Neighbor Balanced Block Designs For Two Factors, Seema Jaggi, Cini Varghese, N. R. Abeynayake Nov 2010

Neighbor Balanced Block Designs For Two Factors, Seema Jaggi, Cini Varghese, N. R. Abeynayake

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The concept of Neighbor Balanced Block (NBB) designs is defined for the experimental situation where the treatments are combinations of levels of two factors and only one of the factors exhibits a neighbor effect. Methods of constructing complete NBB designs for two factors in a plot that is strongly neighbor balanced for one factor are obtained. These designs are variance balanced for estimating the direct effects of contrasts pertaining to combinations of levels of both the factors. An incomplete NBB design for two factors is also presented and is found to be partially variance balanced with three associate classes.

Ann Forecasting Models For Ise National-100 Index, Ozer Ozdemir, Atilla Aslanargun, Senay Asma

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Prediction of the outputs of real world systems with accuracy and high speed is crucial in financial analysis due to its effects on worldwide economics. Because the inputs of the financial systems are timevarying functions, the development of algorithms and methods for modeling such systems cannot be neglected. The most appropriate forecasting model for the ISE national-100 index was investigated. Box- Jenkins autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and artificial neural networks (ANN) are considered by using several evaluations. Results showed that the ANN model with linear architecture better fits the candidate data.

Reducing Selection Bias In Analyzing Longitudinal Health Data With High Mortality Rates, Xian Liu, Charles C. Engel, Han Kang, Kristie L. Gore

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Two longitudinal regression models, one parametric and one nonparametric, are developed to reduce selection bias when analyzing longitudinal health data with high mortality rates. The parametric mixed model is a two-step linear regression approach, whereas the nonparametric mixed-effects regression model uses a retransformation method to handle random errors across time.

Can Telomere Shortening Explain Sigmoidal Growth Curves?, Peter Olofsson Nov 2010

Can Telomere Shortening Explain Sigmoidal Growth Curves?, Peter Olofsson

Mathematics Faculty Research

A general branching process model is proposed to describe the shortening of telomeres in eukaryotic chromosomes. The model is flexible and incorporates many special cases to be found in the literature. In particular, we show how telomere shortening can give rise to sigmoidal growth curves, an idea first expressed by Portugal et al. [A computational model for telomere-dependent cell-replicative aging, BioSystems 91 (2008), pp. 262–267]. We also demonstrate how other types of growth curves arise if telomere shortening is mitigated by other cellular processes. We compare our results with published data sets from the biological literature.

What does it take to turn a learner into a discoverer? Or to turn a teacher into a co-adventurer? A handful of experiences—from teaching a middle-school math class to doing research with undergraduates—have changed the way that I would answer these questions. Some of the lessons I’ve learned have surprised me.

A Clustering Comparison Measure Using Density Profiles And Its Application To The Discovery Of Alternate Clusterings, Eric Bae, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong Nov 2010

A Clustering Comparison Measure Using Density Profiles And Its Application To The Discovery Of Alternate Clusterings, Eric Bae, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong

Kno.e.sis Publications

Data clustering is a fundamental and very popular method of data analysis. Its subjective nature, however, means that different clustering algorithms or different parameter settings can produce widely varying and sometimes conflicting results. This has led to the use of clustering comparison measures to quantify the degree of similarity between alternative clusterings. Existing measures, though, can be limited in their ability to assess similarity and sometimes generate unintuitive results. They also cannot be applied to compare clusterings which contain different data points, an activity which is important for scenarios such as data stream analysis. In this paper, we introduce a …

Influence Of Wall Vibrations On The Sound Of Brass Wind Instruments, Wilfried Kausel, Daniel W. Zietlow, Thomas R. Moore Nov 2010

Influence Of Wall Vibrations On The Sound Of Brass Wind Instruments, Wilfried Kausel, Daniel W. Zietlow, Thomas R. Moore

Student-Faculty Collaborative Research Publications

The results of an experimental and theoretical investigation of the influence of wall vibrations on the sound of brass wind instruments are presented. Measurements of the transmission function and input impedance of a trumpet, with the bell both heavily damped and freely vibrating, are shown to be consistent with a theory that assumes that the internal pressure causes an oscillation of the diameter of the pipe enclosing the air column. These effects are shown to be most significant in sections where there are flaring walls, which explains why damping these vibrations in cylindrical pipes normally produces no measurable effects.

