Assessing Understanding Of Multiplication Through Words, Pictures, And Numbers, Stephanie Z. Smith Jan 2007

Assessing Understanding Of Multiplication Through Words, Pictures, And Numbers, Stephanie Z. Smith

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

The objective of this session is to engage mathematics teacher educators in a discussion of how to assess an understanding of the concept of multiplication as an operation and its relationships to other operations. The session will begin with a presentation of a previously published study assessing children’s understanding of multiplication as grouping and the relationship between multiplication and addition. The assessment asked a series of problems involving words, pictures, and numbers. The results of the study indicate that the types of problems asked were successful in providing evidence of children’s understanding of multiplication. The study also found that a …

Change And Relationships In Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Mathematics Pedagogical Beliefs, Teaching Efficacy Beliefs, And Content Knowledge, Susan L. Swars, Lynn C. Hart , Ed., Stephanie Z. Smith, Marvin E. Smith

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

This study investigated the mathematics beliefs and content knowledge of 103 elementary preservice teachers in a developmental teacher preparation program that included a two course mathematics methods sequence. Preservice teachers’ pedagogical beliefs became more cognitively-oriented during the teacher preparation program with these changes occurring during the two methods courses. Pedagogical beliefs remained stable during student teaching. The preservice teachers also significantly increased their personal efficacy for teaching mathematics throughout the program with these shifts occurring across both methods courses and into student teaching. Pedagogical beliefs and teaching efficacy beliefs were not related at the beginning of the program, but, in …

Interactions Of The Triaquatricarbonylrhenium(I) Cation With Nucleotides And Other N-Donor Ligands, Kristie Marie Adams Jan 2007

Interactions Of The Triaquatricarbonylrhenium(I) Cation With Nucleotides And Other N-Donor Ligands, Kristie Marie Adams

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Transition metal centers possessing an octahedral geometry are useful for understanding the natural role of metal ions in biology. Complexes based on such metals might improve upon the widely used square planar Pt(II) anticancer drug cisplatin, cis-[Pt(NH3)2Cl2]. The octahedral triaquatricarbonylrhenium(I) cation, fac-[Re(CO)3(H2O)3]+, has been shown to possess anticancer activity. Furthermore, Re(I) complexes containing unstable rhenium isotopes have found utility as radiodiagnostic and radiotherapeutic agents. Thus, this work focuses on elucidating the fundamental coordination chemistry of fac-[Re(CO)3(H2O)3]+ …

Using Power Spectra To Look For Anisotropies In Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Distributions, Megan Alicia Mcewen Jan 2007

Using Power Spectra To Look For Anisotropies In Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Distributions, Megan Alicia Mcewen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The origins and compositions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) remains a mystery to this day. The Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) is being constructed now in the hopes that it will help solve this mystery by detecting more UHECR than any previous experiment. In this dissertation, I will discuss this experiment, and analyze the data collected so far by comparing it with simulated data from possible source distributions. In these simulations, I will track antiprotons, along with other possible cosmic ray primaries, through various models of galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields. Once they reach a certain distance, I will record …

Catching The Drift : Using Feature-Free Case-Based Reasoning For Spam Filtering., Sarah Jane Delany, Derek Bridge Jan 2007

Catching The Drift : Using Feature-Free Case-Based Reasoning For Spam Filtering., Sarah Jane Delany, Derek Bridge

Conference papers

n this paper, we compare case-based spam filters, focusing on their resilience to concept drift. In particular, we evaluate how to track concept drift using a case-based spam filter that uses a feature-free distance measure based on text compression. In our experiments, we compare two ways to normalise such a distance measure, finding that the one proposed in [1] performs better. We show that a policy as simple as retaining misclassified examples has a hugely beneficial effect on handling concept drift in spam but, on its own, it results in the case base growing by over 30%. We then compare …

Using Computer Vision To Create A 3d Representation Of A Snooker Table For Televised Competition Broadcasting, Hao Guo, Brian Mac Namee Jan 2007

Using Computer Vision To Create A 3d Representation Of A Snooker Table For Televised Competition Broadcasting, Hao Guo, Brian Mac Namee

Conference papers

The Snooker Extraction and 3D Builder (SE3DB) is designed to be used as a viewer aid in televised snooker broadcasting. Using a single camera positioned over a snooker table, the system creates a virtual 3D model of the table which can be used to allow audiences view the table from any angle. This would be particularly useful in allowing viewers to determine if particular shots are possible or not. This paper will describe the design, development and evaluation of this system. Particular focus in the paper will be given to the techniques used to recognise and locate the balls on …

