Coverings Of Lie Groupoids, İlhan İçen, M. Habi̇l Gürsoy, A. Fati̇h Özcan Jan 2011

Coverings Of Lie Groupoids, İlhan İçen, M. Habi̇l Gürsoy, A. Fati̇h Özcan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this work we constitute the category of coverings of the Lie fundamental groupoid associated with a connected smooth manifold. We show that this category is equivalent to the category of universal coverings of a connected smooth manifold. In addition, we prove the equivalence of the category of coverings of a Lie groupoid and the category of actions of this Lie groupoid on a connected smooth manifold. Also we present two side results related to actions of Lie groupoids on the manifolds and coverings of Lie groupoids.

Invariant Subspace Problem For Positive L-Weakly And M-Weakly Compact Operators, Cevri̇ye Tonyali, Erdal Bayram Jan 2011

Invariant Subspace Problem For Positive L-Weakly And M-Weakly Compact Operators, Cevri̇ye Tonyali, Erdal Bayram

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we show that positive L-weakly and M-weakly compact operators on some real Banach lattices have a non-trivial closed invariant subspace. Also, we prove that any positive L-weakly (or M-weakly) compact operator T:E \rightarrow E\ has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace if there exists a Dunford-Pettis operator S:E \rightarrow E satisfying 0 \leq T \leq S, where E is Banach lattice.

A Fixed Point Theorem For A Compact And Connected Set In Hilbert Space, Hülya Duru Jan 2011

A Fixed Point Theorem For A Compact And Connected Set In Hilbert Space, Hülya Duru

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let (H,) be a real Hilbert space and let K be a compact and connected subset of H. We show that every continuous mapping T:K \rightarrow K satisfying a mild condition has a fixed point.

Probabilities For Absolute Irreducibility Of Multivariate Polynomials By The Polytope Method, Fati̇h Koyuncu, Ferruh Özbudak Jan 2011

Probabilities For Absolute Irreducibility Of Multivariate Polynomials By The Polytope Method, Fati̇h Koyuncu, Ferruh Özbudak

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Motivated by the Dubickas's result in [1], which computes the probability of the irreducible polynomials by Eisenstein's criterion for some families of polynomials in Z[x], we calculate the probabilities which represent the ratio of absolutely irreducible multivariate polynomials by the polytope method in some families of polynomials over arbitrary fields.

On Generalized (\Alpha,\Beta)-Derivations Of Semiprime Rings, Faisal Ali, Muhammad Anwar Chaudhry Jan 2011

On Generalized (\Alpha,\Beta)-Derivations Of Semiprime Rings, Faisal Ali, Muhammad Anwar Chaudhry

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We investigate some properties of generalized (\alpha,\beta)-derivations on semiprime rings. Among some other results, we show that if g is a generalized (\alpha,\beta)-derivation, with associated (\alpha,\beta)-derivation \delta, on a semiprime ring R such that [g(x),\alpha(x)]=0 for all x\in R, then \delta(x)[y,z]=0 for all x,y,z\in R and \delta is central. We also show that if \alpha,\nu,\tau are endomorphisms and \beta,\mu are automorphisms of a semiprime ring R and if R has a generalized (\alpha,\beta)-derivation g, with associated (\alpha,\beta)-derivation \delta, such that g([\mu(x),w(y)])=[\nu(x),w(y)]_{\alpha,\tau}, where w:R\rightarrow R is commutativity preserving, then [y,z]\delta(w(p))=0 for all y,z,p\in R.

Combinatorial Results For Order-Preserving And Order-Decreasing Transformations, Gonca Ayik, Hayrullah Ayik, Meti̇n Koç

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let O_n and C_n be the semigroup of all order-preserving transformations and of all order-preserving and order-decreasing transformations on the finite set X_n={1,2,\ldots ,n}, respectively. Let \fix (\alpha )={x\in X_n:x\alpha =x} for any transformation \alpha. In this paper, for any Y\subseteq X_n, we find the cardinalities of the sets O_{n,Y}={\alpha\in O_n:\fix (\alpha)=Y} and C_{n,Y}={\alpha\in C_n: \fix (\alpha )=Y}. Moreover, we find the numbers of transformations of O_n and C_n with r fixed points.

