Usability Of Visual Basic For Parallel Programming On Windows Nt, James Scott Barker Jul 1998

Usability Of Visual Basic For Parallel Programming On Windows Nt, James Scott Barker

Dissertations and Theses

Visual Basic is a very popular language. Many hardware engineers have learned Visual Basic because of its simplicity, but have never learned C or C++. Furthermore, people are choosing not to use C or C++ for business software development, but instead are embracing languages such as Visual Basic. Since one of the goals of the parallel programming community has been to encourage more widespread use of parallelism in software, this body of programming talent needs to be addressed.

This thesis intends to prove that Visual Basic can be used for parallel programming, that using it is at least as easy …

Maximally Disjoint Solutions Of The Set Covering Problem, David J. Rader, Peter L. Hammer Jul 1998

Maximally Disjoint Solutions Of The Set Covering Problem, David J. Rader, Peter L. Hammer

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

This paper is concerned with finding two solutions of a set covering problem that have a minimum number of variables in common. We show that this problem is NP complete, even in the case where we are only interested in completely disjoint solutions. We describe three heuristic methods based on the standard greedy algorithm for set covering problems. Two of these algorithms find the solutions sequentially, while the third finds them simultaneously. A local search method for reducing the overlap of the two given solutions is then described. This method involves the solution of a reduced set covering problem. Finally, …

Observation Of B+→ΩK+ And Search For Related B Decays Modes, T. Bergfeld, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration Jul 1998

Observation Of B+→ΩK+ And Search For Related B Decays Modes, T. Bergfeld, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We have searched for two-body charmless decays of B mesons to purely hadronic exclusive final states including ω or φ mesons using data collected with the CLEO II detector. With this sample of 6.6 X 106 B mesons we observe a signal for the ωK+ final state, and measure a branching fraction of Ɓ(B+→ωK+) = (1.5-0.6+0.7 ± 0.2) X 10-5. We also observe some evidence for the φK* final state, and upper limits are given for 22 other decay modes. These results provide the opportunity …

Algebraic Shape Invariant Models, S Chaturvedi, Ranabir Dutt, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Prasanta K. Panigrahi, C. Rasinariu, Uday P. Sukhatme

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Motivated by the shape invariance condition in supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we develop an algebraic framework for shape invariant Hamiltonians with a general change of parameters. This approach involves nonlinear generalizations of Lie algebras. Our work extends previous results showing the equivalence of shape invariant potentials involving translational change of parameters with standard SO (2,1) potential algebra for Natanzon type potentials.

The Extraction And Coordination Chemistry Of An Organophosphorus Ligand: The Synthesis And Characterization Of Organophosphorus Ligands And Dendrimers Using The Michael-Type Addition, Evelyn M. Bond

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In chapter 1, the liquid/ liquid extraction of americium (III) from nitric and hydrochloric acid solutions with chloroform solutions of 2, 6 bis[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]pyridine N, P, P' trioxide (ENOPOPO) is examined. Americium (III) is efficiently extracted from aqueous solutions at high nitric acid concentrations (DAm > 3000 at 6 M HNO3) and can be totally back extracted from the organic phrase at 0.01 M HNO3. The ligand dependency data suggest that two ligand molecules are coordinated to the americium. From hydrochloric acid solutions, ENPOPO exhibits modest extraction ability for americium (III) (DAm = 2.2 at 5 M …

Carbon nanotubes combine a range of properties that make them well suited for use as probe tips in applications such as atomic force microscopy (AFM)1, 2, 3. Their high aspect ratio, for example, opens up the possibility of probing the deep crevices4 that occur in microelectronic circuits, and the small effective radius of nanotube tips significantly improves the lateral resolution beyond what can be achieved using commercial silicon tips5. Another characteristic feature of nanotubes is their ability to buckle elastically4, 6, which makes them very robust while limiting the maximum force that is …

Effects Of Randomness And Spatially Dependent Relaxation On Sandpile Models, Isiaka O. Akanbi Jul 1998

Effects Of Randomness And Spatially Dependent Relaxation On Sandpile Models, Isiaka O. Akanbi

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Random deposition represents the simplest growth model. From a randomly chosen site over the surface, a particle falls vertically until it reaches the top of the interface, whereupon it sticks irreversibly. To include surface relaxation, we allow the deposited particle to diffuse along the surface up to a finite distance, stopping when it finds the position with the lowest height. As a result of the relaxation process, the final interface will be smooth, compared to the model without relaxation. In this research we investigate two types of randomness in the relaxation of sandpile models when the slop at some point …

Seismic Reflection Imaging Of A Geothermal Aquifer In An Urban Setting, Lee Liberty Jul 1998