Fabrication Of Dna Microarrays On Poly (Methylmethacrylate) Substrates For Biomolecular Reporting, Catherine N. Situma Jan 2007

Fabrication Of Dna Microarrays On Poly (Methylmethacrylate) Substrates For Biomolecular Reporting, Catherine N. Situma

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

DNA microarrays require the use of substrates with well-established surface modification / probe attachment chemistries. Glass/quartz have been widely adopted as typical support materials since their surface modification chemistries which involve the use of siloxane –based chemistries have been widely studied however; these chemistry is susceptible to hydrolytic cleavage especially at high or low pH values. Recently, polymers have been sought as alternative microarray support materials but their surface modification strategies are not well characterized compared to glass. This report will entail surface photo-modification of PMMA polymer substrates by UV irradiation which produces functional scaffolds of carboxylic groups that allow …

A Comparison Of Individual-Based And Matrix Projection Models To Applied To Fish Population And Community Dynamics, Shaye Ellen Sable Jan 2007

A Comparison Of Individual-Based And Matrix Projection Models To Applied To Fish Population And Community Dynamics, Shaye Ellen Sable

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Matrix projection models and individual-based models (IBM) are commonly used for the analysis and management of fish populations. Matrix models break down the population into age or stage classes, while IBMs track individuals. I perform a series of quantitative comparisons between the predictions of the two modeling approaches using the IBM as the standard of comparison to demonstrate when individual variation, species interactions, and spatial heterogeneity adversely affect matrix model performance. I first evaluate the matrix approach for predicting yellow perch population responses when perch are involved in size-specific predator-prey interactions with walleye. I created density-dependent and stochastic age-structured and …

Sign Ambiguities Of Gaussian Sums, Heon Kim Jan 2007

Sign Ambiguities Of Gaussian Sums, Heon Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In 1934, two kinds of multiplicative relations, extit{norm and Davenport-Hasse} relations, between Gaussian sums, were known. In 1964, H. Hasse conjectured that the norm and Davenport-Hasse relations are the only multiplicative relations connecting the Gaussian sums over $mathbb F_p$. However, in 1966, K. Yamamoto provided a simple counterexample disproving the conjecture when Gaussian sums are considered as numbers. This counterexample was a new type of multiplicative relation, called a {it sign ambiguity} (see Definition ef{defi:of_sign_ambi}), involving a $pm$ sign not connected to elementary properties of Gauss sums. In Chapter $5$, we provide an explicit product formula giving an infinite class …

Photon Angular Distribution And Nuclear-State Alignment In Nuclear Excitation By Electron Capture, Adriana Palffy, Zoltan Harman, Andrey S. Surzhykov, Ulrich D. Jentschura Jan 2007

Photon Angular Distribution And Nuclear-State Alignment In Nuclear Excitation By Electron Capture, Adriana Palffy, Zoltan Harman, Andrey S. Surzhykov, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The alignment of nuclear states resonantly formed in nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC) is studied by means of a density matrix technique. The vibrational excitations of the nucleus are described by a collective model and the electrons are treated in a relativistic framework. Formulas for the angular distribution of photons emitted in the nuclear relaxation are derived. We present numerical results for alignment parameters and photon angular distributions for a number of heavy elements in the case of E2 nuclear transitions. Our results are intended to help future experimental attempts to discern NEEC from radiative recombination, which is the …

Evaluation Of Laser-Assisted Bremsstrahlung With Dirac-Volkov Propagators, Erik Lotstedt, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Christoph H. Keitel Jan 2007

Evaluation Of Laser-Assisted Bremsstrahlung With Dirac-Volkov Propagators, Erik Lotstedt, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Christoph H. Keitel

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study spontaneous bremsstrahlung emission in a highly intense laser field. In this regime the interaction with the laser field has to be treated nonperturbatively by using the relativistic formalism including Dirac-Volkov propagators, while the interaction with the Coulomb field and the bremsstrahlung radiation can be treated in first-order perturbation theory. For the intermediate electron state a fully laser-dressed propagator is used, including radiative corrections to avoid singularities on the mass shell. We find that the use of the Dirac-Volkov propagator is crucial to obtain correct numerical results. The cross section of the process is evaluated for laser intensities of …