Gpq Modules And Generalized Armendariz Modules, Liang Zhao, Xiaosheng Zhu Jan 2011

Gpq Modules And Generalized Armendariz Modules, Liang Zhao, Xiaosheng Zhu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let M_R be a right R-module. We introduce the concept of right generalized p.q.-Baer modules (or simply, right GPQ modules) to extend the notion of right p.q.-Baer modules. We study on the relationship between the GPQ property of a module M_R and various quasi-Armendariz properties. We prove that every right GPQ module is a quasi-Armendariz module. As a sequence, we obtain a general form of some known results considering the p.q.Baer property of a ring, some known results are extended. Moreover, we prove that for the formal triangular ring R constructed from a pair of rings S, T and a …

Generalized Derivations On Lie Ideals In Prime Rings, Öznur Gölbaşi, Emi̇ne Koç Jan 2011

Generalized Derivations On Lie Ideals In Prime Rings, Öznur Gölbaşi, Emi̇ne Koç

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let R be a prime ring with characteristic different from two, U a nonzero Lie ideal of R and f be a generalized derivation associated with d. We prove the following results: (i) If [u,f(u)] \in Z, for all u \in U, then U \subset Z. (ii) (f,d) and (g,h) be two generalized derivations of R such that f(u)v=ug(v), for all u,v \in U, then U \subset Z. (iii) f([u,v])=\pm \lbrack u,v], for all u,v\in U, then U \subset Z.

A Boundary Value Problem For Bitsadze Equation In Matrix Form, Sezayi̇ Hizliyel, Mehmet Çağliyan Jan 2011

A Boundary Value Problem For Bitsadze Equation In Matrix Form, Sezayi̇ Hizliyel, Mehmet Çağliyan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this work, we investigate the solvability of the problem \frac{\partial^2w}{\partial \overline\phi ^2}=f Re\{i\phi(z)w(z)\}=\gamma_1(z),Rew_{\overline\phi}(z)=\gamma_2(z) z \in \partial D in the unit disk of complex plane. Here f , \gamma_1 and \gamma_2 are given m \times s-complex matrix-valued functions; f\in L^{p} (\overline{D}), \gamma_1, \gamma_2 \in C(\partial D) and \phi is a generating solution for Q-holomorphic functions.

Blow-Up Time For A Semilinear Parabolic Equation With Variable Reaction, Theodore Kouassi Boni, Remi Kouadio Kouakou Jan 2011

Blow-Up Time For A Semilinear Parabolic Equation With Variable Reaction, Theodore Kouassi Boni, Remi Kouadio Kouakou

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we address the solution of a semilinear heat equation with variable reaction subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions and nonnegative initial datum. Under some assumptions, we show that the solution of the above problem blows up in a finite time, and its blow-up time goes to that of the solution of a certain differential equation. Finally, we give some numerical results to illustrate our analysis.

Order Continuous Operators On Cd_0(K,E) And Cd_W(K,E)-Spaces, Faruk Polat Jan 2011

Order Continuous Operators On Cd_0(K,E) And Cd_W(K,E)-Spaces, Faruk Polat

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In [2], Alpay and Ercan characterized order continuous duals of spaces CD_0(K, E) and CD_w(K, E) where K is a compact Hausdorff space without isolated points and E is a Banach lattice. In this note, we generalize their results to an arbitrary Dedekind complete Banach lattice F, that is to say, we characterize order continuous operators on these spaces taking values in an arbitrary Dedekind complete Banach lattice F.

Judges' Awareness, Understanding, And Application Of Digital Evidence, Gary C. Kessler Jan 2011

Judges' Awareness, Understanding, And Application Of Digital Evidence, Gary C. Kessler

Security Studies & International Affairs - Daytona Beach

"As digital evidence grows in both volume and importance in criminal and civil courts, judges need to fairly and justly evaluate the merits of the offered evidence. To do so, judges need a general understanding of the underlying technologies and applications from which digital evidence is derived. Due to the relative newness of the computer forensics field, there have been few studies on the use of digital forensic evidence and none about judges’ relationship with digital evidence. This paper describes a recent study, using grounded theory methods, into judges’ awareness, knowledge, and perceptions of digital evidence. This study is the …

Class Discovery And Prediction Of Tumor With Microarray Data, Bo Liu

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Current microarray technology is able take a single tissue sample to construct an Affymetrix oglionucleotide array containing (estimated) expression levels of thousands of different genes for that tissue. The objective is to develop a more systematic approach to cancer classification based on Affymetrix oglionucleotide microarrays. For this purpose, I studied published colon cancer microarray data. Colon cancer, with 655,000 deaths worldwide per year, has become the fourth most common form of cancer in the United States and the third leading cause of cancer - related death in the Western world. This research has been focuses in two areas: class discovery, …

