Habitat Use, Movements, And Survival Of Radio-Marked Female Mallards In The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Bruce Edward Davis Jan 2007

Habitat Use, Movements, And Survival Of Radio-Marked Female Mallards In The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Bruce Edward Davis

LSU Master's Theses

Mallard (Anas platyrhynhcos) populations in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) historically averaged 1.6 million and represented the largest concentrations of wintering mallards in North America. Effective management of this wintering population requires current information on use of habitats, movements, and survival of female mallards. I used radio-telemetry techniques to assess these parameters during winters 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. Radio-marked female mallards used forested wetland habitats extensively during diurnal and nocturnal sampling periods. Proportional use of habitats varied inconsistently among time periods defined by hunting seasons and winters. Proportional use of forested wetlands ranged from 0.464 to 0.816 and from 0.280 …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Dunaliella Tertiolecta As A Candidate Algal Species For Tertiary Wastewater Treatment Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus-Laden Effluents Impacting Marine Environments, Ashley Juanika Belle Jan 2007

Laboratory Evaluation Of Dunaliella Tertiolecta As A Candidate Algal Species For Tertiary Wastewater Treatment Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus-Laden Effluents Impacting Marine Environments, Ashley Juanika Belle

LSU Master's Theses

Dunaliella tertiolecta was evaluated to determine the effectiveness of utilizing the algal species to reduce the nutrient load of saline wastewater during tertiary treatment. Nutrient uptake studies performed using f/2-Si medium illustrated that Dunaliella tertiolecta favored phosphate uptake over nitrate-nitrogen. Over a 7-day observational period, total phosphorus concentration was reduced by over 97% and the kinetic rate of uptake observed was approximately 0.5 - 1 mg/L/day. Daily nitrate-nitrogen concentrations were highly variable and a model could not be determined to predict uptake behavior. In heavily concentrated nutrient loads, the algae still favored phosphate uptake. However as the nutrient load increased …

The Use Of Stable Isotopes To Determine The Ratio Of Resident To Migrant King Rails In Southern Louisiana And Texas, Marie Perkins Jan 2007

The Use Of Stable Isotopes To Determine The Ratio Of Resident To Migrant King Rails In Southern Louisiana And Texas, Marie Perkins

LSU Master's Theses

Over the past 30 years, the king rail (Rallus elegans) has purportedly declined precipitously throughout its range, with the most severe declines seen in the migratory populations. King rails, however, are considered a game species in Louisiana and Texas, thus, it is important to determine what proportion of king rails wintering there are migratory. This is complicated because there is no reliable method to distinguish between king and clapper rails and few studies have attempted to capture wintering rails. The objectives of this study were to: 1) Determine the best method for capturing wintering rails; 2) Determine if morphometric measurements …

Disturbance Effects On Nekton Communities Of Seagrasses And Bare Substrates In Biloxi Marsh, Louisiana, Jamie Lynn Maiaro Jan 2007

Disturbance Effects On Nekton Communities Of Seagrasses And Bare Substrates In Biloxi Marsh, Louisiana, Jamie Lynn Maiaro

LSU Master's Theses

With marshes deteriorating rapidly across the Louisiana coast, the role of seagrasses in sustaining fisheries has come into question. Seagrasses are known to shelter small fish from larger predators. Seagrasses also act as a foraging ground for commercially important species, including spotted seatrout. Thirty samples, fifteen from seagrass habitats and fifteen from bare substrate habitats, were collected inside Biloxi Marsh using a drop sampler in May 2005. After the passage of Hurricanes Cindy and Katrina on July 6, 2005 and August 29, 2005, respectively, the seagrasses in Biloxi Marsh were either uprooted, buried, or both. The May 2005 sites were …

Quantum Dynamics Of Loop Quantum Gravity, Muxin Han Jan 2007

Quantum Dynamics Of Loop Quantum Gravity, Muxin Han

LSU Master's Theses

In the last 20 years, loop quantum gravity, a background independent approach to unify general relativity and quantum mechanics, has been widely investigated. The aim of loop quantum gravity is to construct a mathematically rigorous, background independent, nonperturbative quantum theory for the Lorentzian gravitational field on a four-dimensional manifold. In this approach, the principles of quantum mechanics are combined with those of general relativity naturally. Such a combination provides us a picture of "quantum Riemannian geometry", which is discrete at a fundamental scale. In the investigation of quantum dynamics, the classical expressions of constraints are quantized as operators. The quantum …

Ecosystem Effects Of Expanding Populations Of Avicennia Germinans In A Southeastern Louisiana Spartina Alterniflora Saltmarsh, Carey Lynn Perry Jan 2007

Ecosystem Effects Of Expanding Populations Of Avicennia Germinans In A Southeastern Louisiana Spartina Alterniflora Saltmarsh, Carey Lynn Perry