Evidence Of Dynamical Spin Shielding In Ce From Spin-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy, James G. Tobin, S. W. Yu, Takashi Komesu, B. W. Chung, Simon A. Morton, George Daniel Waddill Jan 2007

Evidence Of Dynamical Spin Shielding In Ce From Spin-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy, James G. Tobin, S. W. Yu, Takashi Komesu, B. W. Chung, Simon A. Morton, George Daniel Waddill

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using Fano effect measurements upon polycrystalline Ce, we have observed a phase reversal between the spectral structure at the Fermi edge and the other 4f derived feature near a binding energy of 2 eV. The Fano effect is the observation of spin polarized photoelectron emission from nonmagnetic materials, under chirally selective excitation, such as circularly polarized photons. The observation of phase reversal between the two peaks is a direct experimental proof of Kondo shielding in Ce, confirming the predictions of Gunnarsson and Shoenhammer, albeit with a small modification.

Local Defect In A Magnet With Long-Range Interactions, Jose A. Hoyos, Thomas Vojta Jan 2007

Local Defect In A Magnet With Long-Range Interactions, Jose A. Hoyos, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate a single defect coupling to the square of the order parameter in a nearly critical magnet with long-range spatial interactions of the form r−(d+sigma), focusing on magnetic droplets nucleated at the defect while the bulk system is in the paramagnetic phase. To determine the static droplet profile, we solve a Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson action in the saddle-point approximation. Because of the long-range interaction, the droplet develops a power-law tail which is energetically unfavorable. However, as long as sigma>0, the tail contribution to the droplet free energy is subleading in the limit of large droplets; and the free energy becomes …

Mesoporous Matrices For Quantum Computation With Improved Response Through Redundance, T. E. Hodgson, Massimo F. Bertino, Nicholas Leventis, Irena D'Amico Jan 2007

Mesoporous Matrices For Quantum Computation With Improved Response Through Redundance, T. E. Hodgson, Massimo F. Bertino, Nicholas Leventis, Irena D'Amico

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a solid state implementation of quantum computation, which improves previously proposed optically driven schemes. Our proposal is based on vertical arrays of quantum dots embedded in a mesoporous material which can be fabricated with present technology. The redundant encoding typical of the chosen hardware protects the computation against gate errors and the effects of measurement induced noise. The system parameters required for quantum computation applications are calculated for II-VI and III-V materials and found to be within the experimental range. The proposed hardware may help minimize errors due to polydispersity of dot sizes, which is at present one …

Normal Transport At Positive Temperatures In Classical Hamiltonian Open Systems, P. Lafitte, Paul Ernest Parris, Stephan De Bièvre Jan 2007

Normal Transport At Positive Temperatures In Classical Hamiltonian Open Systems, P. Lafitte, Paul Ernest Parris, Stephan De Bièvre

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the transport properties of classical Hamiltonian models describing the motion of an unconfined particle coupled to vibrational degrees of freedom in thermal equilibrium at zero or positive temperature. We identify and discuss conditions under which, in such systems, the particle has a well-defined diffusion constant and mobility. We will in particular point out some marked differences with the situation where the particle is confined and described with a Caldeira-Leggett model. We will more specifically report on results obtained in a classical version of the Holstein molecular crystal model, speculate on their relevance in the corresponding quantum system and …

Angular Distributions From Photoionization Of H₂⁺, J. Colgan, O. Al-Hagan, Jerry Peacher, Don H. Madison, M. S. Pindzola, M. Foster Jan 2007

Angular Distributions From Photoionization Of H₂⁺, J. Colgan, O. Al-Hagan, Jerry Peacher, Don H. Madison, M. S. Pindzola, M. Foster

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study is made of the differential cross sections arising from the photoionization of H2+. Previous studies indicated surprising differences in the shapes of the angular distributions calculated from exterior complex scaling and 2C methods. To further explore these differences, we have calculated the angular distributions from the photoionization of H2+ using an independent two-body Coulomb function (2C) method and a distorted wave approach. As a final test, we also present calculations using a time-dependent technique. Our results confirm the discrepancies found previously and we present possible reasons for these differences.

