A Method Of Determining The Relative Thermal Conductivities Of Liquids, Lohr Arthur Burkardt May 1934

A Method Of Determining The Relative Thermal Conductivities Of Liquids, Lohr Arthur Burkardt

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis concerns the development of apparatus suitable for the practical determination of the thermal conductivity of liquids. The data presented in the literature refers to the determination of absolute conductivity values and-is very unsatisfactory from a practical point of view. The aim here has not been to furnish absolute data, but to provide a simple means of determining the relative conductivity of any series of liquids. Knowing such a set of relative conductivities, absolute values can readily be calculated therefrom.

The aim has been to develop an apparatus that is simple enough to be constructed in the ordinary laboratory, …

A Contribution To The Preparation Of Synthetic Rubber From Butadiene. Ii., Joseph Patrick Iding May 1934

A Contribution To The Preparation Of Synthetic Rubber From Butadiene. Ii., Joseph Patrick Iding

Bachelors’ Theses

Since the World War, the production of synthetic rubber has become the problem not only of the laboratory, but of commerce as well. Several factors demanded this research.

In the first place, the World War made the dependence of countries on each other strikingly evident in several ways, one of which was the need for rubber by great nations whose situations prohibited the planting of the rubber tree and consequently put them under obligation to other countries for their supply.

And now in the last few years this demand for rubber has been increased enormously, through the increased production of …

The Equilibrium Relations Of Nickel Sulfide With Copper And Sodium Sulfides, Walter A. Hamilton

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The equilibrium relations of many of the metallic sulfides have long been a source of scientific and commercial interest, of particular interest, are the sulfides of nickel and copper, since the economic recovery of both of these useful metals, from their ores, involves the formation of a sulfide at some stage of the operations.

Effect Of Manganese And Arsenic Upon Current Efficiency In The Deposition Of Zinc From Zinc Sulphate Solution, Justin Kelly Jan 1934

Effect Of Manganese And Arsenic Upon Current Efficiency In The Deposition Of Zinc From Zinc Sulphate Solution, Justin Kelly

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Throughout the entire experiment the electrolysis were conducted in an eight-hundred cubic centimeter beaker. An excellent circulation of the solution was assured by means of an electric stirrer, vigorous gas evolution from the anodes, and by means of a regulated feed-discharge system. By means of this balance, solution of the same impurity concentration as that of the electrolyte was fed in the cell just as fast as the discharge was syphoned out.

The Production Of Oxalic, Citric, And Gluconic Acids From Plantation Molasses, John A. Ruth

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This research was undertaken for the purpose of developing a process for producing citric and gluconic acids from plantation molasses.

There is an evident need for such a process. At the present time, these acids are being produced by processes in which refined sugar is the principal raw material. If molasses could be used in place of refined sugar, the cost of raw materials would be reduced by approximately ninety percent. In addition, a waste product would be utilized.

The scope of this problem is very broad. Its solution will involve the solving of many problems of widely varying natures. …

A Generalized Kronecker Symbol And Cubic Determinants, Lota Lucile Campbell Aug 1933

A Generalized Kronecker Symbol And Cubic Determinants, Lota Lucile Campbell

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The object of this thesis is to present a further generealization of Kronecker's symbol and apply it to cubic determinants.

Part I contains preliminary work on the Kronecker smbol as generliazed by Murnaghan, and applied to the plane determianntns. It includes only material that is necessary in the explanation of part II.

In part II we make a further generalization by defining a symbol composed of three rows of indices. The elementary properties of this symbol are given, the cubic determinant is define by means of the generalized symbol, and certain theorems on cubic determinants are demonstrated.

These theorems were …

The Action Of Tertiary Butyl Hypochlorite On Certain Nitrogen Compounds, Myrl Lichtenwalter Aug 1933

The Action Of Tertiary Butyl Hypochlorite On Certain Nitrogen Compounds, Myrl Lichtenwalter

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

In an earlier unpublished study, made in this laboratory, of the preparation and properties of positive halogen compounds, it was found that the replacement of hydrogen on an imide nitrogen in certain compounds sensitive to hydrolytic agents could be accomplished in tertiary butyl alcohol solution. It seemed likely that this reaction took place through the intermediate formation of tertiary butyl hypochlorite. Such mechanism has been proposed by Sandmeyer to account for the formation of chlorylimino ethyl carbonate by the action of chlorine on an alcoholic solution of potassium cyanide. The isolation of tertiary butyl hypochlorite by Chattaway and Brackenburg makes …

Mathematical Short Cuts And Checks, Leon Schram Jun 1933

Mathematical Short Cuts And Checks, Leon Schram

Bachelors’ Theses

A computer naturally should be the master of short cuts and methods for checking his work. The latter is perhaps of more importance than the former because one must be able to show his employer that he knows that his work is correct.

