Our aim is to provide efficient partitioning and allocation of data for web service compositions. Web service compositions are represented as partial order database transactions. We accommodate a variety of transaction types, such as read-only and write-oriented transactions, to support workloads in cloud environments. We introduce an approach that partitions and allocates small units of data, called micropartitions, to multiple database nodes. Each database node stores only the data needed to support a specific workload. Transactions are routed directly to the appropriate data nodes. Our approach guarantees serializability and efficient execution.

In the simplest form of group testing, pools are formed by compositing a fixed number of individual specimens (e.g., blood, urine, swab, etc.) and then the pools are tested for a binary characteristic, such as presence or absence of a disease. Group testing is commonly used to screen for a variety of sexually transmitted diseases in epidemiological applications where the main goal is to increase testing efficiency. The joint modeling framework has found extensive applications in cancer and other biomedical research. For example, recent initiatives and developments in precision medicine call for appropriate prognostic tools to assist individualized or personalized approaches in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Data generated by clinical trials and medical research often include correlated longitudinal marker measurements and time- to-event information, which are possibly a recurrent event, competing risks, and a survival outcome. Chemical dynamics, in principle, should be understood by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a molecular system, describing motion of the nuclei and electrons. However, the computational efforts to solve this partial second-order differential equation scales exponentially with the system size, which prevents us from getting exact numerical solutions for systems larger than 4-5 atoms. Thus, approximations simplifying the picture are necessary. The models with constant coefficients of the covariates across space and time are commonly used in spatio-temporal analyses. However, the associations between risk factors and the outcome could have locally differential temporal trends in many cases. In this study, a Bayesian latent cluster modeling strategy is employed to identify potential spatial clusters in which locally specific sets of temporally varying coefficients of covariates are allowed. A state-level panel data of police officers occupational fatal victimization for the years 1979-2010 is used. Iron is essential for nearly all life on earth. Cells must maintain sufficient levels of this important nutrient due its function as a central co-factor for many cellular processes. Although iron is extremely plentiful, its poor solubility requires specialized import. OleT (CYP152L1) is a recently discovered cytochrome P450 that is structurally similar to peroxide dependent P450s that catalyze fatty acid hydroxylations. OleT has been shown to catalyze the cleavage of n chain length fatty acids to form n-1 alkenes through C-C bond scission of the terminal carboxylate. Using headspace GC-MS and FTIR with isotopically labeled substrates, we have confirmed that OleT metabolizes eicosanoic acid to 1-nonadecene, forming carbon dioxide (CO2) as a co-product of the reaction. No oxygen deriving from peroxide is observed in either product. In order to probe the mechanistic deviation of OleT from P450 peroxygenases, we have …

This paper explores the double Poisson distribution. The probability mass function and the difficulties associated with derivative-based optimization for this distribution are discussed. Stata software developed for estimation of double Poisson regression is detailed. Simulations are used to test the software. Data which are over-, under-, and equidispersed relative to the Poisson are generated and the software is utilized to estimate a regression model, a zero-inflated model, and a marginalized zero-inflated model all based on the double Poisson distribution. Segmenting an image into meaningful regions is an important step in many computer vision applications such as facial recognition, target tracking and medical image analysis. Because image segmentation is an ill-posed problem, parameters are needed to constrain the solution to one that is suitable for a given application. For a user, setting parameter values is often unintuitive. We present a method for automating segmentation parameter selection using an efficient search method to optimize a segmentation objective function. Exploratory crystal growth is a versatile technique and one that can advance materials discovery. Through exploratory crystal growth, it is possible to synthesize many new materials that can have applications in many fields, including solid-state lighting. There exist many adaptations for exploratory crystal growth, including the use of alkali halide flux growth and hydroflux growth, both reported herein. By changing variants in these techniques like reactant ratios, temperature, reaction profile, and, most importantly here, the flux compositions, it is possible to change the products formed or fine tune reactions for product purity.

The biogeochemical cycling of iron, oxygen, and organic carbon are inextricably linked through the intermediacy of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) brought about by the autoxidation of ferrous iron (Fe(II)). This dissertation presents laboratory and field-based studies to investigate the kinetics of Fe(II) oxidation and its role in the production of ROS at oxic/anoxic interfaces. The net oxidation of Fe(II) in natural waters is a complex process consisting of alternating cycles of Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) reduction processes that are ultimately terminated via precipitation as insoluble Fe(III) (oxy)hydroxides. This complicates kinetic measurements of individual reaction steps in the process.