Seismic Reflection Imaging Of A Geothermal Aquifer In An Urban Setting, Lee Liberty

CGISS Publications and Presentations

A seismic reflection survey that was conducted in downtown Boise, Idaho, to help city planners site a new well for injection of spent geothermal water illustrates some methods to safely and successfully employ a seismic reflection survey in an urban setting. The objective of the seismic survey was to estimate the depth and continuity of a basalt and rhyolite volcanic sequence. Well siting was based on geothermal aquifer depth, location of interpreted faults, projected thermal impact of injection on existing wells, surface pipe extension costs, and public land availability. Seismic acquisition tests and careful processing were used to ensure high-quality …

Review Of Visual Complex Analysis, By Tristan Needham, Frank A. Farris

Mathematics and Computer Science

Tristan Needham's Visual Complex Analysis will show you the field of complex analysis in a way you almost certainly have not seen before. Drawing on historical sources and adding his own insights, Needham develops the subject from the ground up, drawing attractive pictures at every step of the way. If you have time for a year course, full of fascinating detours, this is the perfect text; by picking and choosing, you could use it for a variety of shorter courses. I am tempted to hide the book from my own students, in order to appear the more clever for popping …

Single Crystal Raman Spectra Of 1,2,4,5-Tetrabromobenzene: Calculational And Experimental Assignment Of The Internal Modes, K.M. White, Craig J. Eckhardt Jul 1998

Single Crystal Raman Spectra Of 1,2,4,5-Tetrabromobenzene: Calculational And Experimental Assignment Of The Internal Modes, K.M. White, Craig J. Eckhardt

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

A detailed study of the fundamental internal modes of the 1,2,4,5-tetrabromobenzene crystal has provided assignments of Raman-active modes consistent with polarized single-crystal measurements. A normal-mode calculation based on a valence force field derived from brominated and chlorinated benzenes is found to be in excellent agreement with the assignments. Additional bands arising from anharmonic interactions of the fundamentals are also assigned.

Information Storage Capacity Of Incompletely Connected Associative Memories, Holger Bosch, Franz J. Kurfess Jul 1998

Information Storage Capacity Of Incompletely Connected Associative Memories, Holger Bosch, Franz J. Kurfess

Computer Science and Software Engineering

In this paper, the memory capacity of incompletely connected associative memories is investigated. First, the capacity is derived for memories with fixed parameters. Optimization of the parameters yields a maximum capacity between 0.53 and 0.69 for hetero-association and half of it for auto-association improving previously reported results. The maximum capacity grows with increasing connectivity of the memory and requires sparse input and output patterns. Further, parameters can be chosen in such a way that the information content per pattern asymptotically approaches 1 with growing size of the memory.

Low Energy Electron Gun Power Control Unit, Chad Fish, Jr Dennison Jul 1998

Low Energy Electron Gun Power Control Unit, Chad Fish, Jr Dennison

Senior Theses and Projects

Near-Earth orbiting spacecraft are subject to a variety of physical environmental elements. Of these, natural space plasma and solar radiation produce spacecraft charging. Spacecraft charging consists of surface (external) and deep (internal) dielectric charging.

Natural space plasma is composed of electrons and positively charged atoms called ions. The plasma is generated by energy from solar radiation and high energy particles emitted by geomagnetic storms. The electrons produce a negative current and the ions produce a positive current. Positive photoelectron currents produced by solar radiation of spacecraft surfaces also add to the electrical fluxesi.

As spacecraft move through the …

Final-State-Interaction Effects On One- And Two-Photon Detachment Of H- In The Presence Of A Static Electric Field, Min-Qi Bao, Ilya I. Fabrikant, Anthony F. Starace Jul 1998

Final-State-Interaction Effects On One- And Two-Photon Detachment Of H- In The Presence Of A Static Electric Field, Min-Qi Bao, Ilya I. Fabrikant, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

We present a detailed theoretical formulation of the problem of an electron moving in a static electric field, a laser field, and an atomic potential. Our formulation treats the electron-atom interaction in the zero-range potential approximation and employs both the quasienergy approach and an analytic expression for the Green’s function describing electron propagation in a combination of static and laser electric fields. Our formulation is applied to one- and two-photon detachment of H- in a strong static electric field and takes into account all final-state interactions of the detached electron with the static and laser fields and with the …

Invariants Of Twist-Wise Flow Equivalence, Michael C. Sullivan Jul 1998

Invariants Of Twist-Wise Flow Equivalence, Michael C. Sullivan

Articles and Preprints

Flow equivalence of irreducible nontrivial square nonnegative integer matrices is completely determined by two computable invariants, the Parry-Sullivan number and the Bowen-Franks group. Twist-wise flow equivalence is a natural generalization that takes account of twisting in the local stable manifold of the orbits of a flow. Two new invariants in this category are established.

