Numerical And Asymptotical Study Of Three-Dimensional Wave Packets In A Compressible Boundary Layer, Eric Forgoston, Michael Viergutz, Anatoli Tumin Dec 2006

Numerical And Asymptotical Study Of Three-Dimensional Wave Packets In A Compressible Boundary Layer, Eric Forgoston, Michael Viergutz, Anatoli Tumin

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A three-dimensional wave packet generated by a local disturbance in a two-dimensional hypersonic boundary layer flow is studied with the aid of the previously solved initialvalue problem. The solution can be presented as a sum of modes consisting of continuous and discrete spectra of temporal stability theory. Two discrete modes, known as Mode S and Mode F, are of interest in high-speed flows since they may be involved in a laminar-turbulent transition scenario. The continuous and discrete spectra are analyzed numerically for a hypersonic flow. A comprehensive study of the spectrum is performed, including Reynolds number, Mach number and temperature …

Toxicological Effects Of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds In Bluegill, Pamela Truman Dec 2006

Toxicological Effects Of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds In Bluegill, Pamela Truman

All Theses

The water quality in the Reedy River basin has been shown to be impacted from the diverse and highly urbanized land uses within the watershed. The objective of this study was to examine the observed toxicological effects of EDCs that may be present in the Reedy River watershed by using a suite of biomarkers that were measured in indigenous fish to characterize the exposure and biological effects of these contaminants. Bluegill were analyzed for unnatural estrogenic effects such as: 1) Vitellogenin (VTG) 2) Activity of estrogenic compounds in bile extractions 3) UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) activity. This biomarker study provides a more …

Why Should Primordial Perturbations Be In A Vacuum State?, Christian Armendariz-Picon Dec 2006

Why Should Primordial Perturbations Be In A Vacuum State?, Christian Armendariz-Picon

Physics - All Scholarship

In order to calculate the power spectrum generated during a stage of inflation, we have to specify the quantum state of the inflaton perturbations, which is conventionally assumed to be the Bunch-Davies vacuum. We argue that this choice is justified only if the interactions of cosmological perturbations are strong enough to drive excited states toward the vacuum. We quantify this efficiency by calculating the decay probabilities of excited states to leading order in the slow-roll expansion in canonical single-field inflationary models. These probabilities are suppressed by a slow-roll parameter and the squared Planck mass, and enhanced by ultraviolet and infrared …

Online Resources For Late Additions To The Solar Nebula, Allen Parker Dec 2006

Online Resources For Late Additions To The Solar Nebula, Allen Parker

All Theses

The presence of an excess of short-lived radionuclides in the early protoplanetary disk has been inferred from studying how the distribution of the abundances, in materials like Ca-Al-rich inclusions, differ from the solar abundance distribution (SAD). The likely source of these radioactivites is a supernova that ejected material into the early solar system. This thesis will discuss the solar abundance distribution and how a supernova may have contributed a 'late addition' of material into the early solar system. In addition, we have constructed online resources for studying these topics. This thesis will outline the Solar Abundance Tool, which allows a …

Perfluoroalkyl (Aryl) Sulfonimide Zwitterions, Hua Mei Dec 2006

Perfluoroalkyl (Aryl) Sulfonimide Zwitterions, Hua Mei

All Dissertations

This research focuses on superacid perfluoroalkyl(aryl) sulfonimides and their derivatives as a source of stable zwitterionic salts. The strong resonance stabilization of sulfonimides imparts unexpected stability to the zwitterions.
Two types of zwitterions were investigated. The first are symmetrical diaryliodonium zwitterions (DZs) as potential photo acid generators (PAGs) for microlithography. Driven by the demand for smaller feature sizes in the microelectronics industry, microlithography using shorter wavelength light has evolved and new PAGs are of interest. New DZs are potentially useful because they have good thermal stability and may be structurally modified to alter their spectral absorption characteristics. As an extension …

We report the results of a globally coordinated photometric campaign to search for transits by the P ~ 30 day and P ~ 60 day outer planets of the three-planet system orbiting the nearby M dwarf Gl 876. These two planets experience strong mutual perturbations, which necessitate the use of a dynamical (four-body) model to compute transit ephemerides for the system. Our photometric data have been collected from published archival sources, as well as from our photometric campaigns that were targeted to specific transit predictions. Our analysis indicates that transits by planet c (P ~ 30 days) do not currently …