This dissertation is comprised and grounded in statistical theory with an application to solving real world problems. In particular, the development and implementation of multiple score tests under a variety of scenarios are derived, applied, and interpreted. In chapter 2, I propose a score test for independence of the marginals based on Lakshminarayana’s bivariate Poisson distribution. Each marginal distribution of the bivariate model is a univariate Poisson distribution, and the parameters of the bivariate distribution can be estimated using maximum likelihood methods. The lower Permian formation in the central region of Saudi Arabia is a key hydrocarbon siliciclastic reservoir. However, in Majhol field, the reservoir properties vary laterally due to diagenesis and facies changes. Conventional seismic interpretation has failed to map the heterogeneities of the reservoir properties that control the gas production of this field. Therefore, there was an opportunity to employ more advanced quantitative seismic techniques to delineate the productive gas sand facies in the field.

Conventionally, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is studied using sea surface temperature (SST) observations in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. Recently, sea surface salinity (SSS) in the equatorial Pacific has been studied in relation to the phases of ENSO. Previously, SSS was observed in the equatorial Pacific using the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) / Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TOA), the Argo float network, and Oceanic General Circulation Models (OGCM). Prestack depth migration (PreSDM) versus traditional post-stack time migration has become a common method for seismic velocity model building and imaging. The leading-order Lorentz-violating hadronic Lagrange densities are constructed using chiral perturbation theory. This is done for both pions and nucleons starting from a two-flavor quark-level Lagrangian that consists of dimension-four Lorentzviolation operators. The effective Lagrangians are first constructed in the absence of external fields. The formalism is then extended to include interactions with external fields. The presence of Lorentz violation modifies the transformation behavior of external fields under the chiral group SU(2)L × SU(2)R. This dissertation focuses on extracting the exclusive γ∗n(p) → pπ-(p) reaction cross section from deuterium data. The existing γ∗n → pπ- event generator is modified to include the spectator (proton) information based on the CD-Bonn potential [28] to simulate the real data process. With this method, the exclusive quasi-free process is isolated successfully as demonstrated by the comparison of the spectator momentum distribution of the simulation with the missing momentum distribution of the data, and the kinematical final-state-interaction contribution factor RFSI is extracted directly from the data according to the ratio between the exclusive quasi-free and full cross sections. Both the marginalized Bayesian modal estimation (MBME) and Metropolis-Hasting within Gibbs (MH/Gibbs) are the popular estimation methods for Item Response Theory (IRT). However, predictions from MBME and MH/Gibbs are not directly comparable because of two problems. First, the examinees with the same response pattern do not produce the same ability estimates from MH/Gibbs while MBME provides identical estimates. In this dissertation we report on the first search for solar axions from atomic transitions in the solar core. A search for the 14.4 keV axion from the ground state transition in 57Fe in the sun was also performed, via the axioelectric effect in TeO2 bolometers, in the CUORE-0 experiment. Both axion searches are performed in the scope of the DSFZ invisible axion model. An upper bound on the axion-electron coupling constant of gae ≤ 3.1 x 10-11 (95% CL) is obtained with 62.7 kg days of TeO2 exposure from the CUORICINO experiment. The CUORE-0 data results in a …

Hidden Markov Models a class of statistical models used in various disciplines for understanding speech, finding different types of genes responsible for cancer and much more. In this thesis, Hidden Markov Models are used to obtain hidden states that can correlate the flow changes in the Wakulla Spring Cave. The proportional hazards (PH) model and the accelerated failure time (AFT) model are the two most popular survival models in fitting the right-censored data. The AFT model is a useful alternative to the PH model, particularly when the PH assumption is not satisfied. Grazing removal rate of grasses needs to be determined for various climate conditions to address eco-environmental concerns (e.g., desertification) related to steppe grassland degradation. The conventional approach, which requires survey data on animal species and heads as well as grass consumption per individual animal, is too costly and time-consuming to be applied at a watershed scale.
