Molecularly Imprinted Polymers For Enantiomer Separations And Biomolecular Sensors, Britney Lyn Hebert Jan 2016

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers For Enantiomer Separations And Biomolecular Sensors, Britney Lyn Hebert

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) encompass a wide range of applications by changing the different components, e.g. the template, crosslinker or functional monomers. Of interest among these different applications are separations and sensors. Separations by MIPs traditionally use a chiral pure template but in some cases that chiral pure template may not be available for imprinting. Using chiral (N-α-bismethacyloyl-L-alanine) and achiral (N,O-bisacrylamide ethanolamine) crosslinkers we investigated imprinting of scalemic and racemic template mixtures of Boc-tyrosine enantiomers. The achiral and chiral crosslinkers yielded similar results for the partial separation of enantiomers by scalemic imprinted polymers because separation and recognition are not dependent …

Dynamics Of Land Building And Ecological Succession In A Prograding Deltaic Floodplain, Wax Lake Delta, La, Usa, Azure Elizabeth Bevington

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Deltas are globally important locations of diverse ecosystems, human settlement and economic activity that are threatened by reduced sediment delivery, accelerated sea level rise, and subsidence. In this dissertation I investigated a number of aspects of the ecosystem development over time within an actively prograding river dominated delta along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast. I outlined a conceptual model of deltaic floodplain wetland establishment and succession focused on the vegetated deltaic floodplain ecosystem, which includes subtidal, intertidal and supratidal zones. This was used to guide the experimental design and statistically driven hypothesis testing in order to ascertain the validity …

Advanced Monte Carlo Methods For The Study Of Nucleation, Troy David Loeffler Jan 2016

Advanced Monte Carlo Methods For The Study Of Nucleation, Troy David Loeffler

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The process of nucleation is an essential part of understanding and controlling phase changes in a wide array of systems. In the past theories such as Classical Nucleation Theory have been used as a tool to aid experimentalist in the study of phase mechanisms. However, recent studies have shown in detail that theories such as this are not reliable, given that it can mispredict nucleation rates by several orders of magnitude. As a result newer methodologies must be developed into order to improve upon these deficiencies. In this study we use atomistic simulations to examine the non-ideal deviations from classical …

Optimization Of Rgd Containing Cyclic Peptides Against Αvβ3 Integrin, Yan Wang, Wenwu Xiao, Yonghong Zhang, Leah Meza, Harry Tseng, Yoshikazu Takada, James B. Ames, Kit S. Lam

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

We have previously reported the use of one-bead-one-compound (OBOC) combinatorial technology to develop a disulfide cyclic, Arg-Gly-Asp containing octapeptide LXW7 (cGRGDdvc), that targets αvβ3 integrin with high affinity and specificity (Mol Cancer Ther, 9:2714–23, 2010). αvβ3 integrin is known to be over-expressed in many cancers and in tumor vasculature, and it has been established as a cancer therapeutic target. To further optimize LXW7, we have performed systematic structure activity relationship (SAR) studies. Based on the results, two highly focused OBOC peptide libraries were designed, synthesized and screened against αvβ3 integrin transfected K562 cells. One of the best …

Synthetic Efforts Towards The Synthesis Of Prostaglandin Pgf2a, Amy Marie Pollard Jan 2016

Synthetic Efforts Towards The Synthesis Of Prostaglandin Pgf2a, Amy Marie Pollard

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation describes strategies for synthesizing prostaglandin PGF2α. Our synthetic design creates the stereochemistry needed for the core and side chains of the target prostaglandin PGF2 alpha and PGF2 alpha synthase selective analogues while incorporating iodocyclization desymmetrization of acyclic dienes. A model system for 4-(iodomethyl)-6-methyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one was developed and synthesized for our target compound 4-(2-(benzyloxy)ethyl)-6-(iodomethyl)-5-vinyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one. Both compounds were successfully synthesized providing useful stereocenters for completing the synthesis of prostaglandin PGF2 alpha. Efforts toward total stereochemical control of PGF2α include the partial syntheses of bis-diethylanimedimethylsilane and of (4S,5S)-2-((1E,3E)-penta-1,3-dien-1-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-1,3-ditosyl-1,3,2-diazaborolidine.

