Measuring Stability Of Threshold-Based Feature Selection Techniques, Huanjing Wang, Taghi Khoshgoftaar Nov 2011

Measuring Stability Of Threshold-Based Feature Selection Techniques, Huanjing Wang, Taghi Khoshgoftaar

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Feature selection has been applied in many domains, such as text mining and software engineering. Ideally a feature selection technique should produce consistent out- puts regardless of minor variations in the input data. Re- searchers have recently begun to examine the stability (robustness) of feature selection techniques. The stability of a feature selection method is defined as the degree of agreement between its outputs to randomly-selected subsets of the same input data. This study evaluated the stability of 11 threshold-based feature ranking techniques (rankers) when applied to 16 real-world software measurement datasets of different sizes. Experimental results demonstrate that AUC …

Chemical Activity In Yba2cu3o7 − Δ Across The Normal To Superconducting Phase Transition, Juana Vivó Acrivos Nov 2011

Chemical Activity In Yba2cu3o7 − Δ Across The Normal To Superconducting Phase Transition, Juana Vivó Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

The Gibbs free enthalpy, chemical activity across the transition temperature to superconductivity, Tc in YBa2Cu3O7 − δ is obtained from reciprocally enhanced X-Ray absorbance, XAS and diffraction, XRD data near the Ba L3,2 edges' energy Ea, and orientations in the X-ray beam for preferred Miller indexed [HKL] planes' scattering, that are enhanced near Tc. The standard enthalpy and entropy for the formation of mixed normal metal/superconducting domains above Tc, determined individually across the two Ba L3,2 edges, to better than a percent accuracy: ΔH≠≥ = − 220 meV, and ΔS≠≥ = − 2 meV/K when 121 ≥ T ≥ 92 …

Understanding The Molecular Information Contained In Principal Component Analysis Of Vibrational Spectra Of Biological Systems, Franck Bonnier, Hugh Byrne Nov 2011

Understanding The Molecular Information Contained In Principal Component Analysis Of Vibrational Spectra Of Biological Systems, Franck Bonnier, Hugh Byrne

Articles

K-means clustering followed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is employed to analyse Raman spectroscopic maps of single biological cells. K-means clustering successfully identifies regions of cellular cytoplasm, nucleus and nucleoli, but the mean spectra do not differentiate their biochemical composition. The loadings of the principal components identified by PCA shed further light on the spectral basis for differentiation but they are complex and, as the number of spectra per cluster is imbalanced, particularly in the case of the nucleoli, the loadings under-represent the basis for differentiation of some cellular regions. Analysis of pure bio-molecules, both structurally and spectrally distinct, in …

Measurement Of Magnetic Susceptibility In Pulsed Magnetic Fields Using A Proximity Detector Oscillator, S Ghannadzadeh, M Coak, I Franke, P A. Goddard, J Singleton, Jamie L. Manson

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We present a novel susceptometer with a particularly small spatial footprint and no moving parts. The susceptometer is suitable for use in systems with limited space where magnetic measurements may not have been previously possible, such as in pressure cells and rotators, as well as in extremely high pulsed fields. The susceptometer is based on the proximity detector oscillator, which has a broad dynamic resonant frequency range and has so far been used predominantly for transport measurements. We show that for insulating samples, the resonance frequency behavior as a function of field consists of a magnetoresistive and an inductive component, …

Mapping Shallow Coastal Ecosystems: A Case Study Of A Rhode Island Lagoon, Mark Stolt, Michael Bradley, Jim Turenne, Maggie Payne, Eric Scherer, Giancarlo Cicchetti, Emily Shumchenia, Marisa Guarinello, John W. King, Jon Boothroyd, Bryan Oakley, Carol Thornber, Pete August

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

In order to effectively study, manage, conserve, and sustain shallow-subtidal ecosystems, a spatial inventory of the basic resources and habitats is essential. Because of the complexities of shallow-subtidal substrates, benthic communities, geology, geomorphology, and water column attributes, few standard protocols are fully articulated and tested that describe the mapping and inventory processes and accompanying interpretations. In this paper, we describe a systematic approach to map Rhode Island’s shallow-subtidal coastal lagoon ecosystems, by using, integrating, and reconciling multiple data sets to identify the geology, soils, biological communities, and environments that, collectively, define each shallow-subtidal habitat. We constructed maps for these lagoons …

Cagan Type Rational Expectations Model On Time Scales With Their Applications To Economics, Funda Ekiz Nov 2011