Quashnet River Survey

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Students from Mashpee High School have been studying water quality of local rivers for a number of years. In the past, the primary focus was on two rivers that flow through the town: the Quashnet River, and Quaker Run. This school year (2006-07) the Mashpee River was added as the third watershed of interest. Each of three Earth Science classes adopted and studied one of the rivers. Students sampled each stream at headwaters and lower reaches for: macroinvertebrates, water chemistry (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, and turbidity) and stream flow (velocity and volume). Data were analyzed, and PowerPoint presentations were …

Following Fall Brook

Watershed Access Lab Projects

This was a study of two sites along Fall Brook, located in Middleborough, MA. Fall Brook has been monitored by MHS students over the past 10 years and is a major tributary of the Taunton River Watershed. The purpose of the study completed this year was to determine how land use affects the nitrate and phosphate levels of Fall Brook. The Wareham Street Site is located next to a horse farm and downstream from several cranberry bogs in a heavily wooded area. The Wood Street Site is located in conservation land, downstream from the Wareham Street Site and has a …

We report on p−Λ,p− ¯Λ¯ ,¯p¯−Λ, and ¯p¯− ¯Λ¯ correlation functions constructed in central Au-Au collisions at √sNN=200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The proton and lambda source size is inferred from the p−Λ and p− ¯Λ¯; correlation functions. It is found to be smaller than the pion source size also measured by the STAR experiment at smaller transverse masses, in agreement with a scenario of a strong universal collective flow. The ¯p¯− Λ and p− ¯Λ¯ correlation functions, which are measured for the first time, exhibit a large anticorrelation. Annihilation channels and/or a negative real …

A Semiparametric Approach For The Nonparametric Transformation Survival Model With Multiple Covariates, Xiao Song, Shuangge Ma, Jian Huang, Xiao-Hua Zhou

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The nonparametric transformation model for survival time that makes no parametric assumptions on both the transformation function and the error is appealing in its flexibility. The nonparametric transformation model makes no assumption on the forms of the transformation function and the error distribution. This model is appealing in its flexibility for modeling censored survival data. Current approaches for estimation of the regression parameters involve maximizing discontinuous objective functions, which are numerically infeasible to implement in the case of multiple covariates. Based on the partial rank estimator (Khan & Tamer, 2004), we propose a smoothed partial rank estimator which maximizes a …

Fate Of Fish Production In A Seasonally Flooded Saltmarsh, Philip W. Stevens, Clay L. Montague, Kenneth J. Sulak Dec 2006

Fate Of Fish Production In A Seasonally Flooded Saltmarsh, Philip W. Stevens, Clay L. Montague, Kenneth J. Sulak

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Although saltmarshes are thought to enhance the productivity of open estuarine water, the mechanism by which energy transfer occurs has been debated for decades. One possible mechanism is the transfer of saltmarsh production to estuarine waters by vagile fishes and invertebrates. Monthly estimates of fish standing stock, net fish ingress, and predation were used to develop a bio-mass budget to estimates annual production of fishes and the relative yield to predatory fish, birds, and direct migration to the estuary. Annual production of saltmarsh fishes was estimated to 31.0 gm-2 saltmarsh, which falls within the range of previously reported values …

Determining the consequences of human impact on our current and future climate is proving to be to be one of the greater challenges in modern biology. Current global models employing coupled atmosphere and terrestrial carbon feedbacks range in their predictions from the inconsequential to that of vast food shortages and species extinctions. However, there is hope that the emergence of new molecular approaches will revolutionize our understanding of plant and animal responses to a changing environment, allowing for higher predictive power when scaling up from the level of the individual to ecosystem-scale processes. This dissertation is an initial attempt for …

Characterization Of Capillary-Channeled Polymer Fibers As Stationary Phases For High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Of Macromolecules, Dwella Nelson Dec 2006

Characterization Of Capillary-Channeled Polymer Fibers As Stationary Phases For High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Of Macromolecules, Dwella Nelson