© 2016 The Authors. In the heart, the left ventricle pumps blood at higher pressure than the right ventricle. Within the left ventricle, the electromechanical properties of ventricular cardiac myocytes vary transmurally and this may be related to the gradients of stress and strain experienced in vivo across the ventricular wall. Diabetes is also associated with alterations in hemodynamic function. The aim of this study was to investigate shortening and Ca2+ transport in epicardial (EPI) and endocardial (ENDO) left ventricular myocytes in the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat. Shortening, intracellular Ca2+ and L-type Ca2+ current (ICa,L) were measured by video detection, …

Change-Point Detection In The Marginal Distribution Of A Linear Process, Farid El Ktaibi, B. Gail Ivanoff Jan 2016

Change-Point Detection In The Marginal Distribution Of A Linear Process, Farid El Ktaibi, B. Gail Ivanoff

All Works

© 2016, Institute of Mathematical Statistics. All rights reserved. The subject of this paper is the detection of a change in the marginal distribution of a stationary linear process. By considering the marginal distribution, the change-point model can simultaneously incorporate any change in the coefficients and/or the innovations of the linear process. Furthermore, the change point can be random and data dependent. The key is an analysis of the asymptotic behaviour of the sequential empirical process, both with and without a change point. Our results hold under very mild conditions on the existence of any moment of the innovations and …

An Algorithm For Inferring Big Data Objects Correlation Using Word Net, M. Basel Almourad, Mohammed Hussain, Talal Bonny Jan 2016

An Algorithm For Inferring Big Data Objects Correlation Using Word Net, M. Basel Almourad, Mohammed Hussain, Talal Bonny

All Works

© 2016 The Authors. The value of big data comes from its variety where data is collected from various sources. One of the key big data challenges is identifying which data objects are relevant or refer to the same logical entity across various data sources. This challenge is traditionally known as schema matching. Due to big data velocity traditional approaches to data matching can no longer be used. In this paper we present an approach for inferring data objects correlation. We present our algorithm that relies on the objects meta-data and it consults the Word Net thesaurus.

Bloom Filters Optimized Wu-Manber For Intrusion Detection, Monther Aldwairi, Koloud Al-Khamaiseh, Fatima Alharbi, Babar Shah

All Works

With increasing number and severity of attacks, monitoring ingress and egress network traffic is becoming essential everyday task. Intrusion detection systems are the main tools for capturing and searching network traffic for potential harm. Signature -based intrusion detection systems are the most widely used, and they simply use a pattern matching algorithms to locate attack signatures in intercepted network traffic. Pattern matching algorithms are very expensive in terms of running time and memory usage, leaving intrusion detection systems unable to detect attacks in real-time. We propose a Bloom filters optimized Wu-Manber pattern matching algorithm to speed up intrusion detection. The …

Not Only Climate: Interacting Drivers Of Treeline Change In Europe, Dominik Kulakowski, Ignacio Barbeito, Alejandro Casteller, Ryszard J. Kaczka, Peter Bebi Jan 2016

Not Only Climate: Interacting Drivers Of Treeline Change In Europe, Dominik Kulakowski, Ignacio Barbeito, Alejandro Casteller, Ryszard J. Kaczka, Peter Bebi

Geography

Treelines have long been recognized as important ecotones and likely harbingers of climate change. However, over the last century many treelines have been affected not only by global warming, but also by the interactions of climate, forest disturbance and the consequences of abrupt demographic and economic changes. Recent research has increasingly stressed how multiple ecological, biophysical, and human factors interact to shape ecological dynamics. Here we highlight the need to consider interactions among multiple drivers to more completely understand and predict treeline dynamics in Europe.

