Uniformly Adaptive Estimation For Models With Arma Errors, Douglas Steigerwald Dec 1996

Uniformly Adaptive Estimation For Models With Arma Errors, Douglas Steigerwald

Douglas G. Steigerwald

A semiparametric estimator based on an unknown density is uniformly adaptive if the expected loss of the estimator converges to the asymptotic expected loss of the maximum likelihood estimator based on the true density (MLE), and if convergence does not depend on either the parameter values or the form of the unknown density. Without uniform adaptivity, the asymptotic expected loss of the MLE need not approximate the expected loss of a semiparamteric estimator for any finite sample. I show that a two-step semiparametric estimator is uniformly adaptive for the parameters of nonlinear regression models with autoregressive moving average errors.

Biodiversity Monitoring: The Missing Ingredient, Kamaljit Bawa, Shaily Menon Dec 1996

Biodiversity Monitoring: The Missing Ingredient, Kamaljit Bawa, Shaily Menon

Shaily Menon

With mounting losses in biological diversity, inventorying and monitoring of biodiversity to assess the magnitude and rate of losses are emerging as dominant themes in conservation biology. Inventorying has been defined as the surveying, sorting, cataloging, quantifying and mapping of entities ranging from genes to landscapes1 and monitoring has been defined as the surveillance of the compliance with or deviation from a predetermined standard2. Renner and Ricklefs3 argued that rushed inventories will compromise scientific rigor and have little influence on decision making. More recently, Stork et al.4 argued that losses in biological diversity are so severe that inventorying and monitoring …

Constructing Essential Laminations In 2-Bridge Knot Surgered 3-Manifolds, Ramin Naimi Dec 1996

Constructing Essential Laminations In 2-Bridge Knot Surgered 3-Manifolds, Ramin Naimi

Ramin Naimi

A nontrivial knot that can be drawn with only two relative maxima in the vertical direction is called a 2-bridge knot, and one that can be drawn on a torus is called a torus knot. Loosely speaking, a lamination in a manifold M is a foliation of M, except that it can have a nonempty open complement in M, and very loosely speaking, the lamination is essential if each leaf of it L is incompressible, i.e. inclusion of L into M induces an injective homomorphism from π1(L) into π1(M). Our main result is: Theorem 2. Every 3-manifold obtained by surgery …

Is There Environmental Racism? The Demographics Of Hazardous Waste In Los Angeles County, J. Boer, Manuel Pastor, James Sadd, Lori Snyder Dec 1996

Is There Environmental Racism? The Demographics Of Hazardous Waste In Los Angeles County, J. Boer, Manuel Pastor, James Sadd, Lori Snyder

James Sadd

The article assesses the location of treatment, storage and disposal facilities (TSDF) in Los Angeles County, California, with focus on racism. The study shows that a simple comparison of tracts with and without TSDF reveals statistically significant differences by race and economic status along the lines suggested by the environmental justice proponents. There are also significant differences by industrial land use and manufacturing employment along the lines suggested by critics of the environmental justice concept. In this multivariate model race, along with industrial land use and employment in manufacturing, remains a factor, rising income that has a positive then a …

Direct Measurement Of Diffuse Double-Layer Forces At The Semiconductor/Electrolyte Interface Using An Atomic Force Microscope, Kai Hu, Fu-Ren F. Fan, Allen J. Bard, Andrew C. Hillier Dec 1996

Direct Measurement Of Diffuse Double-Layer Forces At The Semiconductor/Electrolyte Interface Using An Atomic Force Microscope, Kai Hu, Fu-Ren F. Fan, Allen J. Bard, Andrew C. Hillier

Andrew C. Hillier

The forces between a silica probe and an n-type TiO2 single-crystal electrode were measured using an atomic force microscope in an aqueous electrolyte solution. These interactions were a strong function of the solution pH, the presence of specifically adsorbed anions, and the TiO2 electrode potential. For a series of pH values, a strong electrostatic repulsion was seen at high pH and decreased as the pH was reduced. At pH values below 5.5, the interaction became attractive. A series of force measurements between SiO2 and n-type TiO2 showed a repulsive interaction when TiO2 was held at negative electrode potentials, which transformed …

Econometric Estimation Of Foresight: Tax Policy And Investment In The U.S., Douglas G. Steigerwald, Charles Stuart Dec 1996

Econometric Estimation Of Foresight: Tax Policy And Investment In The U.S., Douglas G. Steigerwald, Charles Stuart

Douglas G. Steigerwald

We develop a method for measuring the foresight agents have. We first dichotomize an agent's information at current date t into knowledge up to date t+f and expectations after t+f. We then form a residual-based test statistic that allows us to compare prediction errors for econometric models based on different values of f. We illustrate the method, examining investment around tax reforms to measure the foresight firms have about tax policy. In this illustration, current investment appears to reflect currently available information but little foresight other than foresight of enacted policy changes.

Asymptotic Bias For Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Estimators In Models With Conditional Heteroskedasticity, Douglas G. Steigerwald, Whitney Newey Dec 1996

Asymptotic Bias For Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Estimators In Models With Conditional Heteroskedasticity, Douglas G. Steigerwald, Whitney Newey

Douglas G. Steigerwald

Virtually all applications of time-varying conditional variance models use a quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE). Consistency of a QMLE requires an identification condition that the quasi-log-likelihood have a unique maximum at the true conditional mean and relative scale parameters. We show that the identification condition holds for a non-Gaussian QMLE if the conditional mean is identically zero or if a symmetry condition is satisfied. Without symmetry an additional parameter, for the location of the innovation density, must be added for consistency. We calculate the efficiency loss from adding such a parameter under symmetry, when the parameter is not needed. We also …

An Analysis Of Surface Area Estimates Of Binary Volumes Under Three Tilings, Erik G. Learned-Miller Dec 1996

An Analysis Of Surface Area Estimates Of Binary Volumes Under Three Tilings, Erik G. Learned-Miller

Erik G Learned-Miller

In this paper, we first review local counting methods for perimeter estimation of piecewise smooth binary figures on square, hexagonal, and triangular grids. We verify that better perimeter estimates, using local counting algorithms, can be obtained using hexagonal or triangular grids. We then compare surface area estimates using local counting techniques for binary three-dimensional volumes under the three semi-regular polyhedral tilings: the cubic, truncated octahedral, and rhombic dodecahedral tilings. It is shown that for surfaces of random orientation with a uniform distribution, the expected error of surface area estimates is smaller for the truncated octahedral and rhombic dodecahedral tilings than …

Mathematical Instantons With Maximal Order Jumping Lines, Prabhakar Rao Dec 1996

Mathematical Instantons With Maximal Order Jumping Lines, Prabhakar Rao

Prabhakar Rao

A mathematical instanton bundle on P3 (over an algebraically closed field) is a rank two vector bundle ℰ on P3 with c1 = 0 and with H0() = H1((2)) = 0. Let c2() = n. Then n > 0. A jumping line of ℰ of order a, (a > 0), is a line ℓ in P3 on which splits as 𝒪(a) ⊕𝒪(a). It is easy to see that the jumping lines of ℰ all have order ≤ n. We will say that ℰ has a maximal order jumping line if it …
