The analysis of high-resolution watergun seismic profiles collected in support of DSDP Leg 85 drilling reveals sev eral major, regionally traceable reflectors that can be correlated over more than 360,000 km2 in the central equatorial Pacific. Synthetic seismograms generated from shipboard physical property measurements (carefully corrected to in situ values) for DSDP Site 574 show excellent agreement with the field records; the agreement suggests that the traveltime to-depth conversion is accurate and permits the precise (± 5 m) location of reflectors in the cored section. The reflectors can be dated (±0.5 Ma) as follows: Orange, 21.5 to 22.5 Ma; Yellow, …

Electron Production In Proton Collisions: Total Cross Sections, M. Eugene Rudd, Y-K. Kim, D. H. Madison, J. W. Gallagher
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
Existing data on the ionization of neutral atoms and molecules by proton impact are reviewed, and electron production cross-section data are collected. The three major experimental methods are discussed and possible sources of error identified. Some theoretical cross sections are discussed, and well-established methods of relating them to measured cross sections are reviewed. A mathematical equation is fitted to the weighted experimental data for each target, and these fits are adjusted to be consistent with appropriate theoretical calculations and with electron impact and photoionization data. Recommended values of total cross sections for proton-impact ionization are given.
Lineament Analysis And Tectonic Interpretation For The Central Tharsis Region, Mars, Robert C. Anderson
Lineament Analysis And Tectonic Interpretation For The Central Tharsis Region, Mars, Robert C. Anderson
OES Theses and Dissertations
Lineament studies conducted for the Central Tharsis Region of Mars (JOON and JOOS latitude; 450w to 157.50W longitude) indicate two major events controlled the formation of the Tharsis Dome: 1) a pre-Tharsis fracture system consisting of North-West (3150) trending fractures; and 2) a Tharsian fracture system containing North-South (355°) and East-West (275°) trending fractures. The North-West (3150) trending fractures represent a crustal weakness zone which controlled the early formation of the Tharsis Dome. Analytical studies suggest four centers of uplift: 1) 6°N, 124°W; 2) 0.5°N, 114°W; 3) 5°S, 105°W; and 4) 7°S, 104°W. Each of these uplifting centers is associated …
The Temporary Capture Of Light By A Dielectric Film, James A. Lock
The Temporary Capture Of Light By A Dielectric Film, James A. Lock
Physics Faculty Publications
When a wave packet of light passes through a dielectric film it is found that at a transmission maximum, the group velocity of the light wave packet within the film attains its minimum value. Similarly, at a transmission minimum, it is found that the group velocity of the light wave packet within the film attains its maximum value. The measurability of this effect is also discussed.

Leachate Monitoring In Naturally Saline Groundwater Chesapeake Landfill Chesapeake Virginia, T. Britt Mcmillan
Leachate Monitoring In Naturally Saline Groundwater Chesapeake Landfill Chesapeake Virginia, T. Britt Mcmillan
OES Theses and Dissertations
Groundwater chemistry around the Chesapeake municipal landfill was monitored over a one year period. Ten sample sites as well as two surface water sites were used to monitor water quality. Two wells, one at 3 m and the other at 10 m were located at each site. Surface water samples were taken from the Elizabeth River, north of the landfill, and a tidal channel, west of the landfill. Seven groundwater sites were downgradient of the landfill and three sites were upgradient (control sites).
The landfill overlies a tidal marsh, approximately 100 m south of the intracoastal waterway (Elizabeth River). Dredge …

Depositional Environments Of Late Precambrian Sediments From Liberia, Sierra Leone, And Senegal, West Africa, Alfred W. Magee Iii
OES Theses and Dissertations
Field and hand sample descriptions were supplemented with petrographic and textural analyses derived from thin sections, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine environments of deposition for the late Precambrian Gibi Mountain Formation, Liberia, Tabe
Formation, Sierra Leone, and the basal Mali Group, Senegal, West Africa.
The Gibi Mountain Formation consists of a glaciomarine tillite, marine laminites with dropgrains, and shallow water arkoses. A shale facies remains unresolved in origin.
The Tabe Formation is composed of three members: Tibai, Dodo, and Taban. The Tibai Member contains a glaciomarine tillite deposited in a shallow shelf marine environment, marine laminites, and shallow …
Comparison Of An Improved Plankton Sampler To The Standard Conical Plankton Net, Ronald S. Schmidt
Comparison Of An Improved Plankton Sampler To The Standard Conical Plankton Net, Ronald S. Schmidt
OES Theses and Dissertations
A comparison of field and tank tests between the standard conical plankton net and an improved version of a plankton sampler is presented. The improved sampler was shown to filter larger quantities of water than the standard net without having the filtration efficiency reduced below 85%. The improved sampler was also shown to capture an increased number of plankton per volume sampled, as a result of eliminating increased avoidance activity by zooplankton. It was not shown that. the improved sampler capture either larger maximum sizes of zooplankton or additional species.

