Rare Earth And High Field Strength Element Partitioning Between Iron-Rich Clinopyroxenes And Felsic Liquids, Paul H. Olin, John A. Wolff Nov 2010

Rare Earth And High Field Strength Element Partitioning Between Iron-Rich Clinopyroxenes And Felsic Liquids, Paul H. Olin, John A. Wolff

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Rare earth elements are commonly assumed to substitute only for Ca in clinopyroxene because of the similarity of ionic radii for REE3+ and Ca2+ in 8-fold coordination. The assumption is valid for Mg-rich clinopyroxenes for which observed mineral/melt partition coefficients are readily predicted by the lattice strain model for substitution onto a single site (e.g. Wood and Blundy, 1997). We show that natural Fe-rich pyroxenes in both silica-undersaturated and -oversaturated magmatic systems deviate from this behavior. Salites (Mg# 48 to 59) in phonolites from Tenerife, ferrohedenbergites (Mg# 14.2 to 16.2) from the rhyolitic Bandelier Tuff, and ferroaugites (Mg# …

The Positive Solutions Of The Matukuma Equation And The Problem Of Finite Radius And Finite Mass, Jurgen Batt, Yi Li Nov 2010

The Positive Solutions Of The Matukuma Equation And The Problem Of Finite Radius And Finite Mass, Jurgen Batt, Yi Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

This work is an extensive study of the 3 different types of positive solutions of the Matukuma equation 1r2(r2ϕ′)′=−rλ−2(1+r2)λ/2ϕp,p>1,λ>0 : the E-solutions (regular at r = 0), the M-solutions (singular at r = 0) and the F-solutions (whose existence begins away from r = 0). An essential tool is a transformation of the equation into a 2-dimensional asymptotically autonomous system, whose limit sets (by a theorem of H. R. Thieme) are the limit sets of Emden–Fowler systems, and serve as a characterization of the different solutions. The emphasis lies on the study of the M …

Ontology Alignment For Linked Open Data, Prateek Jain, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma, Peter Z. Yeh Nov 2010

Ontology Alignment For Linked Open Data, Prateek Jain, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma, Peter Z. Yeh

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Web of Data currently coming into existence through the Linked Open Data (LOD) effort is a major milestone in realizing the Semantic Web vision. However, the development of applications based on LOD faces difficulties due to the fact that the different LOD datasets are rather loosely connected pieces of information. In particular, links between LOD datasets are almost exclusively on the level of instances, and schema-level information is being ignored. In this paper, we therefore present a system for finding schema-level links between LOD datasets in the sense of ontology alignment. Our system, called BLOOMS, is based on the …

Defects At Oxygen Plasma Cleaned Zno Polar Surfaces, Y. F. Dong, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look, Daniel R. Doutt, G. Cantwell, J. Zhang, J. J. Song, L. J. Brillson Nov 2010

Defects At Oxygen Plasma Cleaned Zno Polar Surfaces, Y. F. Dong, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look, Daniel R. Doutt, G. Cantwell, J. Zhang, J. J. Song, L. J. Brillson

Physics Faculty Publications

Depth-resolved cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (DRCLS) reveals the evolution of surface and near surface defects at polar surfaces with remote oxygen plasma (ROP) treatment. Furthermore, this evolution exhibits significant differences that depend on surface polarity. ROP decreased the predominant 2.5 eV defect emission related to oxygen vacancies on the O face, while creating a new 2.1 eV defect emission on the Zn face that increases with ROP time. The surface-located 2.1 eV emission correlates with carrier profiles from capacitance-voltage measurements and a shift of the E3 trap to higher binding energy from deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS). This result suggests that ROP …

Isotherms And Kinetics Studies Of Lead Adsorption On Jatropha Seed Husk., Faheem Ahmed Qaid Mohammed

Student Works (2010-2019)