All Dissertations

Capillary-channeled polymer (C-CP) fibers are being developed and characterized as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) stationary phases for reversed-phase separations of proteins. Conventional porous phases are not well suited for separating large macromolecules due to the slow diffusivity of the molecules, large diffusional distances, and stagnant mobile phase zones within the column. Stationary phases are continually being developed to address the challenges associated with HPLC of proteins and other macromolecules in general. C-CP fiber stationary phases are an alternative to conventional bead technology and offer a variety of chemical and physical advantages. The fibers can be selected for their chemical functionality …

Managing Product Line Asset Bases, John Hunt Dec 2006

Managing Product Line Asset Bases, John Hunt

All Dissertations

Product lines are predicated on collecting assets common to the desired product portfolio, commonly known as the asset base. For many product lines, the size of asset base has become large enough to create a variety of difficulties. The techniques for managing large product line asset bases are unaddressed in the literature.
This research presents new techniques that take advantage of asset base characteristics, unavailable in more general collections, to both reduce the number of assets and to organize the asset base that go beyond what is possible with other software collections. The result is an asset base that is …

Analysis Of Near-Infrared Phase Effects On Biometric Iris Data, Brady Roos Stevenson Dec 2006

Analysis Of Near-Infrared Phase Effects On Biometric Iris Data, Brady Roos Stevenson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to ascertain potential iris scan data variations from near infrared waves derived from fluorescent illumination. Prior studies of iris data variances from infrared wave interference of halogen, incandescent, and sunlight with iris cameras suggest that similar changes may exist under near infrared wavelengths from fluorescent light. The concern is that the fluorescent energy emission may interfere with the near infrared detection of an iris camera. An iris camera is used to measure human eye characteristics known as biometrics. If such infrared emission is statistically significant, then it can alter the validity of the iris …

Modified Control Software For Imaging Ultracold Atomic Clouds, Dwight L. Whitaker, A. Sharma, J. M. Brown

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

A charge-coupled device (CCD) camera capable of taking high-quality images of ultracold atomic samples can often represent a significant portion of the equipment costs in atom trapping experiment. We have modified the commercial control software of a CCD camera designed for astronomical imaging to take absorption images of ultracold rubidium clouds. This camera is sensitive at 780 nm and has been modified to take three successive 16-bit images at full resolution. The control software can be integrated into a Matlab graphical user interface with fitting routines written as Matlab functions. This camera is capable of recording high-quality images at a …

Collisions Of Red-Tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis), Turkey Vultures (Cathartes Aura), And Black Vultures (Coragyps Atratus) With Aircraft: Implications For Bird Strike Reduction, Bradley F. Blackwell, Sandra E. Wright Dec 2006

Collisions Of Red-Tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis), Turkey Vultures (Cathartes Aura), And Black Vultures (Coragyps Atratus) With Aircraft: Implications For Bird Strike Reduction, Bradley F. Blackwell, Sandra E. Wright

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

From 1990 through 2003, 52,493 wildlife collisions with aircraft were reported to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); 97% of these incidents involved birds. The approximate cost to the civil aviation industry in the U.S.A. due to collisions of birds with aircraft (hereafter referred to as bird strikes) was $163.51 million in direct monetary losses and associated costs for the 14 year period (Cleary et al. 2004). Strikes with raptors (Falconidae and Accipitridae; including vultures, Cathartidae)accounted for approximately 28% of reported aircraft down time resulting from known-species bird strikes (known species =182942 hr; total for all birds = 244510 hr) …

Structural Study Of Mn-Doped Zno Fi Lms By Tem, Xingzhong Li, Jun Zhang, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

The structural study of diluted magnetic semiconductors is important for interpreting the ferromagnetic behavior associated with the materials. In the present work, a series of low concentration Mn-doped ZnO thin films synthesized by pulsed laser deposition was studied by electron microscopy. All films show the wurtzite structure with (001) preferred growth orientation on the Si substrate. Electron diffraction experiments indicate the deterioration of the growth orientation in some areas of the films with increasing Mn concentration, and the existence of a secondary phase, of Mn2O3-type, in the films with larger Mn concentrations. High-resolution electron microscopy images …