Differential Double Capture Cross Sections In P+He Collisions, Michael Schulz, T. Vajnai, J. A. Brand Jan 2007

Differential Double Capture Cross Sections In P+He Collisions, Michael Schulz, T. Vajnai, J. A. Brand

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have measured differential double capture cross sections for 15 to 150 keV p+He collisions. We also analyzed differential double to single capture ratios, where we find pronounced peak structures. An explanation of these structures probably requires a quantum-mechanical description of elastic scattering between the projectile and the target nucleus. Strong final-state correlations have a large effect on the magnitude of the double capture cross sections

Effects Of The Final-State Electron-Ion Interactions On The Fully Differential Cross Sections For Heavy-Particle-Impact Ionization Of Helium, Don H. Madison, Jerry Peacher, M. Foster, K. Bartschat, H. P. Saha, Allison L. Harris Jan 2007

Effects Of The Final-State Electron-Ion Interactions On The Fully Differential Cross Sections For Heavy-Particle-Impact Ionization Of Helium, Don H. Madison, Jerry Peacher, M. Foster, K. Bartschat, H. P. Saha, Allison L. Harris

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three-dimensional fully differential cross sections for heavy-particle-impact ionization of helium are examined. Previously, the three-body distorted-wave (3DW) model has achieved good agreement with experiment in the scattering plane for small momentum transfers, but poor agreement for large momentum transfers. Poor agreement was also observed outside the scattering plane for all momentum transfers. In particular, the 3DW calculations predicted cross sections that were too small both perpendicular to the scattering plane and for large momentum transfers. The important unanswered question concerns the physical effects that cause the significant disagreement between experiment and theory. In previous works, the role of the projectile-ion …

Electronic Band Structure And Carrier Effective Mass In Calcium Aluminates, Julia E. Medvedeva, E. N. Teasley, M. D. Hoffman Jan 2007

Electronic Band Structure And Carrier Effective Mass In Calcium Aluminates, Julia E. Medvedeva, E. N. Teasley, M. D. Hoffman

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

First-principles electronic band structure investigations of five compounds of the CaO-Al2O3 family, 3CaO·Al2O3, 12CaO·7Al2O3, CaO·Al2O3, CaO·2Al2O3, and CaO·6Al2O3, as well as CaO and alpha-, theta-, and kappa-Al2O3 are performed. We find that the conduction band in the complex oxides is formed from the oxygen antibonding p states and, although the band gap in Al2O3 is almost twice larger than in CaO, the s states of both cations. Such a hybrid nature of the conduction band leads to isotropic electron effective masses which are nearly the same for all compounds investigated. This insensitivity of the effective mass to variations in the …

Reconciliation Of Measured Fully Differential Single Ionization Data With The First Born Approximation Convoluted With Elastic Scattering, Michael Schulz, M. Dürr, B. Najjari, R. Moshammer, J. D. Ullrich Jan 2007

Reconciliation Of Measured Fully Differential Single Ionization Data With The First Born Approximation Convoluted With Elastic Scattering, Michael Schulz, M. Dürr, B. Najjari, R. Moshammer, J. D. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analysis of experimental fully differential data for single ionization in 100 MeV/amu C6++He collisions is reported. We present a convolution of the first Born approximation with elastic scattering by using an event generator technique. Furthermore, the calculation is convoluted with all known experimental resolutions. Our analysis shows that elastic scattering is a viable explanation for surprising structures observed in the fully differential cross sections outside the scattering plane. Furthermore, it may even explain discrepancies in the “recoil peak” frequently observed for both ion and electron impact.

Screened-Exchange Determination Of The Electronic Properties Of Monoclinic, Tetragonal And Cubic Zirconia, Julia E. Medvedeva, C. B. Geller, D. M. Rishel, Arthur J. Freeman Jan 2007

Screened-Exchange Determination Of The Electronic Properties Of Monoclinic, Tetragonal And Cubic Zirconia, Julia E. Medvedeva, C. B. Geller, D. M. Rishel, Arthur J. Freeman

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

First-principles electronic band structure investigations of monoclinic, tetragonal, and cubic ZrO2 reveal the highly anisotropic nature of the conduction and valence band topologies in the monoclinic phase with electron and hole effective masses differing by over an order of magnitude in perpendicular directions. The planes of relatively high implied electron and hole mobilities intersect along a single crystallographic direction, making this the only direction readily available for exciton motion. Conversely, in the tetragonal and cubic phases, charge carrier effective masses are more isotropic and exciton motion is less restricted. These findings may explain recent experimental observations suggesting that exciton production …

