How To Make Machine Learning Robust Against Adversarial Inputs, Gerardo Muela, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2016

How To Make Machine Learning Robust Against Adversarial Inputs, Gerardo Muela, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It has been recently shown that it is possible to "cheat" many machine learning algorithms -- i.e., to perform minor modifications of the inputs that would lead to a wrong classification. This feature can be used by adversaries to avoid spam detection, to create a wrong identification allowing access to classified information, etc. In this paper, we propose a solution to this problem: namely, instead of applying the original machine learning algorithm to the original inputs, we should first perform a random modification of these inputs. Since machine learning algorithms perform well on random data, such a random modification ensures …

Identity‐Based Schemes For A Secured Big Data And Cloud Ict Framework In Smart Grid System, Feng Ye, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Smart grid is an intelligent cyber physical system (CPS). The CPS generates a massive amount of data for efficient grid operation. In this paper, a big data‐driven, cloud‐based information and communication technology (ICT) framework for smart grid CPS is proposed. The proposed ICT framework deploys hybrid cloud servers to enhance scalability and reliability of smart grid communication infrastructure. Because the data in the ICT framework contains much privacy of customers and important data for automated controlling, the security of data transmission must be ensured. In order to secure the communications over the Internet in the system, identity‐based schemes are proposed …

Heat And Mass Transfer In Mhd Micropolar Fluid In The Presence Of Diffusion Thermo And Chemical Reaction, R. V. M.S.S Kirankumar1, V. C. C.Raju, P. D. Prasad, S. V. Varma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This work is devoted to investigating the influence of diffusion thermo effect on hydromagnetic heat and mass transfer oscillatory flow of a micropolar fluid over an infinite moving vertical permeable plate in a saturated porous medium in the presence of transverse magnetic field and chemical reaction. The dimensionless equations are solved analytically using perturbation technique. The effects of the various fluid flow parameters entering into the problem on the velocity, microrotation, temperature and concentration fields within the boundary layer are discussed with the help of graphs. Also the local skin-friction coefficient, the wall couple stress coefficient, and the rates of …

Heat Source Thermoelastic Problem In A Hollow Elliptic Cylinder Under Time-Reversal Principle, Pravin Bhad, Vinod Varghese, Lalsingh Khalsa Dec 2016

Heat Source Thermoelastic Problem In A Hollow Elliptic Cylinder Under Time-Reversal Principle, Pravin Bhad, Vinod Varghese, Lalsingh Khalsa

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The article investigates the time-reversal thermoelasticity of a hollow elliptical cylinder for determining the temperature distribution and its associated thermal stresses at a certain point using integral transform techniques by unifying classical orthogonal polynomials as the kernel. Furthermore, by considering a circle as a special kind of ellipse, it is seen that the temperature distribution and the comparative study of a circular cylinder can be derived as a special case from the present mathematical solution. The numerical results obtained are accurate enough for practical purposes.

Implementation Of The Matrix Differential Transform Method For Obtaining An Approximate Solution Of Some Nonlinear Matrix Evolution Equations, M. M. Khader, A. Borhanifar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This article introduces the matrix differential transform method (MDTM) to apply to matrix partial differential equations (MPDEs) and employs it for solving matrix Fisher equations, matrix Burgers equations and matrix KdV equations. We show how the MDTM applies to the linear part and nonlinear part of any MPDE and give various examples of MPDEs to illustrate the efficiency of the method. The results obtained are in excellent agreement with the exact solution and show that the proposed method is powerful, accurate, and easy.

Students' Explanations In Complex Learning Of Disciplinary Programming, Camilo Vieira

Open Access Dissertations

Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) has been denominated as the third pillar of science and as a set of important skills to solve the problems of a global society. Along with the theoretical and the experimental approaches, computation offers a third alternative to solve complex problems that require processing large amounts of data, or representing complex phenomena that are not easy to experiment with. Despite the relevance of CSE, current professionals and scientists are not well prepared to take advantage of this set of tools and methods. Computation is usually taught in an isolated way from engineering disciplines, and therefore, …

Iterative Solution Of Fractional Diffusion Equation Modelling Anomalous Diffusion, A. Elsaid, S. Shamseldeen, S. Madkour

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, we study the fractional diffusion equation with spatial Riesz fractional derivative. The continuation of the solution of this fractional equation to the solution of the corresponding integer order equation is proved. The series solution is obtained based on properties of Riesz fractional derivative operator and utilizing the optimal homotopy analysis method (OHAM). Numerical simulations are presented to validate the method and to show the effect of changing the fractional derivative parameter on the solution behavior.