Housing With Support Marketing Study Tool, Gary M. Travis Jan 2011

Housing With Support Marketing Study Tool, Gary M. Travis

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Housing for persons with serious mental illness (SMI) that is permanent, affordable, and supportive is very limited because the availability of these resources is inadequate and subject to significant demand by persons that are disabled or on a limited income. The limited access to housing for persons with SMI is contributing to homelessness and Minnesota has seen a steady rise since 1994 in the rate and number of people that are homeless and coping with mental illness (Wilder Research, 2010a). While some of the impact of disability, homelessness, and limited affordable housing access is known, what remains uncertain is a …

The Effects Of Invasion By Reed Canarygrass (Phalaris Arundinacea) On Avian Communities And Nesting Success In Minnesota Wetlands, Emily J. Hutchins Jan 2011

The Effects Of Invasion By Reed Canarygrass (Phalaris Arundinacea) On Avian Communities And Nesting Success In Minnesota Wetlands, Emily J. Hutchins

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Invasive plants are a primary contributor to loss of biodiversity worldwide. In southern Minnesota, many wetlands have been invaded by reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea). The current perception among ecologists and resource managers is that these wetlands are of little value to wildlife, yet little is known about the effects on birds of the widespread conversion of diverse wetlands to apparent monocultures of P. arundinacea. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of P. arundinaceamediated changes in the wetland plant community on avian communities and nesting success. During 2006 and 2007, I studied four diverse sedge wetlands paired …

Analysis Of The Genetic Structure Of Bithynia Tentaculata Snail Populations In Wisconsin And Minnesota, Sarah J. Whalen Jan 2011

Analysis Of The Genetic Structure Of Bithynia Tentaculata Snail Populations In Wisconsin And Minnesota, Sarah J. Whalen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In recent years, there have been tens of thousands of waterfowl mortalities in Wisconsin and Minnesota. An invasive species of snail, Bithynia tentaculata, is a host for the trematode parasites (Cyathocotyle bushiensis and Sphaeridiotrema globulus) that have caused these deaths. A microsatellite-enriched genomic library was detected using DNA from a B. tentaculata specimen from Lake Onalaska (Pool 7 of the Upper Mississippi River). Seven polymorphic microsatellite loci were used to genotype snails collected from Lake Butte des Morts, Shawano Lake, and Lake Onalaska in Wisconsin, as well as Lake Winnibigoshish in Minnesota. The genetic diversity of each population was measured …

Godel's Incompleteness Theorems, Jessica Dickson Jan 2011

Godel's Incompleteness Theorems, Jessica Dickson

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Incompleteness or inconsistency? Kurt Godel shocked the mathematical community in 1931 when he proved any effectively generated, sufficiently complex, and sound axiomatic system could not be both consistent and complete. This thesis will explore two formal languages of logic and their associated mechanically recursive proof methods with the goal of proving Godel's Incompleteness Theorems. This, in combination with an assignment of a natural number to every string of an axiomatic system, will be used to show a consistent system contains a true statement of the form "This sentence is unprovable," and a complete system contains a proof of its own …

Estimating The Efficacy Of Mild Heating Processes Taking Into Account Microbial Non-Linearities: A Case Study On The Thermisation Of A Food Simulant, Vasilis Valdramidis, Brijesh Tiwari, Patrick J. Cullen, Alain Kondjoyan, Jan Van Impe Jan 2011

Estimating The Efficacy Of Mild Heating Processes Taking Into Account Microbial Non-Linearities: A Case Study On The Thermisation Of A Food Simulant, Vasilis Valdramidis, Brijesh Tiwari, Patrick J. Cullen, Alain Kondjoyan, Jan Van Impe

Articles

Traditional and novel approaches for the calculation of the heat treatment efficiency are compared in this work. The Mild Heat value (MH-value), an alternative approach to the commonly used sterilisation, pasteurisation and cook value (F, P, C–value), is calculated to estimate the efficiency of a mild heat process. MH-value is the time needed to achieve a predefined microbial reduction at a reference temperature and a known thermal resistant constant, z, for log-linear or specific types of non log-linear microbial inactivation kinetics. An illustrative example is given in which microbial inactivation data of Listeria innocua CLIP 20-595 are used for estimating …