Factororacle: An Extensible Max External For Investigating Applications Of The Factor Oracle Automaton In Real-Time Music Improvisation, Adam James Wilson Jan 2016

Factororacle: An Extensible Max External For Investigating Applications Of The Factor Oracle Automaton In Real-Time Music Improvisation, Adam James Wilson

Publications and Research

There are several extant software systems designed to generate music in real-time using a factor oracle automaton constructed from the musical input of a human improvisor. The impetus for the design of the factorOracle external is neither a desire to supersede these systems nor introduce novel algorithms for traversing the oracle, but rather to provide a fast, canonical interface for the automaton in Cycling74’s Max and, in future iterations, the Pure Data programming environment. Technical features of the factorOracle software are introduced here.

This dissertation thus focuses on three major aspects: 1) fundamental toxicity understandings of a typical MNMs (zinc oxide nanoparticles), 2) bioactivity evaluations of representative bioactive MNMs, and 3) development of novel micro-probes for high spatial resolution monitoring. Firstly, the NP's concentration, irradiation, hydrodynamic size, and the localized pH, ionic strength, NP zeta-potential as well as dissolved oxygen levels were found correlated with the production …

Asymptotic And Optimal Liouville Properties For Wolff Type Integral Systems, John Villavert Jan 2016

Asymptotic And Optimal Liouville Properties For Wolff Type Integral Systems, John Villavert

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This article examines the properties of positive solutions to fully nonlinear systems of integral equations involving Hardy and Wolff potentials. The first part of the paper establishes an optimal existence result and a Liouville type theorem for the integral systems. Then, the second part examines the decay rates of positive bound states at infinity. In particular, a complete characterization of the asymptotic properties of bounded and decaying solutions is given by showing that such solutions vanish at infinity with two principle rates: the slow decay rates and the fast decay rates. In fact, the two rates can be fully distinguished …

An Application Of The Spectral Theorem To The Laplacian On A Riemannian Manifold, Paul Bracken Jan 2016

An Application Of The Spectral Theorem To The Laplacian On A Riemannian Manifold, Paul Bracken

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

There continues to be great interest in the study of the heat equation on Riemannian manifolds. This may be due to the remarkable more recent work of Patodi [1]. It may also be due in part to the asymptotic expansion of Minakshisundaram and Pleijel. The heat equation involves a parabolic partial differential equation that describes the distribution of heat in a given region over time. This equation has also appears in probability theory to describe random walks. The heat equation is also of importance in Riemannian geometry, topology and applied mathematics.

Carbon Combustion Synthesis of Oxides (CCSO) is a promising method to produce submicron- and nano- sized complex oxides. The CCSO was successfully utilized for producing several complex oxides, a complete theoretical model including the sample porosity, fl ow parameters and reaction energetics is needed to predict the combustion parameters for CCSO. In this work, we studied the ignition temperature and combustion wave axial temperature distribution, activation energy, combustion heat and thermal losses for a typical CCSO synthesis for cylindrical samples of Ni-Zn ferrites with high (>85%) porosity. We developed a two level combustion model of chemically active nano-dispersed mixture, …

A Saddlepoint Approximation To Left-Tailed Hypothesis Tests Of Variance For Non-Normal Populations, Tyler L. Grimes Jan 2016

A Saddlepoint Approximation To Left-Tailed Hypothesis Tests Of Variance For Non-Normal Populations, Tyler L. Grimes

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When the variance of a single population needs to be assessed, the well-known chi-squared test of variance is often used but relies heavily on its normality assumption. For non-normal populations, few alternative tests have been developed to conduct left tailed hypothesis tests of variance. This thesis outlines a method for generating new test statistics using a saddlepoint approximation. Several novel test statistics are proposed. The type-I error rates and power of each test are evaluated using a Monte Carlo simulation study. One of the proposed test statistics, R_gamma2, controls type-I error rates better than existing tests, while having comparable power. …

