A Study Of Methods For Separating The Elements That Interfere In The Electrolytic Deposition Of Lead As Lead Oxide, John Shaw Sabine Jan 1933

A Study Of Methods For Separating The Elements That Interfere In The Electrolytic Deposition Of Lead As Lead Oxide, John Shaw Sabine

Masters Theses

"The electrolytic determination of lead as lead dioxide is a very desirable method, due to its simplicity, accuracy, and the small amount of the analyst's time required. The electrolytic method functions when both large and small amounts of lead are present. The method depends upon the fact that from a nitric acid solution the lead is plated upon the anode as lead dioxide; from the lead dioxide deposit the percentage of lead may be calculated.

An electrolytic method, for determining the lead in samples containing from 5 to 150 mg. of lead, was described in a paper by Schrenk and …

Determination Of The Limits And Accuracy Of Potassium Ferricyanide As An Outside Indicator In The Determination Of Iron And A Comparison Of This Outside Indicator With Diphenylamine As An Inside Indicator, Eugene D. Burr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the volumetric course as offered by the Department of Chemistry of South Dakota State College for the spring term of 1931, we experienced difficulties in the methods which we were using for the determination of iron. The general method used was that of Penny's, using an outside indicator of potassium ferricyanide, and titrating with potassium dichromate.

The Preparation And Specific Gravity Of Pure Formic Acid And Its Aqueous Solutions, Leo Henry Merchie Jan 1933

The Preparation And Specific Gravity Of Pure Formic Acid And Its Aqueous Solutions, Leo Henry Merchie

Masters Theses

"Formic acid, the lowest member of the fatty acid series, was obtained as early as the seventeenth century by distilling ants with water. Other methods were later found after the correct constitution of the acid became known. This acid is not difficult to prepare in a water solution, but it is difficult to obtain in the anhydrous state...The purpose of this work is to study the various methods of preparing anhydrous formic acid, to improve a method for preparing the anhydrous acid, and to correct specific gravity tables for aqueous solutions of formic acid"--Introduction, page 1-2.

Wax Analysis With Special Reference To Montan, Spermaceti, And Chinese Insect Wax, Margaret M. Plonsker, Margaret E. Seippel Jan 1933

Wax Analysis With Special Reference To Montan, Spermaceti, And Chinese Insect Wax, Margaret M. Plonsker, Margaret E. Seippel

Bachelors’ Theses

The presentation of this thesis under joint authorship finds its justification in the fact that much of the experimental work, though performed individually, is of such a nature as to warrant a unified description. In this way the reader is afforded a better representation and clearer conception of the problem, and a substantial guide for further investigation. Though much work has been done in the field of wax analysis, little is known of the higher fatty acids and alcohols of many of the waxes. Their isolation has been infrequent, and few if any of their derivatives have been formed. It …

A Dictionary Of Mathematical Terms For High School Students, Matilda O. Iverson Jan 1933

A Dictionary Of Mathematical Terms For High School Students, Matilda O. Iverson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In compiling and writing this dictionary the needs of the high school student and teacher interested in mathematics have been kept constantly in mind. The mathematics of the high school is perhaps the simplest of its kind and yet very few textbooks carefully define all technical terms as they are introduced. The thoughtful student may turn to an abridged or unabridged dictionary but will find in most cases that the definitions of the terms are vague, often misleading, and in some cases not given.

The words in the vocabulary have been arranged in alphabetical order so that the reference to …

A Study Of The Acoustics Of Some Stockton Auditoriums And Rooms, Glen Halik Jan 1933

A Study Of The Acoustics Of Some Stockton Auditoriums And Rooms, Glen Halik

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Though the original purpose of this thesis was to investigate the cause for criticisms of the acoustical properties of the College Auditorium, it has been enlarged to a study of other Stockton Auditoriums and rooms with the idea of securing a technique of acoustical analysis similar to that of acoustical engineers in the industries. It was planned at first to set up an oscillator and reverberation meter, but it was found that the apparatus expense would be quite prohibitive. This research was therefore confined to noise meter measurements and reverberation calculations, and includes much of architectural and engineering branches. However, …

