Hierarchical Search Strategy For The Detection Of Gravitational Waves From Coalescing Binaries: Extension To Post-Newtonian Waveforms, Soumya Mohanty
Hierarchical Search Strategy For The Detection Of Gravitational Waves From Coalescing Binaries: Extension To Post-Newtonian Waveforms, Soumya Mohanty
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
The detection of gravitational waves from coalescing compact binaries would be a computationally intensive process if a single bank of template wave forms (one step search) is used. In an earlier paper we presented a detection strategy, called a two step search, that utilizes a hierarchy of template banks. It was shown that in the simple case of a family of Newtonian signals, an on-line two step search was ≃8 times faster than an on-line one step search (for the initial LIGO). In this paper we extend the two step search to the more realistic case of …
A Bayesian Meta-Analysis Using The Gibbs Sampler, Shannon Marie Fair
A Bayesian Meta-Analysis Using The Gibbs Sampler, Shannon Marie Fair
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A meta-analysis is the combination of results from several similar studies, conducted by different scientists, in order to arrive at a single, overall conclusion. Unlike common experimental procedures, the data used in a meta-analysis happen to be the descriptive statistics from the distinct individual studies.
In this thesis, we will consider two regression studies performed by two scientists. These studies have one common dependent variable, Y, and one or more independent common variables, X. A regression of Y on X with other independent variables is carried out on both studies. We will estimate the regression coefficients of X …

An Interlibrary Loan System On The World Wide Web, Schubert Shou Boon Foo, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Inter-Library Loan (ILL) service is one of the services provided by libraries that offers users a way to access library resources beyond their affiliated libraries. Additionally, it allows participating libraries to share and maximize their resources. This work examines the ILL process used by libraries in Singapore and proposes that the existing paper-based manual system be replaced by a Web-based ILL system. Such a Web-based system has been successfully designed and implemented at the Nanyang Technological University. The paper presents an overview of the system requirements and architecture, implementation details and demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of the new system.
Observation Of Doubly-Charmed B Decays At Lep, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Observation Of Doubly-Charmed B Decays At Lep, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A search for doubly-charmed B decays with both charmed mesons reconstructed is performed, using about 3.8 million hadronic Z decays recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP. A clear signal is observed in the channels B→DsD¯(X)B→DsD¯(X) and B→DD¯(X)B→DD¯(X) (where D can be either a D00, a D++ or a D∗+∗+), providing the first direct evidence for doubly-charmed B decays involving no DsDs production. Evidence for associated K0SKS0 and K±K± production in the decays B→DD¯(X)B→DD¯(X) is also presented and some candidates for completely reconstructed decays B→DsD¯(nπ)B→DsD¯(nπ), B→DD¯K0SB→DD¯KS0 and B→DD¯K±B→DD¯K± are observed. Furthermore, candidates for the two-body Cabibbo suppressed decays B0→D∗−D∗+B0→D∗−D∗+ and …
Measurement Of The Axial-Vector Τ Spectral Functions And Determination Of Αs (M2Τ) From Hadronic Τ Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Measurement Of The Axial-Vector Τ Spectral Functions And Determination Of Αs (M2Τ) From Hadronic Τ Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
An analysis based on 124 000 selected ττ pairs recorded by the ALEPH detector at LEP provides the vector (V)(V) and axial-vector (A)(A) spectral functions of hadronic ττ decays together with their total widths. This allows the evaluation of finite energy chiral sum rules that are weighted integrals over the (V−A)(V−A) spectral functions. In addition, a precise measurement of αsαs along with a determination of nonperturbative contributions at the ττ mass scale is performed. The experimentally and theoretically most robust determination of αs(M2τ)αs(Mτ2) is obtained from the (V+A)(V+A) fit that yields αs(M2τ)=0.334±0.022αs(Mτ2)=0.334±0.022 giving αs(M2Z)=0.1202±0.0027αs(MZ2)=0.1202±0.0027 after the extrapolation to the mass …