Gray Wolf (Canis Lupus) Jul 1998

Gray Wolf (Canis Lupus)

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Historically, most Native Americans revered gray wolves, trying to emulate their cunning and hunting abilities. However, wolves became nearly extinct in the lower 48 states in the early part of the 20th century because settlers believed wolves caused widespread livestock losses. Constantly persecuted and targeted by large scale predator eradication programs sponsored by the federal government, wolves have been pursued with more passion and determination than any other animal in U.S. history. By the time wolves were finally protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, they had been exterminated from the lower 48 states, except for a few hundred …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Recovery plans identify reasonable actions which are believed to be required to recover and/or protect endangered species. Plans are prepared by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and sometimes with the assistance of recovery teams, contractors, State agencies, and others. This plan was prepared by Randall R. Reeves, Phillip J. Clapham, Robert L. Brownell, Jr., and Gregory K. Silber for NMFS. Recovery plans do not necessarily represent the views nor the official positions or approvals of any individuals or agencies, other than those of NMFS, and they represent the views of NMFS …

Seasonal Variation In Reception Of Fin Whale Calls At Five Geographic Areas In The North Pacific Jul 1998

Seasonal Variation In Reception Of Fin Whale Calls At Five Geographic Areas In The North Pacific

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

In late August 1991 scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML) and Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) began a pilot study to investigate the capability of hydrophones from the US. Navy’s fixed array system to detect large whales in the North Pacific by passive reception of their calls. PMEL had previously established a direct data link from five bottom-mounted arrays of the Navy SOSUS (Sound Surveillance System), via the Naval Oceanographic Processing Facility (NOPF) at Whidbey Island, Washington, to study low-level seafloor seismicity (Fox et al. 1994). PMEL subsequently provided NMML tapes of …

Magnetoelectric Néel Anisotropies, Ralph Skomski Jul 1998

Magnetoelectric Néel Anisotropies, Ralph Skomski

Ralph Skomski Publications

The applicability of Néel's pair model to metallic 3d surfaces and interfaces is explained in terms of the tight-binding moments theorem. The Néel model reproduces itinerant magnetism so long as the band structure is approximated by third-moment atomic-pair contributions. This establishes an atomic Néel description of interfaces and impurities. The Néel parameter g depends on the d-band filling and, to some extent, on the atomic structure.

Experimental Observation Of Correlated Magnetic Reconnection And Alfvénic Ion Jets, Thomas W. Kornack , '98, Peter K. Sollins , '98, Michael R. Brown

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Correlations between magnetic reconnection and energetic ion flow events have been measured with merging force free spheromaks at the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment. The reconnection layer is measured with a linear probe array and ion flow is directly measured with a retarding grid energy analyzer. Flow has been measured both in the plane of the reconnection layer and out of the plane. The most energetic events occur in the reconnection plane immediately after formation as the spheromaks dynamically merge. The outflow velocity is nearly Alfvenic. As the spheromaks form equilibria and decay, the flow is substantially reduced.

Fuzzy Logic Applied To System Control To Enhance Commercial Appliance Performance, Glenn Moffett Jul 1998

Fuzzy Logic Applied To System Control To Enhance Commercial Appliance Performance, Glenn Moffett

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to determine the usefulness of fuzzy logic and fuzzy control when applied to a commercial appliance. Fuzzy logic is a structured, model-free estimator that approximates a function through linguistic input/output associations. Fuzzy rule-based systems apply these methods to solve many types of "real-world" problems, especially where a system is difficult to model, is controlled by a human operator or expert, or where ambiguity or vagueness is common.

This dissertation presents fuzzy sets, fuzzy systems, and fuzzy control, with an example conveying the use of fuzzy control of a consumer product and an overview of …

Evolution Of Mixed-State Regions In Type-Ii Superconductors, Chaocheng Huang, Tom Svobodny Jul 1998

Evolution Of Mixed-State Regions In Type-Ii Superconductors, Chaocheng Huang, Tom Svobodny

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A mean-field model for dynamics of superconducting vortices is studied. The model, consisting of an elliptic equation coupled with a hyperbolic equation with discontinuous initial data, is formulated as a system of nonlocal integrodifferential equations. We show that there exists a unique classical solution in C1+α(Ω0) for all t > Ω, where Ω0 is the initial vortex region that is assumed to be in C1+α. Consequently, for any time t, the vortex region Ωt is of C1+α, and the vorticity is in Cα(Ωt).