Tungsten Plating, Allen J. Hipp Aug 1932

Tungsten Plating, Allen J. Hipp

Bachelors’ Theses

During the past twenty years electro-plating has undergone a thorough transformation from an art into a science in which physical chemistry is playing an important role. The factors which govern the plating of copper, nickel and brass are well known. Recently new processes have been found for the plating of cadmium and chromium. Metals which give a bright surface and which will take a polish are in great demand. Nickel and chromium answer these requirements, and are used commercially for a variety of uses. Chromium has been a remarkable success as a plated surface because it is both a beautiful, …

A Study Of The Deposition Of Wax In A Wax Emulsion By Electricity, Howard Mcdonald

Bachelors’ Theses

The basis of this thesis resides in an experiment performed by Dr. J.R. Koch of Marquette University during the summer of 1931. Dr. Koch poured some liquid emulsion into an "H" tube and attached the electrodes to a source of DC current. A few days later he noticed the wax bad separated from the emulsion and had passed to the positive electrode leaving the solution surrounding the negative electrode clear.

Problem-Solving In Arithmetic, Eva M. Acker Jul 1932

Problem-Solving In Arithmetic, Eva M. Acker

Bachelors’ Theses

For a century arithmetic has been a popular subject in the elementary schools, and has consumed more time than any other subject. The war had an effect in reducing this time on arithmetic, largely due to the war-time emphasis on health, food production, back-of-the-line morale, and kindred subjects. More recently, school activities and playground work have come in for a reasonable share of the school time. The Twenty-ninth Yearbook recognizes the child as the center of interest, and the final criterion of all values being the effect any technique of teaching or any content of instruction has on the child. …

The Recovery Of Copper In Sulphide Ores By Roasting, Leaching, And Electrolysis, Jack S. Greenough Jun 1932

The Recovery Of Copper In Sulphide Ores By Roasting, Leaching, And Electrolysis, Jack S. Greenough

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Sulphide ores of copper are insoluble in dilute sulphuric acid leaching solutions, but a very high extraction can be obtained if the copper ore is in the oxidized condition. The problem is to convert the sulphide into the oxide form. This can be done by giving the sulphide ore an oxidizing-sulphatizing roast. Copper sulphate is soluble in water, so acid will be saved in the leaching process if copper sulphate is present. The iron in the copper sulphide ores is present as pyrite, or in combinations as bornite, or chalcopyrite.

Some Notes On The Composition Of "Copper Pitch", Richard R. Matthew Jun 1932

Some Notes On The Composition Of "Copper Pitch", Richard R. Matthew

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

A supply of so-called "copper pitch" ore was received by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in response to a request by them from a resident of Kalispell, who had previously sent a specimen to the Bureau for a mineralogical analysis.

Since this material was little known and had apparently received but little study under a reflecting microscope, it was thought that such a study might throw some light on the mineralogical and chemical composition of the material.

A Bentonite Deposit Near Warm Springs, Montana, R. H. Larson Jun 1932

A Bentonite Deposit Near Warm Springs, Montana, R. H. Larson

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This report deals with a bentonite deposit recently developed, approximately seven miles northeast of Warm Springs, Montana. A group of claims have been staked on the deposit and are owned by the Lincoln Mining Company of Anaconda, Montana. The company also has several claims prospected for silver one mile from its present site of operations, but the silver prospects have failed to produce. The bentonite deposit was discovered incidentally during the course of other development work, and at present two adits have been driven into the side of a mountain, each crosscutting a vein-like mass of bentonite varying from two …

Arithmetical Progressions, Frances Agnes Scherkenbach Jun 1932

Arithmetical Progressions, Frances Agnes Scherkenbach

Bachelors’ Theses

Of the origin and the methods of treatment very little is known. The arithmetic and geometric progression first attracted attention after the Greeks had brought into prominence the harmonic series. The term ’series’ is derived from the Greek, while the term’ progression’ is derived from the Latin. The latter term was used most prominently until the seventeenth century, during which period the writers seemed to prefer the term "series" which is now mosy [sic] generally used.