LSU Master's Theses

Although the Earth may be in the early stages of the projected trends of global warming, several ecological responses to recent warming are already evident. The timing of seasonal activities of plants and animals has begun to shift, and the advancement of species poleward is occurring in several regions of the world. One unique distributional shift is the movement of Avicennia germinans (black mangrove) northward into temperate salt marshes dominated by the marsh grass, Spartina alterniflora. In Louisiana, black mangroves were historically restricted to the southernmost barrier islands and beaches; however, in recent years a noticeable expansion of Avicennia northward …

Evolution Of An Allochthonous Salt System, Southern Mars-Ursa Basin, Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Angela Bordelon Pell Jan 2007

Evolution Of An Allochthonous Salt System, Southern Mars-Ursa Basin, Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Angela Bordelon Pell

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines the evolution of an allochthonous salt system in the southern Mars-Ursa basin. A seismic stratigraphic framework and biostratigraphic markers provided constraints on basin development and sediment accumulation from late Miocene to middle Pliocene time. External geometries of tectonostratigraphic packages are identified in the study area and are combined with analyses of brittle deformation to track salt evacuation in the study area. External geometries identified in the study include: wedge, layer and trough. Fifty-nine faults were mapped in basin and suprasalt strata and five phases of brittle deformation were identified. Eight evolutionary stages were identified for the time …

Spatial Ecology Of Gray Foxes On A Longleaf Pine Forest And The Surrounding Landscape In Southwestern Georgia, Danielle Lolene Temple Jan 2007

Spatial Ecology Of Gray Foxes On A Longleaf Pine Forest And The Surrounding Landscape In Southwestern Georgia, Danielle Lolene Temple

LSU Master's Theses

In the southeastern United States, industrial agriculture dominates the landscape, and much of the native land cover is in decline. Longleaf pine forests were once a dominant ecosystem in this region, but have largely disappeared. However, little research has been conducted on how this loss affects wildlife, especially mammalian predators. With increasing restoration efforts for longleaf pine it is important to assess the impact on species that inhabit those landscapes. Gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) are native to the Southeast, but are adaptable to a wide range of habitats. Therefore, during 2002-2006 I studied a population of gray foxes on land …

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The K0 SK±π∓ final state in two-photon collisions is studied with the L3 detector at LEP at e+e- centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 664.6 pb-1. The η(1475) and f 1(1420) mesons are observed and their contribution is separated by measuring the formation rates as a function of the photon virtuality Q 2. The η(1475) is found to be dominant for Q2 0.01GeV2 and its two-photon width is measured to be 0.23±0.05 (stat.) ±0.05 (sys.) keV. At higher Q2, the f 1(1420) is formed and decays to K*(892)K. The γγ coupling and form factor …

Asymptotic Properties Of Estimators For The Linear Panel Regression Model With Individual Effects And Serially Correlated Errors: The Case Of Stationary And Non-Stationary Regressors And Residuals, Badi H. Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Long Liu Jan 2007

Asymptotic Properties Of Estimators For The Linear Panel Regression Model With Individual Effects And Serially Correlated Errors: The Case Of Stationary And Non-Stationary Regressors And Residuals, Badi H. Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Long Liu

Center for Policy Research

This paper studies the asymptotic properties of standard panel data estimators in a simple panel regression model with error component disturbances. Both the regressor and the remainder disturbance term are assumed to be autoregressive and possibly non-stationary. Asymptotic distributions are derived for the standard panel data estimators including ordinary least squares, fixed effects, first-difference, and generalized least squares (GLS) estimators when both T and n are large. We show that all the estimators have asymptotic normal distributions and have different convergence rates dependent on the non-stationarity of the regressors and the remainder disturbances. We show using Monte Carlo experiments that …

Modelling And Testing For Structural Changes In Panel Cointegration Models With Common And Idiosyncratic Stochastic Trend, Chihwa Kao, Lorenzo Trapani, Giovanni Urga Jan 2007

Modelling And Testing For Structural Changes In Panel Cointegration Models With Common And Idiosyncratic Stochastic Trend, Chihwa Kao, Lorenzo Trapani, Giovanni Urga

Center for Policy Research

In this paper, we propose an estimation and testing framework for parameter instability in cointegrated panel regressions with common and idiosyncratic trends. We develop tests for structural change for the slope parameters under the null hypothesis of no structural break against the alternative hypothesis of (at least) one common change point, which is possibly unknown. The limiting distributions of the proposed test statistics are derived. Monte Carlo simulations examine size and power of the proposed tests. We are grateful for discussions with Robert De Jong, Long-Fei Lee, Zongwu Cai, and Yupin Hu. We would also like to thank participants in …

This paper gives a brief survey of forecasting with panel data. Starting with a simple error component regression model and surveying best linear unbiased prediction under various assumptions of the disturbance term. This includes various ARMA models as well as spatial autoregressive models. The paper also surveys how these forecasts have been used in panel data applications, running horse races between heterogeneous and homogeneous panel data models using out of sample forecasts.

