High-resolution studies of dental tissues are of considerable interest for biomedical engineering and clinical applications. In this paper, we demonstrate the application of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) to nanoscale imaging of internal structure of human teeth by monitoring the local mechanical response to an electrical bias applied via a conductive tip. It is shown that PFM is capable of detecting dissimilar components of dental tissues, namely, proteins and calcified matrix, which have resembling morphology but different piezoelectric properties. It is demonstrated that collagen fibrils revealed in chemically treated intertubular dentin exhibit high piezoelectric activity and can be visualized in PFM …

We present Follow-Up Network for Gamma-Ray Bursts (FUN GRB) Collaboration observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 021211 made between 143 s and 102 days after the burst. Our unique data set includes the earliest filtered detections and color information for an afterglow in the pre-Swift era. We find that the afterglow is best described by (1) a propagation through a wind-swept medium, (2) a cooling break that is blueward of the observed optical frequencies, and (3) a hard electron energy distribution. However, superimposed on this ‘‘standard model’’ behavior we find, one and possibly two, significant chromatic variations during the …

We present BIMA and IRAM CO (1-0) observations of seven low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies, including three large spiral galaxies with faint disks but prominent bulges and four relatively small LSB galaxies with irregular disks. The giant LSB galaxies are UGC 5709, UGC 6614, and F568-6 (Malin 2). The smaller LSB galaxies are NGC 5585, UGC 4115, UGC 5209, and F583-1. The galaxies were selected based on their relatively high metallicity and apparent signs of star formation in their disks. The BIMA maps suggested the presence of molecular gas in two of the giant LSB galaxies: F568-6 and UGC 6614. …

BACKGROUND: Increased focus surrounds identifying patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who will benefit from treatment with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI). EGFR mutation, gene copy number, coexpression of ErbB proteins and ligands, and epithelial to mesenchymal transition markers all correlate with EGFR TKI sensitivity, and while prediction of sensitivity using any one of the markers does identify responders, individual markers do not encompass all potential responders due to high levels of inter-patient and inter-tumor variability. We hypothesized that a multivariate predictor of EGFR TKI sensitivity based on gene expression data would offer a …

The new iodobismuthate compound (C13H11N2O)4[Bi6I22] has been synthesized solvothermally by reacting BiI3, Zn(NO3)2·6H2O and 4,5-diazafluoren-9-one in a water/ethanol solvent mixture. The asymmetric unit of the compound contains two independent [N-ethyl-4,5-dafo]+ cations and one-half of a centrosymmetric [Bi6I22]4- anion. The average terminal Bi-I, Bi-2-I and Bi-3-I bond lengths in the anion are 2.8923 (2), 3.1403 (2) and 3.3022 (2) Å, respectively.

The RemoteLink effort supports the U.S. Army's objective for developing and fielding next generation hybrid-electric combat vehicles. It is a distributed soldierin- the-Ioop and hardware-in-the-Ioop environment with a 6-DOF motion base for operator realism, a full-scale combat hybrid electric power system, and an operational context provided by OneSAF. The driver/gunner crewstations rest on one of two 6-DOF motion bases at the U.S. Army TARDEC Simulation Laboratory (TSL). The hybrid power system is located 2,450 miles away at the TARDEC Power and Energy System Integration Laboratory (P&E SIL). The primary technical challenge in the RemoteLink is to operate both laboratories together …

Lowest-order nondipole effects are studied in double photoionization (DPI) of the He atom. Ah initio parametrizations of the quadrupole transition amplitude for DPI from the 1S0state are presented in terms of the exact two-electron reduced matrix elements. Parametrizations for the dipole-quadrupole triply differential cross section (TDCS) and doubly differential cross section (DDCS) are presented in terms of polarization-independent amplitudes for the case of an elliptically polarized photon. Expressions for the DDCS in terms of the reduced two-electron matrix elements are also given. A general analysis of retardation-induced asymmetries of the TDCS including the circular dichroism effect at …

We present the results of an analysis of line profiles of high- and low-ionization broad emission lines in 8 AGNs observed by the Hubble Space Telescope. We derive the physical conditions in the gas as a function of velocity. We find no evidence for a separate intermediate line region. For the broad line region as a whole we find a major contradiction between the velocity dependencies of conditions deduced from the major high-ionization lines and those deduced from the hydrogen lines alone if they are assumed to come from the same gas clouds. The hydrogen lines imply that the density …

