The theoretical analysis of the position of principal diachronic directions at magnetization rotation in (100) and (110) planes for the case of growing dichroism axes in random directions was made. The calculations of angular dependencies of dichroic axes (DA) position for different values of the magneto-optical anisotropy parameter, a, have been done. The relations between the growing and magneto-optical dichroism, K/M, and the angle \delta characterizing the direction of principal growing dichroism axes were given. The paper presents the analytical matrix elements of the kinetic hamiltonian in the oscillator base. The Pad'{e} approximations for the potential part (Saxon - Woods and alike) was used. From residue calculus the potential matrix elements are analytical. Many parts of these expressions can be computed once for ever. In this way the evaluation time can be reduced and the relations obtained are well suited for parallel computation.

Hardened surfaces were produced on AISI 1008 steel through a laser surface alloying (LSA) technique. Mixture of pure Boron, Silicon, and Carbon powders of the same grain size were deposited on the substrate. The surface was then melted using pulsed Nd:YAG laser (\tau = 10 ms) at an energy of 12 J. The influence of alloying elements on the microstructure and hardness of treated layer was investigated. Dependending on the alloying elements species, different maximum surface hardness, different maximum depth, and different hardness profile could be obtained. The IR studies have been made in the K_2O-B_2O_3-V_2O_5-Fe_2O_3 glass system. The increase in intensity and shifting of vibrational bands towards lower wave number at 1400-1350 cm^{-1}, 1200 cm^{-1} and 100-940 cm^{-1} in IR spectra have been ascribed to the formation of BO_3 to BO_4 and VO_5 to VO_4 tetrahedra along with the formation of non-bridging oxygens attached to boron and vanadium. In heat-treated glass samples, many new vibrational bands have been observed which were however, absent in the untreated samples. The preservation of the 1020 cm^{-1} band assigned to V=O bond suggests that K_2O shows the preference for borate …

Domain Structures Of Epitaxial Perovskite Ferroelectric Films: Part Ii. Applications, S. Pamir Alpay, Alexander L. Roytburd

The use of domain stability maps for epitaxial perovskite ferroelectric films is illustrated with some examples. The equilibrium domain structure and domain fractions as a function of temperature are predicted for PbTiO_3(001) films grown epitaxially on three different substrates: MgO(001), KTaO_3(001), and SrTiO_3(001). Misfit dislocation formation at the growth temperature is found to have a profound effect on both the domain selection and relative domain populations. Theoretical predictions are compared with available experimental data.

Compositional Dependence Of Properties Of Rf-Sputtered Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O Thin Films, Ayhan Güldeste

Compositional dependence of superconducting transition temperature (T_c) of Bi_2Sr_{3-x}Ca_xCu_2O_{8+x} thin films grown by rf sputtering on single crystal MgO substrates has been investigated. Films have been assessed by considering their initial composition in terms of (Ca+Sr)/Bi ratio with their atomic concentration normalized to Cu:2. It was found that T_{c-zero} of around 80K is achievable for (Ca+Sr)/Bi ratio between 1.4 and 1.65, while T_{c-onset} remains above 90K. Quenching from high temperature increased T_{c-zero,} but it may result in a deterioration in resistivity due to micro cracks induced by the thermal stress.

This study gives a mean field model with two order parameters for three-phase coexistence near the multicritical point. The critical exponents calculated from our model are the tricritical exponents for the order parameters, susceptibility and the specific heat. Hence, our mean field model describes adequately the tricritical behaviour of a system in the region of three-phase coexistence.

The energy loss rate for pair annihilation is calculated numerically in V-A (Fermi theory) and Weinberg-Salam (Standard theory) theories, taking into account also the variation of density at various temperatures using the results obtained in closed form by Chiu, and Schinder, et al. The calculations made by Chiu, and Salpeter, et al., are seen to be parallel to each other. Dicus has calculated energy loss rate for this process only for a few limiting cases since the integrals can not be taken analytically for all \lambda and \nu. The effect of the spatially dependent screening on the ionization energy of a shallow donor in a 1D quantum well wire made of Ga_{1-x}Al_x/GaAs superlattice is presented. A variational approach is used to obtain ionization energy of the on-centre impurity at the origin of the well and the results obtained are compared with the existing values.

Measurements of the ^{19}F NMR linewidth \Delta \nu and spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 have been performed in an oriented powder sample of fluorinated YBa_2Cu_4O_8 at temperatures 4 < T < 300 K and static magnetic fields 0.3 < H_0 < 9.4 T for Hollc. Thermal motion of flux lines was evidenced from the effect on NMR linewidth while 1/T_1 showed the effects due to interaction with Fermi liquid.