Vulnerabililty Analysis Of Multi-Factor Authentication Protocols, Keith Garrett Jan 2016

Vulnerabililty Analysis Of Multi-Factor Authentication Protocols, Keith Garrett

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the author hypothesizes that the use of computationally intensive mathematical operations in password authentication protocols can lead to security vulnerabilities in those protocols. In order to test this hypothesis: 1. A generalized algorithm for cryptanalysis was formulated to perform a clogging attack (a formof denial of service) on protocols that use computationally intensive modular exponentiation to guarantee security. 2. This technique was then applied to cryptanalyze four recent password authentication protocols, to determine their susceptibility to the clogging attack. The protocols analyzed in this thesis differ in their usage of factors (smart cards, memory drives, etc.) or …

A New Right Tailed Test Of The Ratio Of Variances, Elizabeth Rochelle Lesser Jan 2016

A New Right Tailed Test Of The Ratio Of Variances, Elizabeth Rochelle Lesser

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It is important to be able to compare variances efficiently and accurately regardless of the parent populations. This study proposes a new right tailed test for the ratio of two variances using the Edgeworth’s expansion. To study the Type I error rate and Power performance, simulation was performed on the new test with various combinations of symmetric and skewed distributions. It is found to have more controlled Type I error rates than the existing tests. Additionally, it also has sufficient power. Therefore, the newly derived test provides a good robust alternative to the already existing methods.

Building Designers' Perception And The Effect On Sustainability In Malawi, Lloyd Ndau Jan 2016

Building Designers' Perception And The Effect On Sustainability In Malawi, Lloyd Ndau

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Environmental sustainability in buildings is an important part of preserving the environment and reducing climate change. The increasing amount of physical infrastructure systems in Malawi has not been accompanied by policy-makers clearly understanding perceptions and attitudinal behaviors of building designers to promote environmental sustainability. Some building designers in Malawi might not be practicing sustainability innovations adequately, requiring more research to understand their perceptions and behaviors. The purpose of this mixed methods sequential and explanatory study was to explore how building designers' behaviors relate to the implementation of sustainability innovations in Malawi. Ajzen's theory of planned behavior explaining how attitudinal behaviors …

A Study Of Alterations In Dna Epigenetic Modifications (5mc And 5hmc) And Gene Expression Influenced By Simulated Microgravity In Human Lymphoblastoid Cells, Basudev Chowdhury, Arun Seetharam, Zhiping Wang, Yunlong Liu, Amy C. Lossie, Jyothi Thimmapuram Jan 2016

A Study Of Alterations In Dna Epigenetic Modifications (5mc And 5hmc) And Gene Expression Influenced By Simulated Microgravity In Human Lymphoblastoid Cells, Basudev Chowdhury, Arun Seetharam, Zhiping Wang, Yunlong Liu, Amy C. Lossie, Jyothi Thimmapuram

Cyber Center Publications

Cells alter their gene expression in response to exposure to various environmental changes. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation are believed to regulate the alterations in gene expression patterns. In vitro and in vivo studies have documented changes in cellular proliferation, cytoskeletal remodeling, signal transduction, bone mineralization and immune deficiency under the influence of microgravity conditions experienced in space. However microgravity induced changes in the epigenome have not been well characterized. In this study we have used Next-generation Sequencing (NGS) to profile ground-based “simulated” microgravity induced changes on DNA methylation (5-methylcytosine or 5mC), hydroxymethylation (5-hydroxymethylcytosine or 5hmC), and simultaneous gene …

Measurement Of Non-Covalent Aromatic Interactions Using Molecular Balances, Jung Wun Hwang Jan 2016

Measurement Of Non-Covalent Aromatic Interactions Using Molecular Balances, Jung Wun Hwang

