Transmission Scheduling Based On A New Conflict Graph Model For Multicast In Multihop Wireless Networks, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye Jan 2012

Transmission Scheduling Based On A New Conflict Graph Model For Multicast In Multihop Wireless Networks, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In multicast applications, the end-to-end delay from the source to a group member is determined by the multicast tree topology and the waiting time at each relay node. This paper addresses when the multicast tree is given how to schedule wireless nodes for transmission so that network delay is minimized. We first model the conflict relation among wireless transmissions in a conflict graph, and then we compute a transmission schedule based on an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model. Since solving ILP problem is NP-hard, a heuristic is designed to solve the ILP problem. the resulting schedule is conflict-free, which is …

Sieve Bootstrap Based Prediction Intervals And Unit Root Tests For Time Series, Maduka Rupasinghe Jan 2012

Sieve Bootstrap Based Prediction Intervals And Unit Root Tests For Time Series, Maduka Rupasinghe

Doctoral Dissertations

"The application of the sieve bootstrap procedure, which resamples residuals obtained by fitting a finite autoregressvie (AR) approximation to empirical time series, to obtaining prediction intervals for integrated, long-memory, and seasonal time series as well as constructing a test for seasonal unit roots, is considered. The advantage of this resampling method is that it does not require knowledge about the underlying process generating a given time series and has been shown to work well for ARMA processes. We extend the application of the sieve bootstrap to ARIMA and FARIMA processes. The asymptotic properties of the sieve bootstrap prediction intervals for …

Investigation Of Biomarkers For Noninvasive Early Diagnosis Of Cancer, Sanjeewa Bandara Gamagedara Jan 2012

Investigation Of Biomarkers For Noninvasive Early Diagnosis Of Cancer, Sanjeewa Bandara Gamagedara

Doctoral Dissertations

"Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, and deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue rising, with an estimated 12 million deaths in 2030. Cancer occurs when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. It develops very rapidly, and early diagnosis offers a greater chance of successful treatment and a higher survival rate. Biomarkers are good potential tools for early diagnosis. The main hypothesis of this study is that the levels of certain metabolites present in human urine can indicate the current or future behavior of cancer. Therefore, these studies focused …

An Algebraic Classification Of Entangled States, Roman V. Buniy, Thomas W. Kephart Jan 2012

An Algebraic Classification Of Entangled States, Roman V. Buniy, Thomas W. Kephart

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We provide a classification of entangled states that uses new discrete entanglement invariants. The invariants are defined by algebraic properties of linear maps associated with the states. We prove a theorem on a correspondence between the invariants and sets of equivalent classes of entangled states. The new method works for an arbitrary finite number of finite-dimensional state subspaces. As an application of the method, we considered a large selection of cases of three subspaces of various dimensions. We also obtain an entanglement classification of four qubits, where we find 27 fundamental sets of classes.

Toward Solving The Cosmological Constant Problem By Embedding, Roman V. Buniy, Thomas W. Kephart Jan 2012

Toward Solving The Cosmological Constant Problem By Embedding, Roman V. Buniy, Thomas W. Kephart

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The typical scalar field theory has a cosmological constant problem. We propose a generic mechanism by which this problem is avoided at tree level by embedding the theory into a larger theory. The metric and the scalar field coupling constants in the original theory do not need to be fine-tuned, while the extra scalar field parameters and the metric associated with the extended theory are fine-tuned dynamically. Hence, no fine-tuning of parameters in the full Lagrangian is needed for the vacuum energy in the new physical system to vanish at tree level. The cosmological constant problem can be solved if …

Forensic Analysis Of Social Networking Applications On Mobile Devices, Noora Al Mutawa, Ibrahim Baggili, Andrew Marrington

All Works

The increased use of social networking applications on smartphones makes these devices a goldmine for forensic investigators. Potential evidence can be held on these devices and recovered with the right tools and examination methods. This paper focuses on conducting forensic analyses on three widely used social networking applications on smartphones: Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. The tests were conducted on three popular smartphones: BlackBerrys, iPhones, and Android phones. The tests consisted of installing the social networking applications on each device, conducting common user activities through each application, acquiring a forensically sound logical image of each device, and performing manual forensic analysis …

Economics And Finance On Time Scales, Julius Severin Heim Jan 2012

Economics And Finance On Time Scales, Julius Severin Heim

Doctoral Dissertations

"This thesis consists of 6 papers that investigate models in economics and finance based on so-called dynamic equations on time scales. The first paper covers multiplier-accelerator models that can be described by linear second-order dynamic equations. The possibility of taxes as well as the possibility of foreign trade is taken into consideration. The second paper discusses cobweb models, which describe cyclical supply and demand in markets, where the supply is determined before the observation of the price. Cobweb models that can be formulated with first-order linear, second-order linear, and nonlinear dynamic equations are being considered. The third and fourth papers …

Theoretical Studies Of Few-Body Problems, Uttam Chowdhury Jan 2012

Theoretical Studies Of Few-Body Problems, Uttam Chowdhury

Doctoral Dissertations

"Heavy ion collisions with atomic and molecular targets produce many outcomes. The Schrödinger equation is not analytically soluble for more than two mutually interacting particles. As a result, theory must resort to using approximations, the validity of which is determined by comparison with experiment. This work is focused on finding better approximations to describe ionization and capture processes in proton collisions.