Environmental Factors Influencing The Siting Of Temporary Housing In Orleans Parish, Philip J. Chandler Jan 2007

Environmental Factors Influencing The Siting Of Temporary Housing In Orleans Parish, Philip J. Chandler

LSU Master's Theses

The disaster in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina showcased the city's many environmental problems. The industrial history of the city, subsidence of the city causing it to be below sea-level, and the fact that the city is protected by levees and pumps were critical elements of the disaster and played a large role in the emergency response. The disaster led to an enormous emergency response by many entities, but the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has the lead in these actions. In response to the large number of homes being flooded and unlivable in Orleans Parish, FEMA implemented its …

Chumming On The Chesapeake Bay And Complexity Theory: Why The Precautionary Principle, Not Cost-Benefit Analysis, Makes More Sense As A Regulatory Approach, Hope M. Babcock Jan 2007

Chumming On The Chesapeake Bay And Complexity Theory: Why The Precautionary Principle, Not Cost-Benefit Analysis, Makes More Sense As A Regulatory Approach, Hope M. Babcock

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Estuaries like the Chesapeake Bay ("Bay") and Puget Sound are in grave trouble. They each suffer from poor water quality, loss of habitat, and declining biodiversity, and efforts to restore their health are straining both public and private resources. While accomplishments are often recorded in the fight against these ills, it is clear these accomplishments "are not yet equal to the scale of the problems." The focus of this article is on the nation's largest estuary, the Bay. Despite the investment of billions of dollars to improve water quality, the Bay continues to suffer from severe environmental degradation that impairs …

Administering The Clean Water Act: Do Regulators Have "Bigger Fish To Fry" When It Comes To Addressing The Practice Of Chumming On The Chesapeake Bay?, Hope M. Babcock Jan 2007

Administering The Clean Water Act: Do Regulators Have "Bigger Fish To Fry" When It Comes To Addressing The Practice Of Chumming On The Chesapeake Bay?, Hope M. Babcock

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Chesapeake Bay is one of the country's most productive estuaries. However, for decades the health of the Bay has been declining due in large part to nutrification. Excessive nutrients encourage algal blooms, which lower dissolved oxygen and increase turbidity in the Bay's waters. More than 40% of the Bay's main stern is now dead largely as a result of this problem. The practice of chumming, the discarding of baitfish, usually menhaden, over the sides of fishing boats to attract game fish like striped bass, is contributing to the Bay's nutrification problem because the decomposing chum raises the waters biological …

Online Reinforcement Learning Neural Network Controller Design For Nanomanipulation, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2007

Online Reinforcement Learning Neural Network Controller Design For Nanomanipulation, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel reinforcement learning neural network (NN)-based controller, referred to adaptive critic controller, is proposed for affine nonlinear discrete-time systems with applications to nanomanipulation. In the online NN reinforcement learning method, one NN is designated as the critic NN, which approximates the long-term cost function by assuming that the states of the nonlinear systems is available for measurement. An action NN is employed to derive an optimal control signal to track a desired system trajectory while minimizing the cost function. Online updating weight tuning schemes for these two NNs are also derived. By using the Lyapunov approach, …

Observational Intelligence: An Overview Of Computational Actual Entities And Their Use As Agents Of Artificial Intelligence, Brandon Scot Saunders Jan 2007

Observational Intelligence: An Overview Of Computational Actual Entities And Their Use As Agents Of Artificial Intelligence, Brandon Scot Saunders

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis' focus is on the use of Alfred North Whitehead's concept of Actual Entities as a computational tool for computer science and the introduction of a novel usage of Actual Entities as learning agents. Actual Entities are vector based agents that interact within their environment through a process called prehension. It is the combined effect of multiple Actual Entities working within a Colony of Prehending Entities that produces emergent, intelligent behavior. It is not always the case that prehension functions for desired behavior are known beforehand and frequently the functions are too complex to construct by hand. Through the …

Cafm Studies Of Epitaxial Lateral Overgrowth Gan Films, Vishal P. Kasliwal Jan 2007

Cafm Studies Of Epitaxial Lateral Overgrowth Gan Films, Vishal P. Kasliwal

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses the techniques of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and conductiveAFM (CAFM) to study defect sites on GaN films. In particular, these defect sites demonstrate current leakage under reverse-bias conditions that are detrimental to device fabrication. Two growth techniques that were used to improve this leakage behavior for samples in this study included: epitaxial lateral overgrowth (ELO) and nano-ELO using a Si3N4 film. Both techniques decrease defects such as threading dislocations by controlling the nucleation and growth behavior of the GaN films. The EL0 technique uses a patterned dielectric film to laterally grow micron-wide regions (referred to as 'wings') …