Geographic Factors Of Residential Burglaries - A Case Study In Nashville, Tennessee, Jonathan A. Hall Nov 2010

Geographic Factors Of Residential Burglaries - A Case Study In Nashville, Tennessee, Jonathan A. Hall

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examines geographic patterns and geographic factors of residential burglary at the Nashville, TN area for a twenty year period at five year interval starting in 1988. The purpose of this study is to identify what geographic factors have impacted on residential burglary rates, and if there were changes in the geographic patterns of residential burglary over the study period. Several criminological theories guide this study, with the most prominent being Social Disorganization Theory and Routine Activities Theory. Both of these theories focus on the relationships of place and crime. A number of spatial analysis methods are hence adopted …

Correspondences Of Hypersurfaces In Hyperbolic Poincaré Manifolds And Conformally Invariant Pdes, Vincent Bonini, José M. Espinar, Jie Qing Nov 2010

Correspondences Of Hypersurfaces In Hyperbolic Poincaré Manifolds And Conformally Invariant Pdes, Vincent Bonini, José M. Espinar, Jie Qing

Mathematics

On a hyperbolic Poincaré manifold, we derive an explicit relationship between the eigenvalues of Weyl-Schouten tensor of a conformal representative of the conformal infinity and the principal curvatures of the level sets of the associated geodesic defining function. This considerably simplifies the arguments and generalizes the results of Gálvez, Mira and the second author. In particular, we obtain the equivalence between Christoffel-type problems for hypersurfaces in a hyperbolic Poincar´e manifold and scalar curvature problems on the conformal infinity.

Physics

It is now possible to estimate black hole (BH) masses across cosmic time, using broad emission lines in active galaxies. This technique informs our views of how galaxies and their central BHs coevolve. Unfortunately, there are many outstanding uncertainties associated with these "virial" mass estimates. One of these comes from using the accretion luminosity to infer a size for the broad-line region (BLR). Incorporating the new sample of low-luminosity active galaxies from our recent monitoring campaign at Lick Observatory, we recalibrate the radius-luminosity relation with tracers of the accretion luminosity other than the optical continuum. We find that the radius …

Tuning The Morphology Of Au/Cds Nanocomposites Through Temperature-Controlled Reduction Of Gold-Oleate Complexes, Elena Khon, Nishshanka N. Hewa-Kasakarage, Ian Nemitz, Krishna Acharya, Mikhail Zamkov Nov 2010

Tuning The Morphology Of Au/Cds Nanocomposites Through Temperature-Controlled Reduction Of Gold-Oleate Complexes, Elena Khon, Nishshanka N. Hewa-Kasakarage, Ian Nemitz, Krishna Acharya, Mikhail Zamkov

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

A general synthetic strategy for controlling the shape of gold domains grown onto CdS semiconductor nanocrystals is presented. The colloidal growth of Au nanoparticles is based on the temperature-controlled reduction of Au-oleate complexes on the surface of CdS and allows for precise tuning of nanoparticle diameters from 2.5 to 16 nm simply by adjusting the temperature of the growth solution, whereas the shape of Au/CdS nanocomposites can be controllably switched between matchsticks and barbells via the reaction rate. Depending on the exact morphology of Au and CdS domains, fabricated nanocomposites can undergo evaporation-induced self-assembly on a substrate either through end-to-end …

Engineering Flow States With Localized Forcing In A Thin, Marangoni-Driven Inclined Film, Rachel Levy, Stephen Rosenthal '09, Jeffrey Wong '11

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Numerical simulations of lubrication models provide clues for experimentalists about the development of wave structures in thin liquid films. We analyze numerical simulations of a lubrication model for an inclined thin liquid film modified by Marangoni forces due to a thermal gradient and additional localized forcing heating the substrate. Numerical results can be explained through connections to theory for hyperbolic conservation laws predicting wave fronts from Marangoni-driven thin films without forcing. We demonstrate how a variety of forcing profiles, such as Gaussian, rectangular, and triangular, affect the formation of downstream transient structures, including an N wave not commonly discussed in …

Enhancing Use Case Points Estimation Method Using Soft Computing Techniques, Ali Bou Nassif, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Nfa-Estimation

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Software estimation is a crucial task in software engineering. Software estimation encompasses cost, effort, schedule, and size. The importance of software estimation becomes critical in the early stages of the software life cycle when the details of software have not been revealed yet. Several commercial and non-commercial tools exist to estimate software in the early stages. Most software effort estimation methods require software size as one of the important metric inputs and consequently, software size estimation in the early stages becomes essential. One of the approaches that has been used for about two decades in the early size and effort …

Background: The rising temperature of the world’s oceans has become a major threat to coral reefs globally as the severity and frequency of mass coral bleaching and mortality events increase. In 2005, high ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean resulted in the most severe bleaching event ever recorded in the basin.

Methodology/Principal Findings: Satellite-based tools provided warnings for coral reef managers and scientists, guiding both the timing and location of researchers’ field observations as anomalously warm conditions developed and spread across the greater Caribbean region from June to October 2005. Field surveys of bleaching and mortality exceeded prior …

We investigated the electronic properties of N(5)-ethyl flavinium perchlorate (Et-Fl(+)) and compared them to those of its parent compound, 3-methyllumiflavin (Fl). Absorption and fluorescence spectra of Fl and Et-Fl(+) exhibit similar spectral features, but the absorption energy of Et-Fl(+) is substantially lower than that of Fl. We calculated the absorption signatures of Fl and Et-Fl(+) using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods and found that the main absorption bands of Fl and Et-Fl(+) are (pi,pi*) transitions for the S(1) and S(3) excited states. Furthermore, calculations predict that the S(2) state has (n,pi*) character. Using cyclic voltammetry and a simplistic consideration …

