)Ru(phen)2]4+, RPC4 and [(phen)2Ru(tatpp)]2+, RPC3 are promising anticancer candidates due to their observed cytotoxic effect against multiple cancer cell lines. These complexes contain a reactive oxygen species (ROS) creating redox-active tetraazatetrapyridopentacene (tatpp) bridge inducing cytotoxic activity against multiple cancer lines and types. Also, they have shown a selectivity towards malignant and normal cell tissue types that are of interest in cellular biological systems and treatment care. They exhibit the ability to regress tumor growth in mouse models, cleave DNA in gel assays and exhibit efficacies in a hypoxic environment similar to that of tumors in …

Implications Of Lithofacies Association And Architecture For Low And High-Accommodation System Tracts From The Sandstone Dominated Zone ( The Barren Series) Of The Cretaceous-Paleocene Raton Formation, Trinidad, Colorado, Yaqoub Y Y S M Alsayed Alrefaei Dec 2016

Implications Of Lithofacies Association And Architecture For Low And High-Accommodation System Tracts From The Sandstone Dominated Zone ( The Barren Series) Of The Cretaceous-Paleocene Raton Formation, Trinidad, Colorado, Yaqoub Y Y S M Alsayed Alrefaei

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

The Raton Formation is an Upper Cretaceous and Lower Paleocene unit that is interpreted to be deposited in various stages of high-accommodation fluvial systems. High-accommodation flood basin deposits are generally considered poor as reservoir bodies because sand bodies within these basins are considered to be small and disconnected within flood basin mud. Accordingly, they gain less attention in oil and gas exploration and in research. High-accommodation deposits in the Raton Formation contain several sand bodies with different sizes and geometries that could be good candidates for reservoir rocks. These sand bodies are common in outcrops of high-accommodation deposits in the …

Experimental Constraints On The Micromechanics Of Brittle Fragmentation During Earthquake Rupture, Troy J. Barber Dec 2016

Experimental Constraints On The Micromechanics Of Brittle Fragmentation During Earthquake Rupture, Troy J. Barber

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Various fault damage fabrics, from gouge in the principal slip zone, to fragmented and pulverized rocks in the fault damage zone, have been attributed to brittle deformation at high strain rates during earthquake rupture. These fault zone fabrics are significant in terms of 1) the information they contain about coseismic deformation mechanisms, 2) the role they play in dissipating energy and contributing to slip weakening during earthquake rupture, and 3) their influence on fault rock mechanical and hydraulic properties. Past experimental work has shown that there exists a critical threshold in stress-strain rate space through which rock failure transitions from …

Nanopetrophysics Of The Niobrara Formation In Berthoud State #3 Well, Rafael Roberto Villegas Dec 2016

Nanopetrophysics Of The Niobrara Formation In Berthoud State #3 Well, Rafael Roberto Villegas

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

The advent of new drilling and completion technologies over the past two decades has made unconventional shale reservoirs the focus of much of the oil and gas exploration and production throughout the United States. Despite large estimated reserves, unconventional reservoirs are typically characterized by low porosity and extremely low matrix permeability, partly accounting for the relatively low recovery rates seen, ranging from 10-15%. Increasing production from unconventional reservoirs requires an understanding of the reservoir’s nano-petrophysical properties including pore throat size distribution and edge accessible porosity. Furthermore, an understanding of the relationship between TOC, mineralogy, and pore throat distribution is critical …

Fault Detection And Localization Techniques For Concurrent Programs, Jing Xu Dec 2016

Fault Detection And Localization Techniques For Concurrent Programs, Jing Xu

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Concurrency faults are hard to detect and localize due to the nondeterministic behavior of concurrent programs. In this dissertation, we present three approaches to detecting and localizing faults in concurrent programs. The first approach identifies erroneous event patterns in a failed concurrent program execution. Given a failed execution, we characterize the execution as a sequence of context-switch points and then use controlled execution to distinguish erroneous context-switch points from benign context-switch points. Erroneous context-switch points are used to derive erroneous event patterns, which allow the user to quickly localize the actual fault. Our experiments were conducted on thirteen programs. Seven …

Exploratory Data Analysis Over Online Community Networks, Azade Nazi Dec 2016

Exploratory Data Analysis Over Online Community Networks, Azade Nazi

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

An online community network links entities (e.g., users, products) with various relationships (e.g., friendship, co-purchase) and make such information available for access through a web interface. There are numerous such networks on the web, ranging from Twitter, Instagram, which links users as ``followers-followees'', to amazon.com, ebay.com, which links products with relationships such as ``also buy''. Online community networks often feature a web interface that only allows local-neighborhood queries - i.e., given a entity (e.g., users, products) of the community network as input, the system only returns the immediate neighbors of the entity. Further, the rate limit constraint restricts the number …

Integrative Approaches For Large-Scale Biomedical Data Analysis, Ashis Kumer Biswas

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Advancement of the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), also known as the High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) technologies allow researchers investigate genome, transcriptome, or epigenome of any organism from any perspective, thereby contributing to the enrichment of the biomedical data repositories for many of the lesser known phenomena. The regulatory activities inside genome by the non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), the transcribed product of the long-neglected "junk DNA" molecules is one such phenomenon. While large-scale data about the ncRNAs are becoming publicly available, the computational challenges are being imposed to the bioinformaticians for efficient mining to get reliable answers to few subtle questions. Given …

A Harmonic Function Method For Eeg Source Reconstruction, Hongguang Xi

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

Neuronal activities generate the electrical current in the brain, and further result in the potential changes over the scalp. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a technique used to record the potential changes on the scalp. Even though fMRI, PET, MEG and other brain-imaging tools are widely used in brain research, they are limited by low spatial/temporal resolution, cost, mobility and suitability for long-term monitoring. In contrast, EEG signals have been successfully used to obtain useful diagnostic information (neural oscillations and response times) in clinical contexts. Further, they present the advantage to be highly portable, inexpensive, and can be acquired at the bedside …

Spreading Speeds Along Shifting Resource Gradients In Reaction-Diffusion Models And Lattice Differential Equations., Jin Shang Dec 2016

Spreading Speeds Along Shifting Resource Gradients In Reaction-Diffusion Models And Lattice Differential Equations., Jin Shang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A reaction-diffusion model and a lattice differential equation are introduced to describe the persistence and spread of a species along a shifting habitat gradient. The species is assumed to grow everywhere in space and its growth rate is assumed to be monotone and positive along the habitat region. We show that the persistence and spreading dynamics of a species are dependent on the speed of the shifting edge of the favorable habitat, c, as well as c*(∞) and c*(−∞), which are formulated in terms of the dispersal kernel and species growth rates in both directions. When …