Proton-impact ionization of molecular hydrogen is treated as a 3-body problem. Usually the target is treated as an atomic target and the results are multiplied by an ad hoc factor to account for the molecular structure. Measured cross sections …

A Performance Comparison Of Hypervisors For Cloud Computing, Suganya Sridharan Jan 2012

A Performance Comparison Of Hypervisors For Cloud Computing, Suganya Sridharan

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The virtualization of IT infrastructure enables the consolidation and pooling of IT resources so that they can be shared over diverse applications to offset the limitation of shrinking resources and growing business needs. Virtualization provides a logical abstraction of physical computing resources and creates computing environments that are not restricted by physical configuration or implementation. Virtualization is very important for cloud computing because the delivery of services is simplified by providing a platform for optimizing complex IT resources in a scalable manner, which makes cloud computing more cost effective.

Hypervisor plays an important role in the virtualization of hardware. It …

Colordots: An Intersection Analysis Resistant Graphical Password Scheme For The Prevention Of Shoulder-Surfing Attack, Jim Littleton Jan 2012

Colordots: An Intersection Analysis Resistant Graphical Password Scheme For The Prevention Of Shoulder-Surfing Attack, Jim Littleton

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In an increasingly mobile world, the combination of mobile computing devices, publicly accessible Wi-Fi hotspots, and camera phones pose a significant threat to alphanumeric passwords in public environments. Graphical passwords, introduced as an alternative to alphanumerical passwords, help prevent successful shoulder-surfing attacks – covertly observing or recording a password login session, however, most cannot prevent intersection analysis on the data collected through shoulder-surfing. ColorDots is a new graphical password scheme designed to be easy to use and learn, to prevent successful shoulder-surfing attacks, and to hinder intersection analysis. A software implementation of ColorDots is tested, and the results analyzed. This …

Improving The Knowledge-Based Expert System Lifecycle, Lucien Millette Jan 2012

Improving The Knowledge-Based Expert System Lifecycle, Lucien Millette

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge-based expert systems are used to enhance and automate manual processes through the use of a knowledge base and modern computing power. The traditional methodology for creating knowledge-based expert systems has many commonly encountered issues that can prevent successful implementations. Complications during the knowledge acquisition phase can prevent a knowledge-based expert system from functioning properly. Furthermore, the time and resources required to maintain a knowledge-based expert system once implemented can become problematic. There are several concepts that can be integrated into a proposed methodology to improve the knowledge-based expert system lifecycle to create a more efficient process. These methods are …

Synthesis And Applications Of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids And Their Polymer Derivatives, Woon Su Oh Jan 2012

Synthesis And Applications Of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids And Their Polymer Derivatives, Woon Su Oh

Doctoral Dissertations

"Imidazolium-based ionic liquids have been increasingly used as green solvents to replace the volatile and relatively toxic organic solvents, in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, materials science, nano materials, lithium ion batteries, and separation technology. Section 1 describes the modulating effect of the imidazolium based room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) on the critical micelle concentrations (CMC) of surfactants. CMC of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant, has been investigated in aqueous solutions of a variety of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). CMC values decrease with increasing alkyl chain-length and with fluorinated side chains on the imidazole moiety. In section 2, …

Characterization Of Wave Transport In Non-Conservative Media With Random And Correlated Disorder, Benjamin Henry Payne Jan 2012

Characterization Of Wave Transport In Non-Conservative Media With Random And Correlated Disorder, Benjamin Henry Payne

Doctoral Dissertations

"Passive quasi-one-dimensional random media exhibit one of the three regimes of transport - ballistic, diffusive, or Anderson localization - depending on system size. The ballistic and diffusion approximations assumes particle transport, whereas Anderson Localization occurs when wave self-interference effects are dominant. When the system contains absorption or gain, then how the regimes can be characterized becomes unclear. By investigating theoretically and numerically the ratio of transmission to energy in a random medium in one dimension, we show this parameter can be used to characterize localization in random media with gain. Non-conservative media implies a second dimension for the transport parameter …