Study On The Q-Conjugacy Relations For The Janko Groups, Ali Moghani Dec 2016

Study On The Q-Conjugacy Relations For The Janko Groups, Ali Moghani

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we consider all the Janko sporadic groups J1, J2, J3 and J4 (with orders 175560, 604800, 50232960 and 86775571046077562880, respectively) with a new concept called the markaracter- and Q-conjugacy character tables, which enables us to discuss marks and characters for a finite group on a common basis of Q-conjugacy relationships between their cyclic subgroups. Then by using GAP (Groups, Algorithms and Programming) package we calculate all their dominant classes enabling us to find all possible Q-conjugacy characters for these sporadic groups. Finally, we prove in a main theorem that all twenty …

Optimal Group Decision Making Criterion And How It Can Help To Decrease Poverty, Inequality, And Discrimination, Vladik Kreinovich, Thongchai Dumrongpokaphan Dec 2016

Optimal Group Decision Making Criterion And How It Can Help To Decrease Poverty, Inequality, And Discrimination, Vladik Kreinovich, Thongchai Dumrongpokaphan

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Traditional approach to group decision making in economics is to maximize the GDP, i.e., the overall gain. The hope behind this approach is that the increased wealth will trickle down to everyone. Sometimes, this happens, but often, in spite of an increase in overall GDP, inequality remains: some people remain poor, some groups continue to face economic discrimination, etc. This shows that maximizing the overall gain is probably not always the best criterion in group decision making. In this chapter, we find a group decision making criterion which is optimal (in some reasonable sense), and we show that using this …

A Modification Of Backpropagation Enables Neural Networks To Learn Preferences, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2016

A Modification Of Backpropagation Enables Neural Networks To Learn Preferences, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To help a person make proper decisions, we must first understand the person's preferences. A natural way to determine these preferences is to learn them from the person's choices. In principle, we can use the traditional machine learning techniques: we start with all the pairs (x,y) of options for which we know the person's choices, and we train, e.g., the neural network to recognize these choices. However, this process does not take into account that a rational person's choices are consistent: e.g., if a person prefers a to b and b to c, this person should also prefer a and …

For Fuzzy Logic, Occam's Principle Explains The Ubiquity Of The Golden Ratio And Of The 80-20 Rule, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In this paper, we show that for fuzzy logic, the Occam's principle -- that we should always select the simplest possible explanation -- explains the ubiquity of the golden ratio and of the 80-20 rule.

It is an empirical fact that the algebraic product is one the most efficient "and"-operations in fuzzy logic. In this paper, we provide one of the possible explanations of this empirical phenomenon.

Towards An Algebraic Description Of Set Arithmetic, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2016

Towards An Algebraic Description Of Set Arithmetic, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To describe the state of the world, we need to describe the values of all physical quantities. In practice, due to inevitable measurement inaccuracy, we do not know the exact values of these quantities, we only know the sets of possible values for these quantities. On the class of such uncertainty-related sets, we can naturally define arithmetic operations that transform, e.g., uncertainty in a and b into uncertainty with which we know the sum a + b.

In many applications, it has been useful to reformulate the problem in purely algebraic terms, i.e., in terms of axioms that the basic …

Why The Presence Of Point-Wise ("Punctate") Calcifications Or Linear Configurations Of Calcifications Makes Breast Cancer More Probable: A Geometric Explanation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2016

Why The Presence Of Point-Wise ("Punctate") Calcifications Or Linear Configurations Of Calcifications Makes Breast Cancer More Probable: A Geometric Explanation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When a specialist analyzes a mammogram for signs of possible breast cancer, he or she pays special attention to point-wise and linear-shaped calcifications and point-wise and linear configurations of calcification -- since empirically, such calcifications and combinations of calcifications are indeed most frequently associated with cancer. In this paper, we provide a geometric explanation for this empirical phenomenon.

Why Most Bright Stars Are Binary But Most Dim Stars Are Single: A Simple Qualitative Explanation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2016

Why Most Bright Stars Are Binary But Most Dim Stars Are Single: A Simple Qualitative Explanation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is known that most visible stars are binary: they have a nearby companion star, and these two stars orbit around each other. Based on this fact, until recently, astronomers believed that, in general, most stars are binary. A few years ago, a surprising paper showed that while most bright stars are indeed binary, most dim stars are single. In this paper, we provide a simple qualitative explanation for this empirical fact.

Lagrangian Analysis Of Vector And Tensor Fields: Algorithmic Foundations And Applications In Medical Imaging And Computational Fluid Dynamics, Zi'ang Ding

Open Access Dissertations

Both vector and tensor fields are important mathematical tools used to describe the physics of many phenomena in science and engineering. Effective vector and tensor field visualization techniques are therefore needed to interpret and analyze the corresponding data and achieve new insight into the considered problem. This dissertation is concerned with the extraction of important structural properties from vector and tensor datasets. Specifically, we present a unified approach for the characterization of distinguished manifolds that form the skeleton of vector and tensor fields and play a key role in understanding their properties.