The Quantitative Estimation Of Solvents And Non-Solvents As Found In Lacquer Preparations, Harry Katzowsky Jun 1932

The Quantitative Estimation Of Solvents And Non-Solvents As Found In Lacquer Preparations, Harry Katzowsky

Bachelors’ Theses

The study of solvents and non-solvents in lacquers entails a great deal of work which is unable to be covered in so small a space of time, and although this thesis attempts to understand the use of these solvents and non-solvents, it is just a mere uncovering of much more interesting work able to be done with further analysis in this field.

The Rate Of Precipitation Of Copper Aluminide In The Silver Rich Silver-Copper-Aluminum Alloys, Thomas Finley Mcbride May 1932

The Effect Of Hydrogen Overvoltage On The Electrolytic Deposition Of Zinc, John M. Munzenrider, Kenneth O. Sweeney May 1932

The Effect Of Hydrogen Overvoltage On The Electrolytic Deposition Of Zinc, John M. Munzenrider, Kenneth O. Sweeney

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

In the deposition of metallic zinc by electrolysis from neutral or acid solution, little difficulty is experienced provided certain impurities are absent from the electrolyte. The use of the process has long been considered as a potential source, patents on the process having been issued as early as 1880. However, the early experimenters failed to realize the importance of impurities in the electrolyte, and for this reason, the process suffered several severe setbacks when commercial plants were built.

The Electrolytic Deposition Of Chromium Upon Aluminum, E. Fults, L. D. Voerge May 1932

The Electrolytic Deposition Of Chromium Upon Aluminum, E. Fults, L. D. Voerge

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The purpose or this investigation is primarily to determine the best conditions for plating chromium on aluminum. The work was carried out with the hope of obtaining coherent deposits, and of determining the conditions under which such deposits may be duplicated.

This subject as taken bee use it offered a special appeal to be able to investigate something that was new and practical.

The Problem Of The Trisection Of The Angle, Ruth O'Brien May 1932

The Problem Of The Trisection Of The Angle, Ruth O'Brien

Bachelors’ Theses

The great problem of the trisection of the angle dates back to the rise of the Sophist School about 480 B.C. The Sophist School was one of six Greek mathematical schools which included the Iconic, Pythagorean, Platonic, First Alexandrian and Second Alexandrian Schools. The periods of their existence overlapped considerably. thus, for example, Pythagorean activity continued during the time of the Sophists until the opening of the Platonic School. The rise of the Sophists to prominence came as a result of certain social and political conditions of the time.

The History Of The Parallel Postulate And Non-Euclidean Geometry, Clare Switalski May 1932

The History Of The Parallel Postulate And Non-Euclidean Geometry, Clare Switalski

Bachelors’ Theses

After approximately two thousand years mathematicians have ventured to dispute the geometry of Euclid. Euclid's axioms were regarded as indisputable laws of space, the sole source from which his theorems were deduced. One needs only to survey the history of the controversies concerning his parallel postulate to be convinced that his assumptions are only metaphysical, since these assumptions can be changed when a space different from Euclid's is considered.

The Decomposition Of Mixed Ethers And A Quantitative Scheme For The Determination Of A Quaternary Mixture Of Alcohols And Iodides, Ellsworth H. Stock May 1932

The Decomposition Of Mixed Ethers And A Quantitative Scheme For The Determination Of A Quaternary Mixture Of Alcohols And Iodides, Ellsworth H. Stock

Bachelors’ Theses

To introduce some recent advances covering the decomposition of mixed ethers and the quantitative scheme for quaternary mixtures of alcohols and iodides is the privilege and responsibility of this paper. The first part of the paper deals with the oxidation, and quantitative determination of binary mixtures of alcohols. The last half covers the separation of the alcohols from the iodides, the decomposition of the mixed ethers, and the complete outline for determining the amount of alcohols resulting from the decomposition. Tables, graphs, and drawings have been included in the text, because the complete understanding of the method depends to some …