We present a Chandra-LETGS observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279. This observation was carried out simultaneously with HST-STIS and FUSE, in the context of a multiwavelength study of this source. The Chandra pointings were spread over ten days for a total exposure time of ~360 ks. The maximal continuum flux variation is of the order of 30%. The spectrum of Mrk 279 shows evidence of broad emission features, especially at the wavelength of the O VII triplet. We quantitatively explore the possibility that this emission is produced in the broad line region (BLR). We modeled the broad …

Seasonal trends in inner shelf subtidal circulation off the coast of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, are examined through the analysis of current profiles, hydrographic, meteorological and satellite data collected from 1999 to 2002. During the dry season (December–April) the water column is well-mixed and along-shelf currents flow southwestward following the steady trade winds. In the rainy season (May –November) the water column experiences continuous events of stratification and the along-shelf currents flow northeastward, opposing the weak southwestward winds. In the dry season the along shelfcirculation is mostly driven by wind forcing, while in the rainy season, the circulation is set …
Smoothed Rank Regression With Censored Data, Glenn Heller
Smoothed Rank Regression With Censored Data, Glenn Heller
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series
A weighted rank estimating function is proposed to estimate the regression parameter vector in an accelerated failure time model with right censored data. In general, rank estimating functions are discontinuous in the regression parameter, creating difficulties in determining the asymptotic distribution of the estimator. A local distribution function is used to create a rank based estimating function that is continuous and monotone in the regression parameter vector. A weight is included in the estimating function to produce a bounded influence estimate. The asymptotic distribution of the regression estimator is developed and simulations are performed to examine its finite sample properties. …

Above-threshold detachment (ATD) rates for H1 and F1 ions in the high-energy plateau region are calculated as functions of photon number and laser intensity by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation within the Sturmian-Floquet approach. Pronounced enhancements of the ATD rates are found (up to an order of magnitude) as the laser-field intensity passes across ponderomotive-potential-induced channel closings. We confirm the zero-range potential model results of Borca et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 193001 (2002)] for negative ions whose initial states have s symmetry, and we investigate here the case of initial states having p symmetry. Depending on …
Learning In Short-Time Horizons With Measurable Costs, Patrick Bowen Mullen
Learning In Short-Time Horizons With Measurable Costs, Patrick Bowen Mullen
Theses and Dissertations
Dynamic pricing is a difficult problem for machine learning. The environment is noisy, dynamic and has a measurable cost associated with exploration that necessitates that learning be done in short-time horizons. These short-time horizons force the learning algorithms to make pricing decisions based on scarce data. In this work, various machine learning algorithms are compared in the context of dynamic pricing. These algorithms include the Kalman filter, artificial neural networks, particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithms. The majority of these algorithms have been modified to handle the pricing problem. The results show that these adaptations allow the learning algorithms to …

We measure the dimuon charge asymmetry A in pp̅ collisions at a center of mass energy √s =1960 GeV. The data was recorded with the D0 detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 1:0 fb-1. Assuming that the asymmetry A is due to asymmetric B0 ↔ B̅ mixing and decay, we extract the CP-violation parameter of B0 mixing and decay: [ℜ(∊B0)]/[1+∣∊B0∣2 = (AB0)/4 = -0.0023 ± 0.0011 (stat) ± 0.0008(syst). Properties Of Monotonic Effects, Tyler J. Vanderweele, James M. Robins
COBRA Preprint Series
Various relationships are shown hold between monotonic effects and weak monotonic effects and the monotonicity of certain conditional expectations. This relationship is considered for both binary and non-binary variables. Counterexamples are provide to show that the results do not hold under less restrictive conditions. The ideas of monotonic effects are furthermore used to relate signed edges on a directed acyclic graph to qualitative effect modification.
Multiple Testing With An Empirical Alternative Hypothesis, James E. Signorovitch
Multiple Testing With An Empirical Alternative Hypothesis, James E. Signorovitch
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
An optimal multiple testing procedure is identified for linear hypotheses under the general linear model, maximizing the expected number of false null hypotheses rejected at any significance level. The optimal procedure depends on the unknown data-generating distribution, but can be consistently estimated. Drawing information together across many hypotheses, the estimated optimal procedure provides an empirical alternative hypothesis by adapting to underlying patterns of departure from the null. Proposed multiple testing procedures based on the empirical alternative are evaluated through simulations and an application to gene expression microarray data. Compared to a standard multiple testing procedure, it is not unusual for …