Pi-Calculus In Logical Form, Marcello M. Bonsangue, Alexander Kurz Jan 2007

Pi-Calculus In Logical Form, Marcello M. Bonsangue, Alexander Kurz

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Abramsky’s logical formulation of domain theory is extended to encompass the domain theoretic model for picalculus processes of Stark and of Fiore, Moggi and Sangiorgi. This is done by defining a logical counterpart of categorical constructions including dynamic name allocation and name exponentiation, and showing that they are dual to standard constructs in functor categories. We show that initial algebras of functors defined in terms of these constructs give rise to a logic that is sound, complete, and characterises bisimilarity. The approach is modular, and we apply it to derive a logical formulation of pi-calculus. The resulting logic is a …

Plant Assemblage Structure On Barrier Island ‘Pimple’ Dunes At The Virginia Coast Reserve Long-Term Ecological Research Site, Brett A. Mcmillan Jan 2007

Plant Assemblage Structure On Barrier Island ‘Pimple’ Dunes At The Virginia Coast Reserve Long-Term Ecological Research Site, Brett A. Mcmillan

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The habitats at the VCR LTER that were the focus of the current study are the Hog Island and Parramore Island 'pimples', small, rounded dunes forming along main dune ridges of the barrier islands. There are distinct plant assemblage zones found on pimples, although most of these dunes are 10–20 m in diameter. Hypotheses of the study were that fresh water availability was a main determinant of differences between assemblages and that pimple size and location would influence diversity and assemblage structure. Research goals were (1) to describe the plant assemblages on pimples, (2) to relate edaphic and geomorphological factors …

Characterization Of Power Induced Heating And Damage In Fiber Optic Probes For Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy, Nicholas E. Dickenson, E. S. Erickson, O. L. Mooren, R. C. Dunn Jan 2007

Characterization Of Power Induced Heating And Damage In Fiber Optic Probes For Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy, Nicholas E. Dickenson, E. S. Erickson, O. L. Mooren, R. C. Dunn

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Tip-induced sample heating in near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) is studied for fiber optic probes fabricated using the chemical etching technique. To characterize sample heating from etched NSOM probes, the spectra of a thermochromic polymer sample are measured as a function of probe output power, as was previously reported for pulled NSOM probes. The results reveal that sample heating increases rapidly to ~55–60°C as output powers reach ~50 nW. At higher output powers, the sample heating remains approximately constant up to the maximum power studied of ~450 nW. The sample heating profiles measured for etched NSOM probes are consistent with …

The Common Body Of Knowledge: A Framework To Promote Relevant Information Security Research, Kenneth J. Knapp, F. N. Ford, Thomas E. Marshall, R. K. Rainer

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This study proposes using an established common body of knowledge (CBK) as one means of organizing information security literature. Consistent with calls for more relevant information systems (IS) research, this industrydeveloped framework can motivate future research towards topics that are important to the security practitioner. In this review, forty-eight articles from ten IS journals from 1995 to 2004 are selected and cross-referenced to the ten domains of the information security CBK. Further, we distinguish articles as empirical research, frameworks, or tutorials. Generally, this study identified a need for additional empirical research in every CBK domain including topics related to legal …

Information Governance: A Model For Security In Medical Practice, Patricia A. Williams Jan 2007

Information Governance: A Model For Security In Medical Practice, Patricia A. Williams

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Information governance is becoming an important aspect of organisational accountability. In consideration that information is an integral asset of most organisations, the protection of this asset will increasingly rely on organisational capabilities in security. In the medical arena this information is primarily sensitive patient-based information. Previous research has shown that application of security measures is a low priority for primary care medical practice and that awareness of the risks are seriously underestimated. Consequently, information security governance will be a key issue for medical practice in the future. Information security governance is a relatively new term and there is little existing …

A Grounded Theory Approach To Identifying And Measuring Forensic Data Acquisition Tasks, Gregory H. Carlton Jan 2007

A Grounded Theory Approach To Identifying And Measuring Forensic Data Acquisition Tasks, Gregory H. Carlton

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

As a relatively new field of study, little empirical research has been conducted pertaining to computer forensics. This lack of empirical research contributes to problems for practitioners and academics alike.

For the community of practitioners, problems arise from the dilemma of applying scientific methods to legal matters based on anecdotal training methods, and the academic community is hampered by a lack of theory in this evolving field. A research study utilizing a multi-method approach to identify and measure tasks practitioners perform during forensic data acquisitions and lay a foundation for academic theory development was conducted in 2006 in conjunction with …