Presence of lead, a heavy metal in the environment has been a serious concern especially with rapid industrialization which has created new uses for lead. The acute toxicity of lead to aquatic Life and humans and the stringent effluent standard to be met by industries as specified by regulatory organizations has necessitated the development of innovative, effective and economical methods for treating lead-bearing wastewater. An adsorption process using an inexpensive adsorbent such as Jatropha seed husk is an attractive option for the removal of lead from wastewater. In this study batch isotherm and kinetic studies were carried out on a …

Construction And Improvement Of A Scheffler Reflector And Thermal Storage Device, Jason Rapp Nov 2010

Construction And Improvement Of A Scheffler Reflector And Thermal Storage Device, Jason Rapp

Physics

We constructed and successfully tested a 2 m2 parabolic dish solar concentrator (Scheffler Concentrator) to focus sunlight onto a stationary target. Present efforts are to decrease the construction complexity and cost of the concentrator. In order to store solar heat, we also constructed and are testing a thermal storage device made of sand (for thermal mass), and pumice (for insulation). Preliminary tests indicate thermal retention times of many hours. Present efforts are to increase accessible power, and structural integrity.

The Not-So-Quiet Revolution: Cautionary Comments On The Rejection Of Hypothesis Testing In Favor Of A “Causal” Modeling Alternative, Daniel H. Robinson, Joel R. Levin

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Rodgers (2010) recently applauded a revolution involving the increased use of statistical modeling techniques. It is argued that such use may have a downside, citing empirical evidence in educational psychology that modeling techniques are often applied in cross-sectional, correlational studies to produce unjustified causal conclusions and prescriptive statements.

Notes On Hypothesis Testing Under A Single-Stage Design In Phase Ii Trial, Kung-Jong Lui Nov 2010

Notes On Hypothesis Testing Under A Single-Stage Design In Phase Ii Trial, Kung-Jong Lui

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A primary objective of a phase II trial is to determine future development is warranted for a new treatment based on whether it has sufficient activity against a specified type of tumor. Limitations exist in the commonly-used hypothesis setting and the standard test procedure for a phase II trial. This study reformats the hypothesis setting to mirror the clinical decision process in practice. Under the proposed hypothesis setting, the critical points and the minimum required sample size for a desired power of finding a superior treatment at a given α -level are presented. An example is provided to illustrate how …

Adjusted Confidence Interval For The Population Median Of The Exponential Distribution, Moustafa Omar Ahmed Abu-Shawiesh Nov 2010

Adjusted Confidence Interval For The Population Median Of The Exponential Distribution, Moustafa Omar Ahmed Abu-Shawiesh

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The median confidence interval is useful for one parameter families, such as the exponential distribution, and it may not need to be adjusted if censored observations are present. In this article, two estimators for the median of the exponential distribution, MD, are considered and compared based on the sample median and the maximum likelihood method. The first estimator is the sample median, MD1, and the second estimator is the maximum likelihood estimator of the median, MDMLE. Both estimators are used to propose a modified confidence interval for the population median of the exponential distribution, MD …

A Comparison Between Unbiased Ridge And Least Squares Regression Methods Using Simulation Technique, Mowafaq M. Al-Kassab, Omar Q. Qwaider Nov 2010

A Comparison Between Unbiased Ridge And Least Squares Regression Methods Using Simulation Technique, Mowafaq M. Al-Kassab, Omar Q. Qwaider

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The parameters of the multiple linear regression are estimated using least squares ( B̂LS ) and unbiased ridge regression methods (B̂(KI,J)). Data was created for fourteen independent variables with four different values of correlation between these variables using Monte Carlo techniques. The above methods were compared using the mean squares error criterion. Results show that the unbiased ridge method is preferable to the least squares method.

A General Class Of Chain-Type Estimators In The Presence Of Non-Response Under Double Sampling Scheme, Sunil Kumar, Housila P. Singh, Sandeep Bhougal

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

General class chain ratio type estimators for estimating the population mean of a study variable are examined in the presence of non-response under a double sampling scheme using a factor-type estimator (FTE). Properties of the suggested estimators are studied and compared to those of existing estimators. An empirical study is carried out to demonstrate the performance of the suggested estimators; empirical results support the theoretical study.

Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications

An archaeogeophysical survey was carried out in May 2010 using Geonics EM-38 RT and a Malå Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system with a 500 MHz antenna over an 28x26 m grid immediately northeast of the Loring-Greenough house in Jamaica Plain, MA. Three major anomalies were identified. These anomalies have not been ground truthed, but they appear to be archaeological features. First, we suggest that there is builders trench just north of the house. Second, we suggest that there could be three east-west garden paths or other landscape features about 30 cm below the surface crossing the entire length of the …

We have measured the 3He(e,e' pp)n reaction at an incident energy of 4.7 GeV over a wide kinematic range. We identified spectator correlated pp and pn nucleon pairs by using kinematic cuts and measured their relative and total momentum distributions. This is the first measurement of the ratio of pp to pn pairs as a function of pair total momentum ptot. For pair relative momenta between 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c, the ratio is very small at low ptot and rises to approximately 0.5 at large ptot. This shows the dominance of tensor over …

Match–Mismatch Regulation For Bluegill And Yellow Perch Larvae And Their Prey In Sandhill Lakes, Jeffrey C. Jolley, David W. Willis, Richard S. Holland

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Food availability may regulate fish recruitment, both directly and indirectly. The availability of zooplankton, especially to newly hatched larvae, is thought to be crucial to their early growth and survival. We examined stomach contents of larval bluegill Lepomis macrochirus and yellow perch Perca flavescens in Pelican Lake and Cameron Lake, Nebraska, in 2004 and 2005. We also determined zooplankton availability and calculated prey selection using Chesson’s a. In addition, we investigated potential match–mismatch regulation of recruitment from 2004 to 2008. Bluegill positively selected copepod nauplii and Bosmina spp., and yellow perch often selected copepods. Abundant zooplankton populations were available for …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the improved processing power, graphic quality and high-speed wireless connection in recent generations of mobile phone, it looks more attractive than ever to introduce networked games on these devices. While device features and application resource requirements are rapidly growing, the battery technologies are not growing at the same pace. Networked Mobile games are a class of application, which consume higher levels of energy, as they are naturally more computationally intensive and use hardware components including audio, display and network to their fullest capacities. Therefore, the main concern is the limitation of the battery power of such portable devices to …

On Scientific Research: The Role Of Statistical Modeling And Hypothesis Testing, Lisa L. Harlow Nov 2010

On Scientific Research: The Role Of Statistical Modeling And Hypothesis Testing, Lisa L. Harlow

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Comments on Rodgers (2010a, 2010b) and Robinson and Levin (2010) are presented. Rodgers (2010a) initially reported on a growing trend towards more mathematical and statistical modeling; and a move away from null hypothesis significance testing (NHST). He defended and clarified those views in his sequel. Robinson and Levin argued against the perspective espoused by Rodgers and called for more research using experimentally manipulated interventions and less emphasis on correlational research and ill-founded prescriptive statements. In this response, the goal of science and major scientific approaches are discussed as well as their strengths and shortcomings. Consideration is given to how their …

The results were used to determine the consistency and efficiency of the models formulated.

Modelling Uncertainty Caused By Internal Waves On The Accuracy Of Mbes, Travis Hamilton, Jonathan Beaudoin Nov 2010

Modelling Uncertainty Caused By Internal Waves On The Accuracy Of Mbes, Travis Hamilton, Jonathan Beaudoin

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

A 3D ray tracing model has been developed to estimate the effects of internal waves upon the accuracy of multibeam echosounders (MBES). A case study examines the variability in these effects as a function of survey line direction and also considers the case of improving 2D ray tracing models with wave parameters derived from MBES water column imagery. Results indicate that, under certain circumstances, the effects of internal waves can prove to be a significant source of uncertainty that detracts from the ability to efficiently map the seafloor with wide swath angles.