Conodont Biostratigraphy Of The Cambrian-Ordovician Boundary Interval In The Northern Shenandoah Valley Of Virginia, U.S.A., Randall C. Orndorff
OES Theses and Dissertations
Conodonts collected from two measured sections in the northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia indicate that locally the Cambrian-Ordovician boundary is within the upper part of the Conococheague Formation and that the Conococheague-Stonehenge formational contact as defined in this study, is diachronous in relation to the boundary. Using the generally accepted definition of the CambrianOrdovician boundary as at the base of the trilobite Missisguoia Zone or within the conodont Hirsutodontus hirsutus Subzone of the Cordylodus proavus Zone, it is found here that the boundary is 230 ft (70 m) below the formational contact at the Narrow Passage Creek section. Several North …

Depositional Model For The Auriferous Gravels In The Payan Mining District Department Of Narino, Columbia, South America, Jim R. Garrett
OES Theses and Dissertations
Unlike placer deposits in arid and semi-arid environments where gold concentration is closely tied to the position of the bedrock, Payan placer deposits have no association with bedrock. Gold concentration values show highest gold concentrations occur at the contact of a coarse sand unit and its underlying gravel unit. Comparisons of the size and shape distributions of gold grain populations with their associated black sand populations indicate the gold and black sand were not deposited in hydraulic equilibrium. The mean size of each gold population is consistently coarser than the mean size of its associated black sand population despite the …
Randomized Routing On Fat-Trees, Ronald I. Greenberg
Randomized Routing On Fat-Trees, Ronald I. Greenberg
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Fat-trees are a class of routing networks for hardware-efficient parallel computation. This paper presents a randomized algorithm for routing messages on a fat-tree. The quality of the algorithm is measured in terms of the load factor of a set of messages to be routed, which is a lower bound on the time required to deliver the messages. We show that if a set of messages has load factor lambda on a fat-tree with n processors, the number of delivery cycles (routing attempts) that the algorithm requires is O(lambda+lgnlglgn) with probability 1-O(1/ …

Investigation Of The Appropriateness Of Sensitized Luminescence To Determine Exciton Motion Parameters In Pure Molecular Crystals, Vasudev M. Kenkre, Paul Ernest Parris, Dankward B. Schmid
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A wealth of experimental data has been collected over the years regarding the sensitized luminescence of molecular crystals. Indeed, such observations have played a primary role in attempts to characterize the dynamical aspects of exciton transport in these materials. Nonetheless, as has been noted previously, serious questions of interpretation remain concerning the relationship between primary experimental observables and microscopic parameters which govern exciton transport and capture. In the past these questions have led to an uncertainty, not always acknowledged, in the values of exciton diffusion constants reported in the literature. On the other hand, careful analysis of some recent experiments …

The amplitude of h/e periodic oscillations in the magnetoresistance of very small normal-metal (Au) rings, as well as the harmonic h/2e, have been studied as a function of temperature. The amplitudes depend on the temperature T roughly as T-1/2, as expected from the averaging of conduction channels in the absence of inelastic scattering, but may not be entirely consistent with this model. At the lowest T, the size of the fluctuations in the conductance is about ΔG∼e2/h, as predicted recently.
Reproducing Kernel Krein Spaces Of Analytic Functions And Inverse Scattering, Daniel Alpay
Reproducing Kernel Krein Spaces Of Analytic Functions And Inverse Scattering, Daniel Alpay
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The purpose of this thesis is to study certain reproducing kernel Krein spaces of analytic functions, the relationships between these spaces and an inverse scattering problem associated with matrix valued functions of bounded type, and an operator model.
Roughly speaking, these results correspond to a generalization of earlier investigations on the applications of de Branges' theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions to the inverse scattering problem for a matrix valued function of the Schur class.
The present work considers first a generalization of a portion of de Branges' theory to Krein spaces. We then formulate a general …