Theses and Dissertations

Non-covalent aromatic interactions govern many of the unique structures and properties of biological and synthetic molecules. Despite the importance of these interactions, their weak nature makes it challenging to study the interactions. To accurately measure weak non-covalent aromatic interactions in solution, we have designed molecular torsion balances that provide a quantitative measure of non-covalent intramolecular interaction strengths. First, we investigated the importance of electrostatic interactions in aromatic interactions. Substituent effects were strongly correlated with electrostatic Hammett parameters. In addition, the substituent effects were additive and showed significant direct substituent-arene interactions that support the recent direct substituent effect model. Next, the …

Forensic Characterization Of Dyes From Synthetic Textile Fibers Exposed To Outdoor And Laundering Effects By Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography And Spectral Analysis, Molly Rebecca Burnip Jan 2016

Forensic Characterization Of Dyes From Synthetic Textile Fibers Exposed To Outdoor And Laundering Effects By Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography And Spectral Analysis, Molly Rebecca Burnip

Theses and Dissertations

Textile fibers found in an investigation are trace evidence that can connect a suspect to a victim or crime scene. Examination involves comparison of the color and morphology of a questioned fiber to a known fiber with optical spectroscopy. Fibers are considered class evidence, so evaluating more characteristics increases their significance as evidence if a match cannot be excluded. Acrylic, nylon, and polyester are textile polymers that require different extraction solvents based on the polymer chemistry. Methods have been developed for UPLC analysis of basic dyes on acrylic, acid on nylon, and disperse dyes on polyester. After microextraction from single …

The Reflected-Shifted-Truncated-Gamma Distribution For Negatively Skewed Survival Data With Application To Pediatric Nephrotic Syndrome, Sophia D. Waymyers Jan 2016

The Reflected-Shifted-Truncated-Gamma Distribution For Negatively Skewed Survival Data With Application To Pediatric Nephrotic Syndrome, Sophia D. Waymyers

Theses and Dissertations

Negatively skewed survival data arise occasionally in public health fields and in statistical research. Standard distributions such as the exponential, generalized F, generalized gamma, Gompertz, log-logistic, lognormal, Rayleigh, and Weibull distributions are not always well suited to this data. The primary goal of this dissertation is to find a viable alternative for modeling negatively skewed survival data such as the time to first remission for pediatric patients with frequently relapsing or steroid dependent nephrotic syndrome.

We begin with a brief introduction of survival analysis and the nature of pediatric nephrotic syndrome. A meta-analysis on atopy and pediatric nephrotic syndrome using …

Semiparametric Regression Analysis Of Panel Count Data And Interval-Censored Failure Time Data, Bin Yao Jan 2016

Semiparametric Regression Analysis Of Panel Count Data And Interval-Censored Failure Time Data, Bin Yao

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation discusses three important research topics on semiparametric regression analysis of panel count data and interval-censored data. Both types of data arise commonly in real-life studies in many fields such as epidemiology, social science, and medical research. In these studies, subjects are usually examined multiple times at periodical or irregular follow-up examinations. For panel count data, the response variable is the counts of some recurrent events, whose exact occurrence times are usually unknown. For interval-censored data, the response variable is the time to some events of interest, often called survival time or failure time, and the exact response time …

A Highly Sensitive Underwater Video System For Use In Turbid Aquaculture Ponds, Chin-Chang Hung, Shih-Chieh Tsao, Kuo-Hao Huang, Jia-Pu Jang, Hsu-Kuang Chang, Fred C. Dobbs

OES Faculty Publications

The turbid, low-light waters characteristic of aquaculture ponds have made it difficult or impossible for previous video cameras to provide clear imagery of the ponds' benthic habitat. We developed a highly sensitive, underwater video system (UVS) for this particular application and tested it in shrimp ponds having turbidities typical of those in southern Taiwan. The system's high-quality video stream and images, together with its camera capacity (up to nine cameras), permit in situ observations of shrimp feeding behavior, shrimp size and internal anatomy, and organic matter residues on pond sediments. The UVS can operate continuously and be focused remotely, a …