Metastability is a common phenomenon. Many evolutionary processes, both natural and artificial, alternate between periods of stasis and brief periods of rapid change in their behavior. In this paper an analytical model for the dynamics of a mutation-only genetic algorithm (GA) is introduced that identifies a new and general mechanism causing metastability in evolutionary dynamics. The GA’s population dynamics is described in terms of flows in the space of fitness distributions. The trajectories through fitness distribution space are derived in closed form in the limit of infinite populations. We then show how finite populations induce metastability, even in regions where …

This paper presents a systematic solution to the persistent problem of buffer overflow attacks. Buffer overflow attacks gained notoriety in 1988 as part of the Morris Worm incident on the Internet. While it is fairly simple to fix individual buffer overflow vulnerabilities, buffer overflow attacks continue to this day. Hundreds of attacks have been discovered, and while most of the obvious vulnerabilities have now been patched, more sophisticated buffer overflow attacks continue to emerge.

We describe StackGuard: a simple compiler technique that virtually eliminates buffer overflow vulnerabilities with only modest performance penalties. Privileged programs that are recompiled with the StackGuard …

Inter-Library Loan (ILL) service is one of the services provided by libraries that offers users a way to access library resources beyond their affiliated libraries. Additionally, it allows participating libraries to share and maximize their resources. This work examines the ILL process used by libraries in Singapore and proposes that the existing paper-based manual system be replaced by a Web-based ILL system. Such a Web-based system has been successfully designed and implemented at the Nanyang Technological University. The paper presents an overview of the system requirements and architecture, implementation details and demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of the new system.

An analytical scheme for the determination of marine DOI has been established. The concentration of DOI is estimated as total iodine (TI) minus total inorganic iodine (TII). The concentration of total iodine is determined as [special characters omitted] after DOI has been oxidized to inorganic iodine quantitatively by intensive UV-irradiation and all the inorganic iodine in the samples had been converted to [special characters omitted] by the addition of NaClO.

Talc occurs as massive, economic deposits in upper amphibolite facies marbles of Archean age in southwestern Montana. Previous workers have demonstrated that the talc is a replacement of the marble that resulted from interaction with a large volume of fluid. δ18O (SMOW) values for dolomite and calcite range from 20-25‰ for the unaltered Archean marbles to as little as 8-10‰ in the talc deposits, suggesting that the metasomatic fluids had low δ18O values. In contrast, δ13C values for calcite and dolomite are similar for all samples (-2 to +2‰ PDB). Therefore, it is likely that the metasomatic fluids were oxygen-rich …

The small rural mountain town of Alberton, MT located 32 miles west of Missoula, MT was the 1996 site of the largest contamination event in railroad history involving a mixture of chemicals. On April 11, 1996 a Montana Rail Link train derailed just west of the town of Alberton, leaking 130,000 pounds of chlorine gas, 17,000 of potassium cresylate (spent oil refinery waste), and 85 dry bulk pounds of sodium chlorate into the Alberton environment. Approximately 1000 people were evacuated from their homes, many for the seventeen day evacuation period that followed. The video documentary project that I embarked on …

A theoretical and experimental study of thermosensitive resins used in thermal stereolithography is presented. The process of local curing through the application of infrared radiation, which has proved to be useful in a new technique for the making of prototypes by means of selective heating with C02 laser (10.6um), is studied. The ideal composition of the thermosensitive resins has proved to be 10 parts epoxy, 1.4 part diethylene triamine (the curing agent) and 0.7 part silica powder. A bound on the tau neutrino mass is established using the data collected from 1991 to 1995 at s√≃mZ with the ALEPH detector. Two separate limits are derived by fitting the distribution of visible energy vs invariant mass in τ−→2π−π+ντ and τ−→3π−2π+(π0)ντ decays. The two results are combined to obtain a 95% confidence level upper limit of 18.2 MeV/c2 on the mass of the tau neutrino.

A search for doubly-charmed B decays with both charmed mesons reconstructed is performed, using about 3.8 million hadronic Z decays recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP. A clear signal is observed in the channels B→DsD¯(X)B→DsD¯(X) and B→DD¯(X)B→DD¯(X) (where D can be either a D00, a D++ or a D∗+∗+), providing the first direct evidence for doubly-charmed B decays involving no DsDs production. Evidence for associated K0SKS0 and K±K± production in the decays B→DD¯(X)B→DD¯(X) is also presented and some candidates for completely reconstructed decays B→DsD¯(nπ)B→DsD¯(nπ), B→DD¯K0SB→DD¯KS0 and B→DD¯K±B→DD¯K± are observed.