Evolutionary Computing Driven Search Based Software Testing And Correction, Joshua Lee Wilkerson Jan 2012

Evolutionary Computing Driven Search Based Software Testing And Correction, Joshua Lee Wilkerson

Doctoral Dissertations

"For a given program, testing, locating the errors identified, and correcting those errors is a critical, yet expensive process. The field of Search Based Software Engineering (SBSE) addresses these phases by formulating them as search problems. This dissertation addresses these challenging problems through the use of two complimentary evolutionary computing based systems. The first one is the Fitness Guided Fault Localization (FGFL) system, which novelly uses a specification based fitness function to perform fault localization. The second is the Coevolutionary Automated Software Correction (CASC) system, which employs a variety of evolutionary computing techniques to perform testing, correction, and verification of …

Periodic Q-Difference Equations, Rotchana Chieochan Jan 2012

Periodic Q-Difference Equations, Rotchana Chieochan

Doctoral Dissertations

"The concept of periodic functions defined on the real numbers or on the integers is a classical topic and has been studied intensively, yielding numerous applications in every kind of science. It is of importance that the real numbers and the integers are closed with respect to addition. However, for a number q > 1, the so-called q-time scale, i.e., the set of nonnegative integer powers of q, is not closed with respect to addition, and therefore it was not possible to define periodic functions on the q-time scale in an obvious way. In this thesis, this important open problem has …

Organic And Composite Aerogels Through Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization (Romp), Dhairyashil Mohite Jan 2012

Organic And Composite Aerogels Through Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization (Romp), Dhairyashil Mohite

Doctoral Dissertations

"Aerogels are open-cell nanoporous materials, unique in terms of low density, low thermal conductivity, low dielectric constants and high acoustic attenuation. Those exceptional properties stem from their complex hierarchical solid framework (agglomerates of porous, fractal secondary nanoparticles), but they also come at a cost: low mechanical strength. This issue has been resolved by crosslinking silica aerogels with organic polymers. The crosslinking polymer has been assumed to form a conformal coating on the surface of the skeletal framework by covalent bridging elementary building blocks. However, "assuming" is not enough: for correlating nanostructure with bulk material properties, it is important to know …

Chelating Compounds As Potential Flash Rust Inhibitors And Melamine & Aziridine Cure Of Acrylic Colloidal Unimolecular Polymers (Cups), Jigar K. Mistry Jan 2012

Chelating Compounds As Potential Flash Rust Inhibitors And Melamine & Aziridine Cure Of Acrylic Colloidal Unimolecular Polymers (Cups), Jigar K. Mistry

Doctoral Dissertations

Waterborne coatings on ferrous substrates usually show flash rusting which decreases the adhesion of the coating and the corrosion products can form a stain. Chelating compounds were investigated as potential flash rust inhibitors. Compounds being evaluated include amine alcohols, diamines and sulfur containing amines. A new corrosion inhibitor 2,5-bis(thioaceticacid)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (H2ADTZ) was synthesized and its performance characteristics were evaluated. It was noted that the observed structure of 1,3,4-thiadiazolidine-2,5-dithione (also known as 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD or DMcT)) has been previously reported in three different tautomeric forms including -dithiol and -dithione. The relative stability of each form as well as the synthesis and characterization …

Complex Scaling Behavior In Animal Foraging Patterns, Prabhavi Kaushalya Premachandra Jan 2012

Complex Scaling Behavior In Animal Foraging Patterns, Prabhavi Kaushalya Premachandra

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation attempts to answer questions from two different areas of biology, ecology and neuroscience, using physics-based techniques. In Section 2, suitability of three competing random walk models is tested to describe the emergent movement patterns of two species of primates. The truncated power law (power law with exponential cut off) is the most suitable random walk model that characterizes the emergent movement patterns of these primates. In Section 3, an agent-based model is used to simulate search behavior in different environments (landscapes) to investigate the impact of the resource landscape on the optimal foraging movement patterns of deterministic foragers. …

Lifetime Prediction And Confidence Bounds In Accelerated Degradation Testing For Lognormal Response Distributions With An Arrhenius Rate Relationship, Steven Michael Alferink Jan 2012

Lifetime Prediction And Confidence Bounds In Accelerated Degradation Testing For Lognormal Response Distributions With An Arrhenius Rate Relationship, Steven Michael Alferink

Doctoral Dissertations

"Determining the lifetime of a product is an important component of quality assurance. Traditional life testing methods are infeasible for products that have been designed to have a very long lifetime because they require a lengthy testing period. An alternative method is accelerated degradation testing, where a response variable determining the usability of the product is measured over time under multiple accelerating stress levels. The resulting data are then used to predict the life distribution of the product under the design stress level. In this dissertation, several methods are proposed and studied for obtaining prediction bounds for the lifetime of …