Dynamic Shadow Removal From Front Projection Displays, Christopher O. Jaynes
Dynamic Shadow Removal From Front Projection Displays, Christopher O. Jaynes
Computer Science Faculty Patents
A technique and system for detecting a radiometric variation/artifacts of a front-projected dynamic display region under observation by at least one camera. The display is comprised of one or more images projected from one or more of a plurality of projectors; the system is preferably calibrated by using a projective relationship. A predicted image of the display region by the camera is constructed using frame-buffer information from each projector contributing to the display, which has been geometrically transformed for the camera and its relative image intensity adjusted. A detectable difference between a predicted image and the display region under observation …

Doubly Penalized Buckley-James Method For Survival Data With High-Dimensional Covariates, Sijian Wang, Bin Nan, Ji Zhu, David G. Beer
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Recent interest in cancer research focuses on predicting patients' survival by investigating gene expression profiles based on microarray analysis. We propose a doubly penalized Buckley-James method for the semiparametric accelerated failure time model to relate high-dimensional genomic data to censored survival outcomes, which uses a mixture of L1-norm and L2-norm penalties. Similar to the elastic-net method for linear regression model with uncensored data, the proposed method performs automatic gene selection and parameter estimation, where highly correlated genes are able to be selected (or removed) together. The two-dimensional tuning parameter is determined by cross-validation and uniform design. …

Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)
We applied cultural anthropological, ethological, and parasitological methodologies to investigate the interplay among three primate species, ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), Verreaux’s sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi), and humans (Homo sapiens) who live within the same habitat (i.e. in sympatry) around the Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, Madagascar. Through a fusion of these methodologies we hope to provide a holistic understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of human-nonhuman primate sympatry. Interviews and questionnaires provided us with initial insights regarding the local peoples' attitudes toward sympatric strepsirrhine primates. Origin myths indicate a close association between humans, ring-tailed lemurs, and …

Human Dimensions Of Northern Muriqui Conservation Efforts, Karen B. Strier, Jean P. Boubli, Francisco B. Pontual, Sergio L. Mendes
Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)
The northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) is endemic to Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, and it ranks among the most critically endangered primates in the world. Roughly 25% of the species is found in the 957 ha forest at the Estação Biológica de Caratinga/RPPN-Feliciano Miguel Abdala, in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The long-term research and conservation efforts at this site have received considerable attention, and public awareness and educational campaigns about northern muriquis have been highly effective. Nonetheless, very little about the human dimensions of these efforts have been explicitly described. In this paper, we focus on three distinct, but interconnected dimensions: …
Human-Nonhuman Primate Interconnections And Their Relevance To Anthropology, Agustin Fuentes
Human-Nonhuman Primate Interconnections And Their Relevance To Anthropology, Agustin Fuentes
Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)
The human-nonhuman primate interface is a core component in conservation and an emerging area of discourse across anthropology. There is a growing recognition of the relevance of long-term sympatry between human and nonhuman primates. Until recently these relationships received limited attention in the anthropological literature and in the primatological construction of models for the behavior and evolution of primate societies. Most socioecological investigations into primate groups and human populations do not incorporate their interactions (beyond predation or crop raiding), potential pathogen sharing, or the role of the anthropogenically impacted environment. Current relationships between humans and nonhuman primates are generally assumed …
Ethnoprimatology: Toward Reconciliation Of Biological And Cultural Anthropology, Erin P. Riley
Ethnoprimatology: Toward Reconciliation Of Biological And Cultural Anthropology, Erin P. Riley
Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)
One of the hallmarks of the discipline of anthropology is its holistic approach to the study of what it means to be human. A perennial challenge to the discipline, however, is the question of whether biological and cultural anthropology can truly coexist given their traditionally disparate epistemologies and methodologies. In this paper, I argue that the emerging field of ethnoprimatology, which focuses on the ecological and cultural interconnections between human and nonhuman primates, has real potential to bridge these two subfields. I support my argument by discussing the theoretical rationale of an ethnoprimatological approach with regard to the notion of …