Cagan Type Rational Expectations Model On Time Scales With Their Applications To Economics, Funda Ekiz

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Rational expectations provide people or economic agents making future decision with available information and past experiences. The first approach to the idea of rational expectations was given approximately fifty years ago by John F. Muth. Many models in economics have been studied using the rational expectations idea. The most familiar one among them is the rational expectations version of the Cagans hyperination model where the expectation for tomorrow is formed using all the information available today. This model was reinterpreted by Thomas J. Sargent and Neil Wallace in 1973. After that time, many solution techniques were suggested to solve the …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Various quaternary CuInxGa1−xS2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) chalcopyrite nanoparticles have been prepared from molecular single-source precursors via microwave decomposition. We were able to control the nanoparticle size, phase, stoichiometry, and solubility. Depending on the choice of surface modifiers used, we were able to tune the solubility of the resulting nanoparticles. This method has been used to generate up to 5 g of nanoparticles and up to 150 g from multiple batch reactions with excellent reproducibility. Data from UV-Vis, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction, TEM, DSC/TGA-MS, and ICP-OES analyses have shown high reproducibility in nanoparticle size, …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Recent counter-helicity spheromak merging experiments in the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) have produced a novel compact torus (CT) with unusual features. These include a persistent antisymmetric toroidal magnetic field profile and a slow, nonlinear emergence of the n = 1 tilt mode. Experimental measurements are inconclusive as to whether this unique CT is a fully merged field-reversed configuration (FRC) with strong toroidal field or a partially merged "doublet CT" configuration with both spheromak- and FRC-like characteristics. In this paper, the SSX merging process is studied in detail using three-dimensional resistive MHD simulations from the Hybrid Magnetohydrodynamics (HYM) code. These simulations …

Templated Synthesis Of Glycoluril Hexamer And Monofunctionalized Cucurbit[6]Uril Derivatives, Derick Lucas, Tsuyoshi Minami, Greg Iannuzzi, Liping Cao, James B. Wittenberg, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr., Lyle Isaacs

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We report that the p-xylylenediammonium ion (11) acts as a template in the cucurbit[n]uril forming reaction that biases the reaction toward the production of methylene bridged glycoluril hexamer (6C) and bis-nor-seco-CB [10]. Hexamer 6C is readily available on the gram scale by a one step synthetic procedure that avoids chromatography. Hexamer 6C undergoes macrocylization. with (substituted) phthalaldehydes 12,14,.15, and 18-in 9 M H2SO4 or concd HCl at room temperature to deliver monofunctionalized CB[6] derivatives 13,16,17, and 19 that are poised for further functionalization reactions: The kinetics of the macrocyclization reaction between hexamer and formaldehyde or phthalaldehyde depends on the presence …

Field Ecology Patterns Of High Latitude Coral Communities, Kristi A. Foster Nov 2011

Field Ecology Patterns Of High Latitude Coral Communities, Kristi A. Foster

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Some climate models predict that, within the next 30-50 years, sea surface temperatures (SSTs) will frequently exceed the current thermal tolerance of corals (Fitt et al. 2001; Hughes et al. 2003; Hoegh-Guldberg et al. 2007). A potential consequence is that mass coral bleaching may take place (i) during warm El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events which are predicted to occur in some regions more frequently than the current 3-7 year periodicity (Hoegh-Guldberg 1999; Sheppard 2003) or (ii) perhaps as often as annually or biannually if corals and their symbionts are unable to acclimate to the higher SSTs (Donner et al. 2005, …

This paper initiates a forensic analysis of the causes of levee failures by analyzing and extracting information from a sequence of elevation data. This is a crucial step in bettering the design and construction of levees and dams. (Fully diagnosing failures usually requires knowledge beyond the geometry of the levee, such as weather conditions and material properties). We use results from computer simulations of levee overtopping for training data. The simulations use smoothed particle hydrodynamics coupled with a well-known erodibility model. Using the sequential nature of our data, we extract important channel networks that form as the soil is scoured …

Libyan banks are well advanced in their installation of modern packaged software but could be used to greater effect to optimize business processes and improve efficiencies. Training and …

Consistency In Statistical Moments As A Test For Bubble Cloud Clustering, Thomas C. Weber, Anthony P. Lyons, David L. Bradley Nov 2011