Effectiveness Of Grass Filters In Reducing Phosphorus And Sediment Runoff, Ahmed Al-Wadaey, Charles S. Wortmann, Thomas G. Franti, Charles A. Shapiro, Dean E. Eisenhauer

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Surface water contamination can often be reduced by passing runoff water through perennial grass filters. Research was conducted in 2006 to 2008 to evaluate the size of cool season grass filters consisting primarily of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb) with some orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata L.) relative to drainage area size in reducing runoff sediment and phosphorus (P). The soil was Pohocco silt loam Typic Eutrochrepts with a median slope of 5.5%. The grass filters occupying 1.1 and 4.3% of the plot area were compared with no filter with four replications. The filters were planted in the V-shaped …

Bicomplex Numbers And Their Elementary Functions, M. E. Luna-Elizarrarás, M. Shapiro, Daniele C. Struppa, Adrian Vajiac Jan 2012

Bicomplex Numbers And Their Elementary Functions, M. E. Luna-Elizarrarás, M. Shapiro, Daniele C. Struppa, Adrian Vajiac

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we introduce the algebra of bicomplex numbers as a generalization of the field of complex numbers. We describe how to define elementary functions in such an algebra (polynomials, exponential functions, and trigonometric functions) as well as their inverse functions (roots, logarithms, inverse trigonometric functions). Our goal is to show that a function theory on bicomplex numbers is, in some sense, a better generalization of the theory of holomorphic functions of one variable, than the classical theory of holomorphic functions in two complex variables.

In this paper we develop and extend some techniques introduced in [1] to find integral conditions for the vanishing of the cohomology of open bounded sets in Cn with values in the sheaf of holomorphic functions.

Everything Is Entangled, Roman V. Buniy, Stephen D. H. Hsu Jan 2012

Everything Is Entangled, Roman V. Buniy, Stephen D. H. Hsu

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We show that big bang cosmology implies a high degree of entanglement of particles in the universe. In fact, a typical particle is entangled with many particles far outside our horizon. However, the entanglement is spread nearly uniformly so that two randomly chosen particles are unlikely to be directly entangled with each other - the reduced density matrix describing any pair is likely to be separable.

New Topological C-Algebras With Applications In Linear Systems Theory, Daniel Alpay, Guy Salomon Jan 2012

New Topological C-Algebras With Applications In Linear Systems Theory, Daniel Alpay, Guy Salomon

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Motivated by the Schwartz space of tempered distributions S′ and the Kondratiev space of stochastic distributions S−1 we define a wide family of nuclear spaces which are increasing unions of (duals of) Hilbert spaces H′p,p∈N, with decreasing norms |⋅|p. The elements of these spaces are functions on a free commutative monoid. We characterize those rings in this family which satisfy an inequality of the form |f∗g|p≤A(p−q)|f|q|g|p for all p≥q+d, where * denotes the convolution in the monoid, A(p−q) is a strictly positive number and d is a fixed natural number (in this case we obtain commutative topological C-algebras). Such an …

Analysis And Synthesis Of Metadata Goals For Scientific Data, Craig Willis, Jane Greenberg, Hollie C. White Jan 2012

Analysis And Synthesis Of Metadata Goals For Scientific Data, Craig Willis, Jane Greenberg, Hollie C. White

Faculty Scholarship

The proliferation of discipline-specific metadata schemes contributes to artificial barriers that can impede interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The authors considered this problem by examining the domains, objectives, and architectures of nine metadata schemes used to document scientific data in the physical, life, and social sciences. They used a mixed-methods content analysis and Greenberg’s (2005) metadata objectives, principles, domains, and architectural layout (MODAL) framework, and derived 22 metadata-related goals from textual content describing each metadata scheme. Relationships are identified between the domains (e.g., scientific discipline and type of data) and the categories of scheme objectives. For each strong correlation …

The Cumulative Impact Of Unemployment On Risks Of Acute Myocardial Infarction, Guangya Liu, Matthew E. Dupree, Linda K. George, Eric D. Peterson Jan 2012

The Cumulative Impact Of Unemployment On Risks Of Acute Myocardial Infarction, Guangya Liu, Matthew E. Dupree, Linda K. George, Eric D. Peterson

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Employment instability is a major source of strain affecting an increasing number of adults in the United States. Little is known about the cumulative effect of multiple job losses and unemployment on the risks for acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

Methods: We investigated the associations between different dimensions of unemployment and the risks for AMI in US adults in a prospective cohort study of adults (N=13 451) aged 51 to 75 years in the Health and Retirement Study with biennial follow-up interviews from 1992 to 2010. Unadjusted rates of age-specific AMI were used to demonstrate observed differences by employment status, …