Study Of B0s Oscillations And Lifetime Using Fully Reconstructed D̄S Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A search for B0sBs0 oscillations is performed using approximately 4 million Z→qq¯Z→qq¯ events collected by the ALEPH experiment during 1991–1995. B0sBs0 candidates are partially reconstructed by combining tracks with fully reconstructed D−sDs− candidates. The B0sBs0 production flavour is estimated from the sign of the opposite hemisphere charge, a fragmentation kaon in the same hemisphere, or a lepton in the opposite hemisphere. From a total sample of 1620 candidates, with a B0sBs0 purity estimated to be 22%, all values of ΔmsΔms below 3.9 ps−1−1 and between 6.5 and 8.8 ps−1−1 are excluded at 95% CL. From the same sample, the B0sBs0 …

We have extended two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy to the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region, to accurately measure the He 11S-21S transition at 120 nm. Our result is 4984872315(48) MHz. This yields a ground state Lamb shift of 41104(48) MHz, in fair agreement with theory and other experiments. This approach has the potential for significantly better accuracy once improvements in the laser and the wavelength metrology are implemented.
Object-Oriented Programming And Parallelism, Atanas Radenski
Object-Oriented Programming And Parallelism, Atanas Radenski
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Initially, object-orientation and parallelism originated and developed as separate and relatively independent areas. During the last decade, however, more and more researchers were attracted by the benefits from a potential marriage of the two powerful paradigms. Numerous research projects and an increasing number of practical applications were aimed at different forms of amalgamation of parallelism with object-orientation. It has been realized that parallelism is a inherently needed enhancement for the traditional object-oriented programming (OOP) paradigm, and that object orientation can add significant flexibility to the parallel programming paradigm.

On The Differential Prime Radical Of A Differential Ring, Djavvat Khadjiev, Fethi̇ Çallialp
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper we have obtained the following results for a differential ring (associative or nonassociative): (1) For a differential ring ({\cal D}-ring) we introduce definitions of a {\cal D}-prime {\cal D}-ideal, {\cal D}-semiprime {\cal D}-ideal and a strongly {\cal D}-nilpotent element. We define the {\cal D}-prime radical as the intersection of all {\cal D}-prime {\cal D}-ideals. For any {\cal D}-ring the {\cal D}-prime radical, the intersection of all {\cal D}-semiprime {\cal D}-semiprime {\cal D}-ideals and the set of all strongly {\cal D}-nilpotent elements are equal. (2) For a {\cal D}-ring we introduce a definition of an s-nilpotent {\cal D}-ideal. …

Normal Subgroups Of Hecke Groups On Sphere And, İsmai̇l Naci̇ Cangül, Osman Bi̇zi̇m
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
We use regular map theory to obtain all normal subgroups of Hecke groups of genus 0 and 1. The existence of a regular map corresponding uniquely to every normal subgroup of Hecke groups H(\lambda_q) is a result of Jones and Singerman, and it is frequently used here to obtain normal subgroups. It is found that when q is even, H(\lambda_q) has infinitely many normal subgroups on the sphere, while for odd q, this number is finite. The total number of normal subgroups of H(\lambda_q) on a torus is found to be either 0 or infinite. The latter case appears iff …

On The Cohomology Ring Of The Infinite Flag Manifold Lg/D, Cenap Özel
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this work, we discuss the calculation of cohomology rings of LG / T. First we describe the root system and Weyl group of LG, then we give some homotopy equivalences on the loop groups and homogeneous spaces, and investigate the cohomology ring structures of LSU_2 /T and \Omega SU_2. Also we prove that BGG-type operators correspond to partial derivation operators on the divided power algebras.