Consistency In Statistical Moments As A Test For Bubble Cloud Clustering, Thomas C. Weber, Anthony P. Lyons, David L. Bradley

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Frequency dependent measurements of attenuation and/or sound speed through clouds of gas bubbles in liquids are often inverted to find the bubble size distribution and the void fraction of gas. The inversions are often done using an effective medium theory as a forward model under the assumption that the bubble positions are Poisson distributed (i.e., statistically independent). Under circumstances in which single scattering does not adequately describe the pressure field, the assumption of independence in position can yield large errors when clustering is present, leading to errors in the inverted bubble size distribution. It is difficult, however, to determine the …

Using cholesterol as starting material, a series of 6-substituted-3-aza-A-homo-3-oxycholestanes and 6-substituted-4-aza-A-homo-3-oxycholestanes were synthesized by the oxidation, reduction, oximation, Beckman rearrangement and condensation reaction. These synthesized compounds displayed a distinct cytotoxicity against MGC 7901, HeLa and SMMC 7404 cancer cells. Our results revealed that the structures of functional groups at position-6 on the steroidal ring are crucial for the IC50 value of antiproliferative activities of these compounds and the cytotoxic activity against MGC 7901 and SMMC 7404 cells was not significantly different between 4-N-lactams and 3-N-lactams when its 6-substituted group was a carbonyl or a hydroximino, but all 3-N-lactams showed a …

A 3-D Lighting And Shadow Analysis Of The Jfk Zapruder Film (Frame 317), Hany Farid Nov 2011

A 3-D Lighting And Shadow Analysis Of The Jfk Zapruder Film (Frame 317), Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

Claims of a broader conspiracy behind U.S. President John F. Kennedy's assassination have persisted for the past nearly five decades. The Zapruder film is considered to be the most complete recording of JFK's assassination. Many have claimed that this 8mm film was manipulated to conceal evidence of a second shooter, which would invalidate the claim that a lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, was responsible for JFK's assassination. Here we consider the viability of one specific claim of postproduction tampering in the Zapruder film.

Robustness, Power And Interpretability Of Pairwise Tests Of Discriminant Functions In Manova, Philip H. Ramsey, Patricia P. Ramsey, Priscila Hachimine, Nancy Andiloro

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Limiting follow-up hypotheses to be tested can reduce problems relating to the control of Type I and Type II errors in multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Such limitations can also improve the interpretability of results. The importance of sample size, shape of population distribution, within-group correlations and heterogeneity of variances are demonstrated. The protected greatest characteristic root (GCR) procedure is shown to work well for small, group size, N (≤ 10). The unprotected GCR is shown to work well for larger N.

A Comparison Of Factor Rotation Methods For Dichotomous Data, W. Holmes Finch Nov 2011

A Comparison Of Factor Rotation Methods For Dichotomous Data, W. Holmes Finch

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is frequently used in the social sciences and is a common component in many validity studies. A core aspect of EFA is the determination of which observed indicator variables are associated with which latent factors through the use of factor loadings. Loadings are initially extracted using an algorithm, such as maximum likelihood or weighted least squares, and then transformed - or rotated - to make them more interpretable. There are a number of rotational techniques available to the researcher making use of EFA. Prior work has discussed the advantages of a number of these criteria from …

Climate Change And The Conservation Of Archaeological Sites: A Review Of Impacts Theory, Caithleen Daly

Articles

This article identifies the current state of knowledge in the literature regarding the possible impacts of future climatic change on archaeological sites and ensembles. Drawing on the literature review a matrix of potential impacts is collated to provide a simplified overview. This theoretical ‘menu’ is then tested by applying it to a vulnerability assessment of the World Heritage site of Skellig Michael in Ireland. The case study results reveal some knowledge gaps, particularly in regard to the impacts of climate change on buried archaeological remains.

Statistical Thermodynamics Of Material Transport In Non-Isothermal Mixtures, Semen Semenov, Martin Schimpf Nov 2011

Statistical Thermodynamics Of Material Transport In Non-Isothermal Mixtures, Semen Semenov, Martin Schimpf

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter outlines a theoretical framework for the microscopic approach to material transport in liquid mixtures, and applies that framework to binary one-phase systems. The material transport in this approach includes no hydrodynamic processes related to the macroscopic transfer of momenta. In analyzing the current state of thermodynamic theory, we indicate critically important refinements necessary to use non-equilibrium thermodynamics and statistical mechanics in the application to material transport in nonisothermal mixtures.