Spatial Distribution And Magnetism In Poly-Cr-Doped Gan From First Principles, X. Y. Cui, Julia E. Medvedeva, B. Delley, C. Stampfl, Arthur J. Freeman

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Large scale density-functional theory calculations have been performed to understand the spatial distribution and magnetic coupling of Cr-doped GaN, in which exhaustive structural and magnetic configurations have been investigated by doping of up to five Cr atoms in large supercells. Our results provide direct evidence that the distribution of the doped magnetic ions is neither homogeneous nor random as widely assumed previously. Rather, under both Ga-rich and N-rich growth conditions, the Cr atoms have a strong tendency to form substitutional, embedded clusters with short-range magnetic interactions maintaining the wurtzite structure. Significantly, while the ferromagnetic state is favored for pair doping, …

Averaging Of The Electron Effective Mass In Multicomponent Transparent Conducting Oxides, Julia E. Medvedeva Jan 2007

Averaging Of The Electron Effective Mass In Multicomponent Transparent Conducting Oxides, Julia E. Medvedeva

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We find that layered materials composed of various oxides of cations with s2 electronic configuration, XY2O4, X = in or Sc, Y = Ga, Zn, Al, Cd and/or Mg, exhibit isotropic electron effective mass which can be obtained via averaging over those of the corresponding single-cation oxide constituents. This effect is due to a hybrid nature of the conduction band formed from the s-states of all cations and the oxygen p-states. Moreover, the observed insensitivity of the electron effective mass to the oxygen coordination and to the distortions in the cation-oxygen chains suggests that a …

Quantum-Theory Based Event Generator For The Analysis Of Kinematically Complete Experiments, M. Dürr, B. Najjari, Michael Schulz, A. Dorn, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The 'reaction microscope', an electron-ion coincidence momentum imaging spectrometer, represents a unique technique to measure multiply differential ionization cross sections for ionic projectiles. Observed discrepancies with theory for singly ionizing collision of 3.6 MeV/u Au53+ and 100 MeV/u C6+ ions severely challenge theoretical models. We present a method based on event-generators, which allows to consistently incorporate instrumental effects into theory. The result of the convolution procedure suggests, that the observed discrepancies are not a result of the experimental resolution, but are of true physical nature.

Photosensitization Of Photoconductive And Photorefractive Composites Through The Inclusion Of Semiconductor Nanocrystals, Tyler Martin Fears Jan 2007

Photosensitization Of Photoconductive And Photorefractive Composites Through The Inclusion Of Semiconductor Nanocrystals, Tyler Martin Fears

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

A novel synthesis of NiS nanocrystals included in photorefractive polymeric composites is described. The nanocrystals were characterized using visible-absorption spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. We further demonstrate the ability to enhance aspects of the composites' photorefractive performance by performing ligand exchange on the nanocrystals prior to their incorporation into the polymer composite. It was originally believed that this modification of the nanocrystals' surface characteristics would result in an enhanced charge-transfer process between the nanocrystal and the charge transporting matrix. However, when the photo conductivities were determined and used in calculating the quantum efficiencies associated with the …

Unleaded Drinking Water: Equilibrium Potential Measurements For Monochloramine Disinfectant, Brandi Clark Jan 2007

Unleaded Drinking Water: Equilibrium Potential Measurements For Monochloramine Disinfectant, Brandi Clark

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The strength of monochloramine, NH2CI, as an oxidizing agent can be linked to its effect on Pb levels in drinking water. In this study, the equilibrium potential was measured as a function of pH from pH 8 to 12 and compared to a theoretical plot of formal potentials derived from the Nemst equation. The measured equilibrium potential was consistently about 300 mV more negative than the calculated potential - NH2CI is a weaker oxidizing agent than predicted. When the measured potentials are plotted on a Pourbaix diagram, it is found that NH2CI can oxidize …

Polymer Gels: Mimickin G Biological Environments, Joshua Carey Jan 2007

Polymer Gels: Mimickin G Biological Environments, Joshua Carey

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

A comparison of the hydrolysis of pyruvic acid in polymer gels and in aqueous environment will be studied using NMR techniques. Relaxation time and diffusion rates will be determined and compared to show the mimicking capability of the polymer gels to that of biological environments. This will allow for a means in which chemical reactions can be performed in a medium that more closely resembles the rate that the reaction would occur in biological systems.