This dissertation makes several important contributions in this …

Fine-Tuning An Algorithm For Semantic Document Clustering Using A Similarity Graph, Lubomir Stanchev Dec 2016

Fine-Tuning An Algorithm For Semantic Document Clustering Using A Similarity Graph, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

In this article, we examine an algorithm for document clustering using a similarity graph. The graph stores words and common phrases from the English language as nodes and it can be used to compute the degree of semantic similarity between any two phrases. One application of the similarity graph is semantic document clustering, that is, grouping documents based on the meaning of the words in them. Since our algorithm for semantic document clustering relies on multiple parameters, we examine how fine-tuning these values affects the quality of the result. Specifically, we use the Reuters-21578 benchmark, which contains 11,362 newswire stories …

The History Of Algorithmic Complexity, Audrey A. Nasar Dec 2016

The History Of Algorithmic Complexity, Audrey A. Nasar

Publications and Research

This paper provides a historical account of the development of algorithmic complexity in a form that is suitable to instructors of mathematics at the high school or undergraduate level. The study of algorithmic complexity, despite being deeply rooted in mathematics, is usually restricted to the computer science curriculum. By providing a historical account of algorithmic complexity through a mathematical lens, this paper aims to equip mathematics educators with the necessary background and framework for incorporating the analysis of algorithmic complexity into mathematics courses as early on as algebra or pre-calculus.

Synthesis And Performance Of Novel Supramolecular Tools For Single-Particle Cryogenic Electron Microscopy And Drug And Gene Delivery, Kyle J. Wright

Open Access Dissertations

High-resolution biomacromolecular structure elucidation is fundamentally important to structure-based drug design and basic research into complex biochemical processes. Cryo-EM is an emerging alternative to XRD and NMR that is complementary in many ways relative to XRD and NMR. Materials approaches to cryo-EM are anticipated to greatly facilitate the cryo-EM process, allowing progress toward a more high-throughput application of cryo-EM to address challenges in structural biology. ^ Various affinity-based approaches inspired by approaches previously introduced for 2D crystallization were developed for facilitation of cryo-EM. A library of affinity lipopolymer constructs were synthesized consisting of lipopolymers of various PEG molecular weights conjugated …

Non Markovian Queue With Two Types Service Optional Re-Service And General Vacation Distribution, K. Sathiya, G. Ayyappan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We consider a single server batch arrival queueing system, where the server provides two types of heterogeneous service. A customer has the option of choosing either type 1 service with probability p1 or type 2 service with probability p2 with the service times follow general distribution. After the completion of either type 1 or type 2 service a customer has the option to repeat or not to repeat the type 1 or type 2 service. As soon as the customer service is completed, the server will take a vacation with probability θ or may continue staying in the system with …

Grading That Takes Into Account The Need To Learn From Mistakes, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2016

Grading That Takes Into Account The Need To Learn From Mistakes, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is well known that the best way to learn the new material is to try it, to make mistakes, and to learn from these mistakes. However, the current grading scheme, in which the overall grade is a weighted average of the grades for all the assignments, exams, etc., does not encourage mistakes: any mistake decreases the grade on the corresponding assignment and thus, decreases the overall grade for the class. It is therefore desirable to modify the usual grading scheme, so that it will take into account -- and encourage -- learning by mistakes. Such a modification is proposed …

Structure Of Filled Functions: Why Gaussian And Cauchy Templates Are Most Efficient, Vyacheslav Kalashnikov, Vladik Kreinovich, José Guadalupe Flores Muñiz, Nataliya Kalashnykova Dec 2016

Structure Of Filled Functions: Why Gaussian And Cauchy Templates Are Most Efficient, Vyacheslav Kalashnikov, Vladik Kreinovich, José Guadalupe Flores Muñiz, Nataliya Kalashnykova

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the main problems of optimization algorithms is that they often end up in a local optimum. It is, therefore, necessary to make sure that the algorithm gets out of the local optimum and eventually reaches the global optimum. One of the promising ways guiding one from the local optimum is prompted by the filled function method. It turns out that empirically, the best smoothing functions to use in this method are the Gaussian and Cauchy functions. In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation of this empirical effect.

When Invading, Cancer Cells Do Not Divide: A Geometric (Symmetry-Based) Explanation Of An Empirical Observation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In general, malignant tumors are known to grow fast, cancer cells that form these tumors divide and spread around. Tumors also experience the process of metastasis, when cancer cells invade neighboring organs. A recent experiment has shown that, contrary to the previous assumptions, when cancer cells are invading, they stop dividing. In this paper, we provide a geometric explanation for this empirical phenomenon.