Microbial Characteristics Of An Industrial Mixed Liquor After Exposure To Phenolic Compounds, Patricia L. Boyle
Microbial Characteristics Of An Industrial Mixed Liquor After Exposure To Phenolic Compounds, Patricia L. Boyle
Theses
The microbial characteristics of a mixed population from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners (PVSC) Wastewater Treatment Plant in Newark were examined. This plant handles about 250 million gallons per day of mixed sewerage, with a large industrial component. The microbial species were characterized using standard plating techniques, morphology, microscopic observation, and biochemical tests. These characteristics were determined for the fresh liquor, and after successive batch exposure to phenol (100 ppm) and 2-chlorophenol (20 ppm). Predator/prey, gram positive to gram negative bacteria ratios, and the fungi and protozoan populations were also determined. These results were compared with those previously obtained using …

Reformulated 4-Aminopyridine Baits Cost-Effectively Reduce Blackbird Damage To Ripening Cornfields, Jerome F. Besser, John W. Degrazio
Second Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference (1985)
In 1984 4-aminopyridine baits, stabilized with hydrochloric acid, were appraised in ripening cornfields being attacked by blackbirds on the Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge., South Dakota. In 1982, i t had been discovered that 4-aminopyridine, the active agent in commercial Avitrol® baits for crop protection rapidly vaporized at summer storage and field baiting temperatures. In July, baiting lanes were created in 12 cornfields by destroying every 55th row. In August after a 3-day pretreatment period, fields were baited with Avitrol® FC Corn Chops-99 for a 2-week period when corn was most vulnerable to damage. Bait was applied from baiting lanes …
Birds In Hangars - A Messy Problem, Albert E. Bivings Iv
Birds In Hangars - A Messy Problem, Albert E. Bivings Iv
Second Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference (1985)
Pest birds in hangars and similar man-made structures pose specific health hazards as well as nuisance and corrosion problems. While lethal control or a scaring program may be the best technique for some locations, neither address the long-term problem of the basic attractiveness of these structures to birds. The best long-term solution usually is to exclude the birds with permanently installed plastic or nylon netting. Several methods to accomplish this are discussed.
Dispersing Blackbird-Starling Roosts With Helium-Filled Balloons, Donald F. Mott
Dispersing Blackbird-Starling Roosts With Helium-Filled Balloons, Donald F. Mott
Second Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference (1985)
Large (120 cm diameter) helium-filled balloons (2-10 per ha of roost) tethered about 8 m above the vegetation were effective in dispersing blackbirds and starlings from roosting sites. Bird population estimates before, during, and after balloon exposure showed that the balloons frightened the birds and caused most of them to abandon the roost. Roosting bird numbers at each of 5 test roost sites (0.3 to 1.7 ha) were reduced an average of 82% (min-max 47-100%) during 3 to 4 evenings of balloon exposure. Winds >16 km/h during the study made it difficult to keep the balloons aloft and not entangled …
Vole Control In The Eastern United States, Richard M. Poche, Robert Sharp
Vole Control In The Eastern United States, Richard M. Poche, Robert Sharp
Second Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference (1985)
The meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) and pine vole (M. pinetorum) are major pests in fruit orchards in the eastern U.S. These species damage trees by gnawing the bark or root systems during the winter months, thus, reducing the fruit yields or in many cases actually killing the trees. Orchard owners generally use an integrated pest management approach involving a combination of methods: (1) cultural practices such as reducing favorable vole habitat, thereby, limiting the carrying capacity, (2) mechanical control through the use of tree guards or trapping techniques, and (3) the use of rodenticides, both acute …
Animal Damage Control And The Endangered Species Act, Warren T. Parker
Animal Damage Control And The Endangered Species Act, Warren T. Parker
Second Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference (1985)
The premise of the Endangered Species Act is that all wildlife are valuable natural resources and the extinction of species in the name of progress must be halted. To achieve this end, Congress requires all Federal agencies to consult with the Fish and Wildlife Service when any of their programs or projects affect a listed endangered or threatened species. Problems of special interest to this conference are those that project an endangered or threatened species indirect conflict with man. Undoubtedly the most publicized of these conflicts has involved the threatened timber wolf and the livestock producers of northern Minnesota. This …