Several cranial and postcranial elements are relatively well preserved and include the premaxilla, maxilla, dentary, teeth, quadratojugal, braincase, metacarpals, partial pubis and ischium, astragalus, partial tibia and fibula, metatarsals, pedal phalanges, and several partially preserved ribs. The specimen represents a new genus and species of …

Multi-Scale Perspectives On Paddlefish Populations: Implications For Species Conservation And Management, Brenda M. Pracheil Nov 2010

Multi-Scale Perspectives On Paddlefish Populations: Implications For Species Conservation And Management, Brenda M. Pracheil

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Order of fishes containing paddlefish and sturgeon has been named the most endangered group of organisms on the planet by the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Population trajectories of paddlefish, whose native range is entirely encompassed within the United States of America, are currently unknown, although the IUCN has considered them to have a high extinction risk in the wild. The declaration of the vulnerability of paddlefish to extinction, coupled with the global plight of other sturgeon species create urgency to establish population and species-level population trajectories. Moreover, this declaration creates a great need for swift management …

Spatial Similarities And Differences Of Attributes Of Three Subwatersheds Within The Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed And Their Relationship To Instream Total Suspended Solids, Dustin Fross Nov 2010

Spatial Similarities And Differences Of Attributes Of Three Subwatersheds Within The Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed And Their Relationship To Instream Total Suspended Solids, Dustin Fross

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The objective of this study was to spatially analyze the attributes of three subwatersheds, Hydrological Unit Code 12 (HUC 12), of the Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed in west-central Kansas and relate the variances of the attributes to the concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS) entering the Smoky Hill River during storm events. This was accomplished by comparing land cover, including cropland, grassland, and urban factors; agricultural practices, such as tillage methods, condition of terraces, and the presence of grass waterways; geomorphology, including soil types, topography, and visible erosion; and lastly, precipitation variance. The three HUC 12s that were studied …

Multiple Visions Of Teachers' Understandings Of Mathematics, Ann Kajander, Ralph Mason, Peter Taylor, Edward Doolittle, Tom Boland, Dan Jarvis, Wes Maciejewski

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In this dialog, the notion of mathematical understanding as might be needed by classroom teachers is critically examined by mathematics educators, mathematicians, and a classroom teacher, based on the outcomes of recent work with expert classroom teachers. Terminology, assumptions and examples are discussed and analysed from a number of points of view. Ultimately, the goal is to construct common ground from which appropriate mathematics courses for future teachers might be developed and taught. The need for common terminology and a unifying framework from which to work becomes apparent as multiple interpretations and visions are discussed.

Some Communication Complexity Results And Their Applications, Joshua E. Brody Nov 2010

Some Communication Complexity Results And Their Applications, Joshua E. Brody

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Communication Complexity represents one of the premier techniques for proving lower bounds in theoretical computer science. Lower bounds on communication problems can be leveraged to prove lower bounds in several different areas. In this work, we study three different communication complexity problems. The lower bounds for these problems have applications in circuit complexity, wireless sensor networks, and streaming algorithms. First, we study the multiparty pointer jumping problem. We present the first nontrivial upper bound for this problem. We also provide a suite of strong lower bounds under several restricted classes of protocols. Next, we initiate the study of several non-monotone …

The structures of [Cu(AA)6](ClO4)2, (I), and [Mn(AA)6](ClO4)2, (II) (AA is acrylamide, also known as prop-2-enamide; C3H5NO), display both intra- and intermolecular N-H...O hydrogen bonding. A three-dimensional network is propagated via the perchlorate counter-ions. There are two crystallographically independent molecules in the copper complex, with the most significant difference between them being the conformation of one symmetry-related pair of AA ligands which are in the unusual syn conformation. The copper complex exhibits syn/anti disorder of the =CH2 group in one pair of symmetry-related AA ligands. The CuII and MnII centres are both situated on centres of inversion. The copper complex cation …