Asymmetric Games For Convolution Systems With Applications To Feedback Control Of Constrained Parabolic Equations, Boris S. Mordukhovich Dec 2006

Asymmetric Games For Convolution Systems With Applications To Feedback Control Of Constrained Parabolic Equations, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper is devoted to the study of some classes of feedback control problems for linear parabolic equations subject to hard/pointwise constraints on both Dirichlet boundary controls and state dynamic/output functions in the presence of uncertain perturbations within given regions. The underlying problem under consideration, originally motivated by automatic control of the groundwater regime in irrigation networks, is formalized as a minimax problemof optimal control, where the control strategy is sought as a feedback law. Problems of this type are among the most important in control theory and applications - while most challenging and difficult. Based on the Maximum Principle …

Information Security Management And Virtual Collaboration: A Western Australian Perspective, Rosanna Fanciulli Dec 2006

Information Security Management And Virtual Collaboration: A Western Australian Perspective, Rosanna Fanciulli

Australian Information Security Management Conference

This paper presents an ongoing case study into stakeholder perceptions regarding information security management systems in emergent organisations operating in Western Australia. It takes a socio-political perspective on the problem of how to manage simultaneously virtual collaboration and information security management. A literature review introduces the context and history of the research. In light of this, it is proposed that social and political issues need to be researched and addressed before many of the existing technological strategies for information security will succeed. The research project is then outlined and the design and preliminary results presented. The results point to a …

Visualization Of Polymer Processing At The Continuum Level, Jeremy Hicks Dec 2006

Visualization Of Polymer Processing At The Continuum Level, Jeremy Hicks

All Theses

Computer animation, coupled with scientific experimentation and modeling, allows scientists to produce detailed visualizations that potentially enable more comprehensive perception of physical phenomena and ultimately, new discoveries. With the use of Maya, an animation and modeling program that incorporates the natural laws of physics to control the behavior of virtual objects in computer animation, data from the modeling of physical processes such as polymer fibers and films can be explored in the visual realm. Currently, few attempts have been made at the continuum level to represent polymer properties via computer animation using advanced graphics. As a result, scientists may be …

Path Integral Formulation Of Langeinv Dynamics With Applications To Rare-Event Systems, Bradley Dickson Dec 2006

Path Integral Formulation Of Langeinv Dynamics With Applications To Rare-Event Systems, Bradley Dickson

All Dissertations

In the last decade great efforts have been made to efficiently study the behaviors of rare-event systems. The methods and theories developed in pursuit of this goal are far from unified and are instead applied on a case-by-case basis where one makes a best educated guess as to which approach may afford the greatest chance of studying the rare-event system in question. The work contained here is directed at further development of one of these sets of methods and theories. Specifically, a new theory of dynamics in the Langevin path space is developed with emphasis on generating and sampling Langevin …

Outsourcing: The Security Risk Management Challenge, Carl Colwill Dec 2006

Outsourcing: The Security Risk Management Challenge, Carl Colwill

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The globalisation of business and the growth of the digital networked economy means that virtually any business process can be undertaken by someone else, somewhere in the world. To achieve business transformation within the UK Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, BT is taking a strategic approach to outsourcing: this has resulted in a rapid and substantial increase in the outsourcing and offshoring of ICT development, maintenance and support contracts. Each and every outsourcing decision could have major security, legal, regulatory and contractual impacts. It is generally recognised that risks are likely to be compounded when outsourcing to companies based …

The Information Security Ownership Question In Iso/Iec 27001 – An Implementation, Lizzie Coles-Kemp, Richard E. Overill Dec 2006

The Information Security Ownership Question In Iso/Iec 27001 – An Implementation, Lizzie Coles-Kemp, Richard E. Overill

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The information security management standard ISO/IEC 27001 is built on the notion that information security is driven by risk assessment and risk treatment. Fundamental to the success of risk assessment and treatment is the decision making process that takes risk assessment output and assigns decisions to this output in terms of risk treatment actions. It is argued that the effectiveness of the management system lies in its ability to make effective, easytoimplement and measurable decisions. One of the key issues in decision making is ownership. In this paper two aspects of information security ownership are considered: ownership of the asset …
