Computer Based Methodologies For On-Line Scanning Force Microscopic Detection Of Immunological Binding Events, Patrick Joseph O'Mahony

The overall aim of this work was to develop computer based methodologies for the on-line scanning force microscopic detection of immunological binding events. To achieve this aim it was necessary to develop a rapid, high-resolution data acquisition system to digitise scanning force microscope (SFM) data on-line and then to develop an effective method for extracting the scanner induced background curvature from this data to reveal the nanoscale height binding events. Four techniques were investigated in terms of operational speed and performance accuracy; namely, polynomial interpolation; least squares approximation; real-time recursive least squares approximation; and wavelet approximation.

Adaptive Information Filtering is concerned with filtering information streams in changing environments. The changes may occur both on the transmission side (the nature of the streams can change) and on the reception side (the interests of a user can change). The research described in this report details the progress made in a prototype Adaptive Information Filtering system based on weighted trigram analysis and evolutionary computation. We propose a new fingerprint image compression scheme based on the hybrid model of an image. Our scheme uses the essential steps of a typical automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS) such as enhancement, binarization and thinning to encode fingerprint images. The decoding process is based on reconstructing a hybrid surface by using the gray values on ridges and valleys. In this compression scheme, the ridge skeleton is coded efficiently by using differential chain codes. Testosterone acetate thiosemicarbazone (TATSC, 17-β-hydroxyandrost-4-one acetate thiosemicarbazone) was synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray structure determination. The copper and platinum complexes of this steroid derivative were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopy and electrochemiatry. The in vitro activity of these compounds against human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 was tested. The highest activity was found for the [Pt(TATSC)Cl 2] followed by [Cu(TATSC)Cl 2] and the ligand in compariosn with cisplatin.

The two imidazole rings in the title compound, C₈H₁₀N₄O, are almost coplanar, having an angle of 2.3 (2)° about the C-C bond connecting the rings. the conformation adopted is such that the nitrogen substituents (-H and -CH₂CH₂OH) are in a trans orientation. the molecules are connected by intermolecular O-H. . .O and N-H. . .N hydrogen bonds to yield an arrangement of pairs of molecules reminiscent of side-by-side stacks of crinkled ribbon.

A deeper understanding of low-dimensional and small-scale electronic systems requires an accurate characterization of the many-electron effects. Based on the electron liquid (EL) model, these many-body effects in the three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems are dealt going beyond the random phase approximation within the zero-temperature framework. The dielectric formulation of the many-body problem is recapitulated and the longitudinal dielectric function of the EL is obtained using the self-consistent local-field correction scheme, known as STLS, under a general spin-valley degeneracy.