Derivation Of Separable Amplitude Equations By Multiple Scales Method, Mehmet Naci̇ Özer, Dursun Eser
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
The method of multiple scales is used to derive separable nonlinear Schrödinger equations as amplitude equation from three component 2D nonlinear Klein-Gordon Equation. We further discuss the integrability of the derived separable amplitude equations and reduce them into finite dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Finally we give first integrals for the reduced systems.

Direct Sums And The Schur Property, Betül Tanbay
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
It is a known fact that $\ell^1$, the dual space of the null sequences $c_0$, has the Schur property, that is, weakly convergent sequences in $\ell^1$ are norm convergent. In this paper, we prove that if $(X_{\alpha})_{\alpha\in I}$ are Banach spaces and $X=(\oplus_{\alpha\in I}X_{\alpha})_1$ their $l_1$-sum, then the space $X$ has the Schur property iff each factor $X_{\alpha}$ has it.

A Java Implementation Of A Portable Desktop Manager, Scott J. Griswold
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Computers equipped with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and connected to the Internet are common in both the business and educational communities. These computers, using a web browser, easily share programs written in the Java programming language that are able to execute on a variety of heterogeneous machines.
While programs written in many languages will not execute unmodified on different computing platforms because of portability restrictions, Java has overcome these limitations and provides a platform independent language. However, every programming language is limited, and no language provides all the features required for every program. Therefore, creation of any portable program …

Volcanic Caves Of East Africa - An Overview, Jim W. Simons
International Journal of Speleology
Numerous Tertiary to recent volcanoes are located in East Africa. Thus, much of the region is made up volcanic rock, which hosts the largest and greatest variety of East Africas caves. Exploration of volcanic caves has preoccupied members of Cave Exploration Group of East Africa (CEGEA) for the past 30 years. The various publications edited by CEGEA are in this respect a treasure troves of speleological information. In the present paper an overview on the most important volcanic caves and areas are shortly reported.
Guano Mining In Kenyan Lava Tunnel Caves, Jim W. Simons
Guano Mining In Kenyan Lava Tunnel Caves, Jim W. Simons
International Journal of Speleology
Commercial mining of bat guano for agricultural fertilizer only became possible in Kenya through discovery of major deposits in the lava tunnel caves of Mt. Suswa and the North Chyulu Hills in the early 1960’s. This paper provides historical information leading up to the guano mining, describes the cave deposits, outlines the mining under-takings, and provides information on the guano producing bats and insect faunas. The results of guano analyses, details of the tonnages extracted and sold to recipients between 1966 to 1984, and some benefits which resulted from its use on crops are given. A brief outline of attempts …

"Hades" - A Remarkable Cave On Oldoinyo Lengai In The East African Rift Valley, Gordon J. Davies
International Journal of Speleology
Oldoinyo Lengai is the world’s only active carbonatite volcano, situated in northern Tanzania within the Eastern Rift Valley, al 2.751 degrees S, 35.902 degrees E. It forms an isolated symmetrical cone at the southern end of Lake Natron, with a summit elevation of 2,890 m (9,480 ft). Periodic eruptions of ash and lava have been recorded since about 1880, and with increasing precision during this century since 1904. In 1990 a routine expedition to monitor activity levels at the summit led to the discovery of a remarkable cave located in the crater floor, filled with numerous long delicate pale yellow …

Sheet Flow Caves Of Kilauea Caldera, Hawaii County, Hawaii, William R. Halliday
International Journal of Speleology
Terminal lobes of sheet flows of pahoehoe lava sometimes form three-dimensional nests, initially separated by partitions consisting of accreted "skins” of each lobe. Melting breaks down these partitions, forming a uniform flow unit. In Kilauea Caldera we have found and mapped sizable drained cavities in low-slope sheet flows. Their general pattern includes three-dimensional nests, with partially melted septa evident in some examples. Christmas Cave is the most extensive found to date, with 632 meters surveyed on two levels. It is located at the lower end of an inflated sheet flow tongue which underwent local deflation as a result of drainage …