Emission of bromine from sea-salt aerosol, frost flowers, ice leads, and snow results in the nearly complete removal of surface ozone during Arctic spring. Regions of enhanced total column BrO observed by satellites have traditionally been associated with these emissions. However, airborne measurements of BrO and O3 within the convective boundary layer (CBL) during the ARCTAS and ARCPAC field campaigns at times bear little relation to enhanced column BrO. We show that the locations of numerous satellite BrO “hotspots” during Arctic spring are consistent with observations of total column ozone and tropopause height, suggesting a stratospheric origin to these …

Development And Evaluation Of Methods For Surveying Fish Populations In Nearshore Waters, Philip Smith, Ian Burrett, David Bailey, Francis Neat, David Donnan, Katherine Dunlop, James Thorburn, Rosanna Milligan, Steve Bastiman, Jane Dodd

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

  1. Nearshore areas provide critical habitat for a range of fish species targeted by commercial and recreational fisheries, both of which make an important contribution to local economies in rural areas. However, established trawl survey methods are not suited to many nearshore areas, owing to shallow depths, obstructions on the sea bed or vulnerable habitats, so there is a lack of information on fish abundance in these areas.
  2. The aim of the present project was to develop and test survey methods applicable to Scottish inshore waters, focussing on baited underwater cameras, fish traps, systematic rod-and-line surveys and observations of fish bycatch …

This paper describes a 3D environmental data compression technique for oceanographic datasets. With proper point selection, our method approximates uncompressed marine data using an over-determined system of linear equations based on, but essentially different from, the Laplacian partial differential equation. Then this approximation is refined via an error metric. These two steps work alternatively until a predefined satisfying approximation is found. Using several different datasets and metrics, we demonstrate that our method has an excellent compression ratio. To further evaluate our method, we compare it with 3D-SPIHT. 3D-ODETLAP averages 20% better compression than 3D-SPIHT on our eight test datasets, from …

Perturbations to the OH and OI [O(1S) 557.7 nm] airglow layers by ducted gravity waves near the Brunt-Väisälä period are investigated using a 2-D numerical model. Airglow signatures of these waves are strongly determined by perturbations of O, O3, and H, which exhibit peak densities near and above mesopause. Strong periodic vertical wind components of short-period gravity waves induce opposite relative density perturbations above and below the layer density peaks. Airglow signatures for ducted waves depend on the specific vertical shapes and altitudes of the wave packets relative to ambient species density profiles; waves perturbing …

We present the results of a three-continent multisite photometric campaign carried out on the Algol-type eclipsing binary system Y Cam, in which the primary component is a multiperiodic δ Sct-type pulsator. The observations consist of 86 nights and more than 450 h of useful data collected mainly during the Northern winter 2002–2003. This means that this is the most extensive time series for such kind of systems obtained so far. These observations were collected mostly in the Johnson V filter, but they also include, for the first time, nearly complete binary light curves in simultaneous Strömgren uvby filters together with …

Levee overtopping can lead to failure and cause catastrophic damage, as was the case during Hurricane Katrina. We present a computer simulation of erosion to study the development of the rills and gullies that form along an earthen embankment during overtopping. We have coupled 3D Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics with an erodibility model to produce our simulation. Through comparison between simulations and between simulation and analogous laboratory experiments, we provide quantitative and qualitative results, evaluating the accuracy of our simulation.

We study the orbits of two interacting particles described by a fully relativistic classical mechanical Hamiltonian. We use two sets of initial conditions. In the first set (dynamics 1) the system's center of mass is at rest. In the second set (dynamics 2) the center of mass evolves with velocity V. If dynamics 1 is observed from a reference frame moving with velocity-V, the principle of relativity requires that all observables must be identical to those of dynamics 2 seen from the laboratory frame. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that kinematic Lorentz space-time transformations fail to transform particle observables between the …

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles As Tools For Deep-Submergence Archaeology, Christopher N. Roman, Ian Roderick Mather

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Marine archaeology beyond the capabilities of scuba divers is a technologically enabled field. The tool suite includes ship-based systems such as towed side-scan sonars and remotely operated vehicles, and more recently free-swimming autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Each of these platforms has various imaging and mapping capabilities appropriate for specific scales and tasks. Broadly speaking, AUVs are becoming effective tools for locating, identifying, and surveying archaeological sites. This paper discusses the role of AUVs in this suite of tools, outlines some specific design criteria necessary to maximize their utility in the field, and presents directions for future developments. Results are presented …

Long-Term Evolution (LTE) is a new technology recently specified by 3GPP-Third Generation Partnership Project on the way towards fourth-generation mobile. This thesis presents the main technical features of this technology as well as its performances in terms of peak bit rate and average cell throughput, among others. LTE entails a big technological improvement as compared with the previous 3G standards. 1 However, this thesis also demonstrates that LTE performances do not fulfill the technical requirements established by ITU-R to classify one radio access technology as a member of the IMT-Advanced family of standards. Thus, this thesis describes the procedure followed …