A sample of twelve men and eight women ages 18 to 62 participated in a usability study of the vest. The activity chosen for this study was a typing test during which users would control a media player remotely with the vest. The usability measures included ease of use, performance of the interface as determined by accuracy rates and time to task completion for both …

Defining Routing Policies In Peer-To-Peer Overlay Networks, Michael Pickering Jan 2011

Defining Routing Policies In Peer-To-Peer Overlay Networks, Michael Pickering

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This master’s thesis involves the definition and development of a policy-based routing scheme for peer-to-peer overlay networks. Many peer-to-peer networks are in existence today and each has various methods for discovering new peers, searching for content, and overcoming connectivity problems. The addition of efficient policy-based routing enhances the ability of peers within overlay networks to make appropriate routing decisions. Policy-based routing provides a means for peers to define the types of network traffic they are willing to route and the conditions under which they will route it. The motivations for these policies are many and are described in upcoming sections. …

The Weil Pairing On Elliptic Curves And Its Cryptographic Applications, Alex Edward Aftuck Jan 2011

The Weil Pairing On Elliptic Curves And Its Cryptographic Applications, Alex Edward Aftuck

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the Weil pairing on elliptic curves as a tool to implement a tripartite Diffie-Helman key exchange. Elliptic curves are introduced, as well as the addition operation that creates a group structure on its points. In leading to the definition of the Weil pairing, divisors of rational functions are studied, as well as the Weierstrass }-function, which shows the complex lattice as isomorphic to elliptic curves. Several important qualities of the Weil pairing are proved, and Miller's algorithm for quick calculation is shown. Next, the bipartite Diffie-Helman key exchange is discussed over finite fields and elliptic curves. Finally …

Exploring Identity Management At Community Colleges In Texas With Open Access To College Computer Networks, Michael John Callahan Jan 2011

Exploring Identity Management At Community Colleges In Texas With Open Access To College Computer Networks, Michael John Callahan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The study addressed the lack of identity management practices in Texas community colleges to identify guest users who access college computers. Guest user access is required by Texas law and is part of the state's mission to bridge the technology gap; however, improper identification methods leave the college vulnerable to liability issues. The purpose of this study was to eliminate or mitigate liabilities facing colleges by creating and using security policies to identify guest users. This study combined the theoretical concepts of Cameron's internal security management model with the external trust models of the Liberty Alliance and Microsoft's Passport software. …

Relation Liftings On Preorders And Posets, Marta Bílková, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jiří Velebil Jan 2011

Relation Liftings On Preorders And Posets, Marta Bílková, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jiří Velebil

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

The category Rel(Set) of sets and relations can be described as a category of spans and as the Kleisli category for the powerset monad. A set-functor can be lifted to a functor on Rel(Set) iff it preserves weak pullbacks. We show that these results extend to the enriched setting, if we replace sets by posets or preorders. Preservation of weak pullbacks becomes preservation of exact lax squares. As an application we present Moss’s coalgebraic over posets.

A Green Board As A Climate-Change Imperative: Appointing A Climate-Change Expert To The Audit Committee, Porcher L. Taylor Iii, Harris L. Kay Jan 2011

A Green Board As A Climate-Change Imperative: Appointing A Climate-Change Expert To The Audit Committee, Porcher L. Taylor Iii, Harris L. Kay

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications

This article makes the innovative and timely case for a climate change imperative: a green board. Urgency is evident, with the arrival of "a fast-emerging new burden on board members to oversee their company's posture on climate change and to begin monitoring an area that, until now, has drawn scant attention in the boardroom."21 One major impetus for the proposal advocated in this Article is that there is apparently a dearth of green boards in corporate America.22 In contrast, European and Canadian companies appear to be at the vanguard of utilizing green boards.23

Real-Time Behavior-Based Robot Control, Brian G. Woolley, Gilbert L. Peterson, Jared T. Kresge Jan 2011

Real-Time Behavior-Based Robot Control, Brian G. Woolley, Gilbert L. Peterson, Jared T. Kresge

Faculty Publications

Behavior-based systems form the basis of autonomous control for many robots, but there is a need to ensure these systems respond in a timely manner. Unexpected latency can adversely affect the quality of an autonomous system’s operations, which in turn can affect lives and property in the real-world. A robots ability to detect and handle external events is paramount to providing safe and dependable operation. This paper presents a concurrent version of a behavior-based system called the Real-Time Unified Behavior Framework, which establishes a responsive basis of behavior-based control that does not bind the system developer to any single behavior …