Human And Non-Human Primate Co-Existence In The Neotropics: A Preliminary View Of Some Agricultural Practices As A Complement For Primate Conservation, Alejandro Estrada
Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)
In this paper I address the general perception that agricultural activities are the principal threat to primate biodiversity in the tropics and argue that in Neotropical landscapes some agricultural practices may favor primate population persistence, and that this situation merits attention and investigation. To explore these issues, I examined three interrelated pressures upon tropical forests for the Mesoamerican and Amazon basin regions: human population growth trends, levels of poverty and human development and deforestation rates. I also present relevant results of recent surveys completed on the presence and activities of primate populations in agroecosystems in several landscapes in Mesoamerica. I …

Primate Sanctuaries, Taxonomy And Survival: A Case Study From South Africa, Paul Grobler, Magali Jacquier, Helene Denys, Mary Blair, Patricia L. Whitten, Trudy R. Turner
Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)
The relationship between humans and non-human primates in South Africa is problematic. On the one hand, vervet monkeys were formerly designated vermin species and could be destroyed at will. On the other hand, many people keep young vervets as pets even though this is illegal, and the animals are confiscated if discovered. Sanctuaries were established to accommodate large numbers of orphaned and confiscated animals. Owners of some of these sanctuaries attempt to establish normal troop structures in the hopes of releasing these animals back into the wild and relieving overcrowding. However, local farmers, fearing crop damage, resist this release. Nature …
Coexistence And Exclusion Between Humans And Monkeys In Japan: Is Either Really Possible?, David S. Sprague, Nobusuke Iwasaki
Coexistence And Exclusion Between Humans And Monkeys In Japan: Is Either Really Possible?, David S. Sprague, Nobusuke Iwasaki
Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)
The Japanese people face a cultural and ecological challenge in seeking a new relationship between themselves and the Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). Monkeys are a major agricultural pest. Monkey habitat often lies within a short distance from fields and villages, and vice versa, especially in mountainous areas. The idealized solution is a form of coexistence where humans and monkeys somehow negotiate a harmonious compromise. A word used often in Japanese is kyosei, to live in common, implying a more intimate relation than mere side-by-side coexistence. In practice, kyosei is a word used by policy makers or scholars, but less often …

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a monolayer of cells located directly behind the photoreceptor cells in the retina. These cells are involved in a variety of functions that support the visual process in the eye, namely 1) they form a blood-retina barrier which separates the neural retina from the choroid's blood supply, 2) the apical processes of RPE cells diurnally phagocytose the outer segments of photoreceptor cells, and 3) they participate in the renewal of the photopigment 11-cis retinal. Age-related macular degneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 50 years in North …

We present near-infrared spectra of late-phase (>200 days) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) taken at the Subaru Telescope. The [Fe II] line of SN 2003hv shows a clear flat-topped feature, while that of SN 2005W shows a less prominent flatness. In addition, a large shift in their line center, varying from -3000 to 1000 km s-1 with respect to the host galaxies, is seen. Such a shift suggests the occurrence of an off-center, nonspherical explosion in the central region and provides important, new constraints on the explosion models of SNe Ia.

A century ago, J. J. Thomson showed that the scattering of low-intensity light by electrons was a linear process (i.e., the scattered light frequency was identical to that of the incident light) and that light’s magnetic field played no role. To- day, with the recent invention of ultra-high-peak- power lasers it is now possible to create a sufficient photon density to study Thomson scattering in the relativistic regime. With increasing light intensity, electrons quiver during the scattering process with increasing velocity, approaching the speed of light when the laser intensity approaches 1018 W/cm2. In this limit, the …

Ontologies enable us to elevate syntactic and structural processing in an information system/Web to an information system/Web powered with semantic processing. Experience has shown that monolithic and tightly coupled approaches seldom succeed, and majority of information systems and applications will need to deal with plurality of ontologies in a loosely coupled environment (i.e., independently evolving ontologies and inter-ontology relationships, existence of different contexts for different users/applications etc.) Development of such loosely-coupled multi-ontology environments entails development of techniques for ontology mapping/alignment, multi-ontology query processing, and much more.