A Brief Study Of The Cherokee Formation Outcrop In Kansas, Roland G. Holmes Jun 1933

A Brief Study Of The Cherokee Formation Outcrop In Kansas, Roland G. Holmes

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The Cherokee formation is one of the important rock formations of Kansas. There has been much work done upon the coal beds of this formation but so far as is shown by a search of the available literature, there has been no work carried on making a study of the rock beds of the formation by means of chemical analysis.

This paper is an endeavour to do three things: (1) to make a brief study of the rocks of the Cherokee formation at various horizons, (2) to attempt to show by chemical analysis the position of the land mass from …

Leaching Copper Minerals In The Butte District, Kenneth C. Bellows May 1933

Leaching Copper Minerals In The Butte District, Kenneth C. Bellows

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The history of mining in Butte is woven about three of our principal metals. The gold placers first attracted the attention of miners in 1863, and reached their peak production in 1867. Silver was the second metal mined, and this operation required the erection of large mills with a consequent increase in mining activity that made the district a prominent producer. Although the presence of copper in the silver ore had been known, the credit for the first development of the copper veins is due Senator W. A. Clark. The original Colusa, Mining Chief, and Gambetta claims were developed to …

The Calcite Veins Of The Livingston Formation, John Moore Conrow May 1933

The Calcite Veins Of The Livingston Formation, John Moore Conrow

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

An interesting group of calcite veins occur near Livingston Montana in a zone about eight miles wide and forty miles long in the edge of the Plains region of Montana in front of the Main ranges. The zone extends from the Boulder River south of Big Timber, through Springdale and Hunters Hot Springs, to Potter's Basin just north of Wilsall in Park County. The group of veins is particularly interesting because they cut relatively flat lying strata, suggest a structural relationship to one another, and they are nearly pure calcite.

The present investigation was to determine the position of the …

A Microscopic Study Of Some Volcanic Rocks In The Vicinity Of Butte, Evan Gustafson May 1933

A Microscopic Study Of Some Volcanic Rocks In The Vicinity Of Butte, Evan Gustafson

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The rhyolite rocks in the vicinity of Big Butte present a very interesting, though complicated study. It seems that no extensive or conclusive work has ever been done upon these extrusives.

I have found that the rhyolites present a very interesting problem, especially microscopically, and that no doubt an intensive study along these lines will solve the problems concerning age relations of different flows and origin of the magma that produced the material for emanations.

A Study Of Montana Bentonite, William P. Ryan May 1933

A Study Of Montana Bentonite, William P. Ryan

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Research has been undertaken both under Government and private auspices in an endeavor to develop uses for bentonite. Perhaps, the work done to date has had only in consideration the possible industrial importance of bentonite. No simple, quick methods for the determination of the properties or qualities of any particular bentonite have been developed.

In an attempt to establish whether or not there is a means of making rapid simple determinations of the quality of Montana bentonitic clays, and in particular, with regard to the uses to which the clays may be suited. The problem also involves a study of …

Methods Of Obtaining Asymptotes, Paul Sweetland May 1933

Methods Of Obtaining Asymptotes, Paul Sweetland

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The purpose of this thesis is to present in logical order the more important methods of obtaining asymptotes. In several cases where two or more different methods for obtaining the same type of asymptotes were found the simpler method is given first and then the more difficult method. Most of the simpler methods are based on Analytic Geometry, while the more difficult are based on the Calculus.

Effect Of Impurities Upon Current Efficiency In The Electrolysis Of Zinc Sulphate Solution, Robert Jess Smith May 1933

Effect Of Impurities Upon Current Efficiency In The Electrolysis Of Zinc Sulphate Solution, Robert Jess Smith

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

There are many elements which are detrimental to the current efficiency in the electrolysis of zinc sulphate solution. Fortunately the majority of these elements are easily removed in the purification process and cause no further trouble. The elements that are likely to cause trouble in ordinary plant operations are antimony, arsenic, cobalt, nickel, manganese and germanium. The following tests were made to determine the mutual effect on the current efficiency when several of the impurities were present in the electrolyte.

A Study Of The Composition Of Zinc Complex Cyanide Solutions By The Conductometric Method, Robert James Woody May 1933

A Study Of The Composition Of Zinc Complex Cyanide Solutions By The Conductometric Method, Robert James Woody

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

As the method or analysis used up to the present time has failed to give quantitative results in determining the composition of zinc cyanide baths, conductometric methods were adopted in this study. Supplementary tests were also carried out in this investigation.
